Arc 2The Hope Fleet and the Pufferfish

Qin Mao joined the Hope Fleet, repaired the Yaximu, and gained control of Just Verdict while contending with Su Miaomiao and the dangers drawn to his ship. After exposing Fu Qingshi and helping kill the Chang-Driving Pufferfish, Qin Mao uncovered clues about the apocalypse’s earlier beginnings and received a note from Yang Fan that left him alarmed.

  • Qin Mao agreed to repair the Yaximu for supplies, then fixed its flooded hull in under a minute and joined the Hope Fleet.
  • Su Miaomiao used Mind Control on Qin Mao, but he resisted her and pursued disputes across the fleet to complete Just Verdict’s ownership ritual.
  • Qin Mao learned about the fleet’s rules and his companions’ Sequences, while his Free Person taboo weakened him and the Eerie Coconut grew a second coconut.
  • The fleet’s island expedition ended in a Bloodfang Warthog attack, and a Chang-Driving Pufferfish later followed the ships and caused more deaths.
  • Qin Mao exposed Zhang Yu as the dead scientist Fu Qingshi, whose mental abilities had hidden corpse impostors among the survivors.
  • Qin Mao and the others killed the Chang-Driving Pufferfish, agreed on rules for dividing its loot, and learned that Red Scarf had pushed Xuanxuan overboard.
  • Su Miaomiao continued feeding the Eerie Coconut, while the fleet’s fishing catches dwindled and Qin Mao concealed his suspicion that his ship was attracting creatures.
  • Qin Mao and Yang Fan connected old skeletons and remains to signs that people had sailed into danger before the apocalypse fully descended, and Qin Mao received a chilling note from Yang Fan.
Chapters 26–50 Vol. 1 Read

Ch. 26A request for ship repairs

Qin Mao introduced himself as a Sequence 1 Apocalypse Shipwright and negotiated with Yang Fan, Ye Xuanyin, and Yan Qi over the costs of repairing ships and managing his vessel’s need to kill something each day. He joined Yan Qi to inspect the Yaximu’s leak, where they found its Shipwright, Xu Ran, unable to stop seawater from entering a cabin.

  • Qin Mao met Yang Fan, Ye Xuanyin, and Yan Qi, then heard how they had survived the apocalypse and formed the Hope Fleet.
  • Qin Mao agreed to repair ships in exchange for materials and supplies, warning that the work consumed transcendent power and shortened his lifespan.
  • Qin Mao told the group that his ship required him to kill something every day, and Yang Fan agreed to save their live fish for him.
  • Qin Mao asked Yan Qi about his habit of speaking Nang Language, and Yan Qi explained that he had picked it up to amuse a girl he liked.
  • Yan Qi led Qin Mao to the Yaximu’s leaking cabin, where Xu Ran stood unable to stop the seawater despite repeated repairs.

Ch. 27He couldn't repair ships at all

Qin Mao inspected the badly damaged Yaximu while Xu Ran and Zhao Yuechuan insisted it could not be repaired. Su Miaomiao exposed his supposed past as a fraud and turned the crew against him, but Qin Mao struck her and challenged Zhao Yuechuan to wager his life on whether Qin Mao could fix the ship.

  • Xu Ran and Zhao Yuechuan told Yan Qi that the Yaximu was beyond repair and that the crew should abandon it.
  • Yan Qi asked Qin Mao to inspect the damage, but Su Miaomiao interrupted and claimed Qin Mao had no ship-repair skills and had once been imprisoned for telecom fraud.
  • Su Miaomiao told the crew that she and Qin Mao had dated for seven or eight years, prompting many survivors to distrust and condemn him.
  • Yang Fan and Ye Xuanyin watched without defending Qin Mao as the crew questioned his worth.
  • Qin Mao slapped Su Miaomiao, then asked Zhao Yuechuan whether he could throw him into the sea if Qin Mao repaired the ship.

