Background / History

Clan upbringing and expulsion

Yu Xiaogang was born the second son of Yu Yuanzhen, leader of the Blue Lightning Tyrant Dragon Clan. He received an excellent education, abundant resources, and heavenly treasures, but awakened only half a level of Innate Soul Power. After reaching level 29 without being able to advance further, he was expelled and struck from the clan’s rolls 7 32 78.

Lu Chen disputes the idea that Yu Xiaogang simply inherited a hopeless Martial Soul. His explanation identifies its underlying potential as the Golden Sacred Dragon and attributes its degeneration to Yu Xiaogang’s inadequate physique. His suggestion that Yu Xiaogang neglected physical training before awakening is presented as an inference, rather than a witnessed event 32.

Relationship with Bibi Dong

After his expulsion, Yu Xiaogang met Bibi Dong when she was seventeen or eighteen and serving as Spirit Hall’s Saintess. She responded to his apparent wisdom and gentleness, and they planned to seek Qian Xunji’s approval for marriage after she became a Soul Saint 33.

Qian Xunji opposed the relationship, sexually assaulted Bibi Dong, and later threatened Yu Xiaogang’s life. To protect him, Bibi Dong broke off their relationship and forced him to leave Spirit City 33.

During their relationship, Bibi Dong supplied him with Spirit Hall documents that he could not access himself. Lu Chen later accuses him of cultivating her affection to obtain knowledge and status. Bibi Dong’s own recollections of his excitement over the documents lead her to accept that he had exploited her, although Lu Chen’s further suspicion that he deliberately sought an escape from the relationship remains conjectural 30 34.

Golden Iron Triangle and failed wedding

Yu Xiaogang traveled with Flender and Liu Erlong as part of the Golden Iron Triangle. Both men developed feelings for Liu Erlong, who chose Yu Xiaogang; Flender withdrew and gave them his blessing 37 38.

Their wedding ended when Yu Luomian arrived and revealed that the couple were cousins. Yu Xiaogang fled, Liu Erlong was prevented from following, and Flender failed to bring him back 37.

Lu Chen later argues that Yu Xiaogang probably already knew Liu Erlong’s parentage and used the relationship to retaliate against his clan. Liu Erlong confirms the events surrounding the interrupted wedding and comes to believe she was manipulated, but his prior knowledge and precise motives are not independently demonstrated in the supplied account 37.

Appearance

  • Build: Average height and somewhat thin 77.
  • Age impression: Appears forty or fifty years old 77.
  • Face and hair: Round face, ordinary features, a crew cut, and a short beard 77.
  • Bearing: Commonly clasps his hands behind his back and projects an indolent, dispirited air 77.
  • Later distinguishing mark: A lasting facial scar following the Mandala Snake hunt; he subsequently hopes a powerful Healing Soul Master might remove it 96 97 107.

Personality

Yu Xiaogang is intensely protective of his reputation as “Grandmaster.” Public exposure of his clan history frightens him more than the immediate dispute with Lu Chen, and criticism of his theories provokes increasingly desperate attempts to defend them. He is particularly sensitive to reminders of his low cultivation and expulsion 78 100.

His pride coexists with dependence on others. Although Wu Fang once gave him shelter, Yu Xiaogang privately dismisses the headmaster as beneath his standing once their relationship breaks down. He also abandons his insistence that Tang San must never apologize when confronted with an academy bill he cannot afford 81 105.

His concern for Tang San is not wholly feigned. The disciple’s enthusiastic support genuinely moves him, and he becomes frantic when Tang San is badly beaten during an assessment. Nevertheless, he also views Tang San as the means to vindicate his theories and secure recognition, and knowingly accepts an exaggerated account of his own heroism during the snake hunt 85 96 106 107.

Abilities & Skills

Luo Sanpao

Luo Sanpao is an extremely rare external beast Martial Soul, described as a malignantly mutated, swine-like form. Its combat method relies on gaseous blasts 32 85.

