Ch. 21The mirror

Dunn found a mysterious silver mirror in his cabin, but it repeatedly returned after he tried to discard it. The mirror identified itself as the Eye of the Firmament and began addressing a group that included Dunn.

  • After returning from his bath, Dunn spotted an unfamiliar silver mirror on his desk and suspected it was dangerous.
  • The mirror emitted silver light, moved in front of Dunn, and compelled him to pick it up; writing appeared saying, "Good. Now everyone is here."
  • Dunn threw the mirror into the sea, but it reappeared in his cabin, so he locked it in a box and threw the box overboard.
  • Annie asked Dunn if something had happened, but he dismissed her and returned to his cabin.
  • Dunn saw the mirror floating behind him and watched it identify itself as the Eye of the Firmament.

Ch. 22Eye of the Firmament

Dunn learned that the Eye of the Firmament had selected him and others as likely future legendaries, offering resources in exchange for joining a dangerous experiment after they advanced. He remained wary of the offer’s hidden cost as the Eye invited him to ask questions through the mirror.

  • Dunn recognized the Eye of the Firmament as a powerful high legendary with a seat on the Wizard Council.
  • The Eye explained that the silver mirrors were legendary items bound to their hosts and had selected people with strong potential to reach legendary rank.
  • The Eye revealed that its group’s experiment had killed several legendaries, and that it wanted newly advanced legendaries as subjects.
  • The Eye offered to provide resources and assistance in exchange for the hosts’ cooperation after reaching legendary rank, while letting them decide freely.
  • Dunn weighed the advantages against the experiment’s dangers and suspected the offer carried a price he might not be able to repay.

Ch. 23Wei Sheep

Dunn learned that the Eye of the Firmament would offer rare resources to selected professionals who completed missions or paid for them, then recognized his code name as Wei Sheep. As the group began introducing themselves, Dunn learned that one member was a second-tier [Navy], a class that might oppose his own.

  • The Eye of the Firmament promised extraordinary resources, including willpower magic potions, but said members would need to earn contribution points through missions or buy resources with gold.
  • Dunn identified the animal on his mirror as a sheep and concluded that his code name was Wei Sheep.
  • The Eye of the Firmament told members to sign the River Styx Contract by spreading blood over their code-name animal on the mirror, then ended the question session.
  • You Rooster and Yin Tiger invited the members to introduce themselves, while Dunn suspected the group might eventually turn against one another.
  • Yin Tiger introduced himself as Charles, a fourth-tier [Martial Artist] nearing legendary advancement, and Mao Rabbit introduced herself as Christina, a second-tier [Navy].
  • Dunn wondered whether Christina's [Navy] class opposed his own and recalled that some opposing classes had to kill each other during their legendary advancement rituals.

Ch. 24Cutlass Harbor

Dunn kept his distance from the Eye of the Firmament while considering it a possible option if he hit a bottleneck. After half a month of training and sailing, he brought the [Black Pearl] to Cutlass Harbor to recruit pirates and arrange a costly refit.

  • Dunn decided not to sign a River Styx Contract or join the Eye of the Firmament unless he had no better choice.
  • Dunn sparred with Green and adapted his [Thunderclap Sword Technique], while his strength increased by one point.
  • The lookout announced Cutlass Harbor, and Dunn told Annie he planned to refit the [Black Pearl] with more than a hundred gunports.
  • Dunn ordered Lewis and Hans to recruit at least two hundred elite pirates, guard the ship, and find a shipyard, while Annie agreed to fund the refit.
  • The [Black Pearl] paid an entry fee to an old guide, who led it through Cutlass Harbor's dangerous coastal waters.

Ch. 25Ranger Engels

In Cutlass Harbor, the Black Pearl drew a crowd of sailors as Dunn and his companions recruited crew. Ranger Engels approached Annie, then asked Dunn to join the ship, and Dunn welcomed him aboard.

  • Sailors flocked to Lewis, Hans, and the other Black Pearl recruiters after hearing about the ship’s pay and Captain Dunn’s 400-gold-coin bounty.
  • Dunn, Annie, and Green watched from the Sea Warrior Bar as the Black Pearl’s recruitment drew attention across the harbor.
  • Engels approached Annie, introduced himself as an unaffiliated Ranger, and asked to serve aboard her ship.
  • Annie directed Engels to Dunn, who welcomed him aboard the Black Pearl.

