Background / History

Warring States Period and Konoha’s Founding

Madara repeatedly fought Hashirama Senju during the conflict between the Uchiha and Senju clans. His younger brother, Izuna, supported his resistance until Tobirama Senju struck him with Flying Thunder God Slash. Izuna’s death precipitated Madara’s Eternal Mangekyō Sharingan awakening, but even that power failed to secure victory over Hashirama 548.

When Hashirama proposed peace, Madara demanded that he kill himself as proof of his sincerity. Hashirama immediately prepared to comply, shocking Madara into stopping him. Their reconciliation enabled the alliance of shinobi clans that became Konoha, whose name Madara chose 548.

Madara understood that Hashirama would become the village’s first leader and that he would succeed him. After overhearing Tobirama’s opposition and realizing that the village’s other ninja did not support him either, he came to believe that Konoha had betrayed him 548.

Departure and the Valley of the End

Madara abandoned Konoha and took the Uchiha Clan’s Gunbai with him. He later returned with the Nine-Tails under his control and fought Hashirama at the Valley of the End 35 78.

Both combatants approached exhaustion. With Madara no longer able to maintain his Sharingan, Hashirama used a Wood Clone to deceive him and delivered the decisive backstab 547. Although publicly believed dead, Madara revived through Izanagi. The corpse Tobirama had secured in a laboratory was ultimately revealed to be a Shadow Clone 90 469.

Hidden Survival and Succession

In hiding, Madara awakened the Rinnegan and secretly transplanted it into the young Nagato before the Second Shinobi World War. He then prolonged his failing life for more than a decade using chakra supplied by the Demonic Statue of the Outer Path 385.

He also controlled the Third Mizukage and manipulated Kirigakure, acting behind its war with Konoha toward the end of the Third Shinobi World War 491 526.

After secretly observing the Uchiha Clan, Madara selected Obito for his unusually strong emotions. He manipulated events to awaken Obito’s Mangekyō Sharingan, trained him, and entrusted him with his techniques, resources, and control of Kirigakure. Only after largely completing that training did Madara willingly die, around the end of the Third Shinobi World War 385 526 527 541.

Eye of the Moon Plan

Madara intended to use Infinite Tsukuyomi to establish eternal peace, with himself directing the Eye of the Moon Plan. Obito shared the broad objective but wanted to carry it out personally to create a world containing Rin Nohara, making Madara’s return a threat to his own ambitions 261.

Madara believed Black Zetsu was a chakra entity he had created through Yin-Yang Release to monitor Obito. He did not know Black Zetsu’s true identity or the actual origin of White Zetsu 393 527.

Appearance

  • Rejuvenated reanimated form: Long black hair and blood-red armor in the style worn during the Warring States Period 525.
  • Reanimation traits: Black sclera and cracks across his body; his Sharingan glow scarlet 526 531.
  • Rinnegan: Deep-purple eyes patterned with concentric rings, replacing his Eternal Mangekyō Sharingan’s black-and-red patterns when activated 546.
  • Elderly form: White-haired and skeletal. His original corpse was extremely withered, with sunken features and empty eye sockets following the transplantation of his Rinnegan 385 560.

Personality

Madara is domineering, intensely proud, and dismissive of almost everyone’s strength. Orochimaru finds that appeasing his arrogance is safer than challenging him, while Madara’s killing intent alone forces the Sannin to retreat a step. Nevertheless, Madara acknowledges Orochimaru’s talent for mastering and improving Impure World Reincarnation 526 529.

His attachment to Hashirama combines affection, rivalry, and decades of resentment. He initially insists that only Hashirama deserves the title “God of Shinobi” and refuses to believe that Minamoto defeated him. He is pleased that an Uchiha became Hokage, but that pride does not overcome his refusal to accept another Uchiha as Hashirama’s equal 530.

Madara genuinely seeks peace, but pursues it through coercion, manipulation, and imposed illusion. Minamoto recognizes the sincerity of his goal while condemning both his actions and Infinite Tsukuyomi’s lethal consequences 538 539.

His confidence does not entirely eliminate caution. Before confronting Hashirama and Minamoto, he considers Konoha’s combined strength and the limitations of his reanimated body 539 540.

Abilities & Skills

Sharingan and Genjutsu

Madara’s Eternal Mangekyō Sharingan can overpower both a jinchūriki and the tailed beast within him 533.

