Background / History
Orphanhood and Rescue
Giovanni transmigrated into an orphan’s body after its original owner tripped over a stone and died. He initially imagined becoming a Trainer and eventually Champion, but poverty left him without Pokémon, money, or reliable meals. Despite being expelled from the Viridian City Fourth Orphanage several years earlier, he remained grateful that it had kept him alive 1 10.
On his third food-gathering trip into Viridian Forest, he encountered a Rattata while taking a Red Apple. Its Tackle nearly killed him. After eating the apple to recover enough strength to fight, he killed the Pokémon with a branch but was left dying himself. His Viridian Force awakened before Miyamoto and Giovanni Rika found him; Rika claimed him as her son and brought him into Team Rocket’s successor program 1 2 3.
Successor Selection
Among a thousand adopted candidates competing to become Team Rocket’s next leader, Giovanni originally intended to choose a Ground-type Egg. A powerful premonition instead led him to a particular Bug-type Egg. When Nohara tried to seize it, Giovanni beat him to death with an incubator, both defending the Egg and frightening away other would-be attackers 4 5 6.
The Egg hatched into Weedle, whose potential had been damaged by its early hatching. Giovanni promised to repair that damage and make it the world’s strongest Beedrill. After capturing Weedle, he passed Team Rocket’s background check and began systematic training 8 10 13 14.
Mu Sen’s gang repeatedly targeted him. Giovanni first manipulated a training-ground confrontation so that the gang, rather than he, received punishment. He then offered hatching assistance to selected candidates in exchange for support, assembling enough allies to surround Mu Sen’s group. He ultimately killed Mu Sen without being punished by Team Rocket 16 17 19 21.
Building Strength and Support
Giovanni entered daily academic and battle lessons, trained alongside Max, and accepted Axin as his first subordinate. Axin’s information introduced him to Team Rocket’s leadership factions and the opposition surrounding the successor program 23 24.
Aidos summoned and threatened Giovanni, but Miyamoto intervened before the executive could give him a promised gift. Seeking resources elsewhere, Giovanni offered to cooperate with Doctor Liangmu’s research. Weedle subsequently survived a sealed-room battle among Bug-type Pokémon, nearly died against a Beedrill, and was revived by Giovanni’s Viridian Force. After consuming the defeated Pokémon’s nutrients, it evolved into Kakuna 28 31 32 33.
While Kakuna remained immobile, Giovanni acquired Nidoran♂ through another selection trial. Initial physical coercion secured its submission, but demonstrating that Viridian Force could restore its squandered potential began earning its trust 34 35 38.
Class Elimination and Fourth Stage
During the class elimination battle, Giovanni and Nidoran♂ faced multiple attackers while Kakuna was still unavailable. Kakuna’s evolution reversed the situation: Beedrill slaughtered the opposing candidates and Pokémon, leaving Max and Machop last. Max entrusted Machop to Giovanni and killed himself to secure its survival. Giovanni vowed to continue for Max and remain undefeated 39 40 41.
Giovanni Rika subsequently acknowledged his Viridian Force, approved his proposal to strengthen Team Rocket and infiltrate the Pokémon League, and identified Aidos as his principal threat. She assigned Miyamoto to restrain Aidos while the prolonged fourth selection stage gave Giovanni time to grow 43.
Tauros Mission and Johnny’s Pursuit
Giovanni’s first assigned squad mission was to capture a hundred Tauros under Little Pig Johnny. During the operation, he used Nidoran♂’s Gym-level Poison Point treasure to draw the herd into Johnny and escape. Johnny survived but lost four Pokémon, then pursued Giovanni while coveting Beedrill 45 48.
Axin openly sided with Giovanni. Giovanni ordered Sam’s death rather than leave an uncertain factor behind, and Beedrill killed him while Axin’s Pokémon killed his Pokémon. Their flight toward Fuchsia City brought them into the path of its Gym Leader, whose Crobat overwhelmed their defending Arbok and Golbat 48 49.
