Arc 5Konoha’s Three Hokage

Konoha split under the rival leadership of Hiruzen, Danzo, and Minato as Sunagakure’s forces threatened the village. Danzo used the crisis and Hashirama’s return to draw Tsunade and Jiraiya toward his command, while Jiraiya remained undecided.

  • Toyotomi Yinglang recruited workers for Sunagakure as Hiruzen Sarutobi proposed Minato Namikaze for Hokage and anonymous leaflets stirred unrest in Konoha.
  • Danzo rallied Gekko Wuzang and other clans into the Sarutobi Encirclement Network, while battlefield losses and invasion threats drove Konoha’s factions toward war.
  • Hiruzen, Danzo, and Minato accepted the Wartime Partition Agreement, dividing command of Konoha’s forces among themselves as Jiraiya, Tsunade, and Orochimaru rejected Hiruzen’s appeal for help.
  • Toyotomi Yinglang expanded the Martial Arts Hall and his empire while Sakura Haruno confronted evidence of Konoha’s abuses and Tobirama Senju imposed oversight on the Hall.
  • Orochimaru summoned Hashirama Senju and Tobirama Senju, and Danzo publicly accused Hiruzen’s clan and Tobirama’s succession choices of causing Konoha’s crisis.
  • Hashirama and Tobirama witnessed Sunagakure’s coordinated armored assault as Danzo strengthened his army and ordered Root to seize sacrifices for Orochimaru’s experiments.
  • Danzo sent Orochimaru to recruit Tsunade and Jiraiya by appealing to their duty and ties to Konoha.
  • Hashirama asked Tsunade to treat wounded Konoha ninja and she agreed to follow Orochimaru, while Jiraiya was left shaken after Orochimaru challenged him to join the war or be regarded as a missing-nin.
Chapters 101–125 Vol. 2 Read

Ch. 101Talent and turmoil

Toyotomi Yinglang launched a talent-recruitment drive to strengthen Sunagakure’s research and production, while Hiruzen Sarutobi struggled to contain growing unrest in Konoha. After Hiruzen proposed Minato Namikaze as his successor, leaflets exposing clan casualties and resource allocations further eroded confidence in the Hokage and his chosen successor.

  • Toyotomi Yinglang ordered Sunagakure to recruit skilled workers and researchers, offering special-jōnin-level treatment, rewards, and support to families relocating from the Land of Wind.
  • Minato Namikaze told Hiruzen Sarutobi that Danzo’s Root had taken custody of the unconscious blond boy brought by Sai and was refusing to hand him over.
  • Hiruzen Sarutobi, alarmed by Danzo’s influence and rumors against him, proposed that Minato succeed him as the Fourth Hokage.
  • Minato Namikaze hesitated to accept and urged Hiruzen to investigate Rōran and address Konoha’s internal divisions first.
  • An Anbu ninja reported that anonymous leaflets detailing clan war casualties and resource allocations were spreading through Konoha, along with doubts that Minato would change the existing order.

Ch. 102A blood oath of alliance

At a secret Root base, Danzo used a list of Sarutobi Clan strength to unite resentful clan representatives against Hiruzen. They swore a blood oath and formed the Sarutobi Encirclement Network to remove Hiruzen from the Hokage position.

  • Gekko Wuzang and other clan representatives condemned Hiruzen after seeing evidence of the Sarutobi Clan's hidden strength and contrasting it with their own clans' losses.
  • Danzo argued that Hiruzen had exploited the other clans to enrich the Sarutobi Clan and offered them a choice to join him.
  • Gekko Wuzang, the Ishikawa Clan, the Kusanagi Clan, and other representatives pledged to follow Danzo.
  • Danzo and the clan representatives cut their palms, mixed their blood into a bowl, and drank the bloodied water to seal their alliance.
  • Danzo declared the Sarutobi Encirclement Network established with the goal of removing Hiruzen and stripping the Sarutobi Clan of its power.

Ch. 103Battle armor's debut and the countdown to war

Hiruzen Sarutobi deployed three thousand Sarutobi Chunin to hold Konoha amid the struggle with Danzo, while Sunagakure’s armored warriors routed a larger Konoha force at the Land of Rivers. Warned that war could begin ahead of schedule, Danzo ordered preparations to move against Hiruzen and went to seek Minato Namikaze; Toyotomi Yinglang prepared to test an even larger battle armor prototype.

