Arc 6Kaguya’s Fragments

Shuo faced Kaguya as she emerged from the moon, then chose to protect the fragments of her scattered body rather than destroy them. When the fragments revealed that Ōtsutsuki Isshiki was hunting Kaguya, Shuo regained his light and set out with them for the moon, with Sai following.

  • Shuo confronted Kaguya beneath the cracking moon, and his light damaged her while leaving a burning speck inside her, and he survived and later fought off her cloud with the light that had returned.
  • Shuo began sheltering Kaguya’s scattered fragments, giving them candy and names, and refused to let Kaguya reclaim the light they carried.
  • Kaguya appeared before Shuo and her fragments, eased Hand Princess Big’s pain, and agreed to leave the four with Shuo while she searched for the others.
  • At the Five Kage Summit, Shuo defended the fragments’ choice to stay with him, and Gaara vouched for them so the Raikage accepted their presence in the Land of Fire.
  • More fragments joined Shuo, who shared Miyoko’s candies with them as the light in his palm grew brighter.
  • A vast crowd of fragments gathered at Shuo’s shelter, and their enormous torso told him that Ōtsutsuki Isshiki was targeting Kaguya on the moon.
  • The torso gave Shuo Kaguya’s final tear, restoring his former power and revealing that his light had taken root in the fragments and connected them to him.
  • Shuo left for the far side of the moon with the fragments to bring Kaguya back, and Sai hurried after him.
Chapters 126–150 Vol. 2 Read

Ch. 126Three Shadows

Shuo discovered that Madara had been summoned with Impure World Reincarnation and sent Sai to find the person controlling him. After Sai disrupted the summoning, Shuo agreed to join Pain and Konan in sealing the Ten-Tails’ surviving consciousness within the clouds, as something enormous began opening its eyes above them.

  • Shuo recognized Madara’s Impure World Reincarnation and located the controller in a cave three kilometers east of the village.
  • Shuo sent Sai to the cave while he stayed behind to face Madara, despite his dwindling strength and reopened wound.
  • Pain revealed that the Ten-Tails’ consciousness survived its shell’s destruction and that Shuo’s light could help seal it.
  • Sai found and dealt with the controller, causing Madara’s summoned body to crumble away.
  • Shuo agreed to help Pain and Konan seal the Ten-Tails in exchange for Pain leaving Konoha alone, and the three flew toward the dark clouds.
  • Sai watched them depart as the clouds shook and an enormous being opened its eyes within them.

Ch. 127The eye in the clouds

Shuo entered the clouds and found the Ten-Tails’ consciousness draining Pain and Konan, but after freeing them he encountered Kaguya Otsutsuki, who claimed his light was hers. The clouds dispersed, and Shuo warned Sai that they were in serious trouble while Obito watched from Hokage Rock and said that “she” had awakened.

  • Shuo entered the darkness inside the clouds and saw the Ten-Tails’ eye holding Pain and Konan in black tentacles that drained their chakra.
  • Shuo used a blade of golden light to free Pain and Konan, then confronted the enormous eye.
  • The eye became a woman who identified herself as Kaguya Otsutsuki and said Shuo’s light was hers, temporarily lent to him until her return.
  • Kaguya vanished, and Shuo rushed out of the clouds after they dispersed.
  • Sai asked Shuo what had happened, and Shuo warned him that they had gotten themselves into serious trouble.
  • Obito watched from Hokage Rock and murmured that she had awakened.

Ch. 128The Progenitor of Chakra

After Kaguya Ōtsutsuki’s projection appeared and claimed Shuo’s light, the survivors prepared for her possible return while Shuo recovered and salvaged keepsakes from Konoha’s ruins. The chapter ended with Obito troubled by a future choice as something stirred on the moon.

