Background / History
Recruitment and System Awakening
Yas arrives in the Rocks era as an ordinary Marine recruit, aware that inexperienced soldiers are easily killed by powerful pirates. Instructor Moore singles him out during training and attacks him with an Armament Haki-coated Shave kick. The Strongest Template System awakens in response, and lightning armor stops the attack while shocking Moore away 1.
Zephyr recognizes his potential after personally testing his defense. Yas truthfully denies having a Devil Fruit power but conceals the system by describing Lightning Release Armor as an inborn constitution. Zephyr then arranges for Garp to conduct his final assessment 3.
First Command and Headquarters Recognition
Combat with Garp accelerates Yas’s template fusion and establishes his reputation at Marineford. After becoming a major, he takes more than twenty recruits, Teppei, and Lieutenant Bullet aboard a Vanguard-class gunboat to hunt the Butcher Pirates. He destroys their ship with Three-Finger Nukite 6 9 10 16.
Further training with Garp and Zephyr produces rapid Haki breakthroughs. His eventual success against Garp earns him promotion to colonel, a five-hundred-man mobile fleet, and the flagship Leviathan. Kong sends this force against Rocks’s subordinate crews carrying captives toward Hachinosu 20 22 23 27 28 30.
Independent Operations and G-5
Yas establishes absolute authority over his new fleet, using Black Lightning to crush resistance to his command. He later rejects a safer assignment and names Captain John, Shiki, and Rocks as targets capable of furthering his growth. Kong authorizes independent operations but warns that Marine support does not permit unlimited ambition 31 50.
After receiving command of G-5, Yas turns the branch into a training and research center. Bullet oversees brutal physical conditioning, Yas teaches Chakra to his five hundred veterans, and the Research Department develops the T1 Tyrannosaurus Serum. His subsequent battle with Zephyr exposes the vulnerability of his internal organs and the limits of his Haki 60 64 66 67 71.
Divine Punishment and Fleet Expansion
Yas withdraws to the Tomb of the Giant God to overcome the instability of combining Conqueror’s Haki and Black Lightning. He tempers his will, repeatedly exposes his body to destructive power, and successfully creates Divine Punishment. Garp interrupts his testing with urgent news of Rocks’s attack on God Valley 72 73 74.
The Five Elders instead send him to the Sparta Kingdom, an assignment Kong condemns as a betrayal of Marine justice. Following his Vice Admiral commissioning, Yas defeats Charlotte Linlin, obtains God Valley’s coordinates from Katakuri, and rejects Sengoku’s rendezvous order in favor of attacking the enemy’s rear at Bakira Island 80 90 100.
On Bakira Island, he claims a treasury worth at least five hundred billion Beli, dividing it between fleet funding and rewards for his soldiers. He later offers to finance fifty thousand young Marines and subjects tens of thousands of recruits to destructive lightning baptism to create Divine Punishment’s first Lightning Legion 108 121 130.
Homecoming and Pirate Campaigns
After becoming an Admiral Candidate, Yas chooses to return to the East Blue. His reunion with his parents in Foosha Village reveals an unusually gentle side; learning of pirate threats and corrupt Marine involvement prompts him to promise that he will leave no pirates in the sea 142 143 144.
His campaign brings him into ideological conflict with Roger, whose vision of freedom he condemns as an excuse for pirate-inflicted suffering. Yas kills Captain John, keeps his treasure, and defeats Kaido and Big Mom. He then trades the Time-Time Fruit and Captain John’s Treasure Core to the Five Elders for the First Kitetsu, intended for a swordsman subordinate 147 160 170.
God Valley and Admiral Appointment
Ordered to intervene in the Celestial Dragons’ Native Hunting tournament, Yas openly expresses disgust at protecting people who hunt unarmed civilians. Classified instructions reveal that the Celestial Dragons are expendable bait in a trap intended to assess and potentially annihilate Rocks 170 171 172.
At God Valley, Yas neutralizes Shiki and Whitebeard’s combined attack, defeats Roger’s intervention, and turns on Rocks. A finger through Rocks’s heart fails to finish him, leading to a battle against his transformed state. Yas activates Battle Form and ultimately kills him 185 189 190 192 193 195 197.
Yas subsequently follows a passage opened by Garp and Roger to strike a darkness-devouring law singularity. In recognition of his God Valley achievements—and to legitimize the sweeping authority he demands—the Five Elders appoint him Admiral under the code name Azure Thunder 199 205.
Final Cleansing
In the finale, Yas rejects objections from Marine leaders and declares his own will the new justice. Using Azure Thunder Flash, he leaves G-1 and purifies Impel Down’s inmates, including Red the Aloof and Devil’s Descendant. The resulting experience triggers further system upgrades 213.
Appearance
- Ordinary appearance: A youthful, handsome man with short black hair and ice-blue eyes 28 85 90 171.
- Clothing: Frequently wears a white Marine “Justice” coat 14 90 148.
- Raijin Armor: Blue lightning envelops his body; his hair stands on end and turns azure while lightning shines from his eyes 5.
- Lightning Release Armament: Blue-and-black heavy armor with a metallic sheen 23 24.
- Black Lightning Demon Armor: Menacing black armor bearing deep-purple lightning runes 56 65.
- Divine Punishment armor: Translucent black-and-red armor covered in barbs and destructive runes; his hair turns pure white 85.
- Battle Form: Simplified azure armor emphasizing fierce arm guards and leg guards 193.
Personality
Yas is intensely combative, arrogant, and driven by the pursuit of stronger opponents. He repeatedly chooses direct collisions over retreat, treating dangerous battles as opportunities for evolution. Weak enemies bore him; opponents capable of injuring him rekindle his excitement 6 24 50 65 98.