  • Hiruzen Sarutobi brought three thousand Sarutobi Chunin into Konoha to strengthen his hold on the village, while Minato Namikaze continued to resist being appointed Fourth Hokage amid the internal crisis.
  • Twenty Sunagakure warriors wearing battle armor led five hundred ninja to rout fifteen hundred Konoha Ninja at the Land of Rivers, and the battlefield report spread to Konoha.
  • Sai warned Danzo that the Third Shinobi World War might begin before Konoha Year 47, prompting Danzo to fear that Hiruzen Sarutobi could use war to consolidate power.
  • Danzo ordered the clans in the encirclement to gather and prepare equipment, alerted the Aburame, Kurama, and Inuzuka clans, and set out to meet Minato Namikaze.
  • Toyotomi Yinglang reviewed the battle armor and Gene Serum reports and turned his attention to a larger prototype for further testing.

Ch. 104Hokage by the dozen

Minato confronted Danzo over his treatment of Naruto and Danzo’s claim to be Konoha’s rightful Hokage, then faced a proposal from the Ino-Shika-Cho clans to become the Fifth Hokage in a three-Hokage arrangement. He was left weighing their support and conditions against the risk of joining Konoha’s political struggle.

  • Minato told Danzo that Yamato had revealed Naruto was Minato’s future son, and accused Danzo of capturing and controlling him.
  • Danzo displayed the Daimyō’s decree appointing him Hokage and urged Minato to abandon his loyalty to Hiruzen and join him.
  • Shikaku Nara, Chōshū Akimichi, and Inoichi Yamanaka offered Minato the support of their clans and proposed that Hiruzen, Danzo, and Minato share power as the Third, Fourth, and Fifth Hokage.
  • Shikaku explained that the arrangement would prevent civil war while Konoha faced Sunagakure, and asked Minato to govern for the public good if he became Hokage.
  • Minato recognized the proposal’s risks and asked the clan leaders what conditions they expected in return.

Ch. 105A speech that tore everything apart

Shimura Danzō used the Land of Fire Daimyō’s edict and a public speech to claim the Hokage title and accuse Hiruzen Sarutobi of corruption, Sakumo Hatake’s death, and Konoha’s decline. The crowd’s trust in Hiruzen collapsed, leaving Konoha on the brink of civil war as Sunagakure’s threat loomed.

  • Shimura Danzō displayed the Daimyō’s edict, declared Hiruzen Sarutobi stripped of office, and proclaimed himself the new Hokage.
  • Shimura Danzō accused Hiruzen Sarutobi of driving Sakumo Hatake to suicide through public pressure and threats against Kakashi.
  • Shimura Danzō blamed Hiruzen Sarutobi for Konoha’s stagnation and contrasted it with Sunagakure’s development of Battle Armor.
  • Hiruzen Sarutobi suppressed his anger as the crowd turned against him, while Minato Namikaze and Kushina Uzumaki silently condemned him.
  • Shikaku Nara, Chōshū Akimichi, and Inoichi Yamanaka considered using Minato Namikaze as a buffer between Hiruzen Sarutobi and the clans.
  • The crowd’s faith in Hiruzen Sarutobi and Konoha’s leadership collapsed, pushing the village toward division and civil war.

Ch. 106One Village, Three Shadows

Reports of Sunagakure's destruction of Konoha's southern garrison and Kumogakure's northern mobilization forced Konoha's rival factions into a wartime power-sharing agreement. Hiruzen Sarutobi and Shimura Danzō departed to command separate fronts, while Minato Namikaze became Fifth Hokage and remained in Konoha to manage defense and logistics.