Ch. 26Ruins

Dunn and Annie considered how to advance their classes when Engels proposed exploring ruins discovered by Captain Grant. Grant met with Dunn but refused to let his crew join the expedition, leaving Engels embarrassed in front of his new captain.

  • Annie explained that advancing to Weather Master required surviving and recording several kinds of disastrous sea weather, while Dunn asked the crew for ideas about where to go.
  • Engels said Captain Grant of the White Shark had found ruins believed to belong to an ancient Pirate King and was recruiting captains to explore them.
  • Dunn agreed to meet Grant, and Engels went to bring him to the Sea Warrior Bar.
  • Grant told Dunn he had already recruited three other captains and did not need Dunn's crew to join the expedition.
  • Engels looked distressed at Grant's refusal, Annie frowned, and Dunn remained composed.

Ch. 27The storm

Dunn and the other captains sailed from Cutlass Harbor on a joint expedition, while Dunn drew more Devil Fruits and a sailor on another ship accidentally unleashed the Flame-Flame Fruit’s power. The five ships reached the edge of a potentially natural-disaster-class storm, and Dunn ordered the [Black Pearl] to press on.

  • Dunn accepted Engels’s agreement to join the expedition, and Engels said the ships would depart in three days.
  • Dunn sailed with four other captains and drew the Spike-Spike Fruit and the Spring-Spring Fruit during the voyage.
  • A pirate captain and his Navigator forced a sailor to eat a cursed fruit, which caused flames to engulf their ship.
  • Annie warned Dunn that the five ships were approaching a dangerous storm, and Dunn learned that the [White Shark] had ordered them to follow.
  • Dunn ordered everyone aboard the [Black Pearl] to prepare to face the storm.

Ch. 28Arrival

Dunn and the other pirate crews survived a supernatural storm by reaching an island where the weather calmed. The five captains met on shore and began looking for a sheltered campsite.

  • Annie told Dunn that the unmoving storm seemed to have been created by an exceptionally powerful fourth-tier professional or spell.
  • A lookout spotted an island, and Dunn ordered the Black Pearl to follow the White Shark's exact route through the reefs.
  • The five pirate ships entered a sheltered bay, where the wind and waves subsided, and anchored safely.
  • Dunn left Hans and several sailors to guard the Black Pearl while he took the rest of the crew ashore.
  • Dunn met Feishman, Astor, Hawkins, and Grant, assessed the other crews' strength, and joined them in searching for shelter from the rain.

Ch. 29Beaten to the Punch

The captains confronted Grant for hiding the unnatural storm and its casualties, but their dispute was interrupted when Green reported that another group had reached the ruins first. Grant revealed that the group belonged to Angry Whale Jaeger, a newly advanced third-tier Great Pirate, leaving the captains to reckon with a powerful rival already at the ruins.

  • Feishman, Astor, and Hawkins accused Grant of concealing the danger of the storm, and Grant called it a test of the captains and their crews.
  • Feishman and the other captains rose angrily against Grant as the gathering neared a fight.
  • Green returned from the joint scouting party and told Dunn and Annie that dozens of people had reached the ruins before them.
  • A scout confirmed that the group had been waiting at the ruins' entrance, and the captains turned their suspicion back on Grant.
  • Grant revealed that Jaeger had discovered the island with him after their past clash and explained that Jaeger had recently advanced to the third tier.

Ch. 30Angry Whale

Dunn and the other captains debated whether they could resist [Angry Whale] Jaeger, who had arrived at the ancient Pirate King’s ruins. After tensions flared between the captains and Annie’s group, Dunn asked Grant about Jaeger’s profession, but Grant did not know Jaeger’s new third-tier path.

  • The captains dismissed Jaeger as a threat, while Annie rebuked them for underestimating a third-tier professional.
  • Feishman threatened Annie, prompting Green to reveal [Red Beak] and Engels to ready his longbow.
  • Grant urged Dunn to preserve their cooperation, and Dunn asked for information about Jaeger’s profession.
  • Grant identified Jaeger’s former profession as [Whaler] and named his three second-tier subordinates, but could not say what Jaeger’s third-tier profession was.

