Background / History
A book appeared in Wen Yanyu’s mind when he was seven. It described a male-oriented wish-fulfillment novel starring Fu Hanchuan, with a minor character named Wen Yanyu who had no family. He initially dismissed the resemblance because he had loving parents and a younger sister 2.
In his final year of middle school, his family disappeared, and everyone else forgot that they had existed. Friends also began forgetting him. After seeing Fu Hanchuan on television and recognizing the book’s events, Wen Yanyu realized that he was its cannon-fodder supporting character: someone destined to pester the protagonist, die in a car crash, and have his death exploited against Fu Hanchuan 2.
He studied and worked part-time to enter Capital Medical University, hoping to become a doctor and resist his assigned fate. The plot nevertheless forced him to leave university after just over a year and enter the entertainment industry through a talent show. His control over his own body became intermittent 2 24 100.
During periods of freedom, he saved Fu Hanchuan from an injury that would have left him disabled. The two became friends, but the plot continued making Wen Yanyu behave in ways that damaged their relationship. His attempts to escape included suicide attempts intended to defy the story rather than punish Fu Hanchuan 2 5.
After dying by taking pills in the mountains, Wen Yanyu was bound to a system and sent through countless worlds as disposable supporting characters. His lives lasted anywhere from less than two hours to two years; he estimates that the cycles amounted to roughly a century. He returned carrying weakened abilities, accumulated trauma, and injuries that the system could stabilize but not fully heal 2 5 100.
Appearance
- Build: Not particularly short, but severely thin and frail for much of the story. His pallor sometimes makes the veins in his wrists and neck visible 4 147.
- Face: Striking, gentle features, peach-blossom eyes, long lashes, and a red mole beneath one eye 8 16.
- Hair: Long hair initially appears black, with white strands that he conceals using dye. During the mall rescue, his remaining black hair loses its color; after the medicine’s final effects, replacement hair grows down to his calves 1 4 25 99.
- Scarring: A large, irregular scar stretches across his waist and abdomen, brought back from his reincarnations 2 149.
Personality
Wen Yanyu is gentle and attentive, especially toward children and injured people. He notices Li Qianhua’s exclusion, patiently draws her into group activities, and lets her explore his face by touch. His concern for others repeatedly overrides concern for his own safety, including during the mall knife attack and Sang Huairen’s river accident 14 15 17 18 24 135.
His apparent softness often conceals exhaustion rather than ease. Repeated deaths leave him listless, prone to dissociation, and accustomed to treating serious pain as ordinary. He frequently apologizes for needing help and worries that his death—or continued presence—will hurt Fu Hanchuan 6 22 35 69 135.
He is slow to recognize romantic attention. Duan Mufeng’s flirting confuses him, while closeness with Fu Hanchuan feels instinctively different. Around trusted people, he becomes more talkative and visibly relaxed, although isolation has left him awkward at steering conversations 10 32 136.
His gentleness does not prevent ruthlessness when threatened. He subdues an armed attacker and responds to Lin Yu’s intimidation by warning that someone with nothing left to lose cannot easily be controlled through money or status 25 55.
Abilities & Skills
Inherited Otherworld Abilities
Wen Yanyu retains greatly weakened abilities from the cannon-fodder roles he inhabited during reincarnation. Their full range is not specified 2.
- Gray mist appears around his fingers during combat and can inflict pain when he restrains an opponent 25 47.
- Using his retained abilities during the mall incident causes severe pain, trembling, dizziness, and nausea afterward 27.
- His apparent combat prowess is not equivalent to extensive martial training: he considers his ordinary fighting skills amateur and relies on supernatural assistance against the armed assailant 27.
Life-Preserving Intervention
During the mall attack, Wen Yanyu touches the unconscious Jiang Wantang and takes Song Nianyao’s hand. Song Nianyao’s pain recedes and her awareness strengthens, while he tends to a soul on the verge of death 25.
- The intervention coincides with his remaining naturally black hair turning white 25.