  • A bloodied jonin reported that Sunagakure had wiped out the fifteen-hundred-strong Land of Rivers garrison and Kumogakure had massed at least five thousand troops near the Land of Hot Water.
  • Shikaku Nara proposed that Hiruzen Sarutobi retain the Third Hokage title and command the north while Danzo became Fourth Hokage and commanded the south.
  • Hiruzen Sarutobi raised concerns about supply sabotage, and Shikaku Nara proposed appointing a Fifth Hokage to oversee headquarters, logistics, and village defense.
  • The three factions negotiated and signed the Wartime Partition Agreement, accepting Minato Namikaze as Fifth Hokage with backing from the Ino-Shika-Cho Clans.
  • Hiruzen Sarutobi led five thousand ninja north, and Shimura Danzō led four thousand ninja south to confront the invading forces.
  • Minato Namikaze remained in Konoha with a small force to defend the village, support both armies, and balance the rival Hokage.

Ch. 107The Sannin drift apart

At a hot spring inn, Jiraiya confronted Tsunade and Orochimaru over Konoha’s division among three Hokage, but both rejected his appeals to loyalty and the Will of Fire. Orochimaru and Tsunade left together, while Jiraiya remained alone, questioning everything he had believed.

  • Jiraiya denounced Konoha’s three Hokage and urged Tsunade and Orochimaru to help Hiruzen Sarutobi.
  • Tsunade dismissed Konoha’s troubles and blamed its leaders for a corrupt system, saying her losses had left her without hope for the village.
  • Orochimaru told Jiraiya that he owed Hiruzen no debt and cited his future role in killing their teacher as a reason to leave him alone.
  • Orochimaru argued that Danzo’s leadership had earned popular support through Root’s opportunities and benefits, while Hiruzen’s authority was fading.
  • Tsunade agreed to leave with Orochimaru, and the two departed the inn together.
  • Jiraiya stayed behind, shaken and questioning his faith in Konoha, Hiruzen, and the future.

Ch. 108Ruins beneath the peering mirror and a hundred elites

Toyotomi Yinglang used the Peering Mirror Technique to observe Konoha’s power struggle and watched the village fracture into three rival factions. After learning that Sasori had completed a force of one hundred elite jonin-level serum warriors in battle armor, he placed them on maximum combat readiness and hinted at his next move.

  • Toyotomi Yinglang used the Peering Mirror Technique to observe Hiruzen Sarutobi, Shimura Danzō, and Minato Namikaze leading three rival armies in Konoha.
  • Toyotomi Yinglang judged the Uchiha Clan indecisive for splitting its small forces between the northern and southern armies without committing to a side.
  • Sasori brought Toyotomi Yinglang a report confirming the production of one hundred elite jonin-level combatants equipped with Basic Type-I battle armor.
  • Toyotomi Yinglang ordered Sasori to place all one hundred fighters on maximum combat readiness and said he had chosen their missions.

Ch. 109The twisted vessel

Danzo manipulated Naruto into viewing the coming war as a path to power, while exposing him to Konoha’s buried crimes and deepening his doubts about Hiruzen and his own past. As Naruto’s anger and ambition gathered inside the seal, a dark counterpart began to take shape, drawing the Nine-Tails’ interest.

  • Danzo urged Naruto to protect Konoha on the southern battlefield and saw Naruto begin to anticipate earning recognition and power through war.
  • Sai reflected that handing Naruto over to Danzo had led to his physical and psychological reconstruction, but hoped Naruto’s usefulness would keep him safe from harsher treatment.
  • Naruto learned about Konoha’s secret crimes and the Sarutobi Clan’s wartime conduct, while Sai’s revelations about Naruto’s childhood and inheritance fueled his suspicions of Hiruzen.
  • As Naruto’s anger and doubts rose, Asura’s lingering will dampened his emotions, leaving him fearful that even his dream of becoming Hokage might not be his own.
  • Naruto’s suppressed anger, sorrow, doubt, and ambition coalesced into a dark presence within the sealing space, and the Nine-Tails sensed it and sent chakra toward it.

Ch. 110Ripples of Homecoming

Toyotomi Yinglang returned to the Main World with Sakura Haruno, and Liuli learned that her counterparts’ father had been murdered and her other self had died young in Shinobi World No. 1. Liuli awakened a Mangekyō Sharingan and vowed to correct that world, while Yinglang redirected her wrath toward its eventual collapse and declared that its Uchiha would no longer be protected by Elder Xuan’s promise.

