Background / History

Garp is an established Marine hero whose reputation rests on decades of combat and repeated clashes with Roger. Before Yas’s assessment, he has also fought the Rocks Pirates in the New World. His experience makes him one of Headquarters’ principal sources of information about Rocks’s strength 3 4 24 29.

During his youth, Garp fought wild boars in the mountains. He recalls this while marveling that Yas has already awakened Armament Haki at an age when his own activities were far less extraordinary 21.

Appearance

Garp is tall and heavily built, with an iron-tower-like physique. His hair is described as white when he meets Yas at sea, but black during the later God Valley battle 5 75 180.

  • Dog-head hat: Worn during Yas’s recruit assessment and several Headquarters appearances 4 19.
  • Justice coat: Worn over a floral shirt during his meeting with Yas at sea 75.
  • God Valley attire: A white Marine uniform beneath a black coat; this appearance also includes a facial scar 180.
  • Battle injuries: Yas’s Three-Finger Nukite leaves his right arm in a cast and sling. He later returns from God Valley bloodied and exhausted 27 28 202.

Personality

Garp is boisterous, irreverent, and openly dismissive of formalities. He picks his nose during official business, barges into Sengoku’s office, and falls asleep during a confidential leadership meeting. His appetite for senbei and doughnuts frequently intrudes on his duties, including a request that Yas share Captain John’s treasure as “doughnut money” 4 20 28 170.

He admires courage and aggressive fighting spirit. Yas’s refusal to retreat wins his approval, and even a serious defeat leaves him exhilarated rather than resentful. His competitiveness can nevertheless become dangerous: frustration at being used as Yas’s training partner drives him to unleash a full-strength attack despite Zephyr’s warning that it could kill the recruit 5 25 27.

Garp initially favors decisive violence over judicial procedure when dealing with murderous pirates and slave traders. He repeatedly defends Yas against officers who regard him as uncontrollable. That support has limits: he tries to protect civilians, slaves, and Marines at God Valley, and later condemns the decision to place Yas at the top of the Marine hierarchy 20 89 189 205.

Abilities & Skills

Physical Strength and Taijutsu

Garp is a veteran hand-to-hand fighter who combines overwhelming punches with kicks, palm strikes, and finger attacks 25.

  • His uncoated, thirty-percent-strength straight punch generates a sonic boom and a visible compressed-air wave 24.
  • His punch barrage dents and warps the alloy walls of the special training ground 23.
  • He destroys a coastal gun emplacement and a pirate ship with individual punches during the Sparta Kingdom operation 81 87.
  • His Love Fist previously crushed Chinjao’s pointed head, which was capable of splitting the Ice Continent 25.

Armament Haki

Garp coats his fists and arms in exceptionally dense Armament Haki, using it for both striking and defense. Zephyr describes his defense as the era’s “Strongest Shield” 5 7 27.

  • Offense: Haki-coated punches repeatedly launch Yas across the training ground during their initial assessment 6.
  • Defense: He crosses his hardened arms to receive Four-Finger Nukite. The attack drives him back over a hundred meters but initially leaves only shallow, scorched indentations without drawing blood 7 8.
  • Limits: Three-Finger Nukite pierces his strongest coating and sends lightning into his body. Divine Punishment later annihilates his Haki on contact 26 76.

Observation Haki

Garp possesses battle-hardened Observation Haki sensitive enough to detect a trace of Yas’s newly developed divine presence through a Den Den Mushi connection 74.

  • The presence alarms him before he sees Yas in person 74.
  • His own speed and technique are eventually countered by Yas’s Mantra, which predicts his movements during their training battle 25.

Conqueror’s Haki

Garp can release Conqueror’s Haki as an intimidating pressure and infuse it into his punches alongside Armament Haki 76 89.

  • His pressure makes conservative Vice Admirals pale and struggle to breathe during the dispute over Yas 89.
  • His arrival at God Valley produces a black-and-red Haki shock wave that knocks out groups of Rocks Pirates 180.
  • His combined Haki strike fails against Divine Punishment, which swallows and dismantles its energy 76.

Six Powers

Garp integrates the Six Powers with his martial arts and Haki rather than relying exclusively on heavy punches 25.

  • Shave: Enables sudden close-range attacks and rapid movement that produces more than a dozen blurred afterimages 5 23.
  • Geppo: Allows him to rush through the air toward Yas after Rocks’s defeat 197.
  • Limit: Even a barrage of more than a hundred punches fails to touch Yas after his Observation Haki awakening 23.

Named Techniques

Technique Description
Love Fist / Iron Fist of Love His signature punch, used in training and punishment. Against Yas, a version using at least seventy percent of his strength damages Yas’s fist but also loses part of its own Haki coating 9 21 25.
Armament Haki Iron Fist A reinforced punch delivered with a pitch-black, metallic-looking Haki coating 5.
Galaxy Meteor / Galaxy Meteorite A full-strength attack gathering his power and Haki into his fists. Yas’s Three-Finger Nukite pierces its defense and causes the attack to collapse 25 26.
Galaxy Impact A massive black-and-red Conqueror’s Haki shock wave. Used alongside Roger’s Divine Departure to open a temporary passage through the all-devouring darkness 199.