Ch. 28A shipwright would not be insulted

Qin Mao bet Zhao Yuechuan that he could repair the damaged [Yaximu] in ten minutes, while the fleet’s captains mistakenly feared he planned to blow up the ship. Qin Mao used 700 Kill Points to repair the hull in under a minute, leaving the outcome of the bet and the fleet’s reaction still to come.

  • Qin Mao wagered that he could make the [Yaximu] seaworthy in ten minutes, and Zhao Yuechuan accepted after Su Miaomiao urged him to call Qin Mao’s bluff.
  • Qin Mao told everyone to leave the cabin, and Yang Fan led the others out while Zhao Yuechuan promised to return after a smoke.
  • Yang Fan realized Qin Mao had survived an exploding pirate ship and suspected he planned to blow up the [Yaximu], so the captains transferred the survivors to the [Rose] and the [Hope] and moved the ships away.
  • Qin Mao checked the repair cost and spent 700 Kill Points to fix the [Yaximu]’s hull.
  • The ship’s damaged section rapidly transformed, and Qin Mao completed the repair in less than a minute.

Ch. 29I, Zhao Yuechuan, concede!

Qin Mao finished repairing the Yaximu, astonishing the Hope Fleet and establishing himself as its Shipwright. After making Zhao Yuechuan serve as bait and accept supplies in place of the remaining time, Qin Mao went with Yan Qi to inspect the fleet’s storerooms for payment.

  • Qin Mao completed the ship repairs, and the returning survivors were shocked to find the damaged and flooded sections restored.
  • Zhao Yuechuan conceded Qin Mao’s superior shipwright skills, and Yang Fan welcomed Qin Mao into the Hope Fleet as a companion.
  • Qin Mao had Zhao Yuechuan serve as live bait, then accepted supplies from him in exchange for ending the remaining time.
  • Yan Qi brought Qin Mao to the fleet’s storerooms to let him choose payment for repairing the Yaximu.

Ch. 30Junk? It's treasure!

Qin Mao bargained with Yan Qi for food and supplies from the Yaximu fleet in exchange for helping repair the ship. He used most of his Kill Points to repair and upgrade practical gear, leaving himself well stocked with water, cooking equipment, and other useful items.

  • Qin Mao inspected the Yaximu fleet's food stores and learned that the supplies were privately owned, while everyone shared the cost of repairing the ship.
  • Yan Qi showed Qin Mao a storeroom of miscellaneous belongings, and Qin Mao selected toiletries, household items, and several broken objects he planned to fix.
  • Qin Mao returned to the food store and demanded a large assortment of rice, meat, condiments, water, and dried noodles, then haggled with Yan Qi until they agreed on smaller quantities.
  • Yan Qi summoned a skeleton to carry the supplies onto the Eerie Coconut, then complained about Qin Mao to Yang Fan and Ye Xuanyin.
  • Qin Mao split the food between two cabins and used Kill Points to repair or upgrade desalination equipment, a flashlight, a blanket, a cooker, and a wok.

Ch. 31Did Being Extraordinary Make You So Special?

Qin Mao tried to fulfill [Just Verdict]'s ownership ritual, but Su Miaomiao arrived and revealed she had long been extraordinary. She used [Mind Control] to make him disclose the Eerie Coconut's nature and his recent experiences, then pressed him to explain how he escaped the Eight-Eyed Ice Weird Spider.

  • Qin Mao considered how to complete [Just Verdict]'s three fair trials, but found no disputes aboard the harmonious [Yaximu].
  • Su Miaomiao approached Qin Mao, tried to appeal to their past friendship, and boarded the Eerie Coconut despite his insults and threats.
  • Su Miaomiao revealed she had been extraordinary for a long time and used [Mind Control] to make Qin Mao obey her.
  • Qin Mao told Su Miaomiao that the Eerie Coconut was an Anomalous Object and explained its blood-watering ownership cost.
  • Su Miaomiao made Qin Mao recount his recent experiences, then asked how he had escaped the Eight-Eyed Ice Weird Spider.

