Power Progression

Stage / Realm / Level Chapter Notes
Ordinary prisoner → 50% template synchronization 2 Randomly receives Ryomen Sukuna’s Fushiguro template. Reverse Cursed Technique restores his dying body, and he gains slashing techniques and the Ten Shadows Technique. His strength is initially described as Admiral-level.
Intermediate Armament and Observation Haki 11 Analyzes Shiryu during combat, learns Armament Haki strongly enough to snap Raiu, and develops Observation Haki sufficient to evade attacks with his eyes closed.
Admiral — 84% 17 First numerical system assessment; synchronization remains at 50%. Begins attempting to apply Armament Haki to his shikigami, though this fusion is not yet successful.
Admiral — 95%; 60% synchronization 25 Consumes two Sukuna’s Fingers after six days of training. Unlocks Black Flash, advances Armament Haki to Ryuo, and masters Soru and Finger Pistol.
Conqueror’s Haki awakened 27 Awakens while confronting Bullet’s Conqueror’s Haki in Level 6. Immediately contests Bullet’s pressure, although his newly awakened Haki remains weaker.
Haki-infused slashes 32 Successfully combines Haki and cursed energy into Haki Slash: Dismantle, using it against Magellan.
Haki-coated shikigami 33 Fully coats Divine Dogs: Totality and Piercing Ox in Armament Haki, completing the fusion attempted during his first battle with Kuzan.
Conqueror’s Coating demonstrated 36 Uses ordinary Conqueror’s Coating while fighting Garp and drives him backward in a direct exchange.
King Level — 9% 79 80 Fuses the Shadow-Shadow Fruit with the Ten Shadows Technique to create the Myriad Shadow Technique. Unseals his shikigami, gains new summons and ability feedback, and brings Conqueror’s Haki to the advanced level. Synchronization remains at 60%.
King Level — 33%; 80% synchronization 108 109 Consumes another batch of Sukuna’s Fingers after recovering at Sabaody. Merged Beast: Agito and Kamutoke become available; the panel also records Door-Door spatial abilities, Clock-Clock rewind, and an expanded shikigami legion.

Appearance

  • Hair and eyes: Black hair swept upward and back, with scarlet eyes following his template awakening 2.
  • Markings: Mysterious black markings spread across his cheeks; further tattoos are visible beneath his clothing 2 25.
  • Build: Initially has skinny arms, but his body develops pronounced muscular contours when the template activates 1 2.
  • Clothing: Wears a custom kimono made by Ivankov, whose cuff and hem patterns complement his tattoos. Ivankov later gives him a white kimono 25 56.
  • Bearing: Frequently resembles an aloof noble prince, an impression sharply at odds with his murderous presence and reputation 25 30 59.

Personality

Roy begins as a frightened but resourceful prisoner who resists being robbed even when badly outmatched. Torture, near death, and the Sukuna template alter him profoundly: the narration explicitly attributes part of his subsequent arrogance and cruelty to Sukuna’s influence 1 2.

He openly rejects the role of a righteous hero. He can acknowledge an opponent’s courage without granting mercy, as shown when he praises Hannyabal’s determination before attacking the jailers. His statement that good and evil make no difference to whom he kills is borne out by his massacres of both armed enemies and the shadowless people who pressure him at Thriller Bark 12 13 75.

His brutality is paired with caution and calculation. He steals Level 6’s keys during his battle with Shiryu, uses knowledge of Dragon’s family as leverage, and exploits Marine hostages to escape Sengoku’s blockade. When allies appear unreliable, he concludes that an absolutely obedient shikigami army would be safer than depending on other criminals 22 41 44.

Roy is deeply suspicious of followers and initially refuses Yake’s requests to serve him. Nevertheless, persistent loyalty eventually wins some followers a place beside him. He heals Yake’s severed hand and later speaks of repaying those who trusted him and died at Sabaody 52 56 116 133.

He particularly despises what he considers hypocrisy: Marines invoking justice while abusing authority, or pirates claiming to preserve peace while targeting him. His response is not to deny his own crimes, but to insist that his enemies have no exclusive right to judge or attack others 30 36 82 119.

Abilities & Skills

Cursed Energy and Template Synchronization

Roy’s system supplies Sukuna’s abilities in a world without naturally occurring cursed energy. Negative-emotion collection orbs convert emotions such as greed and resentment into usable power 2.

