Appearance

  • Black suit: Wears a black suit when introduced at Baratie 17.
  • Curled eyebrows: His most frequently remarked-upon feature; Zoro regularly uses them as the basis for insults 17 26 34.
  • Cigarettes: Frequently lights or discards a cigarette before fighting 46 57 67 85.
  • Exaggerated lovestruck expressions: Displays heart-shaped eyes, nosebleeds, and a comically twisting, noodle-like posture around women 17 22 55 125.

Personality

Sanji treats food as something that must never be wasted and refuses to let people starve, regardless of their reputation or ability to pay. He attacks Fullbody for deliberately spilling food, feeds the penniless Gin, and serves Krieg despite the restaurant’s objections. His remark that nobody understands hunger better than he does hints at personal experience with starvation, though its circumstances are not explained in the supplied passages 17.

His compassion does not prevent him from defending Baratie. Before feeding Krieg, he warns him against harming the restaurant; after Krieg betrays that promise, Sanji takes responsibility and attempts to confront him despite his injuries 17 18.

Sanji is intensely flirtatious and readily offers women free meals, flowers, tea, and protection. His chivalry also creates a serious combat weakness: he cannot strike Bon Clay while Bon Clay wears Vivi’s face, even though he knows the appearance is a disguise 17 46 49 55. His infatuation can override financial judgment, as shown when he agrees to pay Shakky five hundred million Beli for dinner before Nami intervenes 87.

His rivalry with Zoro drives both arguments and training. They compete over bounties, hunting, and combat results, but cooperate effectively against stronger enemies. Sanji also accepts practical decisions when the crew’s safety is involved, supporting a stronger ship because the Going Merry can no longer withstand their training or increasingly dangerous opponents 26 34 49 64 68 130.

Abilities & Skills

Cooking

Sanji supplies the Straw Hats’ daily meals and prepares large banquets for allies and celebrations 22 40 71.

  • Unusual ingredients: Turns the captured Momoo into a multi-dish feast 22.
  • Collaborative cooking: Works with Alabasta’s palace chefs and later cooks alongside Priests and Shandians at Sky Island’s victory banquet 48 61.
  • Culinary curiosity: Exchanges cooking tips with a chef at Whiskey Peak 32.

Kicking Combat

Sanji fights primarily through fast kicks, spinning strikes, and combinations targeting different parts of an opponent’s body 24 46 87.

  • Defeats a Tyrannosaurus rex with a kick to the head on Little Garden 34.
  • Knocks a CP0 agent unconscious with a single spinning kick and later defeats Kaku with Mincemeat Kick 73 74.
  • Repeatedly kicks Duval between positions before finishing with a facial strike; subsequent kicks reshape Duval’s face 87.
  • Coordinates with Luffy and Zoro against Momoo, Smoker, Kuzan, and the Kraken 22 28 67 125.

Diable Jambe

Diable Jambe surrounds Sanji’s foot with flames and can be combined with Armament Haki. Its heat and power increase during his breakthrough against Kuzan 22 46 69.

Armament Haki

Sanji learns Armament through Mihawk’s instructions and later applies it directly to his feet and Diable Jambe attacks 22 28 46.

  • Logia combat: Helps strike and defeat Smoker despite his smoke transformation 28.
  • Combined reinforcement: Coats both feet while preparing to fight Kuzan 67.
  • Limits: Armament does not erase major strength gaps. Kuzan initially blocks the trio’s combined attack, while Kuma stops and repels Sanji’s Rotten Meat kick 67 85.

Tactical Adaptation

  • Exploiting transformation limits: Recognizes that Bon Clay must return to his own face to use Okama Kenpo and attacks during that opening 46.
  • Combination attacks: Uses Zoro’s tornado as cover to approach Kuzan 68.
  • Targeting openings: Attempts to pass a kick through the gap Zoro cuts into Kuzan’s Ice Puck 69.

History

Baratie and Recruitment

Sanji first appears as a Baratie cook whose flirting with Nami is interrupted by Zeff. His decision to feed Gin attracts Luffy’s attention and convinces the Straw Hats that he should become their cook. Luffy repeatedly invites him, but Sanji initially refuses 17.

