"Big brother!"
"Big brother, are you all right now?"
"Big brother, you were sick yesterday, and your face was so pale it was scary. Do you still feel bad?"
As soon as he stepped outside, several little tots pattered over and surrounded him. Wen Yanyu ruffled each little head. "I'm fine. I'm all better now."
Seeing that he was all right, the children started clamoring again.
"Big brother, are you telling stories today? Are you?"
Wen Yanyu glanced at the elderly man waiting there. "You'll have to wait a little longer for a story. I have something else to take care of first. Can you wait until I'm done?"
The children exchanged looks. Though a little reluctant, they still nodded obediently.
Wen Yanyu was attending to the children and was just about to ask Little Tiger's grandfather what he needed.
Wang Decai set down his things and dropped straight to his knees, making to kowtow to him.
Wen Yanyu froze, then hurried forward to try to help the elderly man up.
Duan Mufeng, who was watching from the side, abruptly stepped backward, slamming his back straight into Jiang Keyan, who had just come out of a side room after looking for candy.
"Ow! Duan Radish!!! My head!!!" Jiang Keyan clutched her head and cried out in pain, dropping the cup in her hand.
Duan Mufeng offered a wooden apology. "Sowwy~"
"Get lost!" Jiang Keyan shot him a glare.
[I'm dying, hahahaha.]
[I was concentrating on what was going on with that old man, but Ke Yan going, "Ow, my head!" made me laugh so hard I spat out my food, hahahaha.]
[Watching these two clash is so much fun, hahaha.]
[I was too worried yesterday to notice, but watching the replay, I realized these two were arguing over who got the spot closest to Bunny Baby. I laughed so hard.]
[Then Lu Mingxu just went around them. Lu Mingxu: go on, keep arguing.]
After getting a clear look at the scene before her, Jiang Keyan raised her eyebrows slightly.
"Oh? What's going on here?"
Duan Mufeng shook his head.
Wang Decai knelt firmly on the ground, clutching Wen Yanyu's arm, his voice thick with sobs. "You've done our family an enormous kindness. If it weren't for you, Little Tiger... he... he's the only child our family has left."
Jiang Wanrou came out of the inner room carrying a bowl of medicinal broth. Startled by the scene, she reached out to help the elderly man up.
"What are you doing?"
The children stood helplessly to one side.
"Uncle Decai, please don't do this." Wang Jianhua reached out to help him up.
Wen Yanyu tried to lift the elderly man, but after years of farmwork in the countryside, Wang Decai was so strong that he could not budge him.
Wen Yanyu was utterly flustered. "You don't have to do this. Everyone went up the mountain last night. I wasn't the only one who helped."
Tears streamed down Wang Decai's aged face as he thanked him and pointed at the two large baskets he had brought.
"Those are some fruits we grew on our land. We really don't have much at home. This is all we could bring. Please don't turn them down."
Wang Decai looked utterly sincere, as though he would keep kneeling if Wen Yanyu refused to accept them.
Wen Yanyu sighed helplessly and nodded at him.
Seeing him accept, Wang Decai added, "Our Little Tiger hasn't woken up yet. Once he does, I'll be sure to bring him here to thank you in person."
Wen Yanyu gave a quiet hum of assent.
Only after another lengthy round of reassurance and a promise to have a meal at his home was the matter more or less settled.
Wang Youdao ambled over from the other side and patted the young man's shoulder. "Sorry for all the trouble last night. We questioned him and found out that brat Yu Sheng was the one who took Little Tiger out and lost him. He was afraid of getting into trouble."
Wen Yanyu did not react much, but Duan Mufeng could not sit still. He swore and was about to charge out to beat him up.
Wen Yanyu grabbed him. "Bro, don't go making trouble yet."
Duan Mufeng had only just returned from abroad. Though they were in the right, most netizens were... If he did something impulsive and got tangled up with someone like that, it would be difficult to deal with.
Duan Mufeng glanced at him and quieted down.
Lu Mingxu frowned. "You owe us an explanation for this, don't you?"
"Of course." Wang Youdao nodded, his tone somewhat subtle. "It's just that some of the village boys have beaten him up, and he still can't get out of bed. Once he's better, I'll drag him over to apologize to you again."
With that, Wang Youdao turned to Jiang Keyan and bowed deeply. "I apologize to you on his behalf."
Seeing the elderly man do this, Jiang Keyan parted her lips, her gaze shifting briefly.
