Personalized Water Breathing; above most Kinoe in combat ability 46 Completes half a month of intensive training. Original sword techniques 191 Her development of personal techniques is attributed to inspiration from sparring against Kumo’s Wind Breathing.

Background

Makomo lost her parents to demons at seven. Sakonji Urokodaki arrived in time to save her and placed her in an orphanage established by the Demon Slayer Corps leader’s family. A little past thirteen, she became his student and eventually adopted his surname 21 23 131.

Urokodaki raised her as his own daughter. Makomo later described him, Kumo, and the Butterfly Mansion household as the people who gave her a home and somewhere for her heart to rest 180 205.

Appearance

  • Eyes: Large, deep green, with a gentle, watery gleam 22.
  • Face: Delicate brows, a small nose, slightly upturned lips, and lingering baby fat at fifteen 22.
  • Build: Petite and lightly built; years of swordsmanship and breathing practice leave her lean and toned 52 131.
  • Mask: A smiling fox mask decorated with blue flowers, worn during Final Selection 19.
  • Later appearance: By eighteen, her face has gained a more mature grace, while her eyes retain their playful liveliness 131.

Personality

Makomo is kindhearted, strong-willed, and mischievous. Initially wary of strangers because of her childhood losses, she rejects Kumo’s offer to team up without hesitation. Once she trusts him, she becomes comfortable teasing him about his age, talent, and poor naming sense 20 22 23.

Her affection often takes a protective, elder-sister-like form. She looks after Sabito and Giyu, worries about Giyu’s withdrawal, and asks Kumo to help him reconnect with others. She is similarly attentive to Kumo’s emotional strain, noticing when his frustration with the Transparent World changes his behavior 25 180.

Her insecurity centers on losing people and being left behind. A teammate’s death, her own severe injuries, and Kumo’s rapid promotion to Hashira make her fear that he will become distant. In training, however, she is exceptionally persistent: Kumo worries more about her overworking than about her slacking off 40 45 46.

Makomo can be jealous and confrontational about Kumo’s romantic entanglements, but finds it difficult to remain stern with him. Her attempt to punish him over Nezuko’s affection ultimately becomes an opportunity to seek reassurance, much to Shinobu’s disappointment 139 273 274.

Abilities & Skills

Water Breathing

  • Specialty: Agility, flexible movement, and precise technique rather than raw strength 45 57.
  • Technical refinement: Initially imitates Urokodaki’s movements too closely. Kumo identifies unsuitable motions and openings, while Makomo works out adjustments for her own physique 45.
  • Hashira-level flexibility: Her movements initially leave Shinjuro scrambling during their sparring match 73.
  • Influence on others: Kumo learns two forms by observing her during Final Selection; Kanae later grasps the basics of Water Breathing by watching her rehabilitation training 24 48.
Documented Form Application
First Form: Water Surface Slash One of the two techniques she repeatedly uses during Final Selection; later learned observationally by both Kumo and Kanae 24 48.
Third Form: Flowing Dance Her strongest and most frequently used form. Combines nimble movement with attacks against multiple enemies 22 45 48 79.
Sixth Form: Whirlpool Turns to counter Gyokko’s attack from behind, severing his hand and creating space 79.
Ninth Form: Splashing Water Flow Used in training and to evade or block Gyokko’s barrage of bone needles 45 79.
Tenth Form: Constant Flux Uses Water Breathing’s most offensively powerful form during her assessment against Kumo 45.
Twelfth Form: Glimmering Shadow Her original agility-focused form. Avoids the strongest direction of Muzan’s whip strikes and redirects them through finesse 246.

Total Concentration Breathing

  • Maintains Total Concentration Breathing throughout her waking hours before Kumo’s special training 45.
  • Trains toward Total Concentration: Constant by having Kanae wake her whenever her breathing changes during sleep 45 46.
  • Can restrict blood flow around a wound to slow poison, but cannot halt Gyokko’s poison completely 79.
  • Cannot use her Breathing Style while deprived of air inside Gyokko’s water prison 79.

Reflexes and Physical Conditioning

  • Completes reaction drills requiring her to stop Kumo from lifting one of six cups; ten consecutive successes are required to pass 46.
  • Undergoes weighted running, frog jumps, push-ups, and other conditioning exercises, supported by medicinal meals 46.
  • Compensates for limited raw strength through speed and technique, retaining enough cutting power to decapitate demons 52 57.

Observation and Deduction

  • Quickly identifies Gyokko’s ability to move between pots after he appears behind her 79.
  • Recognizes inconsistencies in Kumo’s claim that he extracted extensive intelligence from Upper Rank demons during battle 127.
  • Questions Tamayo and Nezuko about their first encounters with Kumo, then confronts him about his unexplained familiarity with their histories, Sun Breathing, and Yoriichi Tsugikuni 127.

