Background / History

Hereditary Poisoning

Dugu Bo’s family suffers from an inherited mixed poison: the Jade Phosphorous Serpent’s innate venom mutated after combining with toxins introduced through poison-type soul rings. Later descendants inherited the poison, and further ring absorption could change it again. Other clan members died from poison outbreaks; by the time Dugu Bo discusses the matter with Yang Yunhai, only he and Dugu Yan remain alive 74 89.

Despite his expertise in poison and pharmacology, Dugu Bo cannot cure the condition himself. He relies on the Ice and Fire Yin Yang Well to suppress his toxins and initially doubts that Yang Yunhai can recognize or absorb poison 49 58.

Treatment by Yang Yunhai

After Dugu Yan reports Yang Yunhai’s proposed cure, Dugu Bo visits him and submits to an examination. Yang recommends transferring the mutated toxins into Soul Bones, estimating that Dugu Bo requires a bone at least ten thousand years old, while Dugu Yan needs one at least five thousand years old 56 58.

Dugu Bo takes Yang to his hidden Medicine Garden. Although he initially contemplates harming him, Yang’s willingness to consume dangerous ice- and fire-attribute herbs and use his blood to refine medicine makes Dugu Bo feel guilty and reconsider his intentions 61. He supplies alchemy tools and obtains a suitable Soul Bone himself rather than accepting the Blue Lightning Tyrant Dragon Clan’s marriage-linked offer 62 75 80.

Yang’s treatment removes the harmful mixed toxins while preserving the Martial Soul’s innate venom. Dugu Bo later publicly credits him with curing both grandfather and granddaughter 71 144.

Dugu Yan’s Future and Martial Soul Evolution

Dugu Bo uses the request for a treatment Soul Bone to test Yu Tianheng’s sincerity. The clan responds by offering a ten-thousand-year strength-type bone as a betrothal gift, which Dugu Bo regards as an attempt to secure Dugu Yan’s marriage before addressing her health. He refuses the arrangement and urges her to reassess the relationship 57 69 70 80.

He increasingly favors Yang Yunhai as a future grandson-in-law and asks him to train Dugu Yan, offering his Medicine Garden and protection in return 63 84. His matchmaking also becomes intrusive: he secretly disperses medicine through the dormitory and later admits to Chrysanthemum Douluo that he concealed its source 152 155.

With his poisoning treated, Dugu Bo consumes the Earth Dragon Golden Gourd recommended by Yang. His Martial Soul evolves, his appearance changes, and his confidence rises sharply 62 115 116.

Alliance with Chrysanthemum Douluo

Dugu Bo’s longstanding rivalry with Yue Guan initially continues. He loses a duel after discovering that Chrysanthemum Douluo has reached Level 96 and greatly strengthened his soul skills 88 89.

Their relationship changes when Yue Guan reveals that he is Yang Yunhai’s teacher and has protected Dugu Bo and Dugu Yan from Bibi Dong’s interest in using their blood to help Yu Xiaogang. Dugu Bo thanks him and agrees to cooperate, including dividing future Soul Bone gains from their enemies 138.

The pair then stage a public confrontation while explaining Dugu Bo’s transformation. Their account presents the dragon-related treasures as discoveries made through Martial Soul resonance, concealing the Medicine Garden’s broader resources 143 144 145. They later publicly agree to settle their old grudges and turn hostility into friendship at Yunhai Academy 253.

Conflict with the Blue Lightning Tyrant Dragon Clan

Dugu Bo moves into the Heaven Dou Battle Team’s dormitory to protect the younger soul masters after an intrusion. He also plans to blame the incident on the Blue Lightning Tyrant Dragon Clan, preparing a public justification for future retaliation 143 144 146.

The clan subsequently considers assassinating him and taking advantage of the treasures’ effects on his and Dugu Yan’s bloodlines 148. When Yu Yuanzhen leads eight Soul Douluo into an ambush, Dugu Bo’s group springs its prepared counterattack. His Time Freeze combines with Yue Guan and Gui Mei’s Two Extremes Stillness Domain, allowing his poison to kill the attacking force 238.

Dugu Bo, Yang Yunhai, and their allies later annihilate the remaining clan in retaliation. He reports its destruction to the academy and imperial court, presents a recording of the killings, and accepts Emperor Xue Ye’s offer to become Yunhai Academy’s headmaster 245 246. The publicly broadcast recording makes him famous throughout Heaven Dou City 247.

Later Activities

Dugu Bo continues supporting Dugu Yan’s cultivation and joins Ming Hongchen in exploring the Poisonous Barrier Land. Both retreat when confronted by an overwhelmingly powerful dragon-like plant soul beast with more than two hundred thousand years of cultivation 269 270.

After Chrysanthemum Douluo and Ghost Douluo kill Tang Hao, Dugu Bo handles the corpse and arrangements involving the palace. He tells Tang Yuehua that she may collect her brother’s body at the Execution Grounds 277 278. Later, he receives Ming Hongchen and other arrivals as former enemies assemble as comrades-in-arms 348.

Appearance

  • After Martial Soul evolution: Appears much younger, with a stronger physique and changed hair and eye colors. Shaving his beard makes him difficult for acquaintances to recognize 144.
  • Evolved Martial Soul: Blackish-brown and wingless, with dense keratinous growths extending from tail to head like a range of steep stone peaks 115.
  • Martial Soul Avatar: A massive brown dragon whose size and rocky appearance draw comparisons to a stone mountain 238 247.

Personality

Dugu Bo is blunt, proud, and easily provoked, but he places considerable value on gratitude and personal loyalty. Yang Yunhai describes him as petty yet clear about the difference between kindness and grudges. Once he accepts Yang as a benefactor, he offers protection, medicinal resources, and help without demanding formal deference 58 71 85.

His granddaughter’s safety governs many of his decisions. He judges Yu Tianheng by his conduct rather than declarations of affection, while admiring Yang’s diligence, creativity, and willingness to test his own theories 57 63 70 113. That protectiveness coexists with manipulation: he engineers tests, conceals information, and interferes in Dugu Yan’s romantic life 57 115 152 155.

Against enemies, Dugu Bo favors preparation and overwhelming retaliation. He recognizes when an opponent is beyond him, but once he gains an advantage, he is willing to destroy an entire hostile force rather than leave future threats alive 97 238 245.
