Background / History
Cocoyasi Village and Treasure Hunting
Nami’s hometown fell under the control of Fish-Man pirates who demanded monthly payments from the villagers and killed those unable to pay. She pursued a demand of 100 million Beli to buy the village’s freedom, stealing treasure from pirates to raise the money. Her determination to return for the villagers kept her fighting even when Alvida’s crew surrounded her 1 8 11.
Arlong had no intention of honoring the arrangement. Anticipating that Nami would return with enough money, he contacted Captain Nezumi and offered him twenty percent to confiscate her savings under a false pretext 22.
Meeting the Straw Hats
Liu Qing and Luffy saved Nami aboard Alvida’s ship, but she refused Luffy’s invitation because she disliked pirates. She rejected him again at Shells Town, pointing out that his small crew lacked even a proper ship 2 7.
In Orange Town, Nami stole Buggy’s treasure and Grand Line Sea Chart, then tried to escape punishment by presenting Luffy as her captured boss. When Buggy demanded that she kill Luffy as proof of loyalty, she refused, knocked out the pirate who lit the cannon fuse, and burned her hand trying to extinguish it. Liu Qing protected her and healed the injury 8 9.
Nami subsequently helped defeat Buggy by gathering his separated body parts into a sack. She gave Luffy the sea chart, shared treasure with Liu Qing, and agreed to serve temporarily as navigator. After Liu Qing demonstrated his overwhelming strength and the crew promised to help her village without demanding payment, she agreed to join if they defeated the Fish-Man pirates 11 12.
Returning Home
Nami returned to Cocoyasi Village with the crew and told Nojiko that she had found her “true companions.” She accompanied the villagers and Straw Hats toward Arlong Park, where Liu Qing created a thorn barrier that both prevented the enemy’s escape and protected the village 23 24.
During the destruction of the Arlong Pirates, Nami saved Hachi because he had often helped her. She ordered him to leave the East Blue, acknowledging his kindness while stating that she still hated Fish-Men. Before departing afterward, she and Liu Qing transplanted orange trees onto the Going Merry. She then said goodbye to her sister and the villagers to pursue her dream 24 26.
Grand Line Voyages
At the entrance to the Grand Line, Crocus gave Nami a Log Pose and explained why ordinary charts and compasses were unreliable there. Her weather predictions helped the crew endure the violent conditions on the voyage to Whiskey Peak 31.
Nami sympathized with Vivi’s struggle to save Alabasta because it resembled her own experience under Arlong. She agreed that the crew would help defeat Crocodile without taking treasure as payment. Later, a poisonous insect bite left her dangerously feverish, prompting an urgent diversion toward Drum Island 33 36.
After Alabasta, Nami invited Vivi to continue sailing with the crew, though Vivi ultimately stayed with her country. Nami then played a decisive role in reaching Sky Island by explaining the Knock Up Stream’s formation, identifying its outlet, and directing the Going Merry’s sails through the ascent 48 49 53.
Water 7 and Sabaody
Nami participated in the crew’s battle against CP0 in Water 7, concentrating her attacks on one agent alongside Robin, Usopp, and Chopper. She later ended the argument over their new ship’s name by accepting Iceburg’s suggestion of Thousand Sunny 73 80.
At Sabaody, Nami encountered Hachi again after his capture by the Flying Fish Riders. Although the meeting revived painful memories, she used Gust Sword to cut apart his restraints rather than harm him 86.
Two Years on Weatheria
Kuma scattered the Straw Hats to separate training destinations, with a reunion planned for two years later. Nami arrived on Weatheria, where Haredas rescued her and she learned that the island was inhabited by weather scientists 90 109.
Recognizing her weakness, Nami devoted herself to studying in the library. She explained that she needed to protect herself for the sake of both her own dream and her companions’ ambitions. By the end of her stay, she had learned to create Weather Balls and received a specially constructed Clima-Tact 109 122.
Nami returned to the Thousand Sunny at Sabaody with greater confidence, demonstrating a wind-assisted landing and lightning attack. During the subsequent underwater voyage, she enforced precautions against damaging the ship’s coating when Luffy and Zoro proposed reckless attacks 123 125.
Appearance
- Hair: Described as yellow-haired at her first appearance 1.
- Early clothing: Wears a sailor outfit while infiltrating Alvida’s treasure room 1.
