Background / History

Repair shop and escape from Changcheng

Yang Defa rose from a penniless young man in the countryside to owning an auto repair shop. That experience taught him the value of finding a benefactor—an idea that later influenced his decision to follow Su Chen 5.

Their first meeting was a business transaction: Su Chen paid him to secure solar panels to a refrigerated truck and supply batteries and empty fuel cans. The truck’s company markings and its cargo of freshly dismantled furniture made Yang Defa suspect wrongdoing, but he completed the sale. Before leaving, Su Chen warned him to flee the city if anything unusual happened that night 2.

After answering Huang Wei’s questions about the customer, Yang Defa saw the enormous red moon and persuaded Wang Xiumei to leave for his parents’ village. Packing delayed their departure, and red fog caught up with them outside Changcheng. When an animated human skin tried to enter their truck, he accelerated until they reached sunlight and it disappeared 3 4.

Banyan Tree Village

At a highway blockage, Yang Defa invited Su Chen and Su Xi to his family home for a meal, also offering to finish installing the solar panels. He hoped to learn more about the disaster from the man who had anticipated it 4 5.

Su Chen’s warning that the village would become dangerous in twelve hours strengthened Yang Defa’s belief that he possessed an unusual ability. Yang Defa repeatedly urged his parents to leave, then asked how to protect them when they refused. His father offered Su Chen his pig-slaughtering knife and knife technique in exchange for a promise to save Yang Defa and Wang Xiumei once each 6 10.

Yang Defa sided with Su Chen when the police arrived and became still more determined to accompany him after the walking corpse incident. He installed the truck’s solar panels overnight, although the battery bank remained unfinished the next morning. He then left in the supply truck while his parents stayed behind 7 10 11.

Formation of the Hope Convoy

Warned that Tree People might be hiding among the travelers, Yang Defa arranged for people in the vehicles to watch for suspicious behavior. Their reports helped him identify Eighth Master as abnormal. During the subsequent confrontation, he supported Su Chen and Huang Wei with warding materials, an axe, and fuel 11 14 15.

He followed Su Chen past an unmapped town rather than stopping; discovering that the town was fake reinforced his trust. When Su Chen formally organized the survivors as the Hope Convoy, Yang Defa immediately supported his leadership and accepted responsibility for pooled supplies and logistics 16 17 18.

Snowfield, Hot Spring Village, and raider pursuit

Yang Defa helped return an exhausted Su Chen to the refrigerated truck after the search in Xintang Town. In the Snow Demon’s hunting ground, Su Chen’s warning later saved him from a Snow Demon Servant’s surprise attack 22 25.

Throughout the snowfield escape, he organized protective gear, fires, and supply security. He also helped recover usable machinery at a coal mine and carried out Su Chen’s instructions to keep the convoy moving through the blizzard 25 26 27 29.

At the Golden Spring Hotel, Yang Defa initially saw little threat in the elderly hostess and her grandson. Once Su Chen raised suspicions, however, he stopped people from eating their food despite Fan Hui’s objections. He later restrained the pair and assisted in destroying the Human-Skin Lantern 32 33 34 38.

During the Predator Convoy’s pursuit, Yang Defa used his truck to obstruct the attackers. After the battle, he approached Su Chen as the survivors regrouped and received further cleanup orders 44 50.

Personality

Yang Defa is observant, pragmatic, and careful about other people’s secrets. Although he wanted to understand Su Chen’s foreknowledge, he deliberately asked about future dangers rather than demanding its source. He also copied sensible precautions, putting away the liquor when Su Chen declined to drink 6.

His loyalty develops from recognizing Su Chen’s competence, but he contributes practical work rather than merely seeking protection. He also recognizes his own limitations and asks directly how he can help 10 18 33.

He is protective of his family. He repeatedly pleaded with his parents to evacuate, wanted his father to retain the anomalous knife for self-defense, and kept Wang Xiumei inside the truck when the snowfield was dangerous 6 10 26.