  • Controls Gaara and Shukaku with a glance, then maintains control over the fully unsealed One-Tail 533 543.
  • Previously enslaved Kurama and held a summoning contract with him 317 538 541.
  • Controlled the Third Mizukage through genjutsu 491 526.
  • His original summoning access to Kurama ceases to function after Minamoto isolates the old contract 317 540.

Susanoo

Madara manifests a deep-blue chakra giant and developed Majestic Attire: Susanoo, which encases a tailed beast in armor 408 544.

  • Majestic Attire: Originally devised for Kurama; used on Shukaku during the Land of Wind battle 408 544.
  • Chakra weapons: Armored arms wield light swords capable of cutting through Hashirama’s ordinary Wood Dragon 544.
  • Yasaka Magatama: Launches explosive chakra projectiles individually, in linked attacks, or across a wide area 408 544.
  • Limits: Hashirama’s senjutsu-enhanced Wood Golem and Wood Dragon force the armored Shukaku onto the defensive and crack its armor 545.

Rinnegan

Madara retains access to the Rinnegan through Orochimaru’s reanimation despite having transplanted his original eyes during life 533.

  • Shinra Tensei: Repels physical targets and ninjutsu. Madara destroys the Wood Golem’s hand and deflects a descending Gate of the Great God 546 547.
  • Banshō Ten’in: Pulls targets toward him, including Hashirama and Minamoto 546 550.
  • Sealing Technique: Absorption Seal: Absorbs incoming chakra attacks, including Minamoto’s Blaze Release 551 552.
  • Absorption limit: Absorbing the flames does not prevent their radiated heat from damaging and evaporating his reanimated body 552.
  • Mastery: His control of the Rinnegan surpasses Nagato’s; Minamoto’s Amenotokotachi nevertheless matches his Shinra Tensei in a direct clash 546 551.

Limbo: Border Jail

Madara’s exclusive Rinnegan dōjutsu produces shadow clones that can attack without being noticed by Hashirama 547.

  • Uses a Limbo clone to stab Hashirama, then switches places with it to appear behind him 547.
  • Deploys four clones against Minamoto 553.
  • Counter: Minamoto draws all four clones into the Kamui dimension, neutralizing the attack 553.

Nature Transformation and Yin-Yang Release

Madara combines large-scale elemental attacks with techniques developed through his own research 407 409.

  • Fire Release: Majestic Destroyer Flame: His flames are overwhelmed and ignited by Minamoto’s Blaze Release 551 552.
  • Wood Release: Wood Dragon Technique: Creates a chakra-absorbing wooden dragon, surprising Hashirama and Tsunade. Minamoto’s senjutsu-enhanced Blaze Release destroys it almost immediately 551 552.
  • Yin Release: Lightning Dispatch: An SS-rank technique he developed to construct lightning from mental energy; deployed without hand seals as a net of purple lightning 409 547.
  • Storm Release: Light Fang: Emits a concentrated cutting beam from his mouth. It slices through Hashirama’s senjutsu-enhanced wooden bridge, but its limited range allows Hashirama to escape 547.
  • Chakra Black Rods: Yin-Yang Release receivers that he forms from his palms and repeatedly drives into Hashirama to incapacitate him 409 548 550.

Ninjutsu Research and Instruction

Madara’s private collection contains high-level ninjutsu, forbidden techniques, kekkei genkai research, and extensive records on dōjutsu 407 408 409.

  • Recorded Hashirama’s Flowering Forest Emergence, Deep Forest Emergence, and Wood Dragon Technique 407.
  • Preserved a version of Sage Mode that uses Hashirama Cells to absorb natural energy; its presence in his collection does not establish that he uses it in the documented battles 407.
  • Documented Susanoo derivatives, Rinnegan abilities, and multiple Yin-Yang Release techniques 407 408 409.
  • Taught Obito nearly everything he could transmit, including Yin-Yang Release and Six Paths: Ten-Tails Coffin Seal 541.

Equipment / Weapons / Items

  • Gunbai: Uchiha heirloom and Madara’s personal war fan, carved from a branch of the God Tree. The S-rank weapon absorbs chakra, converts it into Wind Release chakra, and can reflect Tailed Beast Bombs. Obito inherited it; Minamoto later captured it and temporarily returned it through Hashirama before their battle 35 208 543.
  • Demonic Statue of the Outer Path: Supplied the chakra that kept the elderly Madara alive for more than a decade beyond his failing natural lifespan 385.
  • Kurama’s summoning contract: Passed to Obito with Madara’s legacy. Minamoto later isolated Madara’s contract with a Contract Seal 317 541.
  • Private ninjutsu scrolls: Acquired by Minamoto and subsequently shared with Konoha’s leadership and selected subordinates 407 441.