After receiving food from Sanji, Krieg attacks him and attempts to seize the restaurant. Sanji tries to handle the danger himself, only to be shot by Krieg’s concealed guns. Luffy and Zoro intervene, calling him their crewmate before he has accepted the invitation; their words move him 18.

Zeff recognizes that Sanji wants to sail but feels indebted to him. He recruits the other cooks into an act of driving Sanji away, then urges him to find All Blue. Sanji sees through the performance, kneels to thank Zeff, and joins Luffy’s crew 21 22.

East Blue and the Grand Line

Sanji helps defeat the Arlong Pirates after promising to protect Nami’s hometown. Following the crew’s departure, he receives a sixty-million-Beli bounty and immediately becomes a target for Zoro’s teasing. In Loguetown, he wins a cooking contest and joins Luffy and Zoro in defeating Smoker with their newly acquired Armament Haki 22 24 26 27 28.

On Little Garden, his hunting contest with Zoro leads him to defeat a Tyrannosaurus rex. Later, his complaint that Nami has missed breakfast prompts Liu Qing to suspect that she has fallen ill, leading the crew to seek medical help 34 36.

Alabasta and Sky Island

In Alabasta, Sanji defeats Bon Clay after overcoming the tactical obstacle posed by Vivi’s copied face. He then joins the pursuit of Crocodile. During the crew’s departure, he defeats Kuro and begins practicing the Six Powers after receiving new training instructions 46 47 49.

On Sky Island, Sanji defeats Satori before the Priest can use his Impact Dial effectively. He subsequently attacks Enel alongside Luffy and Zoro, then helps prepare the banquet celebrating the island’s peace 57 59 61.

Kuzan, Water 7, and Thriller Bark

Sanji fights Kuzan with the crew when the Admiral demands that they abandon Robin. Although initially frozen, he later rejoins the battle and achieves a substantial increase in flame intensity and Armament strength 67 68 69 70.

At Water 7, he defeats a CP0 agent and Kaku. When the crew learns of Ace’s planned execution, Sanji joins his companions in promising to help with the rescue and train harder 73 74 79.

During the confrontation with Kuma at Thriller Bark, Sanji’s Rotten Meat kick is effortlessly blocked and repelled, exposing the gap between his offensive power and Kuma’s defenses 85.

Sabaody, Marineford, and Training

Duval attacks Sanji because Sanji’s wanted-poster image resembles him and has ruined his life. Sanji defeats him and inadvertently gives him a more attractive face through repeated kicks. Duval becomes grateful, offers the Flying Fish Riders’ assistance, and supplies signal flares; Sanji later uses one to mobilize the riders in the search for Camie 87 88.

Sanji also appears at Marineford, where a Marine-uniformed Okama Kenpo fighter challenges him. Afterward, he reaches Kamabakka Kingdom for training, reacts fearfully to his surroundings, and asks Inazuma whether the experience can truly make him stronger 94 108.

Reunion and Fish-Man Island

After the two-year separation, Sanji returns to the Thousand Sunny and immediately rushes toward the women aboard, earning a lightning strike from Nami. Zoro labels him “Number Nine” according to his arrival-order ranking 123.

During the descent toward Fish-Man Island, Sanji helps Luffy and Zoro capture the Kraken using individual coating bubbles supplied by Liu Qing. However, his excitement around women repeatedly causes severe nosebleeds, requiring transfusions and nearly carrying him outside the ship’s coating bubble 125.

His condition worsens upon reaching Fish-Man Island. Treatment at the Mermaid Cafe stabilizes him, and Chopper subsequently limits his exposure to mermaids. By the rebellion, Sanji has returned to normal and joins Zoro in attacking the fish-man pirates and human slaves charging at the crew 126 127 128 130.

Zephyr and Saiken Island

After the Straw Hats rescue Zephyr, the former Admiral attacks Sanji, Luffy, and Zoro upon discovering that they are pirates. Liu Qing restrains him, and Luffy ultimately lets Zephyr and his companions leave 134.

On Saiken Island, Sanji fights Binz while Zoro takes Ain as his opponent. Binz eventually drives Sanji back and retreats toward the coast as the island faces destruction 141.