Ch. 31Sea Beast Priest

Dunn learned that a third-tier [Whaler] became a [Sea Beast Priest], whose abilities included [Mutation], and weighed the danger of confronting the newly advanced [Angry Whale]. He agreed to join the captains’ attack, but insisted they first devise a careful plan.

  • Annie explained that [Sea Beast Priest] was the third-tier advancement of [Whaler] and that its core ability, [Mutation], created sea monster tentacles.
  • Annie told Dunn and the captains that [Sea Beast Priests] could also use beguilement and sound waves, and estimated that [Angry Whale] could produce at most three tentacles.
  • Dunn considered the strength of sea monsters and the risks of fighting a third-tier professional while the captains urged him to decide quickly.
  • Dunn agreed to join the venture against [Angry Whale] and called for a detailed plan.

Ch. 32Interrogation

Dunn and the other captains captured [Angry Whale]'s people and learned from [Whaler] Elvin that Jaeger had been trapped in the ruins for months. Elvin's account left them debating whether to trust him before they decided they still needed him.

  • Dunn ordered his pirates to seize the people at [Angry Whale]'s settlement, and they quickly defeated the outnumbered defenders and captured Elvin.
  • Elvin told Dunn and the captains that Jaeger and dozens of men had entered the ruins months earlier and had not returned.
  • Elvin explained that the Navigator had gone with Jaeger and that a living tentacle inside his body showed Jaeger was still alive.
  • Elvin said he had disclosed the situation because he could not get past the ruins' mechanisms and hoped the newcomers would affect Jaeger's predicament.
  • Astor suspected Jaeger had prepared an ambush and drew a dagger, but Grant stopped him, arguing that they should keep Elvin alive.

Ch. 33Entering the Ruins

Dunn and the other captains entered the underground ruins, where they found ancient murals and the remains of an earlier expedition. Grant led them onward past looted rooms, while Dunn began to suspect that Grant had concealed who had taken their contents.

  • Grant persuaded Astor to stand down, then organized the captains to take four people each into the ruins.
  • Dunn left Annie and Lewis to manage the camp and entered with Green, Engels, and two classed pirates.
  • The captains descended through a cave and passed through a carved stone doorway into the ruins.
  • Dunn studied murals telling the story of a man who became a sea king and noticed that the underground air remained fresh.
  • The group found the remains of crew members from Grant and Jaeger's previous expedition in a large hall.
  • Grant said the side rooms had already been looted and led the group onward, prompting Dunn to wonder whether Grant or Jaeger had taken their contents.

Ch. 34The Abyss

Grant led the pirates to a doorway opening onto a bottomless abyss and suspected a mechanism waited on the far side. Engels successfully fired a rope-tethered arrow across and anchored the rope, giving the group a way to cross.

  • Feishman challenged Grant for leading the group through empty rooms, and Grant insisted the real treasures lay farther ahead.
  • Grant showed the group the abyss and said he had found nothing suspicious on their side, so he suspected a mechanism was across the gap.
  • Dunn held back from crossing because the far side was unknown and Jaeger might still be nearby.
  • Astor proposed searching the other rooms, but Engels spotted protrusions across the abyss that could secure ropes.
  • Engels repeatedly fired a rope-tethered arrow across the gap until it caught on the far side, and the pirates cheered as the rope went taut.

Ch. 35Death

Dunn and the other captains crossed the abyss and found a hall containing a glowing purple orb, a crowned corpse, and the bodies of the [Whaler] crew. Astor determined the crew had been crushed by Transcendent-level strength and likely killed by someone they trusted, leaving the group to face an unknown threat.

  • The five factions agreed to cross the abyss in turns, with Astor's people first, Grant's last, and Dunn's fourth.
  • The pirates crossed safely and cautiously followed the corridor to a hall illuminated by a purple orb.
  • Dunn spotted a crowned, withered figure seated on a lavish stone chair as the pirates eyed the orb greedily.
  • Engels identified the [Whaler]'s captain and Navigator among a heap of bodies, while Astor noted the number matched Elvin's account.
  • Grant sent Elvin to inspect the bodies, and Astor concluded the crew had been crushed by immense force and killed by someone they did not expect.

Ch. 36Jaeger?