Combat Limitations

  • Prolonged attacks against durable opponents exhaust her more readily than they exhaust demons 45.
  • Gyokko’s poison progressively impairs her movement despite her breathing control; his water prison leaves her unable to escape unaided 79.
  • During the battle against Muzan, she struggles more than Sabito and Giyu because they possess Demon Slayer Marks while she does not 246.

Equipment

  • Nichirin Blade — Forged personally by the Swordsmith Village chief. Its blade turns aqua blue with a faint green tint 30.
  • Bright Red Nichirin Sword — Activated together with Giyu during the battle against Muzan 246.
  • Fox mask — A smiling mask with blue floral decoration, worn at Final Selection 19.
  • Wooden sword — Used for assessment and technical training with Kumo 45.
  • Custom leg weights — Sandbags strapped to her lower legs during conditioning 46.

Relationships

  • Sakonji Urokodaki — Rescuer, teacher, and father figure. She adopts his surname, and he fiercely defends her when Kumo’s romantic choices upset her 21 23 66 180.
  • Kanzaki Kumo — Fellow Final Selection survivor, lifesaver, trainer, and romantic partner. She falls in love after seeing his concern at her hospital bedside and later openly introduces herself as one of his sweethearts 21 22 50 73.
  • Kanae Kocho — Close friend and fellow Urokodaki student. Kanae nurses her, supervises her nighttime breathing practice, and becomes someone she can discuss anything with 41 46 49.
  • Shinobu Kocho — Close friend and frequent partner in teasing Kumo. Their shared frustration with his growing romantic circle leads to playful arguments and tussles 126 273 274.
  • Sabito — Junior fellow disciple whom she treats with affectionate authority. His interference after her reconciliation with Kumo prompts the pair to retaliate through sparring 25 67.
  • Giyu — Junior fellow disciple whose isolation concerns her. Later, they fight together against Muzan and jointly activate her bright red blade 25 246.
  • Kanao — Younger member of the Butterfly Mansion household whom she helps care for, including feeding her during meals 94.
  • Long Night — Her Kasugai Crow, whose arrival alerts Kumo to her encounter with Gyokko 78.

Story Role / Major Arcs

Final Selection

Makomo encounters Kumo at fifteen and initially refuses his offer to cooperate. During her fight with the Hand Demon, her agility allows her to press the attack before Kumo intervenes and saves her. Their subsequent conversation begins a friendship, and both survive Final Selection 20 21 22.

She brings Kumo to Mount Sagiri, tells Urokodaki about the Hand Demon, and explains Kumo’s wish to study Water Breathing. During his stay, she recruits his help in reaching the withdrawn Giyu 24 25.

Injury and Special Training

About six months after meeting Kumo, Makomo suffers severe injuries while creating an opening to kill a difficult demon. Her wounded teammate dies during transport to the Butterfly Mansion. Shaken by the loss and by the gap between herself and Kumo, she stages an alarming joke to test whether becoming a Hashira has changed him 40 41 45.

Once she recovers, Kumo oversees intensive rehabilitation and combat training. By its conclusion, her swordsmanship is distinctly her own, and he estimates her strength above that of most Kinoe swordsmen 45 46.

Water Hashira Promotion

Makomo reaches Kinoto and subsequently earns the Water Hashira position through her demon-slaying record. She chooses a patrol region between Kumo’s and Gyomei’s territories, conveniently including Mount Sagiri. Her promotion reduces the workload of the existing Hashira 57 73 74.

Encounter with Gyokko

Facing an Upper Rank, Makomo stalls through conversation and attempts a feigned attack followed by retreat. Gyokko intercepts her through his pots, overwhelms her with summoned fish monsters and poisoned needles, and traps her in a water prison 78 79.

Kumo shatters the prison with Thunderclap and Flash. Kanae carries the unconscious Makomo to the Butterfly Mansion, and she later awakens and begins recovering 79 80 83.

Supporting Kumo

Makomo confronts Kumo about his unexplained knowledge of people and demons after investigating his accounts herself. Later, when his pursuit of the Transparent World makes him increasingly impatient, she urges him to stop carrying everything alone and offers him emotional support 127 180.

Their established romance becomes physically intimate later in the story. Afterward, Makomo encourages him to spend time with Kanae and explicitly warns him not to hurt her 215 216.

Battle Against Muzan and Aftermath

Makomo fights alongside the other two Water Hashira during the battle against Muzan. Sabito bears the frontal pressure while she and Giyu intercept attacks that pass him, with Makomo relying on Glimmering Shadow and her bright red blade 246.

She survives the Corps’ disbandment and remains part of the Butterfly Mansion household. When Nezuko’s feelings for Kumo become clear, Makomo participates in the girls’ discussion and brings him to meet Kanao and Nezuko after failing to deliver the stern punishment she had promised 252 269 273 274.