  • Toyotomi Yinglang returned to the Main World with Sakura Haruno and introduced her to Liuli as his new maid.
  • Liuli read that Elder Xuan had died in an ambush and that her counterpart had died at nineteen, then awakened the Reverse Vortex Blade Array Mangekyō Sharingan.
  • Liuli vowed to correct Shinobi World No. 1, but Toyotomi Yinglang said he had already set Konoha on a path toward collapse and prolonged suffering.
  • Liuli threatened Sakura Haruno, and Toyotomi Yinglang registered her as a Toyotomi Clan ninja and assigned her as his personal attendant.
  • Toyotomi Yinglang told Liuli that Elder Xuan’s protection applied only in their world, leaving the Uchiha in Shinobi World No. 1 to face the consequences of their own actions and that world’s rules.

Ch. 111The soil of contradiction

Sakura Haruno observed the Toyotomi Clan’s plans and Konoha’s divisions, then listened as Toyotomi Yinglang challenged the ideals and institutions she had trusted. The chapter left her questioning what Konoha truly was and where she should go next.

  • Toyotomi clanspeople celebrated plans to establish a Martial Arts Hall that would train clan members and recruit talented commoner children.
  • Sakura Haruno watched the Toyotomi compound and Ninja Academy, concluding that major clans kept their most promising children and core training within their own ranks.
  • Sakura connected the Toyotomi Clan’s growing influence to Uchiha members changing allegiance or aligning with Konoha’s leadership, and saw the Uchiha as divided and declining.
  • Toyotomi Yinglang argued that the Will of Fire concealed contradictions rooted in clan interests, inequality, and the gap between ideals and power.
  • After Yinglang left, Sakura sank beneath the veranda and began questioning Konoha and her own place in it.

Ch. 112Cured pork, eggs, and a closed loop

Sakura Haruno watched the Toyotomi Martial Arts Hall recruit children and learned how its fees, training, and mission support built a lasting bond between students and the Toyotomi Clan. Toyotomi Yinglang left her wondering whether those the clan supported would risk their lives for it when it was in danger.

  • Sakura Haruno watched families register children at the Toyotomi Martial Arts Hall by paying six years' tuition with ten strips of cured pork or equivalent goods.
  • Toyotomi Yinglang explained to Sakura why the payment screened for families able to support a child through training and how the Hall provided tools, lessons, facilities, meals, and a boiled egg each day.
  • A poor boy offered a hatchet and a wounded rabbit, and the bookkeeper accepted them as partial payment while recording the rest as debt he could repay by chopping wood or providing game.
  • Toyotomi Yinglang described how the clan would arrange missions, assess and promote capable students, and offer better opportunities to those who continued working with it.
  • Sakura realized that the Hall tied students' training, advancement, and careers to the Toyotomi Clan, and Toyotomi Yinglang asked whether they would fight for it in a crisis.

Ch. 113Reversal and Forceful Prohibition

Tobirama Senju learned that Toyotomi Yinglang’s Martial Arts Hall was recruiting and training ninja outside Konoha’s systems, but found no clear rule allowing him to stop it. As Yinglang prepared to answer Tobirama’s summons, Toyotomi Liuli demonstrated her newly awakened Mangekyō abilities, Reversal and Forceful Prohibition, and accompanied him to the Hokage Building.

  • Tobirama Senju reviewed reports on the Martial Arts Hall’s recruitment, independent missions, and internal Chunin assessments, and concluded that Toyotomi Yinglang was building a private system of loyal ninja.
  • Tobirama Senju summoned Toyotomi Yinglang to the Hokage Building to discuss border supplies and civilian missions.
  • Toyotomi Liuli demonstrated that her left eye could reverse a target’s process and her right eye could temporarily prohibit a target from using a chosen ability or action.
  • An Anbu arrived with Tobirama’s summons, and Liuli insisted on accompanying Yinglang.
  • Toyotomi Yinglang replenished Liuli’s strength with dragon essence power, then left with her to meet Tobirama.

Ch. 114Forehead protectors and unwritten rules

Toyotomi Yinglang defended the Martial Arts Hall’s recruitment, missions, and internal Chunin assessments as measures taken for Konoha, while Liuli openly displayed her Mangekyō Sharingan before Tobirama Senju. Tobirama ordered the Hall to submit records for village oversight, but after the Toyotomis left, he resolved to make clear who controlled Konoha’s rules.

