Before entering, Xie Lin was blindfolded.
A staff member held his arm and led him down another long stretch before pressing him into a chair and slipping out without a sound.
The director's voice came through his earpiece.
"You can take off your blindfold now."
Removing the blindfold, Xie Lin found himself seated in front of a vanity mirror.
He first stood up and walked to the door, gripping the handle to test it-locked tight.

Xie Lin turned and surveyed his surroundings.
The furnishings were all from the Republican era, worn and dilapidated, and an air of decay hit him in the face.
Everything was coated in dust except that vanity mirror, which gleamed as though someone wiped it down every day.
"Hmm... is the mirror the key to clearing this?"
Xie Lin sat back down before the mirror, pulled open the vanity drawers, and began searching.
They were filled with old-fashioned makeup tools.
When he reached the last drawer, his movements paused.
There was only one card inside, lying faceup.
The card bore an intricate pattern, with a word written in the center-
Audience.
"Huh? My identity card?"
Xie Lin held the card and turned it over and over for a long while without figuring anything out.
He instinctively raised his head and looked into the mirror.
His reflection actually moved half a beat slower than he did.
"So it is the mirror."
He stared at it a little longer.
The person in the mirror abruptly stopped moving, slowly curled his lips into a smile, and opened and closed his mouth.
"It's my turn to take the stage."
