|---|---|---|
| Veteran Haki master | 83 | Already possesses exceptional physical strength, Armament Haki, and Conqueror’s Haki. Boer judges a direct hit capable of breaking through his concentrated Armament defenses and damaging his internal organs. |
| Ultimate integrated battle stance revealed | 168 | Combines Life Return, materialized Conqueror’s coating, and top-level Armament Haki/Ryuo. Dense dark-red currents emerge from his body, slowing bleeding and beginning to mend shallow injuries. This is an existing technique revealed in battle, not a stated new acquisition. |
| Abyss-contract empowerment and Float-Float Fruit integration | 316 | After agreeing to contract with Imu to save Ace, receives vast life force drawn from Sunlight Tree Eve and regains his youthful appearance. His physical foundation and three types of Haki combine with the newly integrated Float-Float Fruit, allowing him to overwhelm Kaido and Linlin 312 317. |
Background
Garp served alongside Tsuru for more than fifty years, having entered recruit camp with her. His long career included pursuing the Pirate King for over half his life, and his reputation became one of the Marines’ strongest sources of legitimacy 224 309 310.
Despite receiving orders to search for and execute infants in the South Blue to eliminate Roger’s bloodline, Garp adopted Roger’s son, Ace. He also raised his biological grandson, Luffy, whose father, Dragon, had left the Marines and become the Revolutionary Army’s leader 309 313.
Garp’s approach to raising the boys emphasized survival and physical toughness: he left them in dangerous forests, made them confront wild beasts, and disciplined them with his “Fist of Love.” He later acknowledged serious doubts about those methods after seeing Boer’s instruction and hearing Bellemere’s criticism 169 170.
Appearance
- Build: Nearly three meters tall, with a powerful, heavily trained physique; his exposed torso bears numerous battle scars 83 142.
- Hair: Initially short, upright, and gray-and-black; later described as gray-white 83 224.
- Clothing: Commonly wears a Marine shirt beneath a coat marked “Justice.” His arrival in Bernia also features a dog-head hat 82 83.
- Contract-restored form: Regains thick black hair and a face resembling his 24-year-old self. At Marineford, he discards his justice coat and fights in a simple blue-and-white sailor shirt without rank insignia 316.
Personality
Garp is loud, mischievous, and eager to fight strong opponents. He disguises threats and tests of strength as affectionate greetings, calling his attacks “fists of love” and “Cannonballs of Love.” His casual habits—picking his nose during serious meetings, eating senbei, and bickering with Sengoku—contrast with the authority his presence carries 76 82 128 195.
Beneath that manner, he possesses considerable judgment and a conscience independent of the World Government. He defends Boer by citing disaster relief and Bernia’s reduction in piracy, arguing that prosperity gives desperate people alternatives to crime. He also personally apologizes to Robin for Ohara, despite being unable to speak for the Marines or the Celestial Dragons 83 128.
His loyalty to the Marines repeatedly conflicts with his attachment to family. He recognizes that a lifetime of fulfilling his public duties did not make him a good father or grandfather, and ultimately accepts Imu’s contract to save Ace 312.
Garp regards ordinary Marines, particularly recruits and soldiers who followed him into battle, as his greatest achievement rather than his reputation as the strongest Marine. Their suffering eventually breaks through Imu’s control and restores his own will 320.
Abilities & Skills
Physical Strength and Close-Quarters Combat
Garp relies on direct, economical hand-to-hand combat backed by decades of experience 142 167.
- Matches the fist of Boer’s seventy-meter metal construct and shatters it from within using Haki 142.
- Uses punches, kicks, uppercuts, grappling counters, and precise attacks against vulnerable openings 167 224 228.
- Retains extraordinary bodily toughness even when Boer briefly disrupts his Armament Haki 167.
- After his contract enhancement, suppresses Kaido and Linlin simultaneously, using their weapons and larger bodies against them 317 320.
Armament Haki
Garp’s advanced Armament Haki supports internal destruction, ranged attacks, and exceptionally durable defenses 143.
- Internal destruction: Sends Haki beneath a metal surface to break its structure rather than merely damaging its exterior 142 143.
- Projected attacks: Releases solid black fist imprints that curve around targets and overwhelm Boer’s electromagnetic shields 143.
- Defensive coating: Covers individual limbs or his body; Boer describes its activation as nearly instinctive 167 228.
- Contract-enhanced red Armament: Penetrates Kaido’s scales, injures Linlin’s internal organs, and absorbs or disperses powerful incoming blows 317 320.
- Limits: Boer can briefly interrupt its generation through bioelectric interference, while sufficiently powerful magnetic blades and high-energy heat can penetrate its protection 144 167 168.
