Personality

He is skeptical of convenient explanations and politically perceptive. Investigating Lin Chen

Kakashi first encounters Lin Chen’s unusual power while passing the Training Ground after Sasuke’s defeat. His Sharingan witnesses the pressure of the Heavenly Dao being absorbed by an Academy student. When questioned, Lin Chen denies knowing its source 8.

Reporting to Hiruzen, Kakashi describes the event as a collision between the world’s rules rather than ninjutsu, a kekkei genkai, or a secret technique. After Root’s failed probe, he reinforces that assessment. Hiruzen subsequently appoints him as Lin Chen’s personal Jonin instructor under the special-tier development program 9 11 12.

Kakashi doubts Lin Chen’s apparent submission to village oversight and warns Hiruzen that the boy intends to use Konoha’s influence rather than accept its control. At the Graduation Exam, he questions the sudden rule changes and prepares to rescue Lin Chen, only to watch him defeat three Root elites before intervention becomes necessary 12 18.

Team 7 and the Bell Test

Kakashi becomes supervising Jonin to Naruto Uzumaki, Sasuke Uchiha, and Sakura Haruno, with Lin Chen temporarily attached to the team. Hiruzen instructs him to conduct the normal bell test while observing Lin Chen’s limits 19.

The escort mission becomes increasingly dangerous. A mutated sea beast resists his Water Release, and Zabuza’s contaminated sword repeatedly disrupts his chakra. At Gato’s warehouse, seastone dust weakens his defenses against Zabuza and Haku, while a cursed spirit proves immune to his kunai. Lin Chen resolves these encounters through powers Kakashi cannot reproduce 21 22 23 24.

After a spatial rift releases more beasts and pirates, Kakashi identifies the incident as evidence of worlds beyond the Shinobi World. He reports the crisis, arranges for remains and unconscious pirates to be transported to Konoha, and orders Team 7 to maintain strict secrecy. Western-Border Rift

At the Level Two Rift, Kakashi analyzes the overlapping counters that have pinned down an ANBU squad. He supports Lin Chen with Water Release and sealing techniques but cannot effectively contain the Sea King Beasts 28.

After examining the drained enemies, he realizes Lin Chen is not merely countering their abilities but depriving them of their essence. He warns that stronger creatures remain beyond the expanding rift, then witnesses Lin Chen destroy a mature Sea King and a Special Grade Cursed Spirit core. Kakashi reports the outcome and calls for the valley to become a restricted zone with a permanent garrison 29.

His earlier suspicion develops into confidence that Lin Chen is essential to Konoha’s survival. The account of the battle in Chapter 44 likewise depicts Kakashi recognizing him as the Shinobi World’s decisive defense against otherworldly invasion 29 44.

Sasuke’s Descent

Kakashi observes Sasuke’s increasingly destructive training as Lin Chen’s achievements widen the gap between them. He initially offers little advice, believing that experience and mindset cannot simply be imposed on another person 32.