Ch. 32Turning the Tables

Qin Mao resisted Su Miaomiao’s mental control, uncovered her powers, and returned to searching for a situation that would make Just Verdict recognize him as its master. He found a dispute aboard the Yaximu and approached the children involved, while the chapter’s author’s note said the next three chapters could be skipped.

  • Qin Mao pretended to answer Su Miaomiao’s questions while resisting her mental control, then realized she had been manipulating him and others for a long time.
  • Qin Mao left the Eerie Coconut, drank fresh water, and searched the Rose and Hope for a matter to judge, but found nothing.
  • Qin Mao tried to trigger Just Verdict by staging a fight between two Mutant Fish and pronouncing absurd sentences, but the weapon did not respond.
  • Two children on the Yaximu argued over a game, and their chase knocked over a survivor’s fishing bucket and an old woman.
  • Qin Mao leaped from the Eerie Coconut onto the Yaximu and walked toward the children.

Ch. 33Sharing spicy strips

Qin Mao provoked a dispute with two children and their parents, then forced the family to acknowledge that his ruling was fair, advancing [Just Verdict]'s ownership ritual by one-third. After Yang Fan made the family apologize and announced a rule to control noisy children, Qin Mao spotted something that delighted him and headed toward it.

  • Qin Mao took the children's spicy strips after declaring that both had lost, and eating them advanced [Just Verdict]'s ownership ritual.
  • When the children and their parents insulted him, Qin Mao slapped all four of them, and a crowd gathered as the parents accused him of bullying them.
  • Yang Fan arrived, ordered the family to apologize to Qin Mao, and told them to leave the fleet if they refused.
  • Qin Mao made the children confirm that his ruling was fair, completing another third of [Just Verdict]'s ownership ritual.
  • Yang Fan announced a rule requiring parents to control their children aboard the fleet, and Qin Mao later spotted something and headed toward it.

Ch. 34Dividing the Bread

Aboard the Hope, Qin Mao intervened in a couple’s argument over naan and used his [Just Verdict] ability to take the bread for himself. With the ritual’s progress surging, he returned to the Eerie Coconut pleased and looked for another dispute, but the fleet had gone silent to avoid his attention.

  • A couple on the Hope argued over whether their naan had been divided fairly, and Qin Mao offered to settle the dispute.
  • Qin Mao repeatedly redistributed the bread until only two tiny bites remained, then claimed the scraps and both bites as his fees.
  • When Qin Mao demanded to know whether his judgment was fair, the frightened couple agreed, advancing the master-binding ritual for [Just Verdict].
  • Qin Mao returned to the Eerie Coconut, ate and drank, then searched the [Hope], [Rose], and [Yaximu] for another dispute to judge.
  • Survivors across the fleet stayed quiet or concealed their disagreements because they feared Qin Mao would take advantage of them.

Ch. 35The Bonding Ritual Was Complete

Qin Mao tricked the children into accepting seawater as a fair prize, completing [Just Verdict]’s bonding ritual and claiming the gun. He left for a meeting aboard the [Hope], while a hidden figure later boarded the Eerie Coconut and cut open his wrist.

  • Qin Mao offered Red Scarf and Black Shirt a cup of water as the prize in a rock-paper-scissors game, and Red Scarf won after his father distracted him.
  • Qin Mao gave the children seawater, got both children to call his judgment fair, and completed [Just Verdict]’s bonding ritual.
  • Red Scarf’s parents took the cup from him and discovered it contained seawater, but they feared Qin Mao too much to protest.
  • Qin Mao headed to the [Hope] to attend the meeting Yang Fan had requested, while nearby survivors decided to avoid him.
  • A figure secretly boarded the Eerie Coconut, slashed his wrist, and resolved to endure fifteen days of pain to live better.