  • Toyotomi Yinglang and Liuli met Tobirama Senju in his office, where Liuli displayed her activated Mangekyō Sharingan.
  • Tobirama questioned Yinglang about the Martial Arts Hall recruiting commoners, accepting missions independently, and granting Chunin qualifications.
  • Yinglang argued that the Hall supplemented the Ninja Academy, served communities, and trained Konoha ninjas, pointing to their Konoha forehead protectors.
  • Tobirama ordered the Hall to submit its rosters and syllabus to the Anbu, report completed missions, and send internal Chunin assessments to the Jonin council for review.
  • Yinglang agreed to Tobirama’s oversight requirements, and he and Liuli left the office.
  • Tobirama brooded over the Toyotomis’ growing influence and vowed to establish who decided Konoha’s rules.

Ch. 115The Great British Empire

Great Britain became the Great British Empire in a ceremony that named Toyotomi Yinglang Emperor Shiwu and elevated Yutian to Imperial Grand Duke Zhenyuan. Afterward, Toyotomi Yinglang gave Yutian gene serum and tasked him with preparing for a future in which enhanced citizens would replace slavery.

  • Yutian announced the empire’s new name, Toyotomi Yinglang’s imperial title, and Yutian’s appointment as Imperial Grand Duke Zhenyuan.
  • The army and people celebrated the new empire and honored Toyotomi Yinglang and Yutian during the investiture ceremony.
  • Toyotomi Yinglang told Yutian that slavery was an inefficient, temporary foundation for the empire and would eventually be abolished.
  • Toyotomi Yinglang gave Yutian basic Gene Serum, which could enhance physical abilities and extend lifespan, and asked him to test its applicability.
  • Yutian accepted the serum and pledged to advance research and guide the empire’s social transition at a steady pace.

Ch. 116Living space

Yutian warned Toyotomi Yinglang that population growth could eventually outstrip the British Continent’s resources, but Toyotomi argued that the empire needed people more than land and ordered policies to expand and strengthen its population. Yutian left to draft an order encouraging childbirth and immigration, accepting that future shortages would be met through expansion.

  • Yutian raised concerns that the British Continent’s limited land could not support the empire’s future population.
  • Toyotomi Yinglang pointed out that the empire’s population was about 337,000, fewer than the roughly 500,000 native inhabitants recorded before conquest.
  • Toyotomi said the empire’s priority was to recruit loyal people, train them, and prepare for expansion rather than worry about distant land shortages.
  • Toyotomi ordered rewards for families with more children and selective immigration of healthy outsiders from the Old Continent.
  • Yutian agreed to draft an Order to Encourage Childbearing and Population Immigration and prioritize infant care, education, and training.

Ch. 117The evil of ninja

Toyotomi Yinglang showed Sakura Haruno a genuine mission file documenting Konoha Anbu’s massacre of Black Marsh Village and explained the political calculations behind it. Sakura broke down as her beliefs about ninja, the Daimyō, and the Will of Fire collapsed, leaving her to question what she would fight to protect.

  • Toyotomi Yinglang gave Sakura Haruno an old mission scroll while she sat in the Toyotomi clan courtyard.
  • Sakura read that a Konoha Anbu squad had been ordered to kill Black Marsh Village’s men, burn its homes and granaries, and disguise the massacre as a bandit attack.
  • Toyotomi Yinglang confirmed the mission was genuine and explained that the Daimyō had used it to eliminate a potential uprising and keep Konoha’s public standing in check.
  • Sakura rejected Yinglang’s account at first, then retched and sobbed as she struggled with what the mission revealed about ninja and the Will of Fire.
  • Toyotomi Yinglang urged Sakura to decide what she truly wanted to protect before she wielded a kunai again, then left her alone in the courtyard.

Ch. 118Konoha now stood divided in three, and Danzo planned to resurrect the Second

Sasori reported that the Land of Fire Daimyō was deliberately maintaining Konoha’s three-way division, while Danzo backed Orochimaru’s human experiments and planned to use Impure World Reincarnation to summon Tobirama Senju. Toyotomi Yinglang ordered Sasori to monitor the plan and have their allies provoke Danzo’s intended public trial of the Second Hokage, leaving Sakura Haruno overwhelmed by the news.

