Background / History
Childhood and Kannabi Bridge
Obito’s parents died in war, and his grandmother raised him. He later became a student of Minato Namikaze alongside Kakashi Hatake and Rin Nohara. Although his Academy performance was unremarkable, he distinguished himself while protecting his comrades during the Third Shinobi World War 84 198 205.
At the Battle of Kannabi Bridge, Obito was pinned beneath a boulder and believed himself beyond saving. He gave his intact left Sharingan to Kakashi, who had recently lost an eye. Konoha subsequently remembered him as a fallen hero, unaware that he had survived with Madara’s assistance 166 192 205.
Rin’s Death and Madara’s Successor
Obito witnessed Kakashi pierce Rin’s heart. The experience awakened Kamui and convinced him that the existing world was hell. His central ambition became creating another world in which Rin lived 75 87.
Madara had selected Obito for emotions unusually intense even among the Uchiha. He manipulated the circumstances leading to Obito’s Mangekyō awakening, supplied extensive instruction, and entrusted him with his legacy. Obito adopted Madara’s identity but ultimately wanted to carry out the Eye of the Moon Plan himself rather than restore his benefactor 261 284 526 541.
Nine-Tails’ Attack and Kirigakure
At fourteen, Obito unleashed Kurama against Konoha and fought Minato. The attack occurred on October 10 of Konoha Year 51 and caused the deaths of Minato, Kushina Uzumaki, and many villagers and ninja 4 307.
Using Madara’s name, Obito also controlled Fourth Mizukage Karatachi Yagura through Sharingan genjutsu, keeping Kirigakure under Blood Mist rule. He later encouraged the Uchiha leadership to stage a coup against Konoha, treating the clan as an expendable instrument of revenge rather than caring whether it survived 24 323.
Appearance
- Scarred face: His exposed face is covered in twisted scars 261 305.
- Masks: Wears a tiger-patterned mask while impersonating Madara at Naka Shrine and an orange spiral mask during his Akatsuki period 83 229.
- Reconstructed body: His right side is made from Hashirama-derived cells; his right arm later contains additional Sharingan implants 84 192.
- Reanimated form: Appears with a fractured body, scarlet Mangekyō Sharingan, and a black cloak patterned with red clouds 399.
Personality
As a child, Obito was cheerful, helpful, and deeply committed to his comrades. Hiruzen remembered his enthusiasm for good deeds, while Kakashi adopted his belief that abandoning comrades was worse than breaking ninja rules 12 220 286.
After Rin’s death, that attachment became an obsession with replacing reality. He claimed not to care about the existing world, yet continued to direct resentment toward Kakashi, Konoha, and Kirigakure. His willingness to sacrifice his own clan sharply contradicted his former ideals 24 305.
Obito’s confidence rested heavily on Kamui. He repeatedly declared himself invincible, only to become increasingly fearful after Minamoto bypassed its defenses. Eventually, he admitted that he could not defeat Minamoto alone. Even after reanimation, he sought to leave the Hokage to Pain rather than face him personally 86 192 208 268 401.
He was also possessive of his role in the Eye of the Moon Plan. His distrust of Black Zetsu stemmed partly from the possibility that Madara’s return would place the plan—and the world he wanted for Rin—outside his control 261.
Abilities & Skills
Kamui
Obito’s signature Mangekyō dōjutsu manipulates space through a shared alternate dimension. Reuniting both eyes completes the technique and increases its activation speed 178 192 193.
- Right eye: Provides close-range intangibility by transferring his body, or parts of it, into the Kamui dimension 178 209.
- Left eye: Performs long-range transport and can distort a target’s surrounding space to tear it apart 192 193.
- Dimensional movement: Transports himself, other people, and objects into or out of the dimension 87 166 192.
- Critical limitation: He cannot use intangibility while already inside the Kamui dimension 207.
- Countermeasures: Minamoto’s gravitational attacks breach its spatial protection. Once Minamoto gains access to the dimension, transferred body parts are vulnerable to attacks from within it 87 209.
Susanoo
With both Mangekyō Sharingan reunited, Obito manifests a Perfect Susanoo armored like a Karasu Tengu and equipped with enormous wings 193.
- Chakra blade: Wields a giant sword capable of carving a deep trench into an island 306.
- Kamui One-Sword Slash: Adds spatial distortion to the sword’s edge, leaving a dark rift along its path 306.
- Kamui Shuriken: Charges enormous Fūma Shuriken with space-rending power 421.
- Limits: Minamoto burns through its defenses and severs its chakra weapon 193 306.
Izanagi
Obito uses the forbidden dōjutsu Izanagi to survive otherwise fatal injuries by sacrificing Sharingan 85 192 208.
- Survives Amaterasu, repeated bisections, and decapitation through its use 85 192 208.
- Exhausts the Sharingan implanted in his right arm during his repeated defeats 208.
- His later account also establishes that he ultimately sacrificed his own Mangekyō Sharingan as revival resources before his execution 401.
Hashirama-Derived Cells and Wood Release
Obito’s reconstructed body combines Uchiha abilities with Hashirama-derived tissue, later identified as White Zetsu-derived cells 84 208 548.
- Regeneration: Reconnects his bisected body with White Zetsu’s assistance and repeatedly repairs tissue damaged by Mei’s acidic mist 87 304.
- Wood Release: Possesses the First Hokage’s wood-based abilities 208 209.
- Hand-seal limitation: Losing his right arm prevents him from forming the seals needed for wood clones during his first escape from Minamoto 87.
- Ocular support: The cells rapidly repair damaged chakra pathways around his eye during extreme ocular exertion 306.
Sharingan and Genjutsu
Obito uses the Sharingan for perception and sustained mental control 304 323.
