Background / History

Foundation and Early Prestige

Lü Hui founded the sect more than five hundred years before the current events. According to its tradition, he possessed a pure Yang Dao body, cultivated a Yang Spirit, and also wielded the strength of a Martial Saint. The sect’s name derives from his Dao body. Accounts credit him with a lifespan exceeding two hundred years, though stories of his later life differ 16 18 26.

When Great Shang was founded three hundred years earlier, the dynasty received the support of the Sixteen Sects and promised to share the realm with them. Twelve survived into the present era, becoming the Three Sacred Lands and Nine Sects; Pure Yang belongs to the latter group 14.

Spirit Refining Legacy and Decline

None of the patriarch’s successors reproduced his pure Yang Dao body or his full accomplishments. The Spirit Refining lineage gradually declined, leaving qi refinement to sustain the sect’s position among the major powers 18.

Chi Xiao True Person represented an earlier period of exceptional strength. His Blazing Sun Art made even the Great Shang court and Three Pure Ones Temple reluctant to challenge Pure Yang, whose prestige then rivaled Zhenwu and Sky Dragon 49.

More recently, Tang Yue was the sect’s only expert to become a True Person in nearly a century. His Wood Spirit Dao Body supported the alchemy for which Pure Yang was renowned. His successor, Ning Qing, possesses a Water Spirit Dao Body and cannot replace his medicinal production 16 23 29.

  • Regional influence: Disciples hold commandery offices or establish powerful local clans throughout Jiangzhou and Qing Province 14.
  • Tributary families: The Qin family is one such affiliated clan and pays part of its revenue to the sect 11 14.

  • Council of Elders: Its highest-level deliberative meeting, generally convened for matters affecting the sect’s future 32.
  • Supreme Elders: Song Huangting and Daoist Shan Hui hold these positions. Song remains the sect’s active First Grade pillar, while Shan Hui’s advanced age severely limits his fighting ability 26 32.

Cultivation Heritage

Qi Refinement and Swordsmanship

Pure Yang’s qi-refining lineage sustains its standing among the Nine Sects 18.

Method Documented Function
Pure Yang Qi Refining Art Qin Lian’s primary cultivation method before reaching Third Rank; its perfection enables him to weave True Astral Qi into armor 17 18.
Great Void Visualization Diagram Tempers the mind through visualization of the Great Void and leads toward Second Grade Divine Intent 4 17.
Great Void Sword Qi Sect-defining sword art accompanying the Great Void Visualization Diagram; projects Sword Qi beyond the body 4 44.
Liuhe Duzun Sword Art Produces six streams of Sword Qi that support attack, defense, advance, and retreat 19 20.
Great Sun Visualization Diagram A sect text Song Huangting offers Qin Lian after his Second Grade breakthrough 43.
Northern Darkness and Purple Cloud Visualization Diagrams Cultivated by several of the sect’s established Second Grade experts 26.
  • Divine Intent limitation: Compatibility with temperament matters. Even a thorough intellectual understanding of a visualization method does not guarantee a breakthrough, and unsuitable practice can damage the mind 17.
  • Movement arts: Nine Heavens Embracing the Moon, Chasing the Wind and Pursuing the Sun, and Inch of Land, Rivers and Mountains are among its highest-level lightness techniques. Lightness skills are nevertheless not a particular sect specialty 22.

Spirit Refining and Spells

Pure Yang preserves a Yang Spirit inheritance containing nine spells 31.

Category Spells
Minor arts Fire Avoidance, Water Entry, Praying for Clear Skies, Praying for Rain, Sharpness 31
True arts Juggling Pellets, Dream Marriage, Revival, Blazing Sun 31
  • Classification: Minor and true arts differ in power and difficulty, not in the practitioner’s cultivation realm 31.
  • Fire Spirit inheritance: The patriarch’s affinity left the sect with numerous Fire Spirit methods, including the Chi Xiao Treasure Canon 30.
  • Dream-Wedding Technique: Shan Hui’s teaching is instrumental in Qin Lian’s comprehension of Great Void Divine Intent and escape from the Demon Sword’s slaughter illusion 48.
  • Cultivation risk: Many older elders avoid forcibly refining qi into spirit because failure can cause death or permanent incapacitation 30.

Alchemy

  • Tang Yue’s contribution: His Wood Spirit Dao Body allowed exceptional understanding of medicinal principles, spellcasting, improved grain yields, and restoration of withered plants 16.
  • Purple Jade True Pills: Purple bamboo heart is an important ingredient. Greater access to it would let Pure Yang train more Fourth Rank True Astral experts 14.