"It's all right." Jiang Keyan darted over to Wen Yanyu and wrapped her arms around his waist affectionately. "My Yanyu protected me."
"Right?"
Wen Yanyu nodded blankly.
Seeing where the girl had wrapped her arms, Jiang Wanrou's pupils trembled. "Xiaoyan! Let go!" she snapped.
Jiang Keyan instinctively let go, looking utterly bewildered.
Startled by her, the others all cast puzzled looks her way.
Jiang Wanrou strode forward, then forcibly pulled back the hand she had reached out. "Does it hurt?" she asked.
Meeting her eyes, which were practically overflowing with worry, Wen Yanyu paused in a daze. "Ordinary contact doesn't usually hurt."
She realized she had overreacted a little.
Jiang Wanrou rubbed her temples and said to Jiang Keyan, "I'm sorry. I got scared just now."
Jiang Keyan's heart lurched.
"It's okay... Yanyu's waist... is something wrong with it?" Jiang Keyan asked hesitantly.
Jiang Wanrou said nothing.
Looking around at their bewildered faces, Wen Yanyu averted his gaze and explained quietly, "My waist... I hurt it a little before. It's not serious. It's fine."
Seeing the young man being so evasive, they inexplicably thought of what had happened the previous night.
Another silence fell.
[So Aunt Jiang really did see an injury when she reacted like that last night.]
[Dammit, that camera was beside the bed. We couldn't see anything clearly.]
[I feel like... it must be pretty serious, or Aunt Jiang wouldn't have reacted so strongly.]
[Oh no, why does it get scarier the more I imagine it? I suddenly remembered someone in yesterday's thread saying Baby might have been abused. Sob, don't scare me.]
[Surely not. What day and age is this? If that were true, Wen Yanyu would've called the police ages ago.]
They cut up the fruit that had been brought over and gathered in the courtyard to bask in the sun.
Duan Mufeng lifted the gauze on the young man's hand. The wound beneath was already somewhat inflamed and festering.
Jiang Keyan glanced at Wen Yanyu, who showed little reaction and was concentrating on munching a strawberry, then lowered her head to tend to his wound.
The blue-purple veins at his wrist stood out sharply. Hydrogen peroxide gradually washed the blood and pus from his palm. Just looking at the wound was enough to cause phantom pain.
Wen Yanyu took the liquor-filled chocolate Jiang Wanrou held to his lips between his teeth, his cheeks moving as he chewed. He even watched the girl's painstaking care with some curiosity.
He said indistinctly, "If it's not infected, you don't have to be this careful. It doesn't hurt. Just clean it, put some medicine on, and bandage it up."
Jiang Keyan's hand shook, and half the small bottle of hydrogen peroxide poured straight onto it. Lu Mingxu swiftly caught the bottle before it could fall.
"Jiang Keyan! If you can't do it, get out of the way!" Duan Mufeng was so frightened that he swore and immediately pushed her aside.
Jiang Keyan: (っ╥╯﹏╰╥c)
"It's fine. It really doesn't hurt." Wen Yanyu raised his hand and patted the girl's head reassuringly.
Jiang Keyan: (*꒦ິ⌓꒦ີ)
Wen Yanyu: ૮₍ᵔ⤙ᵔ₎ა Munch!
Why were they so jumpy?
His immune system had already been a little weak, and with the high fever last night, the festering had spread around the wound. It was red and swollen, and the gauze was covered in pus and skin tissue that had stuck to it.
The three of them worked nervously together to treat the wound.
With Wen Yanyu popping one liquor-filled chocolate after another into his mouth.
They finally finished.
All of them let out a breath in unison.
[Aaah, watching them put medicine on hurts so much. How is Wen Yanyu completely expressionless?]
[Wen Yanyu is so good at enduring pain. Watching the disinfecting made my own palm hurt, and he was still over there nibbling strawberry leaves.]
[Maybe he naturally doesn't feel pain very strongly.]
[No, no, no. I remember during the talent show, Baby fell off the platform and twisted his ankle, and he cried from the pain. And when a rubber band accidentally snapped against him, he burst into tears from that too. He wasn't like this at all.]
[Sob, Baby is so good. He stays still and lets them change his dressing. If it were me, I'd have been thrashing around and bawling from the pain ages ago. Sob, Baby, you're the bravest little bunny!]
[Speaking of which, between the stuff on his arm, his behavior, and the chat casting him as a bunny, I suddenly thought of a really dark joke. Rabbits are the best at enduring pain.]
[Aaaaah, get out, get out, get out.]