Conqueror’s Haki
Garp can exert overwhelming pressure and compress Conqueror’s Haki into his attacks 83 142.
- Releases pressure strong enough to make the tearoom’s lights flicker during his confrontation with Boer 83.
- Coats punches in red-and-black arcs and compresses his Haki into a solid, crystalline-looking shell 142 143.
- Combines Conqueror’s and Armament Haki into a destructive eruption capable of shredding the metal tentacles restraining him 143.
Observation Haki
Garp’s perception enables precise evasions and rapid threat detection 143 144.
- Navigates dense metal spikes with minute changes in posture and direction 143.
- Detects an energy rampage beneath the ice in time to seize Aokiji and retreat 144.
- Perceives soldiers’ fear, exhaustion, and final thoughts across the Marineford battlefield 320.
- Can be hindered by Boer’s blinding light and electromagnetic interference; restricted vision contributes to his being burned during their Bernia battle 144 167.
Life Return and Ultimate Battle Stance
Garp’s ultimate stance merges bodily control, Life Return, Conqueror’s coating, and the pinnacle of Armament Haki/Ryuo 168.
- Produces nearly solid dark-red currents from his pores, wounds, and breath.
- Slows bleeding and shows signs of repairing shallow injuries.
- Is interrupted before its full offensive capabilities are demonstrated when Bellemere calls the fighters back for dinner 168.
High-Speed Movement
Garp combines Geppo and Flash Step with explosive leg strength 142.
- Crosses fifty meters almost instantly, leaving a vacuum channel and sonic boom behind him 142.
- Uses Geppo and the recoil of his punches to maneuver around Boer’s giant armor 143.
- Runs across the sea through rapid, light steps that produce only small ripples 168.
Float-Float Fruit
Garp integrates the Float-Float Fruit in Mary Geoise before revealing his restored form at Marineford 316.
- Flies and hovers freely 316 320.
- Changes direction without regard for inertia, allowing immediate attacks from unexpected angles 317 320.
- Combines aerial acceleration with his physical strength and Haki to increase the force of kicks and charges 320.
Abyss Contract
Garp’s contract with Imu supplies life force from Sunlight Tree Eve, restoring his youth and greatly amplifying his combat power 316.
- Purpose: Accepted to secure Ace’s survival 312.
- Cost: Boer describes Garp as having traded his life to the World Government’s master for power 316.
- Control: Connects him to Imu’s Will Network, pushing him toward the World Government’s intended slaughter of the Emperors 320.
- Resistance: The suffering of ordinary Marines restores Garp’s independent will, although the contract and its power remain active 320.
Named Techniques
| Technique | Demonstrated use |
|---|---|
| Fist of Love / Love Iron Fist | His signature affectionate name for devastating punches; a concentrated version splits the head of Boer’s Sovereign Armor from within 83 143. |
| Bone Fist: Meteor | A high-speed, Haki-coated strike; a projected barrage is also demonstrated under the Meteor name 142 143. |
| Fist Bone: Ascending Dragon | An upward punch that counters and destroys the giant armor’s fist 142. |
| Fist Bone: Galaxy Split–Falling Star | A descending strike launched from more than a hundred meters above, coordinated with Aokiji’s ice attack 142 143. |
| Fist Bone: Meteor Shower | A furious barrage of solid black fist imprints that shatters Boer’s shield and dents his armor 143. |
| Fist Bone: Meteorite Cross Impact | An aerial opening attack producing a black-and-red cross-shaped shock wave 167. |
| Bone Fist: Sea Suppression | Opens his defense against the Four Emperors’ combined assault by shattering Whitebeard’s tsunami; follow-up blows disperse the remaining attacks 316. |
Equipment / Weapons / Items
- Custom brass knuckles — Made by Boer. Achieve the same Armament coating effect with a little over half the previous effort and improve impact transmission and concentration 85.
- Dog-Head Warship — Garp’s distinctive flagship, commanded with the assistance of his adjutant Bogard 83 167 223.
- Thrown projectiles — Uses cannonballs as an opening greeting and improvises Haki-coated concrete projectiles to protect Aokiji 82 144.
Relationships
- Monkey D. Dragon — His son and the Revolutionary Army’s leader. Garp conceals Boer’s early disclosure of their cooperation and later openly rejects treating family ties as grounds for condemnation 84 85 128.
- Monkey D. Luffy — His biological grandson. Garp wants him to become a Marine despite Luffy’s ambition to become Pirate King, and later entrusts his care to Boer 208 225 309.
- Ace — His adopted grandson and Roger’s son. Garp protects his identity, attempts to bring him into the Marines, and ultimately sacrifices his freedom to secure his survival 128 170 312 316.
