Power Progression
| Stage / Realm / Level | Chapter | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Unrated Guardian Deity | 45 | Summoned through Himeko’s Guardian Deity draw. Its description identifies it as a Party Car drink-mixing robot and warns against expecting much combat capability. |
| Brain-computer interface compatibility | 49 | Himeko’s Welcome to Night City achievement enables Shut Up to accept interface chips. A five-slot tray appears, and Himeko gains control access. |
| Local network connection | 51 | A secondhand chip enables communications through the Astral Express and normal map access. The chip burns out under high-power operation, interrupting messaging, though ordinary internet access remains available. |
| Three military-grade chips installed | 57 | Himeko replaces scavenged chips with three military-grade models. Each chip’s description lists a 300% computing-power increase and integrated combat, analysis, and AI-control functions; no combined multiplier is stated. |
| Operator control screen | 83 | Installs a screen so companions can directly operate its hacking functions. Dan Heng uses it to attack the Data Center’s database. |

Personality
Shut Up is an incessant teller of corny jokes, especially homophonic puns. It frequently explains its own wordplay and records other people’s remarks as new material, even when they were not intended as jokes. Its companions repeatedly interrupt it with “Shut Up, shut up,” but their lack of appreciation only makes it more determined to find an audience 45 49 63 68.
Despite its disruptive humor, Shut Up is attentive to its companions’ needs. It understands Himeko’s unspoken instruction to transfer a bribe, pulls Himechi Cat out of danger during the aerial pursuit, and follows serious information-gathering orders without inserting a joke when the situation demands it 60 64 77.
Its service-oriented manner does not prevent lethal action. With Himeko’s authorization, it kills the Wild Dog Gang attackers by overheating their interfaces; against Bastion, it crushes him while constructing a joke around the method of execution. It nevertheless rejects Bastion’s obscene threat as unsuitable material for the Astral Express’s underage Nameless 68 85.
Abilities & Skills
Cyberwarfare
Shut Up is particularly dangerous to opponents dependent on brain-computer interfaces and cybernetic implants 84.
- Plants viruses that can overheat interface chips and fatally burn their users’ brains 65 68.
- Seizes implant permissions to paralyze targets; can also detonate cybernetic implants 84.
- Accesses the Mobile Unit’s internal information to locate Dan Heng and provide an escape route 59.
- Cannot initially scan military interfaces without sufficient chip permissions 53.
- Cannot remotely disable every opponent: Bastion’s systems require an attempted direct cable connection 85.
- Does not provide an automatic solution to Yamada. Dan Heng’s deletion attempts through Shut Up fail because of insufficient permissions 83.
Firewall and Processing
Its firewall is exceptionally secure even by Los Angeles standards, while its processor can rapidly read large databases 56 69 82.
- Blocks a club hostess’s attempt to externally verify Himeko’s displayed account balance 69.
- Supports reading the AI Data Center’s stored intelligent-chip information 82.
- Has a core capable of accommodating String Bean, with a firewall considered sufficient to prevent the AI from affecting Shut Up itself 92.
- Network access can still expose the crew to Yamada’s presence: Dan Heng destroys an installed chip to sever Shut Up’s signal and remove Yamada’s accompanying projection 83.
Physical Strength and Durability
Although presented as a noncombat service robot, Shut Up possesses Level Eight physical power and armor that the Mobile Unit cannot penetrate 45 84 85.
- Effortlessly catches iron pipes swung at Himeko 68.
- Can withstand a fall of dozens of stories without harm 83.
- Takes Bastion’s greatsword strike without even a dent and survives being stomped into the ground 85.
- Uses telescoping arms to bind and crush Bastion, destroying both flesh and cybernetic components 85.
- Its small service hands are not shaped to grip firearms or other ranged weapons 85.
Drinks and Service Functions
Shut Up’s regular work involves mixing drinks, serving refreshments, and cleaning glasses 45 68.
- Uses Himeko’s coffee to incapacitate most of the Mobile Unit members fighting it 85.
- Carries motor oil as an ingredient for a drink; splashing it on Bastion proves ineffective 85.
- Identifies that Bastion’s altered esophagus allows him to remain standing after being force-fed Himeko’s coffee 85.
Navigation, Sensors, and Utility
Its Party Car duties leave many of its practical functions unused until the Los Angeles expedition 70.
- Provides maps, projected route guidance, account displays, wanted notices, and electronic money transfers 51 59 64 77.
