Background

Sukuna stood at the pinnacle of jujutsu a thousand years before the main story. His four-armed, two-faced appearance became part of forbidden legends, while his twenty fingers survived as Special Grade Cursed Objects 25 66.

Four hundred years before the present, Kenjaku named Sukuna as the strongest person he had ever encountered. This revelation gave Hajime Kashimo a new goal: reincarnate in the future and challenge Sukuna at full strength 66.

Appearance

  • Original form: A misshapen body with four arms, two faces, and four scarlet eyes. His later all-out manifestation is also described as having two mouths 26 102.
  • While possessing Itadori: Retains Itadori’s appearance but develops black curse markings, scarlet pupils, and an additional pair of eyes. During the prison confrontation, he also extends four arms 28.
  • Inner-domain presentation: Sits on a throne of skulls above a mountain of white bones, surrounded by dark water and the smell of blood and rust 26.

Personality

Sukuna is cruel, proud, and dismissive of weakness. He treats Megumi as an entertaining toy, mocks Itadori’s fear of death, and tears out his vessel’s heart to make regaining control fatal. He recognizes Madara’s provocations but initially accepts them because his pride will not allow him to retreat without answering the challenge 28 29 30.

His arrogance does not prevent tactical judgment. He abandons the prison fight when his limited reserves and Madara’s strength make continued combat disadvantageous. Upon his complete revival, he immediately retreats beyond a hundred meters rather than risk capture inside Madara’s domain 30 94.

Madara awakens an intensity Sukuna had not previously experienced in hand-to-hand combat. Humiliation and envy gradually give way to focused determination, admiration, and a desire to improve. Even after accepting his defeat, Sukuna uses his final moments to test a new understanding of cursed techniques through one last attack 103 105 106 107 108 109.

Abilities & Skills

Dismantle and Cleave

Sukuna’s core offensive cursed techniques produce devastating slashes 99 101.

  • Uses repeated Dismantle slashes to cut through Madara’s burning forest and temporarily remain unharmed 99.
  • Cannot use Dismantle or Cleave during cursed technique burnout 101 104.
  • His final binding vow requires all future uses of both techniques to include a full chant, hand seals, and explicit target designation 109.

Domain Expansion: Malevolent Shrine

An open domain represented by an enormous shrine of bones and dark-red light. Its sure-hit effect delivers strengthened Dismantle slashes from multiple directions without warning 101.

  • Destructive output: Shreds the first meteor and contests a second, larger meteor by increasing its range and output 101.
  • Defensive application: Arranges slashes into rotating barriers around his body while directing others against incoming attacks 103.
  • Energy cost: Sustained, high-output deployment severely drains his reserves; collapse leaves him vulnerable to technique burnout 101 104.
  • Evolution: Learns to alter its construction under pressure from Heavenly Imperial Pillars, eventually establishing a temporary balance between the two domains 107.
  • Limit: Even its evolved form cannot overcome Madara’s innate world. Its final destruction inflicts severe physical, mental, and soul backlash 108 109.

Reverse Cursed Technique

Converts negative cursed energy into healing power, reconstructing damaged flesh, bones, and organs 30.

  • Regenerates a crushed wrist within seconds and later recreates Itadori’s missing heart 30.
  • Repairs his body while simultaneously maintaining Malevolent Shrine’s offensive and defensive slashes 103.
  • Becomes several times more efficient after his Black Flash breakthrough, though Madara can still inflict damage faster than he heals 105 106.
  • Learns to end cursed technique burnout by destroying and regenerating his overloaded brain, following Madara’s instructions 107.

Black Flash

Sukuna first demonstrates Black Flash during his final battle with Madara, entering an intensely focused state after recognizing what his fighting spirit lacks 105.

  • His breakthrough punch tears a bone-deep wound through Madara’s reinforced arm 105.
  • Subsequently incorporates Black Flash into punches and kicks throughout their close-combat exchanges 106.
  • Repeated use improves cursed energy control, accelerates healing, shortens burnout, and strengthens his understanding of Malevolent Shrine 106.

Hollow Wicker Basket

An anti-domain technique that temporarily holds back the effects of Heavenly Imperial Pillars 107.

  • Uses his four arms and two mouths to maintain protection while attempting to reconstruct Malevolent Shrine 107.
  • Provides time for experimentation but does not itself overturn Madara’s domain advantage 107.

Soul and Vessel Interaction

Sukuna’s soul resides inside Itadori, whose exceptional constitution can suppress it completely and prevent Sukuna from directly affecting reality 26.

  • Uses domain expansion to suppress Itadori’s consciousness during the prison incident, at a considerable cursed energy cost 30.
  • Slashes Mahito’s soul when Self-Embodiment of Perfection brings Mahito into contact with him. The damage causes Mahito’s unstable domain to collapse 55.
  • Evaluates Megumi and Madara as possible future vessels, valuing the Ten Shadows Technique and Madara’s ocular powers respectively 30.

Close Combat and Tactical Analysis

Sukuna reinforces his body with cursed energy and draws on extensive battle experience 29 30 99.

