Background / History

Academy Prodigy and Early Defeats

Sasuke enters the story as an admired Academy genius who has stood at the forefront of Konoha’s younger generation since enrolling. His ambitions include avenging his clan’s massacre by defeating Itachi and restoring the Uchiha 6 16 36.

Lin Chen’s sudden rise displaces him as the center of attention. After Lin Chen secretly plunders his bloodline potential, Sasuke experiences stagnant growth, sluggish chakra circulation, and soreness in his eyes. He suspects Lin Chen is responsible and challenges him to reclaim his standing 4 6.

Their first duel ends with Sasuke’s newly awakened Sharingan stripped away. He vows revenge, but a second Heavenly Dao-assisted awakening produces the same outcome: Lin Chen drains the borrowed power and defeats him immediately 7 8 15.

Team 7 and the Land of Waves

Sasuke joins Naruto Uzumaki and Sakura Haruno on Team 7 under Kakashi Hatake, with Lin Chen temporarily added to the squad. During the bell test, his shuriken and taijutsu combination cannot touch Kakashi; the team passes after Lin Chen takes both bells 19.

On the Land of Waves mission, Sasuke helps protect Tazuna and intercepts Haku’s ice needles. Subsequent encounters expose his limits: his shuriken cannot penetrate Armament Haki, his Great Fireball is weakened in the warehouse ambush, and his attacks barely damage a mutated sea beast. Lin Chen’s effortless victories over these enemies deepen his fear that ordinary training cannot close their gap 22 23 24 25 26.

Rejection of the Orthodox Path

After Lin Chen reaches Kage-level strength, Sasuke trains with little sleep or rest, repeatedly exhausting his chakra and pushing through pain. Reports of Lin Chen’s victory over the Level Three Rift undermine his remaining confidence. When Sasuke asks whether he can ever catch up, Kakashi answers that he cannot 31 32 36.

Sasuke consequently rejects gradual training and Konoha’s orthodox ninja methods. He begins viewing Orochimaru’s forbidden techniques and experiments as his remaining route to power. By the Chunin Ninja Exams, surpassing Lin Chen has displaced his interest in rankings, recognition, and even his original revenge against Itachi 36 38.

Cursed Seal and Defection

In the Forest of Death, Sasuke deliberately seeks Orochimaru and willingly accepts the Cursed Seal. Its power drives him into a violent frenzy against an Otogakure squad. Sakura’s embrace briefly restores his clarity, but he pushes her away after deciding that companionship cannot provide the strength he wants 38.

Lin Chen later suppresses his seal with the Devouring Domain. Sasuke responds by committing more deeply to it, eventually slaughtering Otogakure shinobi inside Orochimaru’s isolated barrier. His apparent breakthrough collapses when Lin Chen erases the barrier and again forces the seal dormant 40 42 45 46.

After Lin Chen describes both light and darkness as cages within the Shinobi World, Sasuke resolves to escape that world’s limitations altogether. He rejects Naruto’s pleas to remain with Team 7 and accepts Orochimaru’s guidance. Upon returning to Konoha, he removes his forehead protector and village emblems, choosing defection 46 47 50.

Appearance

• Hair and eyes: Black hair and naturally black eyes; his activated Sharingan turns his eyes scarlet with visible tomoe 6 7 36.
• Cursed Seal: Black markings on his neck spread across his neck and cheeks when activated, accompanied by dark chakra 38 39.

Personality

Initially proud, aloof, and fiercely competitive, Sasuke ties much of his self-worth to his status as an Uchiha genius. Lin Chen’s rise provokes both jealousy and a genuine fear that his own abilities are deteriorating. Rather than accepting defeat, he repeatedly seeks opportunities to recover his standing 4 6 8.

His determination becomes self-destructive as training fails to produce comparable results. He knowingly overtaxes his body, then begins treating pain, brutality, and loss of control as acceptable costs of strength. Once committed to the Cursed Seal, he abandons careful technique and increasingly measures people and bonds by whether they can help him overcome Lin Chen 36 42 45.

His attachment to Team 7 does not vanish immediately: Sakura’s intervention briefly recalls his affection for his companions and memories of Kakashi’s guidance. He nevertheless consciously rejects those attachments, prioritizing power over the relationships that once restrained him 38 47.

Sharingan and Uchiha Bloodline