  • Sustained cursed-energy accumulation condenses Sukuna’s Fingers, which increase template synchronization when consumed 2 25.
  • Impel Down’s accumulated negativity produces two fingers; after its historical reserves are exhausted, it can sustain cursed-energy circulation but cannot immediately produce more 22.
  • Sabaody’s violence and human trafficking provide another major reservoir of negative emotions 93 108.
  • Reserves are not unlimited: consecutive battles against Impel Down’s defenders leave him depleted and vulnerable against Kuzan 16 19 20.

Slashing Techniques

Roy can unleash lethal slashes without a weapon. Their power depends on his control and expenditure of cursed energy 2.

  • Ordinary Slash: Dismantle: His basic adjustable slash, used to dismember opponents and cut through prison cells 2 3.
  • Enhanced Slash: Hachi: A strengthened attack used against Kuzan 16.
  • Cross Slash: Leaves an approximately thousand-meter scar that Garp compares with a top Great Swordsman’s attack 21.
  • Haki Slash: Dismantle: Combines Haki with cursed energy, overcoming a major weakness of his original slashes 32.
  • Conqueror’s Haki combination: Later slashes kill thousands and sever the connection between Sabaody’s Areas 43 and 42 116.
  • Early limitation: Slashes lacking Haki cannot reliably damage Kuzan through Logia elementalization 17.
  • Locked techniques: Open: Furnace and World-Cutting Slash remain locked in the chapter 109 panel 109.

Reverse Cursed Technique

Roy converts negative cursed energy into positive energy to regenerate damaged tissue 2.

  • Restores his broken arm, shattered breastbone, and other fatal injuries when his template activates 2.
  • Repairs the severe damage caused by Magellan’s venom, effectively countering his poison-based attacks 13 14.
  • Can heal others, including regenerating Yake’s severed hand 56.
  • Regrows Roy’s missing right arm after his battle with Shanks and Beckman 105 108.
  • Does not immediately remove every supernatural effect: Imu’s demonic energy continues affecting Roy after the Sabaody battle 133.

Ten Shadows and Myriad Shadow Technique

Roy initially commands the Ten Shadows Technique through Sukuna’s Fushiguro template. Fusion with the Shadow-Shadow Fruit transforms it into the Myriad Shadow Technique, listed as demigod-level but unawakened 2 80.

  • Original summons: Rabbit Escape, Divine Dogs: Totality, Piercing Ox, and Max Elephant 17.
  • Reconnaissance: Shares vision with Rabbit Escape and uses the rabbits to monitor Marine movements and deliver messages 21.
  • Shikigami creation: Combines bodies, shadows, and cursed energy to create new summons retaining corresponding abilities; Lucci and other captured agents become examples 57 80.
  • Independent development: The fused technique’s shikigami possess consciousness, can train independently, and do not require subjugation 80.
  • Ability feedback: The fusion feeds shikigami abilities back into Roy and releases summons previously sealed during his battle with Garp 57 79.
  • Shadow General Tianba: An especially powerful summon whose initial strength approaches Admiral-level; it helps overwhelm Kuma 80 81.
  • Merged Beast: Agito: Once unsealed, has Admiral-level strength alongside healing, binding, lightning, and flight capabilities 109.
  • Large-scale production: Converts more than two thousand battlefield corpses into new shikigami while preparing for the decisive Sabaody battle 106.

His chapter 109 panel records the following legion 109:

Combat strength Number
Admiral Candidate 3
Elite Vice Admiral 5
Headquarters Vice Admiral 6
Elite Rear Admiral 200

Haki

Roy learns through observation and analysis rather than relying solely on conventional instruction 8 11.

  • Armament Haki: Advances from intermediate to advanced Ryuo, allowing internal and external attacks; can reinforce his body, slashes, and shikigami 11 25 32 33.
  • Observation Haki: Predicts attacks by sensing breathing, sounds, and rhythm. It remains intermediate in his chapter 109 panel 11 109.
  • Conqueror’s Haki: Awakens against Bullet and later reaches advanced Conqueror’s Coating 27 79 80.
  • Limitation: Shanks and Beckman’s Future Sight complicates his attacks and contributes to the interruption of his domain 103.

Black Flash

Black Flash augments Roy’s close-range combat with a spatially distorting strike and unusual effects on energy 37.

  • Replenishes his energy while disrupting an opponent’s replenishment 37.
  • Weakens Garp’s stamina and Haki during their clash 37.
  • Also reduces Shanks’s Haki after a successful hit 104.

Spatial and Temporal Abilities

By chapter 109, Roy’s panel lists powers associated with the Door-Door and Clock-Clock Fruits 109.

