Background / History

Burden of Her Martial Soul

Xuan Zi spent much of her life managing the Taotie Divine Bull’s defects. She needed enormous quantities of energy each day, experienced persistent hunger, and sometimes struggled to control the urge to gorge herself. As she began feeling the effects of age, she continued carrying her master’s expectations and Mu En’s trust in her ability to protect Shrek 82.

Reserve Team Selection and Training

Xuan Zi oversaw the selection of seven Outer Court students for Shrek’s tournament Reserve Team. She invited all candidates to attack her, then demonstrated the gap between them by crushing He Caicai’s cannon beam, repelling coordinated attacks, and applying gravity across the training ground 53.

During the assessment, she endured Gu Xingyue’s self-created elemental lotus and recognized Huo Yutong’s Ultimate Ice. Delighted that Shrek possessed Ultimate Ice, Ultimate Lightning, and Ultimate Life in the same generation, she named Huo Yutong and Gu Xingyue Shrek’s Twin Stars 54.

She subsequently arranged joint training with Inner Court disciples, rejecting objections about the students’ unequal cultivation because real opponents would not respect such restrictions. After Gu Xingyue defeated seven Inner Court disciples with Battle Armor, she chose not to interrogate him, though she reported the armor’s characteristics to Mu En 55 57 60.

Tournament and Body Sect Conflicts

Xuan Zi escorted Shrek’s team to Star Luo City using flying soul tools supplied by the Sun Moon Empire. When the students proved too slow, she gathered them with her soul power and accelerated the entire group herself 61.

The Body Sect’s attempt to seize Huo Yutong drew her into battle with Du Busì. Jin Hongchen supported her with soul guidance cannons, but the arrival of Du Bisi escalated the confrontation beyond Xuan Zi’s normal strength. After being struck into the arena wall, she burned her origin rather than abandon the students. Mu En’s arrival forced the Body Sect to withdraw 66 68.

Despite Mu En’s order to recuperate, Xuan Zi fought again when Shrek’s returning convoy was ambushed. Still weakened by her earlier sacrifice, she was overwhelmed by Du Busì even after burning her rings and life force. Pinned in a crater, she briefly considered surrendering to death before rejecting the thought of abandoning her responsibilities 68 76 82.

Her subsequent breakthrough reversed the battle. As a Limit Douluo empowered by Gluttony, she suppressed Du Busì’s Golden-Level Awakening, injured Du Bisi, and forced both sisters beneath her gravity 83 84.

Gluttony’s Divine Hall and Jialing Pass

After the battle, Xuan Zi clarified that the God of Gluttony had chosen her as a representative, not an inheritor. Her assignment was to establish a Divine Hall at Jialing Pass and assist in finding envoys for the other Original Sin Gods. She advised Mu En not to rush those appointments, since the gods would likely choose people whose natures suited their own 85 86.

On the journey to the Heavenly Soul Empire, she and Yan Shaozhe captured the Auspicious Beast. When the Red King demanded its release, Xuan Zi negotiated for a Thunderclap Infernal Prison Vine and a spiritual-type soul beast 89.

In the imperial capital, she killed guards who tried to arrest Shrek’s group, entered the palace, and demanded Jialing Pass. After the Body Sect refused to intervene, the emperor conceded. Xuan Zi accepted the transfer documents and later directed Zhang Lexuan to complete the fortress’s military handover 94 95 96 98.

Before reaching the pass, she also led a carefully protected operation against the Death God Envoy. She supplied each student with two single-use invincibility barriers, scouted ahead with three Hyper Douluos, and tore open the enemy’s cave for Yan Shaozhe to eliminate him 97.

Divine Trials and the Immortal Herbs

At the completed Gluttony Divine Hall, Xuan Zi brought Huo Yutong into the testing array and received confirmation that she had obtained the Divine-Level Nine Trials. The other six Original Sin Gods then bestowed their trials as well 101.

Xuan Zi witnessed Huo Yutong’s decision to pursue all seven Divine Seats and privately anticipated that her own position might rise alongside Huo Yutong’s success. She then encouraged the other Reserve Team members to seek trials in the neighboring halls 102 103 104.

When Gu Xingyue disclosed the location of the Ice and Fire Yin Yang Well, she agreed to accompany him. At the well, she used her Limit Douluo pressure to force the sentient immortal herbs into submission, then offered him first choice 104 106.

Personality

Xuan Zi’s casual manner conceals considerable discipline. She eats while supervising students, boasts about her cultivation, and openly mocks people she dislikes, but she does not lose sight of practical concerns. She recognizes political maneuvering behind the tournament’s opening arrangements and supports Shrek’s adoption of soul tools rather than clinging to older traditions 53 63 64.

Her loyalty to Shrek is stronger than her concern for its reputation. She reassures the team that losing is acceptable because “ten thousand years of glory” cannot feed anyone. When students face mortal danger, however, she is willing to sacrifice her foundation and life to protect them 68 71 82.

She can also exercise restraint: despite her curiosity about Battle Armor, she leaves Gu Xingyue free to explain it in his own time. Her treatment of outsiders is much harsher. She dismisses the Heavenly Soul Empire as a decaying collection of sect interests, kills obstructing guards, and uses overwhelming strength to secure its compliance 57 94.

Her appetite remains a sensitive subject even after its supernatural compulsion is removed. When Gu Xingyue calls the ravenous Auspicious Beast a “bottomless rice bucket,” Xuan Zi suspects that the remark is aimed at her and becomes furious 83 91.