- After training: Described as curvaceous and lightly dressed when she returns from Weatheria 123.
Personality
Nami is resourceful and willing to deceive enemies, using disguises of loyalty and improvised stories to escape danger. She frames Luffy as her boss before Buggy and later pretends the crew are innocent tourists when questioned at Navarone Fortress. However, she refuses to become an accomplice to murder, risking injury to stop Buggy’s cannon from firing at Luffy 8 9 63.
Her attachment to money begins with the effort to free Cocoyasi Village, but her enthusiasm for treasure continues afterward. Robin wins her approval with gems, and Nami helps organize the theft of two enormous gold pillars from Sky Island. She is nevertheless willing to abandon payment when she identifies with someone’s suffering, as she does with Vivi 11 33 50 61.
Nami frequently scolds or strikes crewmates whose behavior threatens the voyage. Behind that temper is a strong sense of responsibility: she manages supplies, directs shipboard work, and studies relentlessly on Weatheria because she does not want to endanger her companions by remaining weak 15 28 109 125.
Abilities & Skills
Navigation and Meteorology
Nami directs the crew through unstable seas using weather observation, charts, and the Log Pose 28 31.
- Weather prediction: Anticipates dangerous changes during the voyage to Whiskey Peak, reducing their impact on the ship 31.
- Knock Up Stream analysis: Explains its formation through trapped volcanic heat and pressure, then identifies the launch point 53.
- Sail handling: Commands adjustments to catch the wind and align the Going Merry with the rising current 53.
- Shipboard knowledge: Understands and remembers Merry’s explanation of the Going Merry when Luffy, Zoro, and Liu Qing do not 15.
- Underwater safety: Explains the ship’s coating and stops attacks that could rupture it 125.
Clima-Tact Combat
Nami’s ranged combat centers on weather and air attacks produced through her Clima-Tact. Before Weatheria, her combat power is described as entirely dependent on the weapon 71.
| Technique | Documented Use |
|---|---|
| Weather: Tornado | Attacks Kuzan during the crew’s confrontation with him 67. |
| Clima-Tact: Gust Sword | Fires an air attack at Kuzan; later cuts Hachi’s restraints 68 86. |
| Weather: Wind Sword | Contributes to a coordinated attack against a CP0 agent 73. |
| Weather: Air Sword | Launches a sword-shaped air projectile at Kuma, though his defense blocks it 85. |
| Thunderbolt Tempo | Forms a thundercloud from black bubbles released by her Clima-Tact and strikes Sanji with lightning 123. |
- Early limitations: Kuzan freezes her air attack and subsequently traps her in ice. Liu Qing judges Usopp’s original Clima-Tact inadequate for the challenges ahead 68.
- Post-training mobility: Uses a gust of wind to support her body and land safely aboard the Thousand Sunny 123.
Weather Ball Creation
Nami learns to make Weather Balls during her Weatheria training 122.
- Can change local weather and unleash powerful wind, lightning, and related phenomena.
- Haredas warns that excessive use can disrupt natural weather worldwide; the power must be used sparingly 122.
Armament Haki
Nami can use Armament Haki, including direct coating of her fists 67 73 125.
- Participates in Haki-coated supporting attacks against Kuzan 67.
- Is included among the Straw Hats whom CP0 identifies as having learned Armament Haki 73.
- Uses visibly stated Haki coating on her fists during the deep-sea voyage 125.
Theft and Deception
- Treasure theft: Infiltrates both Alvida’s and Buggy’s treasure rooms 1 8.
- Smoke-screen escape: Uses smoke bombs to evade Buggy’s pursuing pirates 8.
- Improvised acting: Presents Luffy as her criminal superior to Buggy and feigns distress while posing as a tourist before Jonathan 8 63.
- Tactical opportunism: Disables Buggy’s reassembly by bagging his scattered body parts 11.
Practical Skills
- Staff fighting: Knocks a pirate unconscious with one blow 9.
- Mending: Offers to repair Luffy’s damaged straw hat 11.
- Cooking: Prepares the crew’s founding feast, though she complains about the workload 15.
- Supply management: Organizes shopping and identifies when provisions need replenishing 15 28.
- Money management: Handles requests for crew spending and initiates the division of their Sky Island gold 26 64.