  • Door-Door abilities: Spatial movement and spatial doors 109.
  • Clock-Clock ability: Rewind; its activation manifests a large clock above him during the decisive battle 109 120.
  • Battlefield deployment: Roy’s forces emerge through dark spaces behind enemy positions at Sabaody 116.

Swordsmanship, Martial Arts, and Domains

Roy combines his template’s analytical talent with the physical combat systems of his new world 25 71.

  • Great Swordsman-level swordsmanship: Produces flying slashes with Shusui despite lacking deliberate prior sword training 71.
  • Getsuga Tensho: A named sword technique that he later combines with Conqueror’s Coating against Shanks, Sengoku, and Shamrock 80 127.
  • Six Powers: Learns Soru and Finger Pistol from Ivankov, fully masters both, and modifies Finger Pistol’s form 25.
  • Malevolent Shrine: Listed among his available domains; a domain deployment is interrupted during the Shanks–Beckman battle 17 103.
  • Shadow Clone: Listed as a special domain, while Shadow Garden remains locked in the chapter 109 panel 109.
  • Piercing Blood: Listed among his available special abilities 17 109.

Equipment / Weapons / Items

  • Negative Cursed Energy Collection Ball / collection orbs: System-issued devices that turn negative emotions into cursed energy 2 4.
  • Sukuna’s Fingers: Condensed cursed-energy items consumed to raise synchronization and strength 25 108.
  • Black Blade Shusui: Taken after defeating zombie Ryuma; later used for Conqueror’s Coating: Getsuga Tensho 71 127.
  • Elephant Sword: A sword possessing the Elephant-Elephant Fruit, looted from Spandam’s collection and subsequently listed as a cursed instrument 71 80.
  • Kamutoke: Initially locked; later available with lightning properties 17 109.
  • Hiten: Remains locked in the chapter 109 panel 109.
  • Level 6 keys: Stolen from Shiryu and entrusted to Ivankov to prepare the second breakout 22.
  • Custom kimono: Made by Ivankov for his escape; followed by a white kimono given before their later departure 25 56.

Background / History

Imprisonment and System Awakening

Roy transmigrates into the One Piece world and finds himself imprisoned in Impel Down’s Crimson Hell. He later explains that Marines arrested him after he spoke against an injustice; their own investigation establishes that he had appeared ordinary when taken into custody 1 14 21.

When Brother Sangbiao tries to steal his food and kill him, Roy slips out of his handcuffs and stabs him in the eye with a sharp stone. Sangbiao retaliates by breaking his arm and crushing his chest. Roy’s refusal to accept death triggers the system, which preserves his final breath 1.

Unable to speak during the selection process, Roy receives both the Jujutsu Kaisen system and Sukuna’s Fushiguro template through random draws. He heals, kills Sangbiao, cuts open his cell, and announces himself as “Ryomen Roy” 2.

The Impel Down Breakouts

Roy releases prisoners to create chaos and deploys his collection device to harvest the prison’s negative emotions. He defeats Shiryu after using him to learn Haki, then kills Sadi and many other jailers and beasts. His first confrontation with Kuzan exposes weaknesses in his Haki, stamina, and ability to damage Logias, forcing him to retreat through the Ten Shadows Technique 3 4 11 12 13 17 19.

Sheltered in Level 5.5, he coerces Dragon into arranging a Revolutionary Army distraction. He gives Ivankov the stolen Level 6 keys, trains for six days, and consumes two Sukuna’s Fingers. He then launches the second escape early to prevent the search parties from discovering their refuge 20 22 25.

Roy frees Level 6’s prisoners, awakens Conqueror’s Haki against Bullet, kills Magellan, and defeats Garp. During the subsequent sea escape, he uses Marine hostages to force Sengoku’s fleet aside, defeats Zephyr, and kills two Giant Vice Admirals. Sengoku’s long-range ambush injures his hand, but Roy continues escaping rather than returning to fight 27 32 41 42 44 47.

Water 7 and Thriller Bark

After the escape, Roy initially refuses permanent followers and separates from Ivankov. His 3.3-billion bounty precedes him to Water 7, where he captures CP agents. Marines wrongly identify him as the killer of local shipwrights; he kills T-Bone and the force sent against him 52 59 61 63.

Seeking to repair his sealed shikigami and build an obedient army, Roy targets Moria’s Shadow-Shadow Fruit. At Thriller Bark, he defeats zombie Ryuma, obtains Shusui, and helps Brook recover his shadow. Following Moria’s death, Roy refuses to return the other stolen shadows and kills Lola and nearly a thousand people who pressure him 57 69 70 71 75 82.