  • Shuo told Tsunade and the others that Kaguya had touched him and said his light belonged to her, and Obito explained that she had appeared through a projection while her real body remained sealed on the moon.
  • Tsunade put Konoha on wartime footing, ordered contact with Kumogakure and Iwagakure, sent Jiraiya to research Kaguya, and asked Gaara to watch Sunagakure’s border while Shuo recovered.
  • Shuo asked what it meant that he was the one someone had chosen, but nobody could answer him.
  • Shuo and Sai dug through the ruined sweet shop and recovered two intact blue-and-white plates; the proprietress then gave Shuo three saved orange candies.
  • Obito watched Shuo leave, questioned what he might have to choose one day, and the full moon seemed to stir as if an eye were opening.

Ch. 129A visitor in the moonlight

Shuo brought a plate to Tsunade and asked her to find the name of the shopkeeper who had died in Konoha’s destruction. On the way back, Kaguya appeared as a thought, named the shopkeeper Miyoko, and told Shuo that his life and light belonged to her and would return to her when he died.

  • Shuo showed Tsunade the plate and candy wrapper the shopkeeper had given him, explaining that he wanted to know her name; Tsunade agreed to check the records.
  • Minato asked whether anyone would remember Shuo if he died, and Shuo said Sai would; Sai silently stood beside him.
  • Shuo asked Sai if he would remember him, and Sai said he obviously would.
  • At the ruins of the general store, Kaguya appeared and told Shuo that he was the one she had chosen and that his light would return to her when he died.
  • Kaguya revealed that the shopkeeper’s name was Miyoko, then vanished; Shuo noticed a faint golden glow in his palm and said her words seemed true.
  • As Shuo and Sai returned to sleep, a thin black shadow appeared along the moon’s edge.

Ch. 130The crack

Shuo learned that Kaguya was emerging from a crack in the moon’s seal and that he was prophesied to oppose her with light, possibly at the cost of his life. With the moon nearing Konoha and the crack widening, Tsunade ordered everyone to prepare for the confrontation.

  • Shuo and Sai saw that the moon remained huge in the daylight and hurried to the temporary Hokage Building.
  • Tsunade told the gathered ninja that Kaguya was crawling out through a crack in the moon’s seal.
  • Obito revealed a prophecy that gave Konoha at most three days and named Shuo as the one who would oppose Kaguya with light.
  • Obito told Shuo the prophecy said he might die, and Tsunade ordered everyone to prepare while Shuo focused on recovering.
  • Shuo returned to the shelter with Sai and joked that Sai should eat his candy if he died, while Kaguya’s eye watched them from the widening crack.

Ch. 131The last day

As the moon’s seal neared breaking, Shuo saw a mysterious light that only he could perceive and spent the final day with Sai and the others awaiting the crisis. Kaguya’s hand emerged from the moon and fixed on Shuo before retreating, while she called him “my light” as he went to sleep.

  • Shuo woke to a flickering light in his palm that Sai could not see, and learned the seal would break the following night.
  • Shuo and Sai went to the Hokage Building, where Tsunade and the others gathered beneath the enormous, cracking moon; Shuo gave Tsunade a candy for comfort.
  • Shuo searched the burned sweet shop ruins, found two shards of the porcelain plate, and said goodbye to the woman who had given him candy.
  • On the way back, Kaguya’s pale hand emerged from the moon and pointed at Shuo before withdrawing after their eyes met.
  • Shuo told Sai that he might not return the next day, and Sai insisted he come back to eat his own candy.
  • Kaguya watched Shuo sleeping in the shack and called him “my light” as the moon drew closer.

Ch. 132Countdown

Shuo discovered that Kaguya had marked his palm with a Rinnegan that was draining his life, leaving him at most three days to live. As Kaguya began emerging from the moon, Shuo prepared to face her and paid a quiet farewell to the candy shop owner he had lost.

  • Shuo showed Sai the purple eye in his palm, but Sai could not see it.
  • At the Hokage Building, Tsunade and the others saw Kaguya’s mark, and Pain warned Shuo that its black line would reach his heart and kill him within three days.
  • Shuo said he would settle things with Kaguya within the same three-day span, and Sai gave him candy to save for his return.
  • Shuo visited the ruins of the sweet shop, remembered the woman who had given him candy, and said goodbye before going to fight.
  • Shuo gave the emerging Kaguya the middle finger as her face appeared through the widening crack in the moon.