  • Moves too quickly for Megumi to follow, tears apart Great Serpent through brute force, and survives its combination attack with Nue without injury 29.
  • Recognizes Madara’s attempt to exhaust his cursed energy through provocation and healing 30.
  • Studies Madara’s abilities from within Itadori and uses that information to avoid immediate domain capture after revival 94.
  • Despite his expertise, is repeatedly outmatched by Madara in hand-to-hand combat 30 105.

Maximum Technique: Hollow Sky

A final attack developed from Sukuna’s late insight into the essence of cursed techniques 109.

  • Burns his remaining cursed energy and soul’s will to establish a binding vow granting one strike at 120 percent output 109.
  • Launches the attack while undergoing purification by Jacob’s Ladder, cutting Madara cleanly in half 109.
  • Does not secure lasting victory: Madara later rewrites his death through Izanagi 111.

Associated Cursed Objects

  • Sukuna’s Fingers — Twenty Special Grade Cursed Objects formed from his fingers. Reuniting all twenty within Itadori enables his complete revival 66 94.
  • Curse attraction — Their presence draws curses. Mahito exploits a finger placed in Junpei’s home as part of his manipulation of Junpei 48 50.
  • Suspected influence on curse development — Megumi connects a cavern curse’s emergence to Itadori swallowing a finger and suspects another sealed finger is accelerating the main body’s birth 87.

Relationships

  • Yuji Itadori — Vessel and jailer. Itadori initially suppresses him perfectly; Sukuna treats him with contempt and uses his missing heart as leverage against him 26 28 29.
  • Madara Uchiha — Enemy, desired vessel, and ultimately an admired opponent. Madara deliberately pushes him toward breakthroughs before defeating him; Sukuna answers with a final lethal strike 30 105 107 109.
  • Megumi Fushiguro — Potential vessel whose Ten Shadows Technique interests him. Sukuna brutalizes Megumi and encourages him to reveal his stronger trump card 29 30.
  • Satoru Gojo — Protector of Itadori and backup fighter for the exorcism plan. Sukuna initially regards the Six Eyes sorcerer as an interesting example of the era’s strongest fighters 31 94 103.
  • Uraume — Devoted follower who addresses him as “Lord Sukuna” and considers his revival inevitable 63.
  • Kenjaku — Regards recruiting Sukuna as a condition for defeating the sorcerers and seeks to recover Itadori as the key to his revival 33 66.
  • Hajime Kashimo — Seeks reincarnation specifically to fight Sukuna at full strength; no confrontation between them occurs in the documented events 66 72.
  • Angel — Ancient enemy who knows him as The Fallen. Accepts Madara’s request to erase him and later subjects him to Jacob’s Ladder 60 109.
  • Mahito — Suffers a soul-slashing retaliation after his domain touches Sukuna within Itadori 55.

Story Role / Major Arcs

Awakening Within Itadori

After Itadori swallows a finger, Gojo brings him to Jujutsu High. Madara enters his inner world through the Sharingan and confronts Sukuna on his throne of bones. Although Sukuna threatens him, Madara withdraws safely after confirming that Itadori’s suppression is complete 26.

Special Prison Confrontation

Itadori relinquishes control to survive the special-grade threat at the prison. Sukuna then removes his heart, preventing a safe return of control, and overwhelms Megumi until Madara interrupts the attempted Mahoraga summoning 28 29.

Madara crushes Sukuna’s wrist with Susanoo and defeats him in successive close-combat exchanges. Recognizing the unfavorable situation, Sukuna regenerates the heart and retreats inside Itadori rather than continue wasting energy. This allows Itadori to survive without the binding vow Madara had feared 26 30.

Retaliation Against Mahito

When Madara’s clone breaches Mahito’s domain and sends Itadori inside, its sure-hit effect touches Sukuna’s soul. Sukuna responds by slashing Mahito’s soul, grievously wounding him and collapsing the domain 55.

Complete Sukuna Exorcism Plan

On March 19, 2019, the sorcerers deliberately reunite all twenty fingers inside Itadori at a heavily protected battlefield. Madara fights alone, with Gojo standing by as backup. Sukuna immediately creates distance to avoid Heavenly Imperial Pillars 94.

Madara’s burning forest, successive meteors, and Perfect Susanoo force Sukuna into his true form and leave him nearly exhausted. Rather than finish him immediately, Madara shifts to hand-to-hand combat to pursue his own breakthrough. Sukuna responds with Black Flashes, improved regeneration, and an evolved domain 99 101 102 103 104 105 106 107.

Defeat and Final Strike

Heavenly Imperial Pillars ultimately crushes the evolved Malevolent Shrine. Sukuna recognizes the fundamental gap between them and is left unable to mount effective resistance. Madara summons Angel, who begins purifying him with Jacob’s Ladder 108 109.

Sukuna nevertheless establishes a final binding vow and releases Hollow Sky, bisecting Madara. After returning through Izanagi, Madara watches Sukuna’s body disappear as the backlash brings him to his end, then quietly promises never to forget him 109 111.