  • Soul Rings: Two yellow Hundred-Year rings 85.
  • Attack limit: Approximately three blasts before its combat strength must be replenished 85 92.
  • Recovery: Eating white radishes accelerates the replenishment of its gaseous attacks 85.
  • Hypnotic mist: Ineffective against the pursuing Mandala Snake because of its strong toxin resistance; it only slightly slows the creature 92.
  • Cultivation restriction: Yu Xiaogang cannot advance beyond level 29 in his documented condition 7 85.

Golden Sacred Dragon Fusion

As the Golden Iron Triangle’s Horn of Wisdom, Yu Xiaogang participates in the Golden Sacred Dragon Martial Soul Fusion Skill with Flender and Liu Erlong 37.

  • The three possess a 99% fusion rate 37.
  • Yu Xiaogang is described as the fusion’s leader and absolute core despite his low individual cultivation 6.
  • The fusion is distinct from his ability to summon Luo Sanpao alone 6 85.

Soul Beast Knowledge

Yu Xiaogang possesses substantial factual knowledge derived from Spirit Hall’s collections. During Tang San’s first hunt, he teaches species identification, age estimation, and ways to counter encountered Soul Beasts. The narration distinguishes this genuine learning from the unreliable conclusions he draws when developing theories of his own 86.

Ten Core Competencies of Martial Soul

Yu Xiaogang presents the Ten Core Competencies of Martial Soul as research distilled from earlier texts and Soul Masters’ experiences. Lu Chen instead identifies much of it as copied, incomplete, or outdated material obtained through Bibi Dong 30 85.

Theory / Teaching Yu Xiaogang’s Position Documented Challenge
Innate Soul Power and Martial Soul quality Innate Soul Power is directly proportional to Martial Soul quality 31. Lu Chen cites Yu Xiaogang’s own latent dragon potential as a counterexample to an absolute rule 32.
Twin Martial Soul prerequisites The two Martial Souls must be close in quality 32. Lu Chen identifies Companion Martial Souls, in which one exists as a subordinate supplement to the other, as an exception 32.
Martial Soul Mimicry Theory Plant and beast Martial Souls can absorb each other’s Soul Rings under suitable conditions 85. Lu Yun challenges its application to Tang San’s Blue Silver Grass and Yu Xiaogang’s reliance on functional rather than evolutionary rings 100.
Blue Silver Grass development Treat it as a tool Martial Soul and emphasize toughness and poison; its weakness supposedly prevents attribute rejection 30 85. Ah Yin prioritizes vitality. Lu Yun demonstrates that plant-derived rings can provide toughness, poison, and regeneration together 30 100.
Martial Soul Evolution Includes material concerning the evolution of mutated Martial Souls 101. Ma Xiunuo identifies Lu Yun as the researcher whose evolution theory Yu Xiaogang plagiarized 101.

Equipment / Weapons / Items

  • Storage Soul Tool — Holds medical supplies used to treat Tang San after his assessment 107.
  • Bleeding-control and Wound-Healing Powders — Applied to Tang San’s injuries, though they fail to stop much of the bleeding after his fight with Xiao Chenyu 107.
  • Research collection — Books and papers on dragon bloodlines and the Blue Lightning Tyrant Dragon’s origins, purchased to investigate Luo Sanpao’s possible evolution 116.

Story Role / Major Arcs

Exposure Through the Notebook

Before Yu Xiaogang meets Lu Chen directly, the Notebook subjects his theories and romantic history to scrutiny. Liu Erlong initially defends him fiercely, while Bibi Dong considers whether Lu Yun’s breakthrough might offer a way to help him advance 16 29 30 32.

The subsequent revelations destroy that support. Bibi Dong shifts from love to hatred, and Liu Erlong vows to make him repay what he owes her 34 37 39.

Nuoding Academy Confrontation

Yu Xiaogang intervenes after Tang San is injured outside Nuoding Academy. Lu Chen publicly attacks his conduct, clan history, and scholarly reputation. Witnesses contradict his account of the dispute, and Wu Fang subsequently dismisses him, ending his free accommodation at the academy 77 78 80.

After arranging treatment for Tang San, he deduces the boy’s twin Martial Souls from his awakening certificate and accepts him as a disciple. He recognizes Tang Hao’s identity but withholds it from Tang San, unwilling to interfere with the Clear Sky Douluo’s arrangements 80 81.

