After accepting the cigar Lin Feng handed him, the soldier thanked him, then made sure to share it with the men beside him. Ordinary soldiers like them were not issued cigars, and even tobacco was in very short supply.
Soon, it was time for supplies. Several logistics personnel pushing carts dropped off food and supplies of various weapons and ammunition, then left.
Through the narrow firing slit, Lin Feng watched the dim sky outside. For some reason, he felt an inexplicable sense of suffocation.
"Hey, squad leader, want to play Monopoly?"
The Allied Forces were resting now and would not attack. This was also the only time in the day they could relax.
Playing cards were their only form of entertainment, too.
Lin Feng happened to have played Monopoly before, so he quickly got the hang of it.
Happy times were always brief. An hour and a half later, the Allied Forces attacked again.
The soldiers in Lin Feng's squad immediately returned to their positions, and countless tongues of flame spat from the bunker.
Boatload after boatload of Allied soldiers who had just landed were instantly riddled with bullets.
The heavy howitzers at the beachhead also began bombarding the amphibious tanks the Allied Forces had landed.
Since Lin Feng also had a mission assigned by the system, he took control of a machine gun as well.
But the distance was too great. Even with Firearms Proficiency, Lin Feng could not hit every shot. Soon, the barrel overheated.
The loader assisting beside him hurriedly replaced the barrel to ensure their fire would not be interrupted.
Just as Lin Feng was laying down suppressing fire on the crowd, he suddenly felt a pain in his cheek. He reached up to touch it and found it a little wet.
"Fuck, I got hit even here?"
Lin Feng touched the wound on his face, feeling utterly helpless. A stray bullet had probably grazed him. Still, it was better than taking a bullet straight to the head.
"Take over the machine gun. I'm going to treat my wound."
Lin Feng pointed at the soldier as he spoke.
After returning to his quarters, Lin Feng examined himself in the mirror used for tidying his appearance.
Fortunately, although the wound was deep, it was not particularly long. At least he had not been disfigured.
He took sulfonamide powder from his medical kit and sprinkled it over the wound, then gave it a simple bandage.
Even his bandaging technique came with the Wilderness Survival skill.
After that simple treatment to prevent infection, Lin Feng returned to the firing slit.
This time, however, he did not choose a machine gun, instead using his issued G43 Semi-Automatic Rifle.
After another several hours of fierce fighting, the Allied Forces' assault was repelled again.
However, the Allied Forces had not achieved nothing. After a long period of nonstop bombing, their bombers had finally destroyed two exposed pillboxes.
The news left the imperial soldiers, who had felt victory was assured, gripped by fear.
Two supposedly impregnable pillboxes had actually been blown apart.
At that moment, ships and aircraft were still bombarding the fortifications in Normandy.
Shells rained down as though they cost nothing.
However, none of this had much to do with Lin Feng, who was hiding in the bunker.
For now, his position was relatively safe. Apart from some shaking and ringing in his ears, there was nothing else wrong with it.
While the soldiers in the bunkers rested, bombers loaded with incendiaries braved the dense antiaircraft fire and dropped countless aerial bombs bearing red markings onto the bunker positions that had already been marked.
Boom!!
More than a dozen enormous aerial bombs exploded above Lin Feng's bunker. A moment later, fierce flames blazed across its roof.
Although they could not directly harm the enemies inside the bunker.
Given enough time, however, the inside would become as hot as a steamer, making it completely uninhabitable.
Eating canned food inside, Lin Feng also felt that the temperature in the bunker seemed to be rising rapidly.
"Squad leader, two incendiaries were dropped on our bunker. Headquarters ordered us to hold, but if this keeps up, the men will be steamed alive!"
"Fuck! Then what are we waiting for? Get out, now!"
Lin Feng slammed down his can. No wonder it kept getting hotter. His head was already covered in sweat, and the shirt he wore underneath had long since been soaked through.
"But, squad leader! Headquarters ordered us to keep holding!"
"Do you want to die?"
Lin Feng asked the rather stubborn soldier.
The soldier shook his head.
"Then move. Anyone who wants to die can stay here. We're abandoning this pillbox and moving to another position immediately!"
"But, squad leader, if the military police find out, we'll be severely punished."
"Don't worry. I have a way."
Lin Feng patted the soldier on the shoulder as he spoke.
Then he led the remaining soldiers out of the bunker at speed. Flames covered the entrance too, but fortunately, the fire there was not intense.
The empire would certainly lose this battle, and from this point onward, it would suffer one defeat after another. So the soldier's concerns would not be an issue. After all, whether these soldiers could even survive until then was still unknown.
Leading his squad out of the bunker, Lin Feng felt a little dizzy at his first sight of the chaos outside. Still, he quickly ran toward the pillbox closest to him. It looked reasonably safe; at least it had not received special attention from the incendiaries.
He had already prepared his explanation, too.
Just as they were about to reach the fortification, a mortar shell landed a short distance behind Lin Feng.
Two soldiers following him were instantly blown into several pieces. The sight left Lin Feng feeling a little sick to his stomach.
Still, he quickly ran inside the fortification.
"Hey! Are you the reinforcements?!"
Lin Feng had never expected the officer stationed here to provide him with an excuse before he even opened his mouth.
Naturally, Lin Feng agreed at once, and the officer did not suspect anything. After they introduced themselves, Lin Feng sent his soldiers to relieve the other man's troops.
"I only just requested reinforcements. I never expected you to arrive so quickly. I thought my request for help would just get tossed aside. After all, the empire's situation isn't exactly ideal."
The man was talkative, too, unlike a conventional soldier of the Third Reich.
Lin Feng felt that the man before him seemed a little too slick.
Moreover, Lin Feng could not clearly sense a soldier's bearing about him.
"Conrad, where are you from?"
"Oh, I'm from Hamburg. I enlisted three years ago, and now I've finally worked my way up to a junior officer's position. Hahaha."
Conrad spoke without the slightest hesitation. What Lin Feng did not notice was that Conrad's back was already drenched in sweat.
"I see. I'm much the same, though I enlisted from a small village. You probably haven't heard its name, but it's beautiful there. Oh, and I have a fiancée. Look."