Ch. 36Wound Devourer

Qin Mao learned the Hope Fleet’s survival laws and its members’ Sequence abilities, then watched Ye Xuanyin heal his shoulder by transferring the wound onto paper and eating it. The chapter left Qin Mao stunned by the uncanny power of the fleet’s healer.

  • Yang Fan explained the Hope Fleet’s iron laws and survival rules to Qin Mao.
  • Qin Mao questioned the rule requiring absolute trust in the captain, and Yang Fan explained that his Navigator Sequence helped the fleet avoid disasters and find islands.
  • Yan Qi, Qin Mao, and Ye Xuanyin introduced their Sequences and abilities.
  • Ye Xuanyin drew Qin Mao’s shoulder wound onto a page and transferred it off his body.
  • Ye Xuanyin folded the wound-marked page, ate it, and revealed her ability as Wound Devourer.

Ch. 37Ten-Thousand-Li Divine Radiance

After joining Yang Fan’s fleet, Qin Mao named his ship [Ten-Thousand-Li Divine Radiance], but his [Free Person] taboo left him weak after he ate his fill. He discovered that the Eerie Coconut had fed itself blood and glimpsed Su Miaomiao aboard the [Yaximu], then made a lavish meal that weakened him even further.

  • Qin Mao thanked Ye Xuanyin for healing his arm and declined Yang Fan’s offer of help with his sails.
  • Qin Mao named his ship [Ten-Thousand-Li Divine Radiance], and Yang Fan, Ye Xuanyin, and Yan Qi reluctantly accepted the name.
  • Qin Mao realized that eating his fill had triggered his [Free Person] taboo, causing persistent weakness and threatening his abilities.
  • Qin Mao found that the Eerie Coconut had drunk its fill of blood and grown a second, egg-sized coconut, then glimpsed Su Miaomiao aboard the [Yaximu] during his staged blood offering.
  • Qin Mao cooked instant noodles with luncheon meat and ate them using a broken fruit knife, only to find himself even weaker afterward.

Ch. 38Violating a Sequence taboo

Qin Mao recovered from the weakness caused by violating his Sequence taboo and learned that his former girlfriend might be dangerous. After a nighttime commotion involving the Eerie Coconut, the fleet resumed its voyage toward an island.

  • Qin Mao met Zhong Baoguo, who warned him that his former girlfriend had been involved with Zhou Hao and might have plotted against him.
  • Zhong Baoguo said the woman secretly left a plastic bottle on a mast each day and drank its water at sunrise, then revealed that he was ninety-seven years old.
  • A woman secretly fed blood to the Thousand-Faced Eerie Coconut, whose laughter frightened the fleet and made Qin Mao explain that no unfamiliar eerie was present.
  • Qin Mao recovered his Transcendent Power overnight and saw five silver roses appear on [Just Verdict], bringing its ammunition capacity to seven bullets.
  • Yang Fan led the fleet toward an island to gather supplies, unaware of the danger awaiting them.

Ch. 39Bloodfang Warthog

Qin Mao’s fleet reached a small island where survivors gathered bluegrass roots, but two people mysteriously walked into the sea before a pair of eerie creatures attacked. Qin Mao escaped to the Eerie Coconut, then dismissed [Just Verdict] as a useless toy gun, leaving the others still fleeing the Bloodfang Warthogs.

  • Qin Mao landed with the survivors and dug up bluegrass roots for food.
  • Wang Laosan walked into the sea and disappeared, and the survivors discovered that Zhao Cuihua was missing as well.
  • A Bloodfang Warthog emerged from the island’s center, and Yang Fan ordered everyone to retreat to the ships.
  • The Bloodfang Warthog crushed a fleeing survivor as Qin Mao raced back to the Eerie Coconut.
  • Qin Mao drew [Just Verdict] but decided it was a toy gun useless against eerie creatures and put it away.

