Idonis and Candiris had worked at the East Sanctum for years and were already well versed in the Mage Tower's work, so Patrick had little to worry about. He casually assigned them some tasks first to give them time to settle in.
"The old Sun Temple quartet is all here." Patrick could not help smiling.
The Ghostlands were nothing like Eversong Woods. Even with the constant-temperature barrier inside Sunfury Spire, Patrick could still feel the Ghostlands' chill. A light rain pattered outside the window, and the overlapping ridges of Sunscar Peak blocked the wind blowing from the north. But the sea breeze swept over the mountains east of the Ghostlands and across the skies above Zul'Aman, carrying the distinctive stench of hexes and voodoo to the Sun Temple, making the elves inside uncomfortable.
As usual, Patrick washed up and went straight to the Chief's Office, where he sat reading a book. Idonis and the others got up one after another, checked the Mage Tower, and began their own studies. Quelrintis and Yanida usually spent their mornings studying arcane magic in the library or making items in the Alchemy Workshop and Magic Workshop. In the afternoons, they organized gatherings with the rangers and residents outside the tower whom they had come to know well. Not long after arriving, Idonis and Candiris joined in as well.
The parties took place in the elven residences outside the tower. Quelrintis had invited Patrick too, but after seeing the Arcane Light in Patrick's hand and the thick stack of arcane books on his desk, he had only asked once, awkwardly. After receiving a refusal, Quelrintis never invited Patrick again.
Enjoyment was always the central theme of elven life. Ordinary elves knew how to enjoy themselves, and the privileged mage class knew even better. The elves lived in prosperity. Many met new friends at parties and gatherings, gained new knowledge or connections, or, at the very least, exchanged some bodily fluids. The elves were passionate about this way of life, so their birth rate was pitifully low and their society developed slowly. In the more than six thousand years since the founding of the high elves' Kingdom of Quel'Thalas, the kingdom had remained almost unchanged.
With a people who knew only pleasure and idleness and a decadent social climate, a kingdom would not develop much. The O Union of his previous life had already provided far too many lessons. An idle populace, a mindset that only blamed others, and a greedy, degenerate atmosphere had brought an end to their former legend. Thus, the social conflicts accumulated in the past began to intensify, and society grew turbulent and unsettled.
As a transmigrator with foreknowledge, Patrick knew this place's future and did not dare slack off. Surviving in this turbulent world in the future, while also sheltering a faction of his own, would be no easy matter without sufficient strength and resources.
Patrick opened his book. A few days earlier, he had only gotten halfway through preparing the spell ring for the fifth-ring spell Arcane Resonance. He had been busy with other matters and had yet to finish diligently studying the fifth-ring spells obtained from his father, old Phil. Among the arcane spells he currently had, there were still three:
General school: Permanency,
Transmutation school: Arcane Resonance,
Conjuration school: Teleportation.
He had not fully mastered them. The fifth ring marked the beginning of grasping the principles of teleportation, allowing the free use of teleportation magic circles and teleportation runes. The sixth ring was the starting point for an arcane master, as well as the foundation. Mages who reached the sixth ring could gain a basic understanding of space and use arcane magic to tear it open. Beyond the sixth ring, as their arcane attainment increased, they gradually began to understand space, master it, and finally know its laws inside out and manipulate it at will.
"Chief Patrick, the Elfgate defense officer and Ranger-General of the Ghostlands, Sylvanas, is outside requesting an audience." Quelrintis's voice came from beyond the door.
"All right, bring them over."
She was here. I was about to see Sylvanas while she was still a ranger.
"Good day, Chief Patrick Cabrolon." Sylvanas's gaze rested on Patrick, and as she spoke, Patrick saw her reveal her white teeth.
"Good day, General Sylvanas Windrunner. Please take a seat." Patrick gave a slight nod of respect, while his mental power instantly heated the teapot,
brewing Sylvanas a pot of peacebloom tea. Sylvanas was still a ranger-general now, without the gray-black skin of the Banshee Queen. Her eyes were bright and her teeth white, and her every glance was graceful. Her pale green Ranger's Battle Robe left her fair arms and midriff exposed. She was the perfect embodiment of hands as soft as tender shoots and skin like creamy jade. Beneath the areas covered by the Ranger's Battle Robe, her figure was full and firm, and her collarbones were clearly visible. She could rival Alleria.
"I'm Patrick, from Silvermoon City. Last week, I was appointed chief mage of the Sun Temple, responsible for its mage affairs." Patrick introduced himself.
"Yes, I'm Sylvanas Windrunner, commander of the Ghostlands' ranger forces. The council has already made your deeds public and given high praise to your achievements in the Life Forest. You successfully thwarted the trolls' surprise-attack plot and also helped Alleria advance into the Life Forest, wiping out the trolls' stronghold there, Zeb'Watha, in one stroke." Sylvanas expressed her approval of Patrick's battle. All elves were like this: any elf who could wipe out trolls would receive the respect of all elves.
"I hope we can work together in the future to combat the threat the trolls pose to us and protect our people's peaceful lives."
Sylvanas studied Patrick closely. This was the elf her elder sister Alleria had specifically asked her to keep an eye on. Wisps of arcane energy spilled from his eyes, and his pale blue eyes were lively. His hair was simply combed back, and he wore a white mage robe with gold trim and red patterns, looking like an ordinary Silvermoon City mage.
The scent of arcane energy fills the space around him. It would certainly make quite a few elves look twice, but it isn't enough to catch Alleria's eye, Sylvanas thought. Just what is so mysterious about you that you attracted Alleria? Let me wait and see.
Although doubts about Patrick had arisen in Sylvanas's mind, she did not voice them. Instead, she replied, "I will. Protecting our people from the threat of trolls is our shared responsibility."
Sylvanas left, and Quelrintis explained to Patrick that she had only come to rotate the ranger soldiers on the front lines. The Sun Temple was the logistics hub for all frontline forces in the Ghostlands, so Sylvanas stationed all the soldiers involved in the rotation here. Whenever she rotated troops or made routine inspections, she would visit the Sun Temple to inspect the troops and discuss battle plans with the mages stationed there.
However, the mages previously stationed at the Sun Temple had all left after only a short time, either leaving the Ghostlands or being transferred back to Silvermoon City. Quelrintis and Yanida could not make the decisions either, so the Sun Temple had become little more than a showpiece, reduced to a logistics hub for frontline troops.