Ch. 133The eve of the seal's breaking

On the eve of Kaguya’s emergence, Shuo told the gathered Five Kage and allied ninja that his light could last for only one fight and that he would confront her alone by striking the eye in the sky. He returned to the shelter to rest with Sai as the sky darkened, unaware that the mark on his hand held a secret beyond its threat to his life.

  • Shuo told Sai that the spreading mark would reach his heart around the same time the next day, while Sai urged him to show more concern.
  • Tsunade assembled ninja from the Five Great Villages and said Kaguya would emerge that night, leaving them with no plan but to fight.
  • Shuo told the Five Kage that his light would last for one fight and identified Kaguya’s eye as the place to strike because her true body was behind it.
  • Shuo said he would go up alone, explaining that the others would be killed and that Kaguya’s mark meant he could not escape her.
  • Shuo went to the shelter to sleep, and Sai later brought rice balls as Kaguya’s face remained fixed on him in the darkening sky.

Ch. 134Dusk

Kaguya emerged from the moon and descended on Konoha, while Shuo prepared to use the light in his palm to stop her. After she landed and demanded the light back, Shuo activated it against her, leaving both of them vanished in a burst of light.

  • Shuo woke to find Kaguya revealed in the sky, and he and Sai went to the Hokage Building as the village fell into chaos.
  • Shuo told the Five Kage and the assembled fighters that he needed Kaguya to land before he could concentrate the light into one strike.
  • Tsunade sent the others to hold the front lines, while Shuo gave Sai an orange candy wrapper and waited for Kaguya to land.
  • Kaguya landed among the ruins, killing dozens of people, then called Shuo to her and demanded that he return her light.
  • Shuo ate his last candy and let Kaguya's black light strike his palm, triggering an explosion of white light that swallowed them both.
  • Sai waited amid the silence and pleaded for Shuo to return, while Shuo's fate remained unknown.

Ch. 135The light went out

After the light vanished, Tsunade found Shuo without a pulse or breath, and her medical chakra could not stay in his body. Kaguya left after discovering Shuo’s light had lodged inside her, while Shuo later sat up, leaving the battle’s outcome uncertain.

  • Sai found Shuo’s cold hand in the darkness and held it as Tsunade arrived with a torch.
  • Tsunade found Shuo unconscious with no pulse, heartbeat, or breath, and tried unsuccessfully to heal him.
  • Kaguya discovered a speck of Shuo’s light rooted inside her, then vanished as the moon disappeared and daylight returned.
  • Obito asked Tsunade why Kaguya had left, and Tsunade said Shuo’s light was turning against her.
  • Sai remained beside Shuo, who slowly sat up while Sai stood silently in the doorway.

Ch. 136Embers

Shuo revived after Miyoko fed him one of the candies she had saved for him, but he revealed that the light he had left inside Kaguya would continue to torment her. As Shuo rested in the shelter, Kaguya approached Konoha, intent on reclaiming what she had lost.

  • Miyoko gave the apparently lifeless Shuo a candy, and he woke, calling it bitter before admitting it was sweet.
  • Shuo told Pain that he had given his light to Kaguya but left a burning piece of it inside her to torment her.
  • Sai helped Shuo back to the shelter, where Shuo asked him to bury two broken plates from the sweets shop.
  • That night, Kaguya's cloud drew close to Konoha, and she vowed to take back what belonged to her while the light inside her continued to hurt her.

Ch. 137Light over the ruins

Shuo recovered enough to leave the shelter with Nagato and Sai, and buried the broken plates from the sweet shop. As Kaguya’s approaching cloud drew nearer, Shuo and the others prepared to face her return.