Ch. 40Companions aboard the Eerie Coconut

The fleet escaped the Bloodfang Warthog, but Yang Fan feared an eerie creature might still be following them. After night fell, a splash and cries for help suggested someone had gone into the sea again.

  • Yan Qi and Yang Fan discovered that the Bloodfang Warthog’s eyes were vulnerable, but its thick hide kept the skeletons from harming it.
  • The fleet escaped as Yan Qi used a skeleton rib to knock the warthog’s leap short, sending it into the sea.
  • Qin Mao reunited with his old schoolmate Zhang Yu and brought him aboard the Ten-Thousand-Li Divine Radiance.
  • Yang Fan warned the fleet that an eerie creature might be following them and ordered everyone to stay in pairs and remain vigilant.
  • After dark, Qin Mao fed blood to the Thousand-Faced Eerie Coconut, then the fleet heard a splash and cries to rescue people who had sunk into the sea.

Ch. 41Escape at sea

Yang Fan and Qin Mao investigated a creature following the Hope Fleet after several people were lured into the sea, but speeding up failed to shake it off. When a black figure damaged Qin Mao’s ship, he repaired the leak with all his remaining Kill Points and searched for the intruder.

  • Yang Fan stopped the rescue attempts and ordered everyone to stay out of the water after Wang Lao'er fell overboard.
  • Qin Mao joined Yang Fan, Ye Xuanyin, and Yan Qi to investigate the deaths and learned that witnesses could not remember the victims’ companions.
  • Yan Qi reported that Xuanxuan had gone out with his older brother Lele before falling into the sea, and Qin Mao asked Ye Xuanyin to question the boy with the Book of Answers.
  • The Hope Fleet sailed at full speed for three hours, but Yang Fan confirmed that the creature was still following them.
  • Qin Mao found a meter-long breach in his ship after Zhang Yu spotted a black figure, used all his Kill Points to repair it, and began searching for the intruder.

Ch. 42The culprit

Qin Mao realized that Zhang Yu was a dead mental-type Transcendent being controlled by the Chang-Driving Pufferfish, and shot him after exposing him. As Zhang Yu began to die, he asked Qin Mao how he had uncovered the truth.

  • After the Chang-Driving Pufferfish devoured another crew member, Yang Fan anchored the fleet and told everyone to stay together and watch for danger.
  • The fleet made it through the day without another attack, but Qin Mao grew increasingly certain that his suspicions about Zhang Yu were correct.
  • When the pufferfish returned after dark, Qin Mao confronted Zhang Yu and accused him of being a corpse controlled by the creature.
  • Qin Mao said Zhang Yu had approached him to push him into the sea, then shot him in the chest with [Just Verdict].
  • Zhang Yu admitted Qin Mao had exposed him and asked how Qin Mao had figured it out.

Ch. 43Fu Qingshi

Qin Mao exposed Zhang Yu as a corpse and resisted his mind control by recognizing that his reaction to [Just Verdict] revealed the weapon's importance. Zhang Yu identified Qin Mao as a [Free Person], then introduced himself as Fu Qingshi, a Sequence 4 Heartmare, and asked Qin Mao to kill a rival and deliver an apology to Zhang Jiayi.

  • Qin Mao explained that Zhang Yu could not be alive because his [Free Person] ability made him stronger when alone, and Zhang Yu realized Qin Mao had uncovered his true condition.
  • Zhang Yu identified Qin Mao's Sequence as [Free Person], alarming Qin Mao, who raised [Just Verdict] to protect his secret.
  • Zhang Yu tried to make Qin Mao believe [Just Verdict] was a toy, but Qin Mao resisted and used the blood-written word “gun” on the wheel to recall how he had countered the mind control.
  • Qin Mao recognized that Zhang Yu's astonished expression had revealed the weakness in [Impression Replacement], and Zhang Yu admitted defeat.
  • Zhang Yu asked Qin Mao to kill a [Free Person] with a mole on his eyelid and to tell Zhang Jiayi he was sorry.
  • Zhang Yu revealed that his name was Fu Qingshi and that he was a scientist and a Sequence 4 Heartmare of the [Endless Heart Aspect].

