Background / History
Mortal origins and transmigration
Jiang Yi’s present consciousness comes from another world, where he worked as a secretary. By his first appearance, he has occupied his new body for seven or eight days. Its original owner was an orphan from a reasonably comfortable household in Guniu Town who sold his family property to pursue the sword-immortal ideal at a Dao Academy 1 13.
The original Jiang Yi possessed lower-vehicle aptitude. After three years at the academy and four years of cultivation as a Qianji Sect Mortal Laborer, he had barely approached perfection of the First Level of Qi Refining 1 7.
Escaping Crimson Flame Peak’s labor hierarchy
Jiang Yi’s ambitions sharpen after Xu Yan beats the laborer Little Gao to death and the sect assigns a monetary value to the remains. He resolves to become valuable talent rather than remain expendable material. Using the Heavenly Book, he obtains a hidden ninth-grade fire-control manual and cultivates Yang Xun’s favor 11 13.
His promotion to Inspection Officer frees most of his time for cultivation. When the Heavenly Book reveals Dong Ba and Zhang Chao’s hostility, he borrows money, kills Dong Ba, severs Zhang Chao’s legs, and reports the incident to Yang Xun with an offer of compensation 13 20.
Cat Master and the Inner Peaks
At Three Harmonies Ward, Jiang Yi seeks medicines, opportunities, and a stronger inheritance. He eventually becomes Profound Mystery True Person’s disciple by promising to feed and care for the kitten. Cat Master reveals that lower Dharma Lineages’ dependence on Dao Ginseng contaminates cultivators’ life and nature, obstructing complete Foundation Establishment 47 67.
Upon entering Qianji Sect’s Inner Peaks, Jiang Yi avoids choosing between Sun-Watching Peak and Fate-Watching Peak by volunteering for the Merit Oversight Court. The appointment grants him a first-class stipend, thirty Essence-Nourishing Pills, a Black Shadow Garment, and one major merit 97 98.
He also intervenes when Sui Liushu threatens Yang Xun. Rather than accept his god-grandfather’s proposed mutual destruction, Jiang Yi devises a plan to lower Sui’s guard and turn the danger against him 112 113 117.
Fengdu and the emergence of Lesser Yang
During the Lujiang assignment, Jiang Yi investigates the Huang and Wang Clans’ connection to the Nether Spring Sect and its attempts to open a gateway to Fengdu. He uses the summoned spirit Jiang Shang to investigate without exposing himself directly, then obtains the Innate Fire Virtue Body within Fengdu 128 133 150.
Qiao Yu explains that accepting the Empress’s marriage proposal will expose him as Lesser Yang’s new lord and draw him into the Eight Demonic Sects’ arrangements. Jiang Yi knowingly enters the contest, recognizing that he will need powerful Dharma Lineages behind him to oppose Sun 169 170 171.
During the ensuing Mysterious Thunder ordeal, his body is nearly destroyed. Upside Down responds to his defiance, disperses the ninth thunderbolt, and allows him to wound the True Lord Thunder Pivot while still at Qi Refining. Lesser Yang’s Golden Nature subsequently merges with his Divine Sense 176 177 178.
Xiantian Sect’s Dao Child
Jiang Yi becomes the Xiantian Sect’s only outsider Dao Child in ten thousand years and the Eight Sects’ only Dao Child appointed while still at Qi Refining. His new rank also makes him an obstacle to other disciples’ advancement and to established factional arrangements 204 241.
He begins building an administration at the Eternal Bright Heavenly Pool, appointing Chang Jing as chief steward and employing He Shouzheng to manage three halls. Against hostile factions, he combines selective pardons with exemplary punishment: two True Lord talismans kill the fifth-level Foundation Establishment elder Luo Qingya, while useful former opponents are spared 204 208 243.
Crouching Dragon Ravine and Foundation Establishment
Seeking Water Beneath Kan, Jiang Yi enters Crouching Dragon Ravine despite its connection to Ji Fuyao’s execution of the Dragon Son Yazi. He kills Xuan Guang and confronts a realm-bound manifestation of Ji Fuyao, deliberately enduring danger to bring forth the medicine needed for his advancement 207 218 219.
After reaching grand perfection of Qi Refining, the Shell Pass blocks his Dao Foundation attempt. His search for Ziwu Fire leads him to Yao Yun, an orphan of Daye’s imperial clan. He heals her and requires her to pursue vengeance through her own training rather than simply restoring her dynasty for her 239 253 258.
Jiang Yi subsequently forges his Dao Foundation, develops fire profundities, and breaks the Mortal Realm’s confinement to become a Foundation Establishment True Person. Later study of the Great Yan Dynasty leads him to recognize that Fire Virtue’s essence is not merely burning, but shining 265 275 276 291.
Appearance
- Early clothing: A dingy gray padded Daoist robe worn during his time as a Mortal Laborer 1.
- After ritual refinement: Bright eyes, jade-like flesh, and a harmonious presence that makes others inclined to approach him 56.
- Build and features: Tall and straight, with lustrous skin and features compared to jade wrought into golden form 120.
- Dao Embryo refinement: At great mastery, his body resembles an exquisite jade statue 165.
- Later attire: A water-blue Daoist robe, wooden hairpin, and the black-sheathed Upside Down on his back; frequently carries the calico Cat Master in his arms 188.
Personality
Jiang Yi is meticulous, socially observant, and willing to cultivate patronage. He consciously applies experience from his former life as a secretary: arriving early, remembering preferences, offering gifts, and presenting the right attitude. His initial approach to Yang Xun is explicitly calculated, although their bond later becomes deeply personal 13 15 112.
His caution does not prevent decisive violence. He prefers discovering threats early and eliminating them before they endanger his cultivation or companions. As Dao Child, he becomes increasingly pragmatic about factional politics, sparing talented opponents when their cooperation serves him better than punishment 117 208 243.
He remains loyal to those who helped him rise. He refuses to abandon Yang Xun, gives practical parting gifts to his former laborer companions, and tells Cat Master that meeting it was his greatest cultivation opportunity even while facing death 112 113 176.
His central ambition is to escape being used as disposable material. Even the discovery that greater powers are shaping his advancement does not extinguish his determination. He accepts the possibility of death on the Dao Path, but wants that life to remain recognizably his own 11 176 286 287.
