Though the girl's strength was unclear, her chakra reserves were also terrifying.
These two children...
Hiruzen Sarutobi could not help frowning slightly. He was hesitating. Children like these would undoubtedly have limitless futures.
If he could win them over to Konoha, they could keep Konoha strong and secure for decades!
But they were also an unstable time bomb. The meticulous Hiruzen Sarutobi understood that very well.
These two children were of unknown origin. Though they called themselves Otsutsuki, he had never once heard that surname in his sixty years of life.
And the main issue was Otsutsuki Toneri's disposition. Though he was a child, his mentality was far too mature.
Getting him to accept Konoha and protect it from the bottom of his heart would be extremely difficult. And even if he joined Konoha, if he turned against them during a war...
Konoha would plunge into an abyss from which it could never escape!
The advantage and disadvantage were both far too clear, so he was deeply hesitant at that moment.
"Thank you for your praise, Lord Hokage. You're far too kind. I know my own limitations. I'm merely a blind boy." As though he had not noticed anything unusual about Hiruzen Sarutobi, Otsutsuki Toneri chuckled gently and shook his head.
Though he could not see Hiruzen Sarutobi's expression, the man's emotions were indeed different from how they had been at the beginning.
Presumably, he was thinking something over.
"Hehe... What a polite child you are. Come, sit down first. I'd really like to have a good chat with you, Toneri." Hiruzen Sarutobi settled his thoughts, then spoke to Otsutsuki Toneri with a cheerful smile.
Now was not the time to think about those things. He needed to understand this child first, so he could make the most accurate judgment.
But regardless, as long as Toneri had no intention of harming Konoha, Hiruzen Sarutobi was more than willing to befriend him.
Otsutsuki Toneri warranted that treatment. Even setting aside his terrifying talent, there was the immense chakra within him.
That alone made Hiruzen Sarutobi rather unwilling to become this blind child's enemy.
Though chakra reserves did not represent everything, those with enormous reserves were never weak.
That, too, was a rule.
Otsutsuki Toneri smiled without refusing. Then the four of them sat down, while Otsutsuki Quxian stood behind him.
"Toneri, you had a look around Konoha today. What do you think of the village?" After Toneri had settled into his seat, Hiruzen Sarutobi asked warmly with a smile.
Konoha was the place into which he had poured a lifetime of effort, and the place he took the greatest pride in.
To him, Konoha had essentially become part of his life.
"Konoha really is lively and prosperous. To be honest, though I haven't been traveling the shinobi world for very long, even I understand that Konoha could be called a haven on this continent, couldn't it?"
Otsutsuki Toneri replied with neither servility nor arrogance. Hiruzen Sarutobi's question did not surprise him.
With Hiruzen Sarutobi's shrewdness, he naturally would not simply question Otsutsuki Toneri outright.
He would certainly find an excuse to get closer to Otsutsuki Toneri first.
"Hehe... As long as you're happy, Toneri. If you need anything, you can ask Asuma." Hiruzen Sarutobi smiled in satisfaction at his words. Naturally, he understood what Otsutsuki meant.
"There's no need to trouble Asuma. There actually is something I'd like to trouble you with, Lord Third Hokage." Otsutsuki Toneri first smiled.
Then Otsutsuki Toneri glanced at Asuma and smiled at Hiruzen Sarutobi.
"You... mean the issue with the Hyuga Clan, don't you?"
Hiruzen Sarutobi paused, then seemed to think of something. Lowering his eyelids slightly, he asked Bai Muzi for confirmation.
Otsutsuki Toneri really did not seem to lack anything. If there had to be something...
Aside from the matter of his own eyes, the Hyuga Clan should be his only concern.
"The Third Hokage certainly lives up to his reputation. That's right. Quxian possesses the Byakugan, so I hope you can help handle this, Lord Third Hokage."
Otsutsuki Toneri nodded, then spoke with a hint of helplessness.
He was not afraid of the Hyuga Clan, but since Hiruzen Sarutobi had come to him, he could let Hiruzen Sarutobi resolve this nuisance for him.
Otherwise, the Hyuga Clan would certainly come looking for them and cause trouble.
He was not afraid, but it would be a nuisance. He had no time to play such a boring game with Hyuga Hiashi.
Right now, he only wanted to find a target from the Hyuga Main Family first, then seize his eyes.
Finally, he would take a stroll around Konoha, meet a few people, and set some plans in motion.
If things were exposed, he could simply leave Konoha.
(Asking for everything~)
Chapter 26: A clan passed down for a thousand years! First update!
"That won't be a problem. You can rest assured, Toneri, as long as there's nothing wrong with Quxian's eyes." Hiruzen Sarutobi took a puff of his pipe, then spoke warmly with a kindly smile.
To him, this matter really was not that damn troublesome. After all, the Hyuga Clan was a major clan that had lived through three Shinobi World Wars.
Though they placed tremendous importance on their bloodline, if he, the Hokage, went there in person and made an emotional appeal...