- Controls Yagura and Kurama, enabling his actions against Kirigakure and Konoha 323.
- Tracks successive waves of weapons and ninjutsu during Kirigakure’s coordinated assault 304.
- Cannot see through matter; dense mist obscures his view despite his ability to perceive chakra 304.
Ninjutsu Knowledge
Madara taught Obito extensively, including advanced techniques such as Yin–Yang Release and Six Paths: Ten-Tails Coffin Seal. These are identified as inherited knowledge rather than techniques he demonstrates in the documented battles 541.
- Fire Release: Blast Wave Wild Dance: Identified as the sole technique Obito developed himself over those years 405.
- Rinnegan instruction: Under Madara’s identity, he guided Nagato’s development of the Rinnegan and taught the sealing technique Phantom Dragon Nine Consort Seals 268.
Reanimated Body
Orochimaru’s Impure World Reincarnation restores Obito after his execution 400.
- Provides bodily reconstruction and nearly limitless chakra, but does not inherently raise his raw strength 401 421.
- Allows him to attack with Kamui even after Minato destroys most of his body, leaving only his head 425 426.
- Remains vulnerable to sealing; Minamoto ultimately binds his soul inside the reanimated body permanently 426.
Equipment / Weapons / Items
- Gunbai — War fan inherited from Madara. Obito retrieves it before investigating the compromised Kamui dimension, but Minamoto takes it after beheading him 207 208 390.
- Spare Sharingan — Keeps a reserve eye and later implants additional eyes into his right arm for Izanagi 83 192.
- Nine-Tails Summoning Contract — Inherited Madara’s contract scroll and became Kurama’s second summoning contractor 541.
- Masks — Conceal his identity while operating as Madara and Tobi 83 229.
Relationships
- Rin Nohara — Former teammate and the focus of his desire to remake the world. Witnessing her death triggers his Mangekyō awakening 75 87.
- Kakashi Hatake — Former teammate and recipient of his left Sharingan. Obito initially regards the eye as their remaining bond, then reclaims it to obtain dual Kamui. Kakashi ultimately rejects the criminal as the Obito he once knew 192 305 327.
- Minato Namikaze — Former teacher, opponent during the Nine-Tails’ Attack, and participant in his final defeat 198 307 425 426.
- Uchiha Minamoto — Cousin and principal enemy. Minamoto repeatedly defeats him, exposes his identity, orders his execution, and permanently seals his reanimated form 233 307 426.
- Madara Uchiha — Rescuer, manipulator, teacher, and predecessor. Obito inherits his identity and resources but resists bringing him back to take control of the Eye of the Moon Plan 166 261 526 541.
- Black Zetsu and White Zetsu — Collaborators who support his operations and recovery. Obito distrusts Black Zetsu as a representative of Madara’s will 87 208 261.
- Nagato / Pain — Akatsuki leader and uneasy ally. Obito values his Rinnegan as essential to the Eye of the Moon Plan and joins his attack on the Five Kage Summit 400 401.
- Kisame Hoshigaki — Loyal follower who remains unconcerned by the exposure of Obito’s identity and continues to regard him as worth following 229 230.
- Orochimaru — Covets Obito’s combination of Uchiha and Senju powers, then reanimates him after his execution 229 376 400.
- Uchiha Itachi — Obito kills his teammates in an earlier encounter and later unsuccessfully tempts him to abandon Konoha 167.
Story Role / Major Arcs
Conflict with Minamoto
At Naka Shrine, Obito pressures Fugaku and the elders to announce their coup before Shisui returns. Minamoto later ambushes him there with Amaterasu, forcing an Izanagi revival. The pursuit reaches the Valley of the End, where Minamoto’s gravitational blade breaches Kamui and bisects him 24 83 85 86 87.
During a later confrontation connected to Kirigakure’s invasion, Obito retrieves Kakashi’s eye and unveils dual Kamui and Perfect Susanoo. Neither prevents further defeats. Minamoto subsequently enters the Kamui dimension, kills him again, and takes the Gunbai, exhausting Obito’s arm-mounted Sharingan 192 193 194 208.
Akatsuki Membership and Exposure
Unable to handle Minamoto alone, Obito decides to join Akatsuki openly rather than remain behind the scenes. His intended Tobi disguise collapses when Konoha and Kirigakure publicize his identity and place a combined bounty of two hundred million ryō on him 209 228 229.
His first official meeting reveals that several members covet his bounty, eyes, or body. Rather than gaining a dependable force against Minamoto, he finds himself surrounded by potential enemies. He repeatedly considers making Minamoto the organization’s common enemy 229 261.
Capture and Execution
Obito and Kakuzu capture Takigakure’s Seven-Tails jinchūriki before Obito turns toward Kirigakure’s Six-Tails. On the deserted island, he confronts Kakashi, sends him into Kamui, and battles Minamoto after the Hokage rescues him 286 305 306.
Minamoto captures him with Amber Sealing and announces a public execution for the Nine-Tails’ Attack. Displayed in Konoha, Obito is pelted with refuse while his isolation within the seal erodes his will. His subsequent execution by beheading is confirmed later 307 327 376 400.
Reanimation and Final Sealing
Orochimaru reanimates Obito, who joins Pain’s planned attack on the Five Kage Summit to protect the Rinnegan. He proposes handling the other Kage while Pain confronts Minamoto 400 401.
Their attack is met by Minamoto and his assembled allies. Minato destroys most of Obito’s body with a Rasengan, and Kushina overwhelms what remains. Minamoto finishes the battle with Sage Art: Amber Sealing, trapping Obito’s soul inside his reanimated body so that it cannot be transferred or revived again 421 425 426.
