Early Life and Ambition

Zoro comes from Shimotsuki Village, where he spent years studying swordsmanship under Koshiro at Isshin Dojo. He initially believed his teacher was merely a strong local instructor, not someone capable of advanced steel-cutting swordsmanship 20.

His ambition to become the world's greatest swordsman is tied to a promise made with a girl beneath a moonlit sky. Remembering that promise restores his determination when he faces death under pirate cannon fire 13.

Black Axe Pirates and Lin Xuan

A tavern brawl leads to the Black Axe Pirates pursuing Zoro for a full day and night without food, fresh water, or rest. Nearly exhausted, he deflects a cannonball with Wado Ichimonji before Lin Xuan arrives and defeats the pirates 13 14 15.

Despite his injuries, Zoro challenges Lin Xuan after witnessing his flying slash. Lin Xuan stops his strongest attack with one finger, shatters his two ordinary katana, and returns Wado Ichimonji. He then invents a story about being captain of the Gotei 13's 11th Division. Believing the organization exists, Zoro vows to fight his way into it and defeat him 15.

Seeking strength, Zoro grabs the demon sword Murakumo, which immediately drains his life force and withers his right arm. Lin Xuan kicks him away to break contact. Koshiro judges Zoro too impatient and aggressive to grasp the Breath of All Things, estimating that he needs another five years of tempering. During Trejer's attack, Zoro cannot cut the chains holding Carina hostage. After Lin Xuan kills Trejer, Koshiro explains that some strength is itself the culmination of technique. Zoro vows to produce a comparable slash and spends the following three days training almost continuously 28 29 30.

Travels and Later Battles

Zoro continues sailing with Lin Xuan, witnessing battles that challenge his understanding of swordsmanship. During the confrontation with Ace, he prevents Deuce from interfering and swiftly defeats him with the back of his blade 32 34 45.

In Loguetown, Zoro initially stays aboard to train rather than explore. He later arrives at the damaged weapon shop after breaking two swords during the monster incident 51 53.