The resulting fusion creates the Myriad Shadow Technique and raises him to King Level. After defeating Kuma’s ambush, he learns from Dragon that Shanks is seeking World Government assistance to kill him and departs for Sabaody with Brook 79 80 81 82.

The Sabaody Archipelago War

Before the main battle, Roy publicly explains his combat-tier system to Morgans, distinguishing Emperor Level from the higher King Level. He reunites with Bullet, combines their forces with Yake’s group, and orders an investigation that exposes numerous spies 90 94.

Roy kills Squard and Rakuyo but deliberately leaves Ace alive, revealing enough of Ace’s parentage to draw Rayleigh’s protection. While Roy confronts Shanks and Beckman, his shikigami attack the Red Hair Pirates elsewhere. The ensuing battle leaves Roy severely wounded and missing an arm, but fails to defeat him 100 103 105 107.

After regenerating and increasing his synchronization to 80%, Roy launches his counterattack. He devastates the enemy forces in Area 43, then confronts Shanks and the Government’s assembled fighters. Red arrives to support him, and the fighting destroys large portions of the archipelago 108 109 116 119 127.

Imu subsequently descends through Gunko’s body. Roy, Red, and Mihawk fight the avatar, and Roy breaks free from Black Turn Domination through his willpower and the system’s presence. He ultimately carries his exhausted allies up the Red Line into the New World. Although the battle’s details remain hidden from the public, Roy emerges as one of the Five Emperors 130 131 133.

Greenland Island and the Shikigami Kingdom

When Whitebeard’s alliance gathers on Greenland Island, Roy offers safety to crews that withdraw, causing numerous pirates to abandon the coalition. After crushing the remaining opposition, he forces the surviving commanders to exchange three lives for three departures 137 142.

Thatch, Jozu, and Vista volunteer to die so Rayleigh, Ace, and Marco can leave. Roy honors the exchange, kills the three volunteers in combat, and declares the Whitebeard Pirates finished. He establishes the Shikigami Kingdom’s headquarters on Greenland Island and orders his army to build a palace 142 143.

During his subsequent seclusion, Roy studies his army and considers converting the powerful bodies he has preserved. He rejects an immediate expedition to Mary Geoise, acknowledging that Imu’s true body and arsenal still make the Holy Land too dangerous 143.

Relationships

  • Ryomen Sukuna — Source of Roy’s principal template, analytical talent, cursed techniques, and part of his altered temperament. Roy distinguishes himself from Sukuna despite embracing the template’s ruthlessness 2 5 11.
  • Emporio Ivankov — Escape partner, instructor in Soru and Finger Pistol, and maker of Roy’s kimono. Continues mediating between him and the Revolutionary Army despite their conflicting allegiances 22 25 52 82.
  • Monkey D. Dragon — Coerced collaborator turned pragmatic intelligence partner. Roy’s threats against his family and near killing of Garp strain their cooperation 22 52 82.
  • Douglas Bullet — Fellow escapee and military ally. Roy acknowledges his strength but challenges his decisions and willingness to commit to the Sabaody war 27 94 105 106.
  • Red the Aloof — Fellow escapee who owes Roy favors for freeing him and guiding him toward the Vampire Fruit. Later intervenes at Sabaody and fights beside him against Imu 69 119 130.
  • Brook — Companion whose shadow is recovered after Roy defeats zombie Ryuma. Later swears loyalty and serves within the Roy Guild 71 82 106 137.
  • Yake — Devoted former prisoner who repeatedly asks to follow Roy. Roy eventually accepts his persistence, heals his severed hand, and entrusts him with orders 52 56 94 116.
  • Sanjuan Wolf — Escapee and later subordinate, initially obedient largely because he fears Roy 36 137.
  • Dracule Mihawk — Swordsmanship rival and battlefield ally. Roy accepts his proposed duel without hostility, and they later fight Imu together 104 130.
  • Shanks — Principal enemy of the Sabaody conflict. Roy resents his attempts to block their rise and his cooperation with the World Government; Roy later identifies Shanks among the enemies his forces killed 82 119 137.
  • Garp and Kuzan — Major Marine opponents during the breakout. Kuzan first exposes Roy’s weaknesses, while Garp condemns him as a calamity before suffering defeat 17 30 37 42.
  • Imu — Overwhelming adversary whose avatar Roy fights alongside Red and Mihawk. Even afterward, Roy considers himself far behind Imu’s true strength 130 143.
