Background / History

Wild Life and Capture

Nidoran♂ formerly lived in the wild with his family. At some point, a family of Ursaring drove them away, leaving him with a strong desire to become more powerful. After being captured, he particularly resented being treated as a tool and passed to another human 34 38.

During Team Rocket’s candidate selection, Miyamoto required the youths to tame a wild Pokémon within two days or face elimination. Giovanni randomly selected the Poké Ball containing Nidoran♂. On release, Nidoran♂ immediately prepared to attack him, only to retreat under Kakuna’s Bug King aura 34.

Forced Submission

Nidoran♂ tested Kakuna’s defenses with Poison Sting, then feigned submission while preparing Focus Energy. Recognizing Kakuna’s limited mobility, he attacked Giovanni directly. Giovanni fought back with kicks and a dagger, eventually pinning him despite being poisoned by his spines 35.

Giovanni repeatedly inflicted nonfatal stab wounds before stopping the dagger just short of Nidoran♂’s eye. Terrified, Nidoran♂ submitted, though he still expected his poison to kill Giovanni. An Antidote ruined that hope 35 36.

Giovanni then offered a bargain: Nidoran♂ could fight Kakuna after its evolution and earn his freedom by winning. Nidoran♂ accepted and demonstrated enough obedience to satisfy the supervising Team Rocket member. Doctor Liangmu subsequently treated his injuries 36.

Developing Cooperation

Their early partnership remained hostile. Giovanni locked Nidoran♂’s Poké Ball when recalling him, while Nidoran♂ continued attempting attacks and looking for opportunities to escape. Regular feeding nevertheless gave him a reason to cooperate 37.

After losing to Max’s Tyrogue partly because he ignored commands, Nidoran♂ became withdrawn. Giovanni used the defeat to offer him a path toward greater strength, then demonstrated his Viridian Force by restoring wasted potential. Nidoran♂ began trusting his capabilities, although he privately intended to benefit from Giovanni before escaping 38.

Selection Battle and Safari Zone Mission

When Miyamoto announced a battle in which only one youth could survive, Nidoran♂ became Giovanni’s active defender. He fought the combined forces of Lian Xiu and A Huo—Mankey, Meowth, Rattata, and Sandshrew—and badly poisoned Meowth. Their coordinated attacks eventually exhausted him 39.

Giovanni recalled Nidoran♂ just before Mankey’s Fury Swipes could hit him. Kakuna then evolved into Beedrill and took over the battle. Later, seeing Beedrill’s strength firsthand, Nidoran♂ refused Giovanni’s invitation to attempt their promised match 40 44.

Giovanni secured a Poison-type treasure for him as a selection reward. After benefiting from it, Nidoran♂ accompanied Giovanni and Johnny’s squad into the Safari Zone on a mission to capture one hundred Tauros. Giovanni warned him against fleeing and obtained his reluctant agreement to potentially use his treasure during the operation 43 45 46.

Appearance

  • Body: Purple, patched, and porcupine-like, with poisonous spines 34.
  • Head: Large ears, two small front teeth, a single horn, and bright red eyes 34.
  • Treasure-enhanced spines: Become blacker and shinier after he swallows the Gym-level venomous stinger 45.

Personality

Nidoran♂ is fiercely protective of his freedom, hostile toward captivity, and willing to deceive others to escape. His apparent submission initially conceals plans to kill Giovanni or abandon him. He is also observant enough to question why the intimidating Kakuna does not simply attack him 34 35 36.

Pride makes him sensitive to insults and defeat. He reacts murderously when Yalan mocks him, retreats into his Poké Ball after losing to Tyrogue, and resents Beedrill and Machop for outpacing his growth. Despite his bravado, overwhelming threats quickly produce frightened, exaggerated obedience 37 38 44.

Food, demonstrable growth, and Giovanni’s treatment gradually soften his hostility without erasing his independence. In the Safari Zone, he acknowledges that Giovanni has treated him well, while insisting to himself that concern—not fear of punishment—is why he stays 38 46.

Abilities & Skills

Poison Point

His poisonous spines make direct contact hazardous.

  • Has a 30% chance of poisoning an opponent when struck by a contact move 36.
  • Poisons Giovanni when his spines puncture Giovanni’s hand and scrape his body during their struggle 35.
  • Makes close-range exchanges dangerous for opposing Pokémon, though it does not prevent multiple attackers from wearing him down 39.

Poison Sting

Fires volleys of poisonous needles.

  • Initially has poor accuracy, prompting dedicated target practice 37.
  • Uses large volleys to force several attackers to dodge despite that weakness 39.
  • Can spray needles in multiple directions; this tactic badly poisons Meowth 39.
  • Cannot penetrate Kakuna’s Harden-enhanced shell 35.

Close-Range Combat

Combines direct charges with offensive moves.

  • Peck: Uses it against Giovanni and later against Rattata 35 39.
  • Ramming attacks: Can knock over a training target; later learns to avoid its return swing 37 44.
  • Fury Attack: Learns the move while absorbing the venomous stinger’s energy 45.

Supporting Moves

  • Focus Energy: Prepares it secretly before attacking Giovanni and uses it independently upon entering the selection battle 35 39.
  • Leer: Listed in his initial recorded moveset 36.

Equipment / Items

  • Gym-level venomous stinger — A Poison-type treasure requested by Giovanni and supplied through Giovanni Rika. Nidoran♂ swallows it and gradually absorbs its energy, gaining levels and improving his potential. Giovanni later warns that the Safari Zone operation may require using it, promising a better replacement if it is lost 43 45 46.

Relationships

  • Giovanni — Trainer and captor. Their relationship develops from violent coercion into conditional cooperation, supported by food, training, and Viridian Force treatment. Nidoran♂ remains reluctant to surrender his freedom 35 37 38 46.
  • Kakuna / Beedrill — Teammate and the opponent in his proposed freedom match. Nidoran♂ initially exploits Kakuna’s immobility but becomes openly afraid after its evolution 35 36 44.
  • Machop — Stronger teammate whose presence intimidates him. Machop’s rapid progress frustrates Nidoran♂’s hopes of catching up 44.
  • Max’s Tyrogue — Sparring opponent who defeats him when he fails to follow Giovanni’s commands 38.
  • Doctor Liangmu — Treats and examines him after Giovanni subdues him 36.