Story Role / Major Arcs

Yas’s Assessment and Recruitment

  • Food dispute: Garp clashes with Yas over grilled meat in Marineford’s mess hall. His casual grip already pressures Yas’s template-enhanced body 4.
  • Special assessment: Zephyr selects Garp as an opponent who can withstand Yas fighting without restraint. Garp’s sustained assault pushes Yas past five-percent template fusion and helps trigger Four-Finger Nukite 3 6.
  • Recognition: After receiving the technique, Garp praises Yas and invites him aboard his warship to hunt pirates in the New World. He also supports awarding Yas the rank of major 8 9.

Haki Training and Defeat

  • Reward for the first mission: Garp defends Yas’s extermination of the Butcher Pirate Crew and brings him a giant Ironclad Bull to eat. Yas’s newly awakened Armament Haki leaves him visibly shocked 20.
  • Practical instruction: He joins Zephyr’s lesson, ambushes Yas with a kick, and then tests his newly awakened Observation Haki through repeated high-speed attacks 21 22 23.
  • Escalation: Their sparring develops into a destructive battle. Garp’s Galaxy Meteor is defeated by Three-Finger Nukite, leaving him unable to continue and requiring treatment 25 26 27.
  • Aftermath: Garp expresses admiration, demands a rematch, and backs granting Yas exceptional rank and operational freedom 27 28.

Support for Yas’s Independent Operations

  • Garp identifies Rocks as the toughest opponent he has encountered, encouraging Yas’s interest in hunting him 29.
  • He supports Yas’s demand to enter the New World’s most dangerous waters and treat its strongest pirates as prey 48 50.
  • After sensing Divine Punishment, he seeks Yas’s help at God Valley. His subsequent attempt to “test” Yas ends with his Haki erased and his arm severely injured 74 76 77.
  • He warns Yas about the Holy Knights and Saint Figarland Garling, then formally announces Yas’s appointment as an Admiral Candidate 77 78.

Sparta Kingdom Dispute

  • Garp joins the assault after Yas witnesses the kingdom’s forces kill civilians and children. He fights alongside the Leviathan’s soldiers while Yas pursues King Bach 81.
  • He defends the kingdom’s destruction as the removal of a slave-trading regime and argues that Yas deserves recognition rather than punishment 88.
  • When Pokato demands Yas’s dismissal and arrest, Garp confronts the conservative officers and calls Yas the Marines’ only effective weapon against Rocks 89.

God Valley

  • Before Yas sails, Garp warns him that Rocks is a genuine monster and that God Valley may become a world-shaking battlefield. He then arranges a voyage to seek Whitebeard 171.
  • Upon arriving at God Valley, he clashes with Roger while Marine forces land, rescue civilians and slaves, and fight the Rocks Pirates. Yas rejects his offer to team up 180.
  • Garp attempts to stop the fighting from destroying everyone on the island. He and Sengoku subsequently hold Rocks back, suffering under his attacks 189 190 191.
  • After Yas kills Rocks, Garp angrily confronts him for apparently gambling with his life 197.
  • Trapped inside the expanding darkness, Garp cooperates with Roger despite Yas’s refusal to join them. Their attacks expose an opening that Yas uses to reach and destroy its hidden core 199.

Opposition to Yas’s Unchecked Authority

  • Following treatment, Garp confronts Kong over Yas’s promotion to Admiral, calling him a dangerous, uncontrollable threat. Kong explains that Yas seized the position as a tool rather than receiving it as a reward 205.
  • Learning that Yas now possesses authority beyond an ordinary Admiral leaves Garp openly helpless 206.
  • He later joins Sengoku and Sakazuki in objecting to Yas’s attack on Impel Down, but Yas ignores them 213.

Relationships

  • Yas — Assessment opponent, trainee, and recurring combat rival. Garp becomes an influential early supporter, but their relationship deteriorates as Yas’s power and disregard for others exceed what he can accept 8 21 89 205.
  • Sengoku — Longtime friend and fellow Marine leader. Their frequent arguments pit Garp’s permissive approach against Sengoku’s concern for discipline, procedure, and institutional control 20 50 88.
  • Zephyr — Old friend and fellow instructor. Garp helps test Yas during Zephyr’s lessons, warns him about dangerous attacks, and tries to console him when Yas’s growth overwhelms his confidence 21 22 23.
  • Kong — Fleet Admiral and superior. Garp treats him irreverently but participates in his strategic meetings and challenges decisions concerning Yas 28 81 205.
  • Gol D. Roger — Longstanding pirate adversary and occasional battlefield partner. They clash at God Valley, then cooperate against the darkness 3 180 199.
  • Rocks D. Zebek — Feared enemy whose strength Garp knows firsthand. Garp repeatedly warns Yas about him and fights him alongside Sengoku 29 171 190.
  • Pokato — Fellow Vice Admiral and ideological opponent over Yas. Garp acknowledges him as a good man but condemns his procedural approach to justice as too weak 89.