  • Shuo learned that Nagato was still nearby because he wanted to ask about the light Shuo had left inside Kaguya, and Nagato revealed that Kaguya was his mother.
  • Shuo told Nagato the light would keep Kaguya in pain but would not kill her, then decided to bury the two broken plates from the sweet shop.
  • Shuo and Sai buried the plates beneath a stone, and Nagato gave Shuo an intact plate he had found in the general store’s ruins.
  • Shuo sensed Kaguya’s cloud approaching, and Nagato said she would likely come to force the light out of herself.
  • Kaguya watched Shuo from within the cloud as the light continued to torment her, while Tsunade, Minato, Obito, Rin, Kakashi, Pain, and Konan gathered near Shuo.

Ch. 138Eyes in the Clouds

Shuo saw Kaguya watching him from the shed and found that a faint light had returned to his palm. He used it to drive her cloud away, then collapsed; after waking, he and the others faced uncertainty over whether Kaguya had escaped or was preparing another attack.

  • Shuo woke after dreaming of light and saw Kaguya's eye in the shed roof, while a small light reappeared in his palm.
  • At dawn, Kaguya's cloud reached Konoha with three eyes, and Nagato explained that she had grown stronger by absorbing the world's energy and Shuo's light.
  • Shuo decided to fight Kaguya despite having only a little light, and he walked into the clearing as Sai warned him and then let him go.
  • Shuo sent his light toward the cloud, where it scattered into countless specks; Kaguya screamed, and the cloud and her three eyes disappeared.
  • Shuo collapsed into Sai's arms, and a severed hand with a pale purple eye fell from the sky; after waking later, Shuo found everyone watching it, unsure whether Kaguya had fled or would strike again.

Ch. 139The severed hand

After Shuo’s remaining light destroyed Kaguya’s body, her severed hand came to life and asked him to restore it. Shuo took her into the shelter and decided to keep her after she showed she liked candy, while she quietly murmured “Mom” beneath the moon.

  • The severed hand moved, spoke to Shuo, and explained that his light had blown apart her body, leaving only the hand.
  • Shuo refused to kill Kaguya and invited her to follow him, then brought her to the shelter with Sai.
  • Shuo told Sai he would let Kaguya recover or leave on her own, but the hand asked for candy and swallowed it through the eye in her palm.
  • After seeing Kaguya enjoy the candy, Shuo changed his mind and decided to keep her.
  • That night, Kaguya stared at the moon and whispered “Mom,” while Shuo slept and Sai watched her.

Ch. 140Hand Princess

Shuo named the surviving hand fragment of Kaguya Hand Princess and brought her to the grave of the woman who had given him candy. Their quiet outing ended when another Kaguya fragment appeared in a black cloud and found them.

  • Shuo told Sai that the hand was part of Kaguya, then gave her the name Hand Princess after she asked for his name.
  • Shuo placed candy on the grave of the woman who had once given him candy, and Hand Princess offered a tear for her.
  • Shuo, Sai, and Hand Princess spotted a black cloud filled with reaching white hands, and Hand Princess recognized another piece of her mother inside it.
  • Hand Princess explained that Kaguya had been blown into many pieces, and the hands in the cloud turned toward her and Shuo.
  • A hostile voice from the cloud said it had found them as Shuo, Sai, and Hand Princess braced for its approach.

Ch. 141Their Own Kind

Shuo confronted a cloud of hands that wanted to consume Hand Princess and offered its largest fragment candy and a place to stay instead. The cloud withdrew, leaving a second hand behind, while an unexplained cloud remained on the horizon watching Shuo and the two hands.

  • The hands emerged from a black cloud, and Hand Princess told Shuo that their largest fragment wanted to eat it and could not be outrun.
  • Shuo stepped forward despite having lost his light, and the largest hand challenged him to stop it.
  • Shuo spoke to the largest hand about its loneliness and offered to let it stay with Hand Princess and have candy if it did not cause trouble or eat people.
  • The largest hand withdrew into the cloud, which dispersed and left a smaller hand beside Hand Princess.
  • Shuo gave both hands candy, named them Hand Princess Big and Hand Princess Small, and returned to the shelter with Sai.
  • An unmoving cloud remained on the distant horizon, watching Shuo and the two hands.

