"Fengmen Village?" Wang Feng sucked in a sharp breath. Even before the apocalypse, Fengmen Village had been a name that sent chills down people's spines. God only knew how terrifying it was after the apocalypse. Wasn't taking the convoy there sheer madness?
His voice grew serious. "Xiao Wu, is that true?"
To his surprise, Xiao Wu burst out laughing. "Hahaha, just kidding, just kidding! Livening things up a little. Look at you all, so lifeless. Even in the apocalypse, you've got to cheer up. After all, every day you live is another day."
Wang Feng's voice was full of resignation as he listened to Xiao Wu's explanation. "Cut back on jokes like that."
Lin Qi was speechless too. That settled it: Xiao Wu was purely in it for the fun. Still, he really did have a good attitude.
Xiao Wu's voice continued over the radio. "All right, no more jokes. I went to Liu Family Village on business before the apocalypse. I know where they keep the most food. You guys can make a big haul there. Brother Lin, interested in joining us?"
Lin Qi hadn't expected to be invited too. After a brief hesitation, he replied, "Sure."
He knew nothing about Liu Family Village and would be going in blind. He might as well join Wang Feng's team for a quick raid and get it over with.
"Great, just follow my car when we get there." Xiao Wu didn't reveal their destination. Clearly, he had his own little considerations.
Xiao Wu's mind jumped all over the place. One moment he was talking about Liu Family Village, and the next he had veered onto something else. "Brother Feng, I've taken a liking to a girl among the survivors. Can I bring him into our team?"
Wang Feng was quite accommodating. "You can, but you'll have to provide for her yourself."
"Okie-dokie." Xiao Wu cheerfully agreed. Lin Qi watched him dart out of the sedan ahead and walk back toward the survivors on foot.
Without Xiao Wu's chatter, things really were a little less entertaining.
Lin Qi actually envied Xiao Wu's carefree nature a little.
Time passed as the survivors moved at a snail's pace. At around one in the afternoon, the lead SUV finally pulled over, and the loudspeaker on the heavy truck began to blare. "We only have three hours to gather supplies. Don't waste time, everyone. The convoy will leave on schedule!"
Liu Yan finished speaking.
Niu Wudi took the lead in his SUV, charging onto the dirt road beside the highway with another small truck in tow.
Several survivor vehicles behind them followed close behind.
Wang Feng's two cars were ahead, with Lin Qi's SUV bringing up the rear.
At the entrance to the village, a banner fluttered in the wind-[Welcome to Liu Family Village!]
The road to Liu Family Village was a dirt track that wasn't particularly wide, with room for no more than two vehicles to pass at a time.
What had once been endless fields of crops on either side of the road had now been entirely replaced by weeds.
Perhaps to keep vehicles from crushing the crops, a ditch had been dug between the dirt road and the fields, one that vehicles had absolutely no way of crossing.
With Niu Wudi's SUV in the lead, the survivors continued straight ahead. After about a kilometer, scattered self-built houses finally began to appear.
Some survivors broke away from the group, trying to search the scattered houses for supplies.
Niu Wudi's SUV, however, seemed to have a clear destination, speeding deeper into the village without slowing at all.
"Strange. Looks like Niu Wudi's heading to the same place we are." Xiao Wu's surprised voice came over the radio.
Watching the scenery on both sides race past the windows, he became even more certain. "Guys, looks like Niu Wudi really is heading to the same place as us-the school at the far end of the village..."
"A school? What supplies would a school have?" someone couldn't help asking.
Xiao Wu patiently explained, "See, this is what you don't know. Liu Family Village is an impoverished village where all the children have been left behind by their parents. But the village school has a good principal. To make sure every student has food to eat, the principal livestreams practically every waking hour. A lot of kindhearted people watching the streams donate supplies to the school."
"And the supplies donated online are all suitable for long-term storage. That's why I said the school has the most supplies!"
"You have no idea. When I went to talk business with the principal that time, the students' heartfelt love for him really moved me..."
"I really hope the principal survived the apocalypse."
Xiao Wu poured out his feelings without pause. The other members listened quietly, none of them interrupting him.
Lin Qi also listened quietly to Xiao Wu.
A man who could help children left behind by their parents without asking anything in return truly deserved admiration.
As Xiao Wu spoke, the convoy finally arrived at a vast clearing.
Towering mountains and dense forests stretched as far as the eye could see around the clearing. At its very center stood an opera stage. It looked like an old relic that had stood there for ages, its stone walls covered in the marks of time.
Across from the stage stood their destination, the village's only school!
The school gates weren't wide enough for vehicles to enter.
Niu Wudi and his men parked at the entrance, and he led the way into the school.
The other survivors followed close behind.
"Let's go, Brother Lin."
Wang Feng called over the radio and got out of the sedan, his gaze settling on the SUV.
Not many survivor vehicles had come to the school this time, but Wang Feng still left one person behind to guard the vehicles.
With one of Wang Feng's people there, Lin Qi didn't have to worry about anything happening to his vehicle.
As the survivors stepped inside, the deathly silent school gained a little life.
Niu Wudi had a clear destination, leading his men straight to the cafeteria.
To Lin Qi's surprise, the girl in the green dress was among them. This was his first time seeing her join a supply search.
"Come on. The school has plenty of supplies. No need to worry about Niu Wudi taking everything." Xiao Wu urged them on and strode toward the cafeteria as well.
With a superhuman scouting ahead, there was no reason not to take advantage.
Lin Qi followed close behind the others, glancing from time to time at the opera stage outside the school gates.
Sunlight spilled across the stage. Though there was clearly nothing on it, he kept feeling as if needles were pricking his back, as though something behind the stage was watching their group.
"Must be my imagination."
Lin Qi's brows knitted tightly.
The blazing sun was overhead now, at midday. Even if something supernatural lurked in the stage, it couldn't come out and hurt anyone. As long as he didn't provoke it, what trouble could there be?
He hurried after the others. Only when the stage disappeared from view did that prickling sensation gradually fade.
The school was quiet, as quiet as if it had been abandoned for a long time.
They had made plenty of noise entering the school, yet by the time they reached the cafeteria, they hadn't drawn a single living person out or seen a single corpse.
It was as though all the school's teachers and students had vanished into thin air.
The survivors had no interest in investigating anything strange. All they cared about was food.
The moment they stepped into the cafeteria, none of them could look away!
Boxes upon boxes of food were piled in the sunlight inside the cafeteria, as magnificent as little mountains!
Before the apocalypse, perhaps all it would have taken to buy them was some money.
Now, even a fortune couldn't buy them!
Lin Qi stared at the scene before him, then at Niu Wudi, who likewise hadn't moved. His brows furrowed. "Don't you think everything has gone a little too smoothly..."