Ch. 44Yang Fan's deductions

Qin Mao killed Fu Qingshi, whose final words and a metal plate hinted at information about the apocalypse, and the gunshot broke the mental control affecting the fleet. Yang Fan explained how he had identified the other corpse impostors, but the Chang-Driving Pufferfish then began ramming the Ten-Thousand-Li Divine Radiance.

  • Fu Qingshi realized he had been dead for over a year, gave Qin Mao a metal plate, and asked him to preserve it before Qin Mao killed him with a gunshot that shattered the fleet’s mental barriers.
  • The disguise over two survivors on the Rose and the Hope fell away, and Qin Mao secretly pocketed the metal plate.
  • Yang Fan deduced that Fu Qingshi’s mental abilities had suppressed the fleet’s thoughts and actions, while Ye Xuanyin and Yan Qi regretted overlooking the signs of interference.
  • Yang Fan explained that he had identified two corpse impostors by noticing their clothes were wet in front but dry in back after they ran through the rain.
  • The Chang-Driving Pufferfish rammed the Ten-Thousand-Li Divine Radiance, and Qin Mao and Yang Fan prepared for its attack.

Ch. 45The Chang-Driving Pufferfish's Advance

Yang Fan, Qin Mao, and Yan Qi struggled to hit the Chang-Driving Pufferfish as it rammed the Ten-Thousand-Li Divine Radiance. When Yang Fan fell into the sea, Ye Xuanyin went in after him, leaving Yan Qi and Qin Mao to face the charging creature.

  • Yang Fan used his sensitivity to seawater to locate the Chang-Driving Pufferfish, but Qin Mao's shot and Yan Qi's newly assembled Fish-Bone Skeleton both missed.
  • The Chang-Driving Pufferfish repeatedly rammed the ship, then dove deeper and gathered strength for a stronger attack.
  • A violent jolt broke the railing Yang Fan was holding, and he fell into the sea, where he struggled to swim.
  • Ye Xuanyin dove in and dragged Yang Fan backward as the Chang-Driving Pufferfish charged toward them.
  • Yan Qi steadied himself and focused on making his one remaining shot count.

Ch. 46A one-shot kill

Qin Mao killed the Chang-Driving Pufferfish with one shot from [Just Verdict], and the survivors recovered its hide as Curio Material. The group then faced the question of how to divide it, while Qin Mao quietly prepared for a possible fight.

  • Yan Qi's Fish-Bone Skeleton wounded the Chang-Driving Pufferfish, but its inflated body resisted further attacks.
  • Qin Mao fired [Just Verdict] and killed the pufferfish with a Fish-Bone Bullet that detonated inside it.
  • Qin Mao led the others to retrieve the pufferfish's hide, which the system identified as Curio Material.
  • Yang Fan asked the group to discuss how to divide the hide, and the four fell silent.
  • Qin Mao kept a hand behind his back and readied himself to use [Just Verdict] if anyone attacked him.

Ch. 47Wondrous item distribution rules

Qin Mao established fair rules for distributing the Hope Fleet’s wondrous items after a battle, then learned that a child had pushed his brother overboard out of jealousy. The revelation left Qin Mao shaken by the boy’s chilling cruelty as his parents cried in grief.