As a commander, he demands unquestioning obedience rather than consultation. His fleet becomes personally loyal through overwhelming displays of strength, promises of wealth, and opportunities for dangerous physical evolution. Pokato recognizes that its allegiance has shifted from Marine procedure to Yas himself 31 108 121.
His justice is explicitly self-defined. Although Marines celebrate him as a symbol of Absolute Justice, he tells Roger that he protects himself and intends eventually to purge the World Government and Celestial Dragons. His disgust toward civilian hunting coexists with a willingness at God Valley to disregard Garp’s warning that his attacks will kill civilians, slaves, and Marines 147 170 171 189.
His parents evoke a rare tenderness absent from most of his public behavior. The prospect of returning home softens his expression, and he shares a family meal with them after nearly ten years away 143 144.
Abilities & Skills
Strongest Template System
The system binds Yas to Third Raikage A and grants abilities through template fusion and achievements 1 2 28.
- Fusion increases through intense training, absorbed lightning energy, and victories over powerful opponents 2.
- Sustaining Garp’s attacks directly raises fusion and stimulates bodily adaptation 6.
- Can issue temporary missions, including an annihilation mission triggered by a threat to Yas and his crew 11.
- His lightning powers are not Devil Fruit abilities; Seastone bullets fail to disable his armor 3 12.
Lightning Release Armor
Lightning Release Chakra Mode enhances defense, attack power, speed, and neural reflexes 2 5.
- Raijin Armor: Stops Moore’s kick and withstands Garp’s initial uncoated punch 1 5.
- Lightning Release Armament: Merges chakra with Armament Haki for greater speed and protection 22 23.
- Black Lightning Demon Armor: Provides stronger protection and can repair cracks when powered up 56 65.
- Limits: Extended punishment consumes stamina. Whitebeard’s strike causes serious injury, while Zephyr’s Internal Destruction bypasses the armor and damages his organs 6 58 67.
Hell Stab: Nukite
Nukite concentrates power at Yas’s fingertips to produce piercing attacks. The template’s stated principle is that fewer fingers yield greater power 2.
- Four-Finger Nukite: His first unlocked core spear-hand skill, used against Garp 6 7.
- Three-Finger Nukite: Can project a lightning spear through a pirate ship; its Haki-infused form breaks through Galaxy Meteorite 16 26 27.
- Two-Finger Nukite: Used against Smoker and later to counter Rayleigh’s Reincarnation domain 36 37 113.
- One-Finger Nukite: Erases Silver Axe with a concentrated Black Lightning attack 68.
Haki
Yas develops all three documented forms of Haki and integrates them into his lightning techniques 20 23 43 73.
- Armament Haki: Strikes Smoker through his Logia form and supports Internal Destruction 27 36.
- Mantra Haki: Combines Observation Haki and Chakra Sensing, detecting movements and emotions within five hundred meters 23.
- Future Sight: Allows him to anticipate Garp’s attacks approximately one second ahead 25 27.
- Conqueror’s Haki: Progresses from intimidation to a densely tempered will capable of fusing with Black Lightning 43 71 73.
Black Lightning
Black Lightning supplies destructive attacks, armor, and specialized techniques 28 31 43.
- Structural erasure: Combines compressed Black Lightning with Internal Destruction to trigger a destructive chain reaction within matter 31.
- God’s Cage: Releases extremely fine black arcs outward from his body 37.
- Planetary Devastation: Modified: Generates immense gravitational force against a monstrous flagship 46.
- Limits: An early erasure demonstration consumes nearly five percent of his available power. His initial control is imperfect, and fusion experiments with Conqueror’s Haki cause nearly fatal backlash 31 34 72.
Divine Punishment and Azure Thunder Law
Divine Punishment fuses Conqueror’s Haki’s domination with Black Lightning’s destructive essence 73 74.
- Thunder Spear: A Divine Armament formed with his transformed will as its framework and Black Lightning essence as its substance 75.
- Divine Punishment: Lightning Release Armor: Applies the fused power as full-body armor 85.
- Azure Thunder Purification: Repairs shattered space and disintegrates Shiki’s floating mountains 185.
- Soul-energy purification: Removes memories, hatred, and other impurities from resentment before absorbing the remaining soul energy 175.
- Law-based piercing: Concentrates piercing and purification laws into a fingertip attack against a law singularity 199.
Speed and Raikage Style Taijutsu
Yas initially achieves extraordinary movement through chakra-enhanced reflexes and physical acceleration rather than Shave 5 7.
- Lightning Body Flicker: Uses rapid movement to evade and outmaneuver opponents 45.
- Raikage Style Taijutsu: Chains elbows, knees, knife-hand chops, kicks, and punches at overwhelming speed 195.
- Azure Thunder Flash: Explicitly transcends the physical-law framework of his earlier movement, making him impossible for the opposing wills in the finale to track 207 213.
Domain and Late-System Skills
- One-kilometer domain: Nullifies abilities, reduces affected enemies’ attributes by thirty percent, continuously weakens vitality and willpower, and grants control over space and energy within its bounds 207.
- God’s Pure Land: Receives an upgrade after the purification of Impel Down; the supplied passage does not specify the upgraded effects 213.
- Spear of Divine Punishment: Becomes overcharged during the same event, resetting its cooldown to zero 213.
Training and Force Development
Yas extends his power-building methods to his subordinates 60 121 130.
- Teaches Chakra as the combination of physical and spiritual energy, enabling basic elemental control 60.
- Directs research into the T1 Tyrannosaurus Serum, which temporarily improves strength, speed, and recovery 60.
- Uses black-and-red lightning baptism to strengthen Sakazuki and Borsalino 130.
- Draws energy from the Leviathan to subject tens of thousands of recruits to the Lightning Legion’s baptism 130.