First Soul Ring Hunt

Yu Xiaogang takes the still-recovering Tang San to the Soul Hunting Forest and directs him toward toughness and poison as Blue Silver Grass’s development path. Their encounter with a Mandala Snake exhausts Luo Sanpao’s attacks and forces them to flee 81 82 85 92.

Tang San kills the snake with his Sleeve Arrow, but Yu Xiaogang is poisoned and disfigured. Tang San performs only a brief detoxification before absorbing the ring. Yu Xiaogang later accepts the claim that he deliberately endangered himself to create an opening, recognizing its value in gaining gratitude from both Tang San and Tang Hao 94 96.

Public Defeat at Spirit Hall

Yu Xiaogang accompanies Tang San to Spirit Hall’s Nuoding branch, hoping the disciple’s successful advancement will restore his reputation. Instead, Lu Yun dismantles his reasoning behind the Mandala Snake ring 97 100.

The Teng brothers provide practical counterexamples: their younger Ghost Vine rings supply toughness, poison, and regeneration, alongside powerful first Soul Skills. Ma Xiunuo then identifies Lu Yun as the source of Yu Xiaogang’s copied evolution theory, leaving him publicly humiliated 100 101.

Debts and Renewed Evolution Research

At Tang San’s academy assessment, Director Su confronts Yu Xiaogang with 200 Gold Soul Coins in accumulated expenses. Unable to pay, he backs down over Tang San’s required apology; the academy assigns deductions from Tang San’s future work-study earnings toward the debt 105.

By Chapter 116, he has left his inn after spending his remaining money on research materials and overdue supplier bills. He still owes 30 Gold Soul Coins and is pursuing dragon-related Soul Bones as a possible route to Luo Sanpao’s evolution 116.

Relationships

  • Tang San — Disciple and hoped-for proof of his theories. Tang San increasingly distrusts his expertise but retains the relationship for its possible connection to the Blue Lightning Tyrant Dragon Clan 81 85 102 116.
  • Bibi Dong — Former lover and source of restricted Spirit Hall documents. Her longstanding protection turns to hatred after the Notebook revelations 30 34 37 39.
  • Liu Erlong — Cousin, former bride-to-be, and Golden Iron Triangle partner. Once his strongest defender, she later vows revenge 37 39.
  • Flender — Traveling companion and close supporter. In the original timeline described by Lu Chen, he finances improvements for Yu Xiaogang’s teaching and gives him control of Shrek Academy’s instruction 38 39.
  • Yu Yuanzhen — Father and current Blue Lightning Tyrant Dragon Clan leader 7.
  • Yu Luomian — Second uncle; exposes the blood relationship that ends Yu Xiaogang and Liu Erlong’s wedding 37.
  • Wu Fang — Former friend and host at Nuoding Academy; dismisses him after the confrontation outside its gates 78 80 81.
  • Lu Chen — Public antagonist whose revelations undermine his reputation and separate him from former benefactors 30 34 37 78.
  • Lu Yun — Researcher whose evolution theory he copied; publicly exposes weaknesses in his guidance of Tang San 100 101.
  • Tang Hao — Tang San’s father. Yu Xiaogang fears his response to the flawed Soul Ring guidance and hopes his apparent sacrifice will earn goodwill 96 102.

Notable Quotes

“I call it the ‘Ten Core Competencies of Martial Soul.’” 85

“San, you mustn't apologize! He's settling a personal grudge under the guise of official business and insulting our dignity. A person must have backbone!” 105

“San, your teacher was indeed negligent earlier. I forgot to teach you the basic rules of Soul Fighting. Since you were at fault first, apologize.” 105

Trivia

  • Lu Chen turns the saying “There are no useless Martial Souls, only useless Soul Masters” against Yu Xiaogang, arguing that his own failure to realize his Martial Soul’s potential exemplifies it 32.
  • In the later-era storyline, a theory attributed to a Grandmaster from ten thousand years earlier helps persuade Huo Yuhao that a Soul Beast’s quality can compensate for an attribute mismatch when choosing a Soul Ring 122.