  • Ye Xuanyin, Yan Qi, and Yang Fan each offered to give up their share of the Chang-Driving Pufferfish’s loot, until Qin Mao teased them and insisted the fleet needed clear distribution rules.
  • Qin Mao proposed rules based on contribution, including equal shares for joint kills and a share for Auxiliary Sequence members, and Yang Fan added that loot had to be allocated on the spot.
  • Qin Mao found a Soul-Binding Evil Pearl inside the pufferfish skin and claimed first pick for his contribution, while the others agreed to split the remaining materials.
  • Qin Mao wondered where the missing corpse had gone, and Ye Xuanyin revealed that no corpse had infiltrated the Yaximu: Red Scarf had pushed his older brother Xuanxuan overboard.
  • Red Scarf calmly told Ye Xuanyin that he had also once killed his mother’s kitten to win her attention, leaving Qin Mao horrified as the boy’s parents wailed.

Ch. 48The Extraordinary Must Not Be Insulted

Su Miaomiao secretly fed blood to the Thousand-Faced Eerie Coconut, hoping to claim Qin Mao’s ship, while Qin Mao watched and planned to make her suffer before killing her. After Red Scarf’s family tragedy, Qin Mao shot Red Scarf’s father for insulting him, and the Hope Fleet declared that the extraordinary must not be insulted.

  • Su Miaomiao continued bleeding herself to feed the Thousand-Faced Eerie Coconut, unaware Qin Mao could see her and knew about her plan to take his ship.
  • Qin Mao suppressed his hatred of Su Miaomiao and resolved to make her despair before killing her on the fifteenth day.
  • The fleet set sail after sleeping late, and survivors panicked when they heard Red Scarf’s mother had jumped into the sea with him; Yang Fan said they had committed suicide.
  • Red Scarf’s father blamed Qin Mao for his family’s deaths, and Qin Mao argued back before shooting him with a fishbone bullet.
  • The Hope Fleet announced a third iron law, “the extraordinary must not be insulted,” placing it above the ships’ other rules.

Ch. 49Eerie Creature Classifications: Initial Mutation and Eerie Mutation

Qin Mao upgraded his fishing rod but caught a five-headed mutated shark, then joined a fleet meeting where Yang Fan classified eerie sea creatures and the survivors discussed the falling rate of normal fish. Qin Mao suspected his Eerie Coconut was attracting creatures across the fleet and hid his concern as the meeting continued.

  • Qin Mao spent 1,000 Kill Points to upgrade his fishing rod, then hooked and released a five-headed great white shark that bit the Ten-Thousand-Li Divine Radiance.
  • Zhang Licheng summoned Qin Mao to a meeting with Yang Fan, Yan Qi, and Ye Xuanyin aboard the Hope.
  • Yang Fan classified sea creatures as eerie beings, Eerie Mutation creatures, and Initial Mutation creatures, and reported that normal fish made up only three percent of catches.
  • Yan Qi said the chance of catching normal fish had fallen to about one percent or less over the past four or five days.
  • Ye Xuanyin noted that the decline began when Qin Mao rejoined the fleet, and Qin Mao concealed his suspicion that the Eerie Coconut was attracting creatures throughout the fleet.

Ch. 50Two years ago

Qin Mao and the others traced the skeletal attacks to an apocalypse that had begun unfolding years before its public arrival, then discussed staying in safer waters. Yang Fan handed Qin Mao a short, ominous note that left him terrified.

  • Yang Fan identified the freshest remains as Wang Laosan and estimated that the other two skeletons had been dead for a year or two.
  • Qin Mao explained that time flowed faster farther out at sea, and the skeletons’ account showed that people had sailed into danger by 2039, before the apocalypse fully descended in June 2040.
  • Yang Fan connected the earlier preparations for navigation lessons and sailing supplies to signs that the apocalypse had begun as early as 2038.
  • Qin Mao deduced that the Chang-Driving Pufferfish had used the skeletons to infiltrate the fleet and kill Wang Laosan and another person.
  • Qin Mao noticed fresh blade wounds on Ye Xuanyin’s arm and suspected they were a cost of her Transcendent Sequence.
  • Qin Mao suggested staying in the relatively safe waters, but Yang Fan gave him a note whose contents made his blood run cold.
