Background / History

Childhood and Xi Qingyan

Gu Chupei grew up in a remote mountain village without knowing his father. His mother neglected and beat him, and reportedly tried to sell him to men who visited her. When Xi Qingyan first encountered him stealing his wallet, Gu Chupei was extremely thin, poorly clothed, and unable to conceal his ears and tail 104 113.

Xi Qingyan had him brought to his temporary residence, but treated him as a pet and subjected him to beatings. After a month, Xi Qingyan left with his father and abandoned Gu Chupei without support. Gu Chupei found him again two years later, after his mother’s death. Xi Qingyan then took him in and gave him the name Gu Chupei 113.

Gu Chupei’s fervent declarations of love developed within this abusive dependence. Xi Qingyan later explained that Gu Chupei had professed love to avoid being abandoned. After recognizing his own cruelty, Xi Qingyan went abroad rather than arrange proper treatment for him 113.

Recruitment by Pei Hanmo

Pei Hanmo first met Gu Chupei in a bar through an introduction. He was recommended as someone capable of helping Pei Hanmo obtain Pei Holdings. Pei Hanmo’s offer included helping him find a substitute for Xi Qingyan 59.

As Pei Hanmo’s assistant, Gu Chupei handled reports, scheduling, transport, and sensitive assignments. He was also familiar enough with his employer’s romantic life to tease him openly and help arrange opportunities to meet Chu Xinghui 2 3 21 102.

Contract with Lan Xiangxian

The early stages of Gu Chupei and Lan Xiangxian’s arrangement are recounted retrospectively. Gu Chupei contracted Lan Xiangxian as a substitute for Xi Qingyan, brought him to one of his villas, and supplied clothes, a phone, and financial support. Despite Lan Xiangxian’s expectations, he initially wanted only someone to hold while sleeping 100 101 102.

Gu Chupei later explained that insomnia led him to seek sleeping companions who resembled Xi Qingyan. His previous arrangements had not involved sex; companions who sought it had their contracts canceled. Lan Xiangxian became his first sexual partner after initiating an encounter while drunk and emotionally despondent 93 105 106.

His attachment soon exceeded the substitute arrangement. He noticed Lan Xiangxian’s habits, disliked him making himself resemble Xi Qingyan, and wanted to remain close even when they were not having sex 103 107.

Coercion and Separation

Gu Chupei became increasingly jealous of Lan Xiangxian’s friendship with Wen Liangtian. He considered tightening their contract and rationalized confinement as something his financial support entitled him to impose. He also threatened Lan Xiangxian through his control over his mother’s hospital care 36 50.

After smelling another person’s pheromones on Lan Xiangxian, Gu Chupei forcibly restrained and sexually assaulted him. When Chu Xinghui confronted and slapped him, Gu Chupei defended the relationship as a transaction 52 110.

Xi Qingyan’s return brought the conflict to a breaking point. At the airport, Lan Xiangxian announced that he was moving out, with Chu Xinghui and Wen Liangtian protecting him from Gu Chupei’s objections. Once Lan Xiangxian left and the hospital stopped providing information, Gu Chupei lost his means of controlling or contacting him 53 54.

Gu Chupei initially insisted that he needed Lan Xiangxian to prove his love for Xi Qingyan. Xi Qingyan challenged this claim: Gu Chupei accepted the possibility of Xi Qingyan dating someone else, but vehemently opposed him pursuing Lan Xiangxian. His distress included shaking hands, obsessive searching, drinking, and crying 59 110 111.

Violence Outside the Relationship

After discovering demands for money on Lan Xiangxian’s phone, Gu Chupei confronted his abusive father. He dragged the man into an alley and attacked him; the father’s death is later confirmed. When Lan Xiangxian asked what happened, Gu Chupei obscured his responsibility with deliberately misleading wording 105 114.

He also killed the stalker who had secretly filmed Chu Xinghui changing clothes. After the man left the police station and disclosed his intention to distribute the videos, Gu Chupei dragged him into an alley. Three hours later, he sent Pei Hanmo a photograph of the corpse 63.

Rebuilding Trust

Lan Xiangxian eventually agreed to begin again as friends and removed Gu Chupei from his blocklist. Gu Chupei celebrated the opportunity, delivered food for five consecutive days, and reflected on his earlier mistreatment. He resolved to accept whatever future would make Lan Xiangxian happy 115.

When Lan Xiangxian’s mother requested a visit, Gu Chupei was anxious and ashamed because he had previously used her to threaten her son. Their private conversation ended with him calling her “Mom” and proposing that they bring her home after her recovery. He described the experience as his first genuine sense of family belonging 115 116.

Appearance

• Adult appearance: Viewers of the variety-show livestream call him handsome 43.
• Childhood appearance: Photographs show a shy-looking child with numerous conspicuous scars. Lan Xiangxian does not observe those scars on his adult body, but their disappearance is not explained 106.
• Animal features: His ears and tail were exposed when Xi Qingyan first found him as a child 113.
• During violence: His eyes turn blood-red and his fingernails lengthen into sharp claws 63.

Personality

Gu Chupei is teasing and irreverent around Pei Hanmo, openly complaining about his workload and mocking his employer’s lovesick behavior. Nevertheless, he remains guarded even with him. His childhood taught him to distrust others, and he fears emotional or pheromone dependence after witnessing people die because of such attachments 2 21 72.

His fear of abandonment manifests as possessiveness, denial, and coercion. He monitors Lan Xiangxian’s spending notifications, resents his friendships, and invokes their contract rather than acknowledge his own attachment. Xi Qingyan suggests possible separation anxiety disorder after observing his shaking hands and inability to stop searching for Lan Xiangxian; this is presented as an observation, not a confirmed diagnosis 36 108 110.

Gu Chupei is capable of extreme cruelty, treating the stalker he kills as prey to be toyed with. Around Lan Xiangxian, he also shows embarrassment, eagerness for affection, and a desire to belong. His later willingness to prioritize Lan Xiangxian’s happiness contrasts with his earlier insistence on ownership and control 63 103 115 116.