Astor identified [Angry Whale] Jaeger as the likely killer, and the group found him alive but emaciated beneath the stone chair. When Elvin rushed to his captain, Jaeger killed him and revealed monstrous golden eyes, leaving the others to face the truth that Jaeger had become something inhuman.

  • Elvin rejected Astor’s conclusion, but Grant struck him down before his outburst could alert anyone further.
  • Engel spotted a figure beneath the stone chair, and the group discovered Jaeger kneeling there, withered and barely alive.
  • Elvin broke free and ran to Jaeger, while the others noticed a quiet voice that only those with heightened perception could hear.
  • Jaeger seized Elvin’s wrist and said one had slipped through the net.
  • Jaeger plunged his arm into Elvin, pulled out a struggling tentacle, and revealed golden vertical pupils as Elvin died.

Ch. 37Who Said Hiding in the Back Was Safe!

Jaeger ate the tentacle and transformed into a monstrous mass of tentacles, attacking the pirates in the underground space. Dunn tried to shield himself and his men, but Jaeger struck him and sent him flying.

  • Jaeger swallowed the tentacle despite Dunn ordering the pirates to stop him.
  • Jaeger clutched his head in pain and complained that his Career Ability was poisonous.
  • Jaeger transformed into several enormous tentacles covered in fanged mouths and yellow eyes.
  • Jaeger’s tentacle smashed a Navigator and sent several classless pirates flying.
  • Dunn activated Rokushiki: Tekkai to block Jaeger’s attack, but the tentacle sent him flying as Green and the others dodged.

Ch. 38Playing Around

Jaeger transformed into a tentacled monster and attacked the captains, killing several people and badly injuring Dunn. Engels observed that Jaeger seemed unaware and was attacking instinctively, giving the group a possible chance to kill him.

  • Dunn was sent flying by Jaeger, while Green warned the pirates to stay focused on the fight.
  • Jaeger’s eerie laughter overwhelmed the group, and his tentacles crushed several people as Feishman, Astor, and Grant questioned his strength and the information they had received.
  • Green explained that Jaeger’s number of tentacles suggested he had been stronger before advancing than Grant had claimed.
  • Dunn returned after recovering from his injuries and revealed that his stamina was 22 points, with defense equivalent to 25.
  • Engels reasoned that Jaeger lacked awareness and was attacking instinctively, then said this gave them a chance to kill him.

Ch. 39Drawing attention

Dunn and the other captains tried to distract Jaeger's five tentacles so Engels could shoot Jaeger's human head, but the plan grew less promising as the tentacles attacked. After the captains injured the eyes on their assigned tentacles, Dunn reluctantly moved in to draw his tentacle's attention while worrying about Jaeger's true condition.

  • Engels proposed keeping all five of Jaeger's tentacles occupied so he could shoot Jaeger's head, and the captains split into five groups to carry out the plan.
  • Dunn's tentacle singled him out, and its Impact ability sent him flying even though it did not touch him.
  • Hawkins, Astor, Grant, and Feishman approached their assigned tentacles, while Dunn realized his tentacle seemed to target him alone.
  • Astor injured an eye on his tentacle, and the captains followed his example, provoking the tentacles into furious attacks.
  • Dunn noticed the tentacle roared independently of Jaeger's head and the other tentacles, then stepped forward to draw its attention rather than flee.

Ch. 40Rampage

Engels and Grant struck Jaeger's exposed head, but Jaeger survived and rose high above the group, making his head impossible to reach. Green proposed stalling until Jaeger's career ability ran out of energy, and the group fled past the doorway as Jaeger crashed into its wall.

  • Dunn drew the tentacle's attacks away from Jaeger while Engels shot an arrow through Jaeger's right eye, provoking a roar but failing to kill him.
  • Four tentacles wrapped around Jaeger's head while the fifth continued attacking Dunn, and Grant shot Jaeger's head through a gap in the tentacles.
  • Jaeger braced himself on two tentacles and rose several dozen meters above the ground, leaving the group unable to reach his head.
  • Astor urged everyone to flee, but Green proposed stalling until Jaeger's enormous body depleted the energy sustaining it.
  • The group ran toward the stone doorway, then turned and fled in another direction, and Jaeger crashed into the wall around the doorway.