Relationships

  • Hashirama Senju — Closest friend and lifelong rival. Their reconciliation made Konoha possible, but their opposing paths led to the Valley of the End. Madara finally defeats him after returning with the Rinnegan 548 550.
  • Izuna Uchiha — Younger brother and steadfast supporter. His death triggers Madara’s Eternal Mangekyō Sharingan awakening 548.
  • Tobirama Senju — Enemy who mortally wounded Izuna and opposed Madara’s succession as Hokage. Madara later returns through Tobirama’s reanimation technique 526 548.
  • Obito Uchiha — Chosen successor and extensively trained subordinate. Madara becomes contemptuous after learning that Obito was repeatedly defeated and captured despite possessing Kamui 526 527 541.
  • Black Zetsu — Supposed manifestation of Madara’s will, assigned to watch Obito. In reality, Madara misunderstands both his identity and his agenda 378 393 527.
  • Nagato — Secret recipient of Madara’s Rinnegan. After reanimation, Madara intends to use him to perform Rinne Rebirth and recover his original eyes 385 527.
  • Orochimaru — Reanimator whose technical skill Madara acknowledges, but whom he intimidates and physically mistreats rather than accepts as a master 525 529.
  • Uchiha Minamoto — Younger clansman, Fifth Hokage, and decisive opponent. Minamoto dismantles Madara’s inherited resources, destroys his reanimated body, and later brings him back in elderly form 540 541 554 560.
  • Kurama — Formerly controlled tailed beast and summoning partner. Kurama resents Madara and the Sharingan 317.
  • Shukaku and Gaara — Captured and controlled as Madara’s replacement tailed-beast fighting force after he learns Kurama is unavailable 533 543 544.

Story Role / Major Arcs

Legacy and Impersonation

Before Madara’s physical return, Obito operates under his name. Uchiha elders initially regard “Lord Madara” as their strongest prospective fighter in the coup, while Minamoto publicly rejects the masked man’s identity as an insult to the clan’s forebear 23 89.

Minamoto later exposes Obito’s responsibility for the recent Nine-Tails attack and Kirigakure’s Fourth Mizukage being controlled. Those crimes committed under the stolen identity are distinct from Madara’s earlier control of Kurama and the Third Mizukage 323 491.

Orochimaru’s Reanimation

Black Zetsu recruits Orochimaru to improve Impure World Reincarnation and eventually supplies Madara’s aged, eyeless corpse. Orochimaru modifies the remains and sacrifice to recreate a younger, powerful body, but hesitates because he cannot reliably control a shinobi of Madara’s caliber 285 385 525.

Once revived, Madara learns that Obito has failed and Black Zetsu has disappeared. He plans to locate Nagato, regain his Rinnegan, and obtain a complete living resurrection through Rinne Rebirth 526 527.

News that Minamoto defeated Hashirama provokes disbelief. After Jiraiya confirms Hashirama’s return and location, Madara heads for the Land of Wind, taking Gaara with him 530 533.

Land of Wind Battle

Madara reunites with Hashirama and challenges him to test his reanimated strength. Attempts to summon Kurama and the Gunbai both fail because Minamoto has already taken control of those resources. Hashirama subsequently returns the fan to him for the fight 539 540 541 543.

Using Susanoo-armored Shukaku, Madara initially struggles against Hashirama’s Sage Mode. His Rinnegan and Limbo reverse the battle: he ambushes Hashirama from behind and incapacitates him with Black Rods, securing his first victory over his lifelong rival 544 545 546 547 548 550.

Minamoto then seals Shukaku, counters Madara’s repulsion, destroys his Wood Dragon, and removes his Limbo clones with Kamui. Sunlight Shines Everywhere annihilates Madara’s body and returns him to the Pure Land 551 552 553 554.

Second Reanimation

Minamoto had intended to remove Madara’s Rinnegan and seal him rather than kill him, since Orochimaru could simply reanimate him again. After the unexpected destruction, he resolves to obtain the resurrection materials himself 555.

He subsequently reanimates Madara as a white-haired, skeletal elder rather than restoring Orochimaru’s rejuvenated version. The provided events end with Madara regaining consciousness and recognizing Minamoto 560.
