Background / History

As a human, Tsugikuni Michikatsu joined the Demon Slayer Corps alongside his younger twin brother, Yoriichi. He worried that their Breathing Styles would eventually disappear without suitable successors. Yoriichi answered that those who pursued their paths to the end would reach the same destination—an idea Michikatsu did not understand at the time 18 87 92.

Seeking greater strength and eternal victory, Michikatsu abandoned his family and became the demon Kokushibo. He killed Sun Breathing successors and the Corps’ Oyakata-sama. His betrayal contributed to Yoriichi’s departure from the Corps, although the murdered leader’s son was willing to forgive Yoriichi 84 92.

Nearly three hundred years before the main events, Kokushibo encountered the elderly Yoriichi beneath a red moon. Yoriichi gravely wounded his neck with one slash, but died standing before delivering another. Kokushibo admitted that a second strike would have killed him 18 22 87.

Kokushibo cut his brother’s corpse in half in anger, also severing the handmade flute Yoriichi had kept since childhood. Finding the flute brought him to tears. Unable to face the mutilated body again, he left with the broken instrument; Tamayo subsequently gathered Yoriichi’s remains and built his grave 5 18 21.

Appearance

  • Samurai clothing: Wears a purple haori patterned in black and carries a flesh-built sword at his waist 5.
  • Six eyes: Has six golden eyes, with “Upper Rank” and “One” inscribed in the middle pair before his promotion 5 21.
  • Demon Slayer Marks: Bears dark red marks on his face 5.
  • Persistent neck scar: Retains the wound left by the elderly Yoriichi centuries earlier 23.
  • Upper Rank Zero transformation: Develops curved demonic horns, while the rank numeral in his eye becomes “Zero.” His eyes turn red under Muzan’s control 83 84.
  • Post-decapitation changes: Grows six eyes in symmetrical fissures over his heart; his chest later bulges into a head-like shape 86 87.

Personality

Kokushibo’s ambition is inseparable from his jealousy of Yoriichi. Even after centuries as a demon, he resents his brother’s natural talent, long life, and apparent return from death. Lin Yoriichi’s impersonation makes him question why he abandoned humanity if his brother could supposedly overcome death without doing so 22 23.

His envy coexists with lasting affection. He keeps the broken childhood flute beneath his clothes, and its recovery briefly restores his human feelings. Encountering Lin at Yoriichi’s grave brings fear, longing, hatred, and jealousy to the surface at once 21 22.

Kokushibo respects strength and courage. He admires Akaza’s willingness to challenge him and praises the Hashira’s abilities, yet becomes ashamed of his own instinct to flee from Yoriichi. He fears dying without ever catching up to his brother more than death alone 24 75 82 83.

Despite his crimes, he retains a sense of martial honor. He regards attacks on wounded swordsmen and civilians as disgraceful, resists Muzan’s orders during the Butterfly Mansion assault, and feels grateful when the Hashira prevent his attacks from reaching the wounded. Their courage finally helps him understand that a legacy consists of spirit as well as technique 82 84 87.

Abilities & Skills

Moon Breathing

  • Combines sword strikes with crescent-shaped blades, bladed wind, and large-area shock waves 23 82 83.
  • Can attack multiple opponents or threaten a broad defensive position, as demonstrated against the Hashira protecting the Butterfly Mansion 83 84 85.
Form Demonstrated Effect Chapter
First Form: Dark Moon: Evening Palace An exceptionally fast quick-draw slash; produces crescent-shaped blades along its path. 23 82
Second Form: Pearl Flower Moongazing Releases two gusts of bladed wind. After his enhancement, their impact splits the webbing of Sanemi’s sword hand despite his active mark. 23 83
Fifth Form: Moon-Sickle Vortex Creates a surrounding vortex of bladed wind and crescent blades, forcing Mitsuri and Obanai away. 83
Seventh Form: Mirror of Misfortune, Moonlit Sends five enormous shock waves along the ground. 83
Eighth Form: Moon Dragon Ringtail Produces an enormous horizontal sweeping slash. 84
Ninth Form: Descending Moon, Continuous Facets Unleashes interweaving blade winds that restrict opponents’ movement. 85
Fourteenth Form: Fierce Transformation, Heaven-Filling Slender Moon Releases countless enormous crescent-shaped blade winds and gigantic crescent blades. 84
Sixteenth Form: Moonbow, Solitary Moon An aerial downward attack releasing several enormous blade winds filled with crescent blades. 85

Swordsmanship and Physical Ability

  • Centuries of practice allow him to knock aside Gyomei’s flail and axe with precise sword-tip strikes without using a Breathing Form 82.
  • Moves rapidly enough to become an afterimage while evading Muichiro and Gyomei’s combined attacks 81.
  • His Upper Rank One attacks are powerful enough to numb Lin Yoriichi’s sword hand even when blocked 23.
  • As Upper Rank Zero, gains substantially greater strength and an extraordinarily tough neck 83 85.

Transparent World and Vision

  • Uses the Transparent World to perceive bodily movement and identify openings in an opponent’s defenses 22 82.
  • His six eyes provide vision beyond ordinary human capabilities 82.
  • Recognizes the Transparent World and Demon Slayer Marks mastered by Muichiro and the other Hashira 81 82 83.