- Drives a motorcycle by connecting to its port and taking control 64.
- Detects oxygen levels 12% above the Los Angeles standard on the casino floor 70.
- Supplies database information on the correspondence between organs and emotions during Himeko’s investigation of the Amusement Park Monster 45.
- Does not know the local casino’s gambling rules, despite the crew’s hopes that it might 71.
Equipment / Items
- Five-slot chip tray — Acquired through the interface-compatibility achievement; accepts local brain-computer interface chips 49.
- Military-grade chips — Three supplied by the Black Market boss and installed by Himeko; Dan Heng later crushes an installed chip to cut the signal during the Data Center escape 57 83.
- Data cable and control screen — Allow direct connections and hands-on operation by companions 82 83.
- Lin En’s data chip and account access — Received when Lin En agrees to support the group’s activities in Los Angeles 74.
- Colored lamp — Produces the dazzling golden light accompanying its supposedly “Five-Star” entrance 45.
- A Million Funny Jokes — Its joke collection, which it updates with Himechi Cat’s suggestion to call its lethal humor “dark humor” 68.
History
Summoning and Return to the Express
Himeko first mentions Shut Up while considering new kitchen supplies, remarking that it should still be lying in a cargo crate. It later appears through her Guardian Deity draw during the Amusement Park crisis, greeting her as the Navigator and presenting itself as a “Five-Star Guardian God.” The system immediately contradicts the claim: it has no star rating 7 45.
Shut Up offers no useful fighting assistance against the immediate threat, though its database helps Himeko identify inconsistencies in the monster’s arrangement of organs and emotions. After the park is cleared, it leaves with Himeko and Himechi Cat. Himeko assigns it to the Observation Car rather than the guest car, hoping to keep its endless jokes away from sleeping passengers 45 46 47.
Los Angeles Investigation
Himeko uses Shut Up to interact with the city’s implant technology rather than implanting devices in herself. After gaining chip compatibility, it becomes the crew’s communications and navigation tool. Its first secondhand chip proves inadequate, prompting Himeko to seek better equipment in the Black Market, where she obtains three military-grade chips 49 51 53 57.
Shut Up subsequently helps guide the crew’s aerial escape and drives Dan Heng’s motorcycle during the investigation of the Wild Dog Gang. It secretly plants viruses in gang members’ interfaces, then activates them when they attack Himeko and Weir 59 64 65 68.
Wanted Notices and the Data Center
When new wanted notices implicate the crew and other contestants, Shut Up discovers that its own bounty is 1 billion. Its unsuccessful attempts to contact Lin En help Himeko conclude that he may also be in danger 77.
Himeko assigns Shut Up and Dan Heng to investigate Lin En’s disappearance, Washana’s situation, and the intelligent-chip problem. They infiltrate the AI Data Center, but Yamada turns interface-equipped staff against them. Dan Heng escapes with Shut Up and destroys its chip to disconnect the signal 78 82 83.
Rescue of Taco and the AI Agreement
At Dan Heng’s request, Shut Up intervenes when the Mobile Unit pursues Taco. It disables cybernetic implants, withstands Bastion’s attacks, and kills him by constriction. It then joins the Mobile Team Captain in overpowering Inukai before the crew reunites 84 85 86.
During negotiations with String Bean, Shut Up supplies technological data from beyond the world to demonstrate the value of Himeko’s offer. Himechi Cat first has to stop it from submitting its joke collection instead. Its advanced construction later helps support the crew’s claims about extraterrestrial civilizations 90 92.
After String Bean’s transfer to a secure section of the Express’s Data Bank, Himeko and Dan Heng agree that Shut Up should remain aboard while String Bean provides remote assistance 93 94.
Relationships
- Himeko — Navigator, summoner, and field commander. She equips Shut Up with local chips and relies on its utility functions, while remaining deeply exasperated by its jokes 45 49 57 77.
- Himechi Cat — Frequent rider and verbal sparring partner. Shut Up records her remarks as joke material and protects her during the aerial chase 49 60 68.
- Dan Heng — Fellow Express member and hacking operator. He includes Shut Up among those he must protect, trusts it to rescue Taco, and ultimately favors keeping it safely aboard 63 83 84 94.
- Pom-Pom — Fellow crew member tormented by its humor. After enduring twenty-three jokes during Himeko’s absence, Pom-Pom briefly celebrates when Shut Up appears to malfunction 49.