Surely the Hyuga would show him, Hiruzen Sarutobi, some respect.
"You can rest assured about that, Lord Hokage. There's absolutely nothing wrong with Quxian's eyes." Otsutsuki Toneri naturally understood Hiruzen Sarutobi's meaning and replied with a faint smile.
Otsutsuki Quxian's eyes had not been transplanted from elsewhere. She had been born with them. That was the information Otsutsuki Toneri was conveying to Hiruzen Sarutobi.
"Hehe... Then there's no problem. By the way, Toneri, your clan? I don't believe I've ever heard of such a name in the shinobi world." Hiruzen Sarutobi nodded, then fixed his two small eyes on Otsutsuki Toneri.
This was his true purpose. He hoped to learn something about Otsutsuki Toneri's background!
After all, Otsutsuki Toneri was far too mysterious. Everything about him was far too mysterious.
His blindness, his age, his mentality, and the terrifying chakra reserves within him!
All of it was far too mysterious. To Hiruzen Sarutobi and the others, everything about him was unknown.
Though he seemed fine now, who knew whether it was an act?
Hiruzen Sarutobi was responsible for all of Konoha. He had to gain a clear understanding of Otsutsuki Toneri!
"My clan is only a small, obscure clan. It's only natural that you haven't heard of it, Lord Hokage." Otsutsuki Toneri pondered briefly, then said with a soft laugh.
"But you and Quxian hardly seem ordinary, Toneri." Hiruzen Sarutobi narrowed his eyes slightly, seemingly somewhat displeased by Otsutsuki Toneri's lack of cooperation.
This sort of perfunctory answer truly displeased him. It contained no useful details or information whatsoever.
Who was this child trying to fool?
Toneri and Quxian both had exceedingly refined features, and both wore the same white robes and had white hair. They were clearly from the same clan.
Their bearing and excellence were certainly not something an obscure little clan could cultivate, either!
"Very well~ Lord Hokage, my Otsutsuki Clan has been passed down for a thousand years. We've always kept apart from worldly conflicts and never appeared in the shinobi world. It's only because I'm young that I wanted to see the sights of the continent."
At those words, Otsutsuki Toneri inwardly shook his head. Hiruzen Sarutobi was seasoned and prudent. Fooling him really was no easy task.
So, after a moment's consideration, he did reveal some inconsequential information to Hiruzen Sarutobi. Whether Hiruzen believed it was his own business.
Asuma's and Kurenai Yuhi's eyelids twitched at those words, and the looks they gave Otsutsuki Toneri became somewhat peculiar.
A thousand years ago? Apart from worldly conflicts?
Had they not known Otsutsuki Toneri was not the sort to make groundless claims and boast, they would already have been unable to resist laughing and making a few remarks.
Even the oldest clans, such as the Senju and the Uchiha Clan, had histories of only a little over a hundred years.
And even those two mighty clans had dwindled in number. Of the Senju, only Tsunade remained.
Of the Uchiha Clan, only Sasuke Uchiha and his brother remained.
Of course, that was what Asuma and the others believed. In reality, the Uchiha Clan still had Obito hiding in the shadows.
The wheels of history were utterly merciless and cruel. What sort of clan could survive a thousand years without falling?
None existed. There was absolutely no way one could exist!
Besides, if they really had endured for a thousand years, there was no way the history of the shinobi world would contain no record of them!
That was the most important issue! There could not possibly be no record whatsoever!
Yet even Konoha's living fossil, Hiruzen Sarutobi, had never heard the surname Otsutsuki. To them, that already settled the matter.
Hiruzen Sarutobi kept puffing on his pipe, his deep eyes flickering with an unreadable look. At first, he had actually been just like Asuma and Kurenai. His immediate reaction to Otsutsuki Toneri's words had been...
Utterly absurd! Complete nonsense!
But a moment later, he frowned, because he understood that Otsutsuki Toneri actually had no reason at all to deceive him.
There really was no reason. If he did not want to reveal information about himself, he could easily have told a more plausible lie.
Rather than offering information that any ordinary person would take as a joke.
Looking at Otsutsuki Toneri's delicate, adorable face with its closed eyes, that calm expression suddenly sent a deep chill rising through Hiruzen Sarutobi's heart.
It chilled him until his heart grew uneasy, the palpitations making his scalp prickle.
The unknown was what people feared most!
"Ahem... I'm getting old, getting old. Then, Toneri, would you be willing to reveal where your clan lives? I'm sure you understand. What you've said is simply too astonishing."
Forcing down the inexplicable dread and fear in his heart, Hiruzen Sarutobi managed a strained smile and questioned this child who was becoming increasingly alarming to him.
He was already over sixty, yet the child before him today had still made him lose his composure somewhat.
The things Otsutsuki Toneri said led his calculating mind to consider far, far more than the others did.
Though he knew his question was presumptuous and impolite, Hiruzen Sarutobi asked it anyway.
I've set up a home base, liu I yi love qi you liu all qi oh si darlings liu er yi~ You know what I mean. Asking for everything~