  • Sasori told Toyotomi Yinglang that the Land of Fire Daimyō was funding and institutionalizing separate systems for Hiruzen Sarutobi’s Northern Army, Danzo’s Southern Army, and Minato Namikaze’s headquarters.
  • Sasori reported that Orochimaru had joined Danzo’s camp and was refining Impure World Reincarnation while conducting human experiments for an undying army.
  • Sasori explained that Danzo planned to summon Tobirama Senju and publicly denounce him to establish Danzo’s authority and discredit the old Konoha.
  • Toyotomi Yinglang ordered Sasori to monitor Orochimaru’s experiments and Danzo’s plan, and to have their allies encourage the ceremony while leaking news of it to Hiruzen Sarutobi and Minato Namikaze.
  • Sakura Haruno collapsed in despair as she listened to the report and instructions.

Ch. 119The reaper of the Pure Land

Hagoromo Otsutsuki investigated the living world after an inexplicable sneeze and revealed that he treated the Pure Land as a source of chakra and souls. He chose to let Konoha summon Hashirama Senju and Tobirama Senju more easily, while the dragon vein kept Sunagakure and Toyotomi Yinglang hidden from his sight.

  • Hagoromo Otsutsuki sensed a disturbance after sneezing and inspected his Pure Land and the living world through his Rinnegan.
  • Hagoromo Otsutsuki reviewed his observation points at Mount Myōboku and Konoha, and credited Hashirama Senju with helping him increase shinobi deaths and harvest souls.
  • Hagoromo Otsutsuki learned that Orochimaru had used Impure World Reincarnation to summon Hashirama Senju and Tobirama Senju, but held back from stopping the forbidden technique.
  • Hagoromo Otsutsuki failed to see into Sunagakure because the dragon vein disrupted his vision, leaving Toyotomi Yinglang unknown to him.
  • Hagoromo Otsutsuki loosened his restrictions on the Senju brothers so Konoha could summon them more easily, expecting the resulting sacrifices to nourish the Pure Land.

Ch. 120The summoned "ideal"

Orochimaru and Danzo summoned Hashirama Senju through Impure World Reincarnation, but Hashirama was horrified by the human experiments and resisted Orochimaru’s control. Danzo then pretended to be a grief-stricken patriot and blamed Konoha’s crisis on Hiruzen, leaving Hashirama uncertain whom to believe.

  • Orochimaru completed the summoning of Hashirama Senju, estimating that he could wield about half his former strength.
  • Hashirama saw the remains of human experiments and demanded to know whether Danzo and Orochimaru were rogue shinobi impersonating Konoha ninja.
  • Orochimaru told Danzo that Hashirama’s will was resisting the technique and that full control could damage his soul or cause a backlash.
  • Danzo dropped to his knees, claimed to be Tobirama’s former student, and described Konoha’s division, Sunagakure’s monsters, and the danger of invasion.
  • When Hashirama questioned Danzo’s changed appearance, Danzo blamed his injuries and hardship on Hiruzen and claimed he had become Fourth Hokage to save Konoha.
  • Hashirama weighed Danzo’s account against the evil laboratory before him and struggled to decide what to believe.

Ch. 121An indictment of his teacher

Danzo summoned Tobirama Senju before the Southern Army and used a prepared book of evidence to publicly accuse him of choosing Hiruzen Sarutobi and creating institutions that led to Konoha’s decline. Tobirama was bound by Orochimaru’s control technique and could only listen as Danzo began his public trial.

  • Hashirama Senju questioned whether Konoha had truly fallen into crisis, while Danzo persuaded Orochimaru to summon and control Tobirama Senju.
  • Danzo ordered Orochimaru to move the summoning to the Southern Army’s parade ground so he could confront Tobirama publicly.
  • Orochimaru summoned Tobirama before the assembled army and clan representatives, binding his actions and preventing him from resisting or undoing the technique.
  • Tobirama asked Danzo where he was, what had happened to Konoha, and why Hashirama had also been summoned.
  • Danzo presented a book listing 732 alleged crimes by the Sarutobi Clan and accused Tobirama of causing Konoha’s division by choosing Hiruzen Sarutobi as his successor.

