Appearance
- Build: Upright humanoids initially resembling ordinary survivors in height and proportions 15.
- Skin and face: Ashen-white skin, with taut facial flesh clinging closely to the bones; some later individuals appear gray-white or grayish-blue 15 39 41.

- Hands: Dark, hardened fingertips and poisonous claws; ice-covered individuals also have sharp icy edges capable of scraping armor 15 40.
- Cold emanations: Chilling white vapor surrounds their bodies, while later encounters feature visible ice coatings 15 39 40.
- Odor: A distinctive fetid, rotten smell can reveal their presence 48.
Background and History
Cold Stiffs form when humanoid bodies undergo prolonged erosion by the Frost Forest’s bitterly cold earth energy. Their original vitality and independent consciousness disappear, leaving an instinct to prey on living creatures. The circumstances of their lives before mutation are not identified 15 39.
Lu Heng first encounters four after a small sound carries through the woods. He kills the first with a damaged stone axe, unlocking the Survival Bracelet’s identification entry. When the axe becomes trapped in another monster, he switches to a wooden spear. He ultimately defeats the group using precise thrusts, a heavy rock, and a trip that exposes the final monster’s skull 15 16.
During the first snowfall, Lu Heng encounters a much faster Black Iron Cold Stiff and subsequently fights a larger group led by another Black Iron individual. Their increasing numbers and active hunting make forest travel more dangerous. A group follows his scent home, prompting him to prioritize stronger shelter defenses and improved close-combat skills 39 40 41 42.
Cold Stiffs continue battering his shelter after his battle with a Spotted Leopard. Once the leopard’s core strengthens his body, Lu Heng kills one at the entrance with a single slash that cuts completely through its flesh and bones 48 49.
Behavior
- Hunting targets: Attack humans and wildlife. Lu Heng witnesses four surrounding, killing, and eating a snow hare 15 41.
- Ordinary movement: Shuffle with dragging footsteps and stiff knees, often advancing without avoiding branches or adjusting their footing 15.
- Persistence: Continue approaching without hesitation and repeatedly ram blocked shelter entrances 15 42 48 49.
- Group coordination: The first group obstructs its own attacks and shows no cooperative awareness. Later hunters precisely cut off a hare’s escape routes, while a Black Iron leader keeps its surrounding group more organized 15 40 41.
- Distribution: By the Birch Forest encounters, wandering groups of two or three are increasingly common 41.
Abilities & Skills
Cold-Erosion Corpse Poison
Their flesh contains poison that enters the bloodstream when a scratch breaks the skin 15.
- Corrodes the victim’s body, stiffens or paralyzes limbs, and continuously drains stamina 15 16 33.
- Does not kill directly in its demonstrated use against Blue-Backed Jackals; instead, it leaves them unable to rise or attack 33.
- Can be harvested from poison glands, applied directly to weapons, or further purified into poison. Its initial item description states that no antidote is currently available 16.
- Lu Heng uses poison-coated projectiles to immobilize three Blue-Backed Jackals and escape being trapped in a tree 33.
Hearing and Scent Tracking
Cold Stiffs locate prey through sound and smell rather than sight 41.
- Small noises can attract them; one reacts to Lu Heng’s footing from roughly one hundred meters away 15 41.
- Can follow a lingering scent trail to a shelter entrance 41.
- The Birch Forest Black Iron leader uses its ice coating to amplify hearing 40.
Ice Armor and Physical Strength
Ice-covered Cold Stiffs combine bodily cold with protective outer layers 39 40.
- The Birch Forest leader’s gray-patterned ice stops most crossbow bolts from reaching its body 40.
- Its punches shake a large tree and nearly knock Lu Heng’s hunting blade from his hand 40.
- Icy claw wounds cause frostbite, numbness, and persistent cold in the injured limb 41 42.
Weaknesses and Counters
- Restricted neck movement: Frozen, necrotic cervical vertebrae prevent the Birch Forest Cold Stiffs from looking upward, allowing Lu Heng to conceal himself in a tree 40 42.
- Vulnerable joints: Ordinary individuals can be disabled through joint attacks. Cutting the Black Iron leader’s leg-joint armor also disrupts its balance 15 40.
- Neck and skull damage: Spear thrusts and crossbow bolts to these areas kill ordinary individuals 15 16 40.
- Predictable attacks: Ordinary lunges are difficult to redirect, and stiff footing makes them susceptible to sidesteps and trips 15 16.
- Leader’s recovery delay: The Birch Forest leader pauses for half a second after punching and turns slowly, creating openings for counterattacks 40.
- Central energy channel: Piercing this channel kills the Black Iron leader and causes its ice armor to lose its luster 40.
- Lightning-struck wood: Its pure yang wood energy explicitly counters Cold Stiffs and can protect against cold corruption when fashioned into accessories or incorporated into a shelter 44.
- Braced barriers: The groups attacking Lu Heng’s cave fail to force open its timber-braced entrance 42 49.