Ch. 142The third one

Shuo and Sai sheltered Hand Princess Big and Hand Princess Small, two fragments of Kaguya, and Shuo continued feeding them candy. When a new foot-shaped fragment arrived and joined them as Hand Princess Three, Shuo went to search for more candy while a mysterious black cloud watched from afar.

  • Shuo told Sai he would keep the Kaguya fragments if they came to him, despite Sai warning him about Kaguya's danger.
  • Hand Princess Big and Hand Princess Small called the moon their mother, prompting Shuo to wonder whether Kaguya could be reassembled from her fragments.
  • A giant foot with an eye in its sole arrived at the ruins, and Hand Princess Big and Hand Princess Small protected Shuo from it.
  • Shuo gave the foot two candies, named it Hand Princess Three, and watched it shrink and join the other fragments.
  • Shuo set out for the general store to look for more candy as the three fragments followed him, while a black cloud watched them from the distant sky.

Ch. 143The eye

Shuo brought Hand Princess Big, Hand Princess Small, and Hand Princess Three to Miyoko for candy, then comforted them after learning no one had cared for them before. The chapter ended when a giant eye appeared in the clouds, called the fragments its children, and bore down on Shuo and the trembling trio.

  • Shuo took the three Hand Princesses to the ruined general store, where Miyoko gave him her last bag of candy.
  • Shuo shared the candies with the three fragments and told Miyoko he would keep them as long as they wanted him to.
  • Hand Princess Big told Shuo that nobody had ever cared for them, and Shuo gave it another candy.
  • A dark cloud approached the shelter with a gigantic pale purple eye inside it, and the eye said, "Found you..."
  • Hand Princess Big called the eye "Mom" as Shuo faced it, and the clouds began pressing down on them.

Ch. 144Mother

Uchiha Saku confronted Kaguya, who wanted to reclaim the light sustaining her three fragments, and refused to let her take it. Kaguya relented and joined them as Hand Princess Four, while another fragment watched from a dark cloud, promising that all the fragments would soon gather.

  • Kaguya's eye appeared in the sky and ordered Hand Princess Big, Hand Princess Small, and Hand Princess Three to come to her, but Shuo stood between them and her.
  • Shuo learned that the fragments carried his remaining light and that taking it would kill them, so he refused Kaguya's demand to reclaim it.
  • Shuo declared that he would protect the fragments with his life, and Kaguya chose not to take his light for now.
  • Kaguya shrank into a small eye, joined the group as Hand Princess Four, and received candy from Shuo.
  • Shuo noticed a pale face with purple eyes watching from a nearby black cloud, and the voice within said that all the fragments would soon be gathered.

Ch. 145The face

Uchiha Saku confronted the complete Kaguya when she came to reclaim the four Hand Princesses, but they chose to stay with him. Kaguya left to find her remaining fragments, while Saku discovered that a faint trace of his light remained within him.

  • Kaguya appeared as a vast face in the sky and demanded to know where Uchiha Saku's light was and to take back her children.
  • Hand Princess Big, Hand Princess Small, Hand Princess Three, and Hand Princess Four each refused to leave Saku, saying they wanted to stay with him.
  • Kaguya revealed that Saku's light still lingered inside him, then gave Hand Princess Big some of her power to ease its pain.
  • Kaguya agreed not to force the four to return and departed to find her remaining fragments, telling Saku she might not be his enemy next time.
  • After the sky cleared, Saku gave the four candy and noticed a faint speck of light glowing in his palm.

Ch. 146Five Kage Summit

Shuo took Hand Princess Four to Miyoko for more candy and promised the four Kaguya Fragments he would not let their mother take them if they wanted to stay. Obito then summoned Shuo and the fragments to meet the Five Kage, while an unidentified presence in a nearby cloud watched them.

  • Shuo asked Sai for candy, then went with Hand Princess Big, Hand Princess Small, Hand Princess Three, and Hand Princess Four to Miyoko's store.
  • Miyoko gave Shuo her last bag of chestnut candies, and Shuo shared them with the four fragments.
  • Hand Princess Big asked whether their mother would return and said she did not want to go with her; Shuo promised to let them stay and said he would stop her.
  • Obito told Shuo that Lady Tsunade wanted him and the fragments at the Five Kage Summit.
  • Shuo set off with the four fragments for the Hokage Building as an indistinct presence in a cloud watched them.