- Aaron Ball / Boer — Initially a target of official pressure, later an opponent, friend, and trusted guardian of his grandsons. Garp acknowledges both his strength and his principles, while Boer promises to intervene if the Five Elders betray their agreement over Ace 76 195 223 312.
- Sengoku — Longtime friend and Fleet Admiral. Their familiar arguments coexist with major disagreements over justice; at Marineford, Sengoku tacitly permits Garp to follow his conscience 76 85 128 320.
- Tsuru — Fellow recruit and comrade of more than fifty years. She recognizes the principles beneath his careless exterior and watches over Ace during Garp’s crisis 85 310.
- Kuzan / Aokiji — His accomplished pupil, whom he regards as a son. They fight in close coordination, and Aokiji’s injury provokes Garp’s furious counterattack 85 143.
- Nico Robin — Receives Garp’s personal apology for Ohara’s destruction and her years of persecution; he acknowledges wrongdoing without claiming to represent the institution 83.
- Bellemere — Challenges his treatment of Ace and Luffy and successfully interrupts his escalating duel with Boer by calling everyone to dinner 168 170.
- Bogard — His adjutant, who carries out his urgent orders and supports him when he returns gravely injured 165 167 169.
- Imu — Grants Garp power through the abyss contract while attempting to control his actions through the Will Network 316 320.
Story Role / Major Arcs
Bernia Visit and Ohara Apology
Marine Headquarters sends Garp to deliver a warning after Cipher Pol’s failed attempt to seize Robin threatens cooperation with Boer. Tsuru selects him because his reputation can communicate force without committing the Marines to an immediate attack 76.
Garp arrives with cannonballs and tests Boer with Haki-coated punches. During their subsequent meeting, Boer confronts him over Ohara. Garp condemns the indiscriminate bombardment, the destruction of the civilian ship, and Robin’s persecution, then lowers his head and apologizes personally 82 83.
The encounter leaves him unusually subdued on his return to Headquarters. He withholds Boer’s disclosure about the Revolutionary Army while reporting the generous payments to his crew and the effectiveness of his new brass knuckles 84 85.
Fighting Boer in Bernia
After Boer kills Saint Roschard, Garp and Aokiji move to stop him. Their coordinated assault targets the joints and core of his giant armor, culminating in Garp launching Aokiji as a Haki-infused ice spear through the construct 141 142 143.
Boer remains active after the armor freezes. Garp protects Aokiji during the renewed fighting, suffers severe burns from a high-energy attack, and detects the dangerous energy buildup beneath the ice in time to retreat with his pupil 144.
East Blue Confrontation and Family Reckoning
Boer takes Ace and Luffy and demands that Garp meet him alone. Fearing revenge against his family, Garp races back toward the East Blue and fights Boer on an uninhabited island 165 167.
Boer severely injures him and knocks him down. Garp begins activating his ultimate Haki stance, but Bellemere ends the confrontation before another round. Boer subsequently treats his injuries, estimating that full recovery will take a month or two 168 170.
Bellemere’s criticism forces Garp to confront the boys’ insecurity and lack of care. His proposal to take Ace to Marine Headquarters fails when Ace refuses 170.
Marine Stabilization and Renewed Cooperation
During the loss of contact with Mary Geoise, Sengoku orders Garp back to hold Marineford, explicitly relying on his reputation to reassure the Marines and restrain internal dissent 181.
Garp later supports coexistence with Boer, explaining that Boer respects ordinary Marines despite condemning their institution’s subordination to the World Government. He also takes part in a teaching match against Boer-controlled Luffy and asks Boer to help prevent another war. When Boer instead proposes reclaiming land from the sea, Garp carries that offer back to Mary Geoise 195 224 225.
Ace’s Capture and the Abyss Contract
Ace’s capture creates a political crisis because the Five Elders fear that executing him could alienate both Garp and Boer and fracture Marine Headquarters. Garp is left alone with a blank resignation letter, caught between his office and his grandson 309 310.
He ultimately decides to sign an abyss contract with Imu to save Ace. Before doing so, he asks Boer to take Ace away if the Five Elders break their promise 312.
Marineford War
Garp reveals his restored youth when the Four Emperors attack Marineford. He breaks apart their opening assault through successive Haki-powered blows, then uses the Float-Float Fruit and amplified strength to dominate Kaido and Linlin 316 317.
Imu’s contract pushes him toward killing the Emperors, but the deaths and final thoughts of Marine soldiers restore his independent will. He quietly assures Whitebeard that Ace will live 320.
Once Ace reaches Marco safely, Garp and Whitebeard both feel relief. Garp resumes the battle with his familiar grin, while Whitebeard ultimately dies standing with the marks of Garp’s punches across his body 321 322.