Resources and Artifacts

  • Taibai Mine Mountain — Produces Tai-Bai Gold Stone, refined into material for powerful weapons. Pure Yang offers to capture and guard the mine while splitting its proceeds equally with Qin Lian’s Taibai Sword Sect 15.
  • Dao-Enlightenment Spirit Tea — Produced at Purple Cloud Peak; Qin Lian receives ten portions as compensation after defeating Lin Yuyan 21 32.
  • Heavenly Splendor Treasure Tree — Secured by Cloudmist Peak in Spirit Radiance Commandery. Song Huangting demands its fruit and other regional resources as compensation for the campaign 34 44.
  • Heavenly Extreme Demon Sword — Acquired following the Sword Province intervention. Its slaughter illusions threaten the wielder’s reason and humanity; Song Huangting agrees to study it without immediately borrowing its power 42 44.
  • Magical Artifacts — The sect possesses only three to five, illustrating the diminished resources of its Spirit Refining lineage 29.
  • Chi Xiao Magical Sword — A top-tier flying-sword Magical Artifact preserved within Chi Xiao True Person’s legacy 49 50.
  • Spirit-Consolidating Incense — Purchased externally and largely stored at Forget-the-World Peak. Pure Yang lost its production site after the Three Pure Ones Temple consolidated control of the Divine Dao 48.

Relationships

  • Qin Lian — Cloudmist Peak legacy disciple, later Council elder and Library Pavilion Master. The sect protects his cultivation; his concealed Second Grade breakthrough makes him a central defensive asset 15 25 43.
  • Taibai Sword Sect — Established under Qin Lian’s name with Pure Yang’s financial, administrative, and military support. Xu Hailong manages it as deputy sect master 15 17.
  • Qin Family — An affiliated local clan that pays tribute to Pure Yang and benefits from Qin Lian’s membership 11 14.
  • Overlord Blade / Tyrant Blade Sect — Neighboring rival. Disputes include the Purple Bamboo Forest and Taibai Mine Mountain; the Heavenly Martial Bureau attempts to turn their rivalry into open war 14 21 25.
  • Ten Thousand Swords Manor — Ye Wuji requests intervention against Ye Yingxiong, offering southeastern territory and the Heavenly Extreme Sword. Pure Yang later agrees to withdraw in exchange for delivery of the sword 32 36 42.
  • Heavenly Martial Bureau — Principal political threat. Fang Tianqian seeks to destabilize Pure Yang and other sects, provoke destructive warfare, and justify court intervention 21 48.
  • Three Pure Ones Temple — Its dominance over Spirit Refining restricts Pure Yang’s access to Dao-body talent and spiritual resources 24 48.

Story Role / Major Arcs

Qin Lian’s Return and the Taibai Sword Sect

After Qin Lian reaches the Heaven Ranking, Pure Yang formally celebrates his achievement and offers to support a sect under his name. He accepts membership in the Council of Elders and the Library Pavilion mastership while delegating Taibai’s administration. Liu Xu’s succession as Cloudmist Peak Master proceeds with sect-wide attendance 13 14 15 17.

When Gao Qianchi challenges Qin Lian over Taibai Mine Mountain, the leadership chooses to protect his cultivation rather than force him into the dispute. The elders plan to compensate him for lost income, believing he can reach Divine Intent within one or two years 25.

Sword Province Intervention

Ye Wuji’s appeal forces the leadership to weigh the Heavenly Extreme Sword’s potential against its dangers. The elders favor intervention both to strengthen Pure Yang and to prevent the Heavenly Martial Bureau’s encirclement. Song Huangting leads the main force, while the peaks receive commandery objectives 32 33.

Cloudmist Peak secures the Heavenly Splendor Treasure Tree. After Ye Yingxiong delivers the Demon Sword and is repelled by Qin Lian, Song Huangting verifies the transfer and accepts withdrawal from Ten Thousand Swords Manor’s internal conflict 34 38 42 44.

Hidden Trump Card and Resistance

Qin Lian’s Second Grade breakthrough gives Pure Yang an unexpected advantage. Song Huangting and Mu Xingchui keep it secret, reasoning that an unanticipated expert offers greater strategic value than another publicly known grandmaster 43.

After Qin Lian returns, his spar with Li Wangxu ends in a draw without his using Blood Burning. The leadership adopts a complementary arrangement: Li Wangxu operates openly while Qin Lian remains behind the scenes. Their immediate priority is to locate Blood-Blade Luo Chong and disrupt the Bureau’s destabilization campaign without attracting its full force 47 48.

Shan Hui subsequently recognizes Qin Lian’s Fire Spirit Dao Body and grants him access to Chi Xiao True Person’s protected residence and inheritance, reopening a path toward the sect’s former Spirit Refining strength 49 50.