Ch. 122A conversation between the dead

After Danzo’s public humiliation of the reanimated Hokage, Hashirama and Tobirama grieved over how Konoha had changed and how their successors had failed them. They resolved to investigate the village’s present crises before deciding what to do with their forced second lives.

  • Danzo ended his public denunciation, ordered Orochimaru to reinforce his control over Hashirama and Tobirama, and had them taken to a sealed tent.
  • Tobirama condemned Hiruzen Sarutobi, Shimura Danzō, Mitokado Homura, Utatane Koharu, and Torifu Akimichi for failing Konoha, while recalling that Kagami Uchiha had died early.
  • Hashirama realized that at least two more great wars had followed his death and questioned whether his efforts to build peace and found Konoha had been in vain.
  • Tobirama urged Hashirama to set aside the question of right and wrong and investigate Sunagakure’s threat, Konoha’s factions, Danzo and Orochimaru’s plans, and the force that had enabled their summoning.
  • Hashirama agreed that the brothers should first learn how Konoha had reached its current state.

Ch. 123"Equality"

Sunagakure’s armored army overwhelmed Konoha’s Southern Army until Hashirama Senju intervened with Wood Release, only to be countered by disciplined evasive tactics. Danzo responded by ordering mass conscription for Impure World Reincarnation and imposing a ruthless merit-based system, leaving Jiraiya questioning whether Danzo’s coercive methods had made Konoha’s forces more united than the Will of Fire ever had.

  • Sunagakure’s armored assault teams tore through Konoha’s defensive lines, and Tobirama Senju recognized their strength, equipment, and coordination as unprecedented.
  • Hashirama Senju used Wood Release to crush a squad and slow the advance, but Sunagakure’s troops dispersed, obstructed the wood golem, and continued their organized retreat.
  • After the battle, Tobirama Senju contrasted Sunagakure’s discipline with Konoha’s division, while Hashirama Senju could only sigh.
  • Danzo ordered Orochimaru to reincarnate powerful fighters and commanded Root to seize suitable sacrifices across the southern Land of Fire, while opening army resources and techniques to ninjas in exchange for merit.
  • Jiraiya learned that Danzo’s coercive system had reduced infighting and improved coordination, and he struggled with doubts about the Will of Fire and his teacher’s path.

Ch. 124Servility and coercion

In the Southern Army Headquarters, Danzo planned to exploit Jiraiya’s and Tsunade’s loyalty and emotional attachments to draw them back into Konoha’s war against Sunagakure. He sent Orochimaru to find them, intending to use Hashirama’s reanimated presence to pressure Tsunade and guilt Jiraiya into joining the army before the next battle.

  • Danzo asked Orochimaru where Jiraiya and Tsunade were and learned they might both be near Tanzaku Town.
  • Danzo explained that threats or rewards would not win their genuine submission, so he would manipulate their sense of duty and emotional ties.
  • Danzo ordered Orochimaru to bring the reanimated Hashirama to Tsunade and tell her that Konoha and her grandfather needed her medical skills.
  • Danzo planned for Orochimaru to tell Jiraiya that Hashirama had returned to fight and that staying away would make him seem like a rogue ninja.
  • Orochimaru agreed to carry out the plan, and Danzo demanded that the Sannin appear reunited under his command before the next battle.

Ch. 125Forced into service

Orochimaru forced Tsunade and Jiraiya to confront Konoha’s wartime crisis by invoking their responsibility to Hashirama Senju and the wounded. Tsunade agreed to join the southern front, while Jiraiya was left reeling from Orochimaru’s ultimatum.

  • Hashirama Senju visited Tsunade and asked her to help the wounded Konoha ninja on the southern front.
  • Orochimaru told Tsunade that Danzo had promised her control of the Southern Army’s medical resources, and she agreed to pack her medical supplies and follow him.
  • Orochimaru found Jiraiya drinking in a tavern and revealed that Hashirama Senju had returned from the Pure Land to fight Sunagakure.
  • When Jiraiya condemned Hashirama’s summoning, Orochimaru challenged him to either help Konoha or be remembered as a missing-nin.
  • Jiraiya stood in the silent tavern, shaken and ashamed, as Orochimaru left and the choice of whether to follow remained before him.
Arc 5 of 23
