Does Everyone Have It at Home?
After buying some snacks for her Son and Daughter, Elena led the Brother and Sister around Diagon Alley, eating as they shopped—simply put, a food-and-shopping spree.
Since Bell wanted to enter every shop to see what it sold, the three of them moved rather slowly.
While shopping, Bell bought a Flying Broomstick suitable for beginners, then spent a long time lingering in the Pet Shop. He really wanted a pet, but considering that Shanna was still too young and might get hurt by one, he ultimately gave up on the idea.
Inside a Magic Item Shop, Bell eagerly led Shanna around to look at everything.
"Mom, how does a Remembrall sense whether the person holding it has forgotten something?" Bell asked curiously.
Elena was completely stumped by the question.
How does it work? I have no idea! I've never even thought about that!
Elena coughed twice, trying hard to preserve her dignity as a mother.
"You just cast some very powerful magic on a Glass Ball, and then it can do that."
→_→
"What is it? Do you have another question?"
Sensing that Elena was on the verge of becoming embarrassed and angry, Bell promptly surrendered.
"No, Mom. I want this." Bell pointed at the Remembrall.
"We have that at home. Mom will get it for you when we go back."
"Oh."
Before long, Bell spotted another magical item that interested him—the Sneakoscope.
"Mom, how does a Sneakoscope... um... Mom, I want this."
Elena somehow felt that her authority as a mother had just been challenged.
She narrowed her eyes at Bell for a moment, then said with a smile, "We have this at home too. Mom will get it for you when we go back."
Again? I like this.
Bell took Shanna's hand and continued browsing.
"Mom, this Two-Way Mirror..."
"We have it at home."
Elena decisively cut off whatever Bell was about to say. Even she felt her earlier explanation had been a little too far-fetched. What if Bell asked how a Two-Way Mirror was made? How would she know? Hogwarts had never taught that...
That was right! It was all Hogwarts' fault! Hogwarts' curriculum was flawed, which was why she didn't know! It was absolutely not her problem. Back then, she had even been a prefect—a top student!
"..."
"No, why does our house have everything?" Bell asked in astonishment.
"There's no harm in preparing more magical items. So we basically have one or two of every magical item available on the market in the Treasure Vault at home. We've also collected quite a few things that aren't usually available for purchase," Elena said matter-of-factly.
In response to his Mom's outrageously rich declaration, Bell only wanted to say: well done!
Since they had everything at home, Bell no longer had any desire to keep looking. Seeing that it was almost lunchtime, he decided to make one final stop at Flourish and Blotts to buy a few books before ending the day's shopping.
Then...
"There's a Library on the fourth floor at home. It has more books than the bookstore. If you want to read something, just look for it there."
"..."
"It's about time for lunch. How about Mom takes you two to the Leaky Cauldron? The Leaky Cauldron is very famous, and although it's a bar, the food tastes pretty good too," Elena suggested.
Compared to British cuisine, anyone with hands can make food that tastes reasonably good. Or maybe even feet would do?
But Bell only dared to think that. Saying something like that on the street would make it easy to get mobbed.
"No! Shanna is still so little. How can we take her to a bar? Besides, I heard there aren't many decent people in the Leaky Cauldron. What if Shanna gets led astray? Let's go home for lunch instead. Shanna is tired too, and after eating, she should take a nap."
Elena thought it over and felt that she really had not considered things carefully enough. So, she readily agreed and took the Brother and Sister home, ending their shopping trip for the day.
After lunch, Shanna, who had already been exhausted from half a day of shopping, immediately fell asleep.
Bell was a little sleepy too, but having received his Wand on the first day, he was incredibly excited. He lovingly played with it, performing maintenance on it first before finally preparing to attempt his first Curse.
He opened The Standard Book of Spells, Grade 1 and found the first spell it introduced—Lumos. Bell had long since memorized Lumos's incantation and casting motion, but since this was his first time using magic, he reviewed it once more just to be safe.
After practicing the motion a few times and confirming there was no problem, Bell firmly stood up and went into the garden.
"Lumos!"
Following the instructions in the book, Bell slowly waved his Wand and resolutely spoke the incantation, then... succeeded!?
Looking at the cool-toned glow emanating from his Wand Tip, Bell's mind went blank.
He had succeeded that easily!?
Bell felt as though all his nervousness and seriousness from earlier had been a performance for a blind man.
He had thought that his first spellcasting would at least require him to undergo eighty-one trials or something. But instead... this was it!?
Well, no matter what, successfully casting the spell was a good thing. It seemed he had been a little overly nervous.
After casting Lumos several more times, Bell, now free of psychological pressure, was already able to cast it quickly and easily.
After all, it was the most basic Curse. Maybe this was normal?
Bell flipped forward several pages in The Standard Book of Spells, Grade 1 and found the book's second spell—the Repairing Charm.
This time, he was no longer as nervous as before. However, he did not abandon the necessary caution, so he practiced the casting motion several times before officially casting it.
Bell tore a tiny corner from the spellbook.
"Reparo!"
"..."
Bell succeeded again. The torn corner flew back into place and fused with the page, leaving no trace that it had ever been ripped off.
Well... basic Curse, standard procedure.
Afterward, Bell tried some slightly more difficult Curses, such as the Cutting Curse, Breaking Curse, and Petrification Curse. He successfully cast all of them as well, but their effects... were practically nonexistent.
He felt like he understood a little. By speaking the incantation, one strengthened one's conviction; through casting gestures, one guided magical power; then the magic could be successfully cast. It was like using a computer to calculate addition and subtraction—as long as the correct numbers and formulas were entered, the correct answer would appear.
After studying magic for a while, Bell felt that he could no longer hold on. After all, he was only five years old. He had spent half the day shopping, then studied Curses for a while, and his body was already protesting fiercely.
Ah... I really miss those days when I was overflowing with stamina. I wonder if the girls in my phone miss me?
Returning to Little Shanna's bedroom, Bell lay down on the bed, hugged his little sister, and fell into a deep sleep.