Appearance
- Initial build: Gaunt, sallow, and notably smaller than many fellow candidates because of prolonged deprivation 1 4 6.
- Hair: Shaved into a buzz cut during his treatment at Team Rocket’s infirmary; previously long because he could not afford a haircut 3.
- Clothing: Wears a black Team Rocket uniform, with a Poké Ball at his waist and a dagger carried at his thigh 3 8 34.
- Physical development: Recovers a normal build after ten days of regular food and training, then becomes sturdier and taller over the following weeks 15 26.
Personality
Giovanni is distrustful, ambitious, and intensely protective of what he considers his own. His experiences in the slums make him wary of researchers and benefactors alike. Although he dislikes gambling, he accepts dangerous risks when they offer his only chance of survival or advancement 3 5 6.
His ruthlessness is initially a deliberate survival strategy rather than an absence of feeling. Killing Nohara leaves him trembling and nauseated, and he later suffers nightmares. Nevertheless, he decides that refusing Team Rocket’s brutality would prevent him from rising within it; by the time he kills Mu Sen, observers are disturbed by his composure 6 12 13 21.
He treats loyalty as something worth rewarding. He rejects taming tools for Weedle, promises Axin opportunity and status, and accepts Max’s final wish for Machop. His treatment of the hostile Nidoran♂ is harsher, combining threats and force with food, healing, and demonstrable improvement 11 24 35 38 41 46.
His confidence does not replace effort. He repeatedly trains his body, studies battle methods, and develops his Pokémon through measured exercises. His stated ambitions extend beyond leading Team Rocket to conquering the world 13 14 26 27.
Abilities & Skills
Viridian Force
A green energy awakened through Giovanni’s connection to Viridian Forest 2 6.
- Self-healing and conditioning: Repairs injuries, strengthens his organs and body, and assists digestion and physical recovery 2 3 13.
- Pokémon recovery: Restores stamina and injuries, including reviving Weedle when it appeared dead after the Bug-type deathmatch 13 32.
- Potential improvement: Repairs damaged potential and improves Pokémon constitution; demonstrated with Weedle and Nidoran♂ 12 38 43.
- Nutrient absorption: Accelerates an Egg’s absorption of nutrient solution and helps Pokémon process accumulated energy or resources 6 33 45.
- Energy perception: Lets him estimate Pokémon levels and recognize harmful growth that overdraws potential 23 37.
- Enhanced senses: Allows him to detect an opponent’s breathing in darkness and sense powerful presences nearby 30 49.
- Limits: Extended use leaves him drained and groggy. By the time Beedrill reaches blue potential, his current Viridian Force is insufficient to keep improving that potential 12 45.
- Development: Giovanni Rika recommends studying a psychic’s training manual, but no resulting breakthrough is documented 43.
Pokémon Training and Battle Command
- Builds training routines around physical conditioning, recovery, move accuracy, and release speed 13 14.
- Uses progressively smaller targets to refine Poison Sting and recognizes that String Shot toughness depends on diet rather than exercise alone 14.
- Develops close coordination with Weedle, which can begin acting before he finishes an order 16.
- Exploits openings and injuries, notably directing Weedle to an existing wound on an opposing Beedrill’s abdomen 32.
- Adjusts his approach to individual Pokémon: Nidoran♂’s disobedience and weaker coordination prevent tactics that work with his first partner 38 39.
Personal Combat and Leadership
- Fights directly with improvised weapons, his dagger, kicks, and grappling; personally withstands Nidoran♂ long enough to subdue it 2 6 35.
- Receives martial-arts pointers from Max, progressing from clear inferiority to a narrow sparring defeat 24 38.
- Manipulates appearances and rules to punish stronger groups without suffering the same penalties 16 17.
- Trades useful assistance for alliances and recognizes the ambitions behind Axin’s pledge 17 19 24.