Ch. 147Five Kage Summit

Shuo defended keeping Kaguya’s four fragments with him at a summit of the Five Kage, and Gaara vouched for their safety so they could remain in Konoha. As Shuo left with the fragments, a dark cloud drew nearer, carrying an unknown presence that hinted at a new threat.

  • The Raikage and other Kage questioned Shuo about keeping the four fragments, but Shuo insisted they had done nothing wrong and did not want to leave him.
  • Hand Princess Big told the Kage that the fragments had not chosen their fate and wanted to stay with Shuo because he treated them kindly.
  • Shuo revealed that Kaguya had already returned, asked to take the fragments, and left after they refused.
  • The Raikage demanded that the fragments leave the Land of Fire or be taken into his custody, and Shuo refused to let him take them.
  • Gaara asked the fragments whether they wanted to remain in Konoha, then vouched for them; the Raikage accepted his guarantee.
  • Shuo left the summit with the fragments, while a dark cloud neared and an indistinct voice said that soon everyone would be gathered.

Ch. 148The Fragments

Shuo and Sai learned that Kaguya had sent more fragments to find the four creatures, but she would let them stay if they wished. After accepting Kaguya’s tear, Shuo led the growing group to buy candy, unaware of what the tear’s brightening light or the new arrivals would bring.

  • On the walk back, Hand Princess Big asked why people avoided the creatures, and Shuo reassured it that he would protect them.
  • At the shack, Sai said Kaguya would return for the fragments, while Hand Princess Big said it wanted to stay because Shuo gave it candy and made it feel safe.
  • A dozen fragments arrived at night and told Hand Princess Big that Kaguya would not force the creatures to return.
  • An ear fragment gave Shuo Kaguya’s tear as thanks, and the light in his palm grew brighter when he caught it.
  • With no candy left, Shuo set off to buy more, followed by the four creatures and the newly arrived fragments as Kaguya watched and vanished into the moonlight.

Ch. 149Good morning, Konoha

Shuo shared his last candy with the fragments, who revealed that they could taste sweetness through the light in his palm. As the fragments glowed together in Konoha, an unseen watcher in a distant cloud murmured that the time was near.

  • Thirty-eight of Kaguya's fragments gathered outside Miyoko's store, while Sai counted them and Miyoko complained that Shuo had used up the candy.
  • Shuo offered his last piece of candy, but Hand Princess Big and the others insisted that he eat it instead.
  • After Shuo ate the candy, the fragments said they could taste its sweetness through the light inside them, which had grown brighter in his palm.
  • Miyoko gave Shuo her hidden bag of fifty chestnut candies, and he shared one with each fragment as they glowed in the sunlight.
  • Tsunade and Minato watched the scene from the Hokage Building; Tsunade cursed Shuo, while Minato wondered what he would become.
  • An unseen presence in a distant cloud watched Shuo and the fragments and murmured, “Soon... just a little longer...”

Ch. 150Torso

On the 150th day, Shuo learned that Kaguya was in danger on the far side of the moon, threatened by Ōtsutsuki Isshiki. After Kaguya’s final tear restored Shuo’s light and linked it to her fragments, Shuo led them toward the moon to rescue her.

  • Shuo woke to find a vast crowd of Kaguya’s fragments gathered outside his shelter, led by an enormous torso.
  • The torso told Shuo that Kaguya was on the moon and that Ōtsutsuki Isshiki, stronger and more ruthless than her, was targeting her.
  • The torso gave Shuo Kaguya’s final tear, which activated the light she had left inside him and restored his former power.
  • The torso revealed that Shuo’s light had taken root in the fragments, connecting them to him as one.
  • Shuo set out for the far side of the moon with the fragments, and Sai hurried after him.
  • Tsunade and Minato watched the procession leave, while Minato said Shuo was going to bring someone back.