Regeneration and Decapitation Survival

  • Regenerates damaged flesh, but Lin’s sun-flaming blade chars new growth as it forms, preventing his nearly severed neck from immediately healing 24.
  • Survives complete decapitation through organs and tissues constructed inside his body by Muzan 86.
  • Can retrieve his severed head and continue running while replacement structures assume its functions 86.
  • These modifications do not prevent his eventual death at Lin Yoriichi’s hands 89.

Resistance to Muzan’s Control

  • Muzan can enter his mind, share his senses, and directly control his body. Sudden synchronization disrupts Kokushibo’s concentration during the graveyard duel 23 24.
  • Kokushibo retains enough will to condemn dishonorable orders and weaken an attack aimed at the Butterfly Mansion 84.
  • His resistance is limited: Muzan suppresses nearly all of his independent awareness, leaving him primarily capable of combat 82 84 85.

Equipment / Weapons / Items

  • Flesh-built sword — A living-looking katana with eyes along its blade. Kokushibo uses it for Moon Breathing and conventional swordsmanship. Its material does not reflect his appearance 5 21 75 82.
  • Broken handmade flute — Made for Yoriichi during their childhood and later cut in two with his corpse. Kokushibo carries both pieces beneath his clothes centuries afterward 5 21 22.

Relationships

  • Yoriichi Tsugikuni — Younger twin brother and lifelong rival. Kokushibo longs to surpass him but preserves their childhood flute; he ultimately comes to understand Yoriichi’s teaching about different paths reaching the same destination 18 22 87.
  • Lin Yoriichi — Enemy whom Kokushibo accepts as his resurrected brother. Lin exploits his emotions, nearly beheads him at Yoriichi’s grave, and later enters his memories before slaying him 22 23 24 87 89.
  • Muzan Kibutsuji — Master and source of his later enhancement. Muzan promotes him to Upper Rank Zero, modifies his body, and overrides his objections during the Butterfly Mansion assault 83 84 86.
  • Muichiro Tokito — Descendant of the child Michikatsu left behind. Kokushibo recognizes his lineage and praises his talent before fighting him 81.
  • Akaza / Hakuji — Fellow Upper Rank who once challenged him in a Rank Replacement Blood Battle. Kokushibo admired his courage, warned him to flee from Lin, and questioned his own resolve after learning of Akaza’s death 72 75.
  • Nakime — Provides transport through the Infinity Castle. Her attempted rescue passage closes when Muzan fears Lin will enter through it 5 86 87.

Story Role / Major Arcs

Investigation of Yoriichi’s Grave

Muzan summons Kokushibo after escaping Lin Yoriichi and shows him wounds identical to those inflicted by Yoriichi centuries earlier. He orders Kokushibo to locate the grave and check whether the remains are still inside 5.

After several unsuccessful days, Kokushibo hears local demons describe an ancient grave visited by a beautiful woman. He arrives to find Lin there and initially denounces him as an impostor. Lin’s resemblance, knowledge of private conversations, and request for the flute convince him that Yoriichi has returned 21 22.

Lin deliberately inflames Kokushibo’s emotions to attract Muzan’s attention. When Muzan synchronizes their senses, Lin strikes the old neck scar with a sun-flaming blade. Kokushibo escapes with his head attached by only a sliver of skin, while Muzan experiences the wound through their connection 23 24.

Blue Spider Lily Retrieval

When Akaza becomes distracted by returning human memories, Kokushibo takes over retrieving the Blue Spider Lily and directs him to draw the Corps’ attention. He warns Akaza not to fight Lin and later delivers the withered flower to Muzan 72 75.

After hearing of Akaza’s death, Kokushibo reflects on his own lost courage. While resting in a dilapidated house used for training, he overhears swordsmen mention Muichiro Tokito 75.

Butterfly Mansion Assault

Kokushibo confronts Muichiro, reveals their ancestry, and fights him alongside Gyomei. Muzan orders him to attack the Butterfly Mansion and kill the swordsmen inside, despite Kokushibo’s reluctance to target the wounded 81 82.

As more Hashira join the battle, Kokushibo assimilates Muzan’s stored blood and becomes Upper Rank Zero. The defenders’ refusal to abandon the mansion moves him to resist Muzan, weakening his attacks. All nine Hashira eventually assemble, poison and wound him, and hold him off until Lin arrives 83 84 85.

Final Pursuit and Reconciliation

Lin severs Kokushibo’s head, but his modified body continues fleeing with it in hand. Nakime opens an escape passage, only for Muzan to order it closed when Lin threatens to enter the Infinity Castle 86 87.

Lin then uses Tamayo’s dream-connecting drug to enter Kokushibo’s memories, learning details of the Infinity Castle and witnessing his history with Yoriichi. Facing Lin’s blade at his chest, Kokushibo finally understands his brother’s words and accepts that he has reached the same spiritual realm. His death is subsequently confirmed, and the encounter raises Lin’s restoration rate to 85% 87 89.
