The wolf's fangs yielded, and shadows loomed afar

Tsunade's swift, decisive crackdown was like an ever-tightening noose, leaving Danzo and his Root less and less room to operate. The Anbu directly under the Hokage watched every exit of the Root Base almost openly, while financial audits tightened their grip on its lifeline. At meetings of the Konoha High Command, voices supporting Tsunade gradually drowned out the silent conservatives.

In this silent war, the balance was tipping.

Yet Danzo, that cunning old viper, would never sit and wait for death.

That evening, the setting sun stained Hokage Rock blood-red. A Root member arrived outside Ling's hospital room in the Medical Department. He was no shadow monster like those before, but a jonin wearing an ordinary animal mask, his presence steady.

The guards Tsunade had posted stopped him. "By Elder Danzo's orders, I have come to visit Uchiha Ling and convey the elder's message." The Root member's voice was calm and level, betraying no emotion.

Only after requesting instructions did the guards cautiously let him through, watching him closely the entire time.

The Root member entered the room, ignoring the still-prominent bandages on Ling's shoulder. He merely bowed slightly and spoke in a formulaic tone. "Uchiha Ling, Elder Danzo expresses his regret and apologies for the vicious attack caused by a certain out-of-control experimental subject in your dormitory area a few days ago. An investigation has established that the subject was privately cultivated by a former researcher who has since defected, and that it escaped after going out of control. Root has now purged its ranks, and those responsible have been severely punished."

Ling leaned against the headboard, listening expressionlessly to this prepared account. Sacrifice a pawn to save the king, find a scapegoat. Danzo's usual methods, sure enough.

"Elder Danzo guarantees that no such incident will ever happen again," the Root member continued, his tone as flat as before. Yet Ling's Jōgan caught an exceedingly faint fluctuation in his chakra, one that signified humiliation and resentment. "The elder hopes you can recover in peace, remain unaffected by this incident, and continue serving Konoha in the future."

This was nearly a concession and a guarantee in disguise. Danzo was using this approach to temporarily appease Tsunade's anger and buy himself breathing room.

"Thank Elder Danzo for his concern." Ling's reply was mild, neither servile nor overbearing. "I will keep Lord Hokage's teachings in mind, recover in peace, and work hard to improve my strength in preparation for the future."

He deliberately emphasized "Lord Hokage," drawing a clear line.

The gaze behind the Root member's mask seemed to flicker. He said nothing more, bowed slightly again, then turned and left.

A compromise had been reached. On the surface, at least.

Danzo had handed over one (or more) scapegoats and admitted to (some) managerial negligence in exchange for Tsunade temporarily halting her more aggressive crackdown. And Tsunade, lacking conclusive evidence directly linking Danzo to the assassination order, had quit while she was ahead, consolidating her authority and buying time for the investigation to continue.

The storm seemed to have subsided for now, but Ling knew this was merely a brief calm before the tempest. Danzo would never truly stop. He would only conceal himself more deeply, and his next strike would certainly be even deadlier.

With Danzo's "compromise," the tense atmosphere outside the hospital room seemed to ease somewhat. The Hokage's personal Anbu guards remained, but that omnipresent sense of cold scrutiny from Root had indeed weakened considerably.

Ling had gained a precious, relatively safe respite.

He focused even more intently on his recovery and training. Under the effects of Tsunade's specially prepared ointment and the nourishment of Yang Release, his shoulder wound healed rapidly. His stitches were removed in less than a week, leaving only a pale pink scar. He began more extensive taijutsu rehabilitation training and, under Rock Lee's guidance (his injuries had also improved considerably), learned more advanced techniques for generating power in taijutsu.

At night, he immersed himself in gaining a deeper understanding and control of the Yin Release Fragment's energy. With the experience of that last life-and-death struggle, he no longer simply absorbed it as he had before. Instead, he tried using the Jōgan's power to "sort through" and "purify" the impurities and negative emotions within the energy, drawing in only the purest Yin Release essence. The process was slow and difficult, but it made his foundation more solid and his control over the energy increasingly precise and subtle.

At the same time, he never stopped developing those mutated Sharingan. He discovered that when he finely adjusted the Jōgan's power to a specific frequency and channeled it into the Sharingan, he could greatly enhance their "perception" and "prediction." He could even briefly "see" finer vulnerabilities and junctions in an opponent's chakra flow, undoubtedly a tremendous advantage in actual combat.

That day, just as Ling was trying to apply this "microscopic perception" to his chakra nature transformation training, the mark at his heart stirred again.

This time, it was no longer a vague fragment of thought, but an exceedingly brief yet incomparably clear image, appearing directly in his mind like a brand:

-A dark, damp cave, its stone walls covered in luminous moss. At its center stood a man in an Akatsuki cloak, his hair as pale as seaweed and his skin so white he hardly seemed alive. With his back to the viewpoint, he was looking down at a... container in his hands, which emitted an ominous purplish-black glow? Some kind of liquid seemed to churn within it, faintly reflecting a pair of... cold, snake-like golden slit pupils!

The image vanished in a flash, accompanied by a complex surge of emotion from the mark that mingled warning with a strange anticipation. Then it fell silent.

Ling abruptly clutched his chest, his breathing suddenly quickening!

An Akatsuki cloak! Akatsuki! That pale-haired man... was he Orochimaru?! He was actually mixed up with Akatsuki?! The thing in that container... those snake eyes... gave him an intensely familiar yet dangerous feeling. They shared the same source as the Fragment within him and the energy beneath the Forest of Death, yet were purer and more evil!

What the mysterious person had sent this time was no longer vague information, but a clear, critically important piece of intelligence! Was he giving a warning? Or offering guidance?

Coordinates... southeast... transaction... beware the eyes...

Linking the earlier incomplete information with this image, Ling arrived at a chilling conjecture: Orochimaru might be somewhere to the southeast, conducting a transaction with someone (very likely another member of Akatsuki) involving that dangerous energy or container (perhaps the "eyes"?)!

And what was the mysterious person's purpose in "feeding" him this intelligence? Did he want to use Konoha (or Ling himself) to interfere with the transaction? Or did he want to draw him into this larger whirlpool as well?

A chill swept through Ling. The struggle within Konoha had yet to subside, and a larger, more dangerous shadow from outside was already closing in.

He walked to the window and gazed at the southeastern sky, his eyes deep and solemn.

Danzo, Akatsuki, Orochimaru, the mysterious person... He felt as though he stood on an enormous chessboard filled with danger and opportunity, and there was far more than one player moving the pieces.

He had to grow stronger, faster-strong enough to see the entire game, strong enough... to qualify as a player, rather than a pawn at another's mercy.

The scar on his shoulder ached faintly, reminding him of the struggle's brutality.

He drew a deep breath. Glimmers of glassy and scarlet light intertwined in his eyes as he murmured:

"It seems I really don't have much time left."
