Above Ground, level one, Projection Control Room.
The jailer on duty had just dozed off when a burst of piercing static suddenly came from the projection channel.
Still groggy a moment before, he instantly became much more alert.
"Huh? What's going on? The signal from level one, Crimson Hell, has been cut off. Did something happen?"
Unease welled up inside him, and he hurriedly pulled up the recording.
First came a rumble in the footage, then the cell bars suddenly broke. A foot even appeared...
Immediately afterward, the image dissolved completely into static.
Someone had forcibly cut off the signal.
"Deputy Chief, this is bad! Something terrible has happened! Someone's trying to escape!"
He was utterly panicked.
If he had seen correctly, someone had walked out of a cell.
The Deputy Chief on duty with him groggily opened his eyes. Not even bothering to look at the projection, he rolled over and muttered impatiently:
"What's all the fuss about? I only just woke up. It's just a Den Den Mushi losing its signal. Isn't that perfectly normal?"
"Yeah, the Deputy Chief's right. You're just too cautious. Maybe your eyes were playing tricks on you.
Apart from that incident back then, no one could possibly escape our Impel Down. It's just a lost signal. Send someone down to take a look, and that's that."
The Deputy Chief and the other man casually notified the jailers still on level one, Crimson Hell, through a Den Den Mushi, then went back to snoring away.
The jailer on duty could only smile bitterly.
"Sigh... At least take a look."
Still, he could just about understand.
Life in Impel Down was simply too boring.
Every day, there was nothing but prisoners. The only ways to pass the time were torturing prisoners and sleeping.
As for someone escaping...
Heh, how could that happen?
Yet he could not put his mind at ease. He kept feeling that things were not that simple.
He switched through several more views in succession but found nothing wrong, so he could only force down his worries.
"Sigh, the Deputy Chief has a point. I suppose I'm probably overthinking it. How could anyone escape an underwater prison like Impel Down?"
After all, Impel Down was known as the most secure prison in the world and held several legendary pirates.
Apart from that one time with Golden Lion, there could never be another escape.
Yet, for some reason, that trace of unease refused to go away.
In Crimson Hell, Roy stepped out of his cell.
"Just what I'd expect of Impel Down. Cells and iron gates as far as the eye can see."
Only then did the prisoners in the other cells finally react.
"Hey, hey, how is this possible... Is this guy an ability user? But if he is, how could he still use his powers inside a cell?"
Although the cells on Impel Down's first level were the most basic accommodations beneath the sea, they were still made of Seastone.
Its primary function was to suppress ability users.
No matter how powerful an ability user was, they would be completely suppressed inside a cell.
They could not use any abilities.
Yet now, Roy had not only killed Pirate Sangbiao inside his cell, but had also sliced through the Seastone cell along the way.
It was simply unbelievable.
By the time they recovered their senses, they could no longer spare a thought for Roy's vicious, brutal killing just now.
As though each had glimpsed hope of regaining freedom, they hurriedly began shouting.
"Hey, kid, let us out too!"
"Yeah, we've had enough of this prison! As long as you let me out, I'll do anything you ask!"
"They're right. You may be strong, but Impel Down isn't somewhere one person can break out of alone. Let us out, and we'll charge out together!"
To these criminals, Impel Down was a suffocating cage.
They would desperately seize even the slightest opportunity.
Now that they had seen this glimmer of hope, they naturally refused to let it slip away.
Bzz! Bzz!
As Roy listened to the clamor around him, his gaze darkened, and a terrifying pressure suddenly burst forth.
"A bunch of fools. Whoever says another word dies."
The prisoners immediately clamped their mouths shut.
Only then did they abruptly remember that the man before them was a chillingly brutal presence.
However, the pirates in two other cells not only refused to fall silent, but kept threatening him.
"Kid, you're certainly strong. But I've sailed the New World! If you get us out, I'll show you what the New World has to offer!"
"Heh, brat, you might be able to threaten other people, but do you think you can threaten pirates like us who've braved the New World?
Impel Down is an underwater prison. Without us, you'll never get out. If you know what's good for you, let us out too!"
Hearing this, Roy finally turned his gaze toward the two cells in the deepest part of the prison.
Through the gaps in the cell doors, he saw two exceptionally muscular prisoners whose bearing was clearly out of the ordinary.
Their gazes were colder. Although they were also deeply wary of his pressure, they could still barely maintain a basic measure of calm.
"Heh, just what I'd expect from pirates who've braved the New World. Even your words are full of arrogance."
Roy smiled, raised his fingers, and aimed them at the two pirates.
"But haven't you gotten something wrong?"
The moment he spoke, even with the cells separating them, the atmosphere throughout the space abruptly dropped to freezing.
Many prisoners felt as though their blood were about to freeze. Even breathing became extraordinarily difficult, as if death itself would descend in the next instant.
The two New World pirates felt something was wrong all the more keenly and cried out in terror.
"Kid, what are you trying to do?! Didn't you hear us? If you kill us, you won't be able to leave Impel Down either!"
"Don't be stupid! You have no idea how formidable Impel Down is! In a few minutes at most, every jailer in Impel Down will know. How will you get out if you kill us? It's impossible..."
Boom!
Before they could finish, two slashing attacks burst forth without the slightest hesitation.
The once incredibly solid Seastone cells were sliced apart as easily as fragile sheets of paper.
Even more horrifyingly, the two pirates who had been so arrogant moments before were cut in half at the waist on the spot.
Crimson blood splashed across the two cells.
At that moment, the entire place fell silent.
Every pirate present felt fortunate that they had not spoken up just now.
Otherwise, they too would now have had their heads severed from their bodies, just like those two New World pirates.
Bzz! Bzz!
"This is bad... Someone really is breaking out! Notify Chief Warden Magellan, now!"
Amid the commotion, the jailers sent to investigate finally arrived and witnessed Roy's escape firsthand.
Four pairs of eyes met.
The three jailers stared, dumbfounded. Clearly, they had never expected a prisoner to actually dare attempt an escape.
Roy merely gave them an indifferent glance and paid them no further attention.
With another casual wave, he unleashed ten slashing attacks, cutting through the iron bars of more cells on Impel Down's first level.
"Heh, I'm already in Impel Down. Wouldn't it be a wasted trip if I didn't break out?"
"It'd be so dull with just me. Let this Impel Down descend into utter chaos."