- The injured survivors still require hospital treatment; the passage does not establish unrestricted healing or resurrection 26.
Medical Knowledge and First Aid
His university training supports practical emergency care, although he does not complete his medical degree 24.
- Treats earthquake victims while volunteering in a disaster zone 24.
- Provides airport first aid that a doctor later praises for its professional technique 24.
- Treats and bandages his own injured hand, though his habit of minimizing wounds alarms others 35 146.
Business Administration
The system coached him through roles involving corporate founders, executives, secretaries, technicians, and researchers. He initially struggled despite possessing his hosts’ memories, but gradually acquired usable business skills 71 75.
- Reviews marketing plans, operations, and human-resources materials alongside Fu Hanchuan 75.
- Copies and annotates documents while preserving the originals 71.
- Represents Fu Xin at a product launch and later takes charge of the corporation 158.
Cooking, Childcare, and Storytelling
- Cooking: Learned to feed himself as a child; efficiently cleans fish and prepares noodles, poached fish, and other meals for the cast 9.
- Personalized meals: Remembers individual preferences and adjusts dishes for different guests 146.
- Childcare: Organizes washing, encourages older children to help younger ones, and uses treats without excluding Li Qianhua 15.
- Storytelling: Holds children’s attention with fairy tales and later tells stories during livestreams 16 65.
Swimming and Wilderness Experience
- Retained abilities from multiple lives as a merman make him a strong swimmer, allowing him to reach Sang Huairen in a fast-moving river 135.
- Finds mushrooms and wild ingredients efficiently during survival filming 123.
- His otherworld experience is not infallible: he mistakenly assumes a fruit is safe because he previously ate it without apparent harm, then realizes a companion’s illness may have been poisoning 123 124.
Health and Trauma
| Condition or response | Details |
|---|---|
| Chronic reincarnation injuries | Returns with a severe waist-and-abdomen injury. Early attempts at healing only keep the damage from becoming immediately life-threatening 2 5. |
| Pain and physical weakness | Requires prescription pain medication and experiences bleeding, nausea, poor appetite, and episodes of collapse 5 6 7. |
| Medical trauma triggers | The smell of disinfectant provokes terrifying memories. Viewers later discuss his extreme panic during an attempted injection, though their psychiatric labels are speculation rather than a confirmed diagnosis 6 41 66. |
| Self-destructive behavior | Attempts to defy the plot through suicide and later injures his palm while dissociating over his erased family 2 35 100. |
| High pain tolerance | Repeated suffering distorts his sense of what counts as a serious injury; his claims that wounds do not hurt do not mean he is unable to feel pain 43 135 146. |
| Jun Changmo’s restraint | A brand prevents him from explaining parts of his experience. Its restraint is eventually burned away, enabling him to disclose the truth 99. |
| Recovery | Siye’s medicine causes prolonged agony before blue flames burn away the corruption clinging to his soul. His appetite, complexion, and weight subsequently improve, but later illness and wound-healing discomfort show that recovery is not immediate or complete 92 98 99 128 147 165. |
Equipment / Items
- Prescription medicine and painkillers — Necessary for managing his early symptoms; a forgotten supply at Fu Hanchuan’s home becomes a reason for renewed contact 7 21.
- Plush dogs and rabbits — Recurring comfort objects. Qin Chengzhi wins him a Meteorite Border Collie plush, and he holds a plush dog while ill during survival filming 79 113 128.
- Sapphire ring engraved “WYY” — Given to Fu Hanchuan as a birthday present beneath fireworks 105.
- Silver ring engraved with Fu Hanchuan’s initials — Held by Wen Yanyu while struggling with Fu Hanchuan’s disappearance 158.
Relationships
- Fu Hanchuan — His first friend after his family’s erasure and eventual romantic partner. Wen Yanyu insists that his affection would have developed even without the plot. Their relationship includes rejection, coercion, and harm before Fu Hanchuan acknowledges responsibility and promises lifelong care 49 67 101 136.
- Fu Zhiyan / the system — His companion throughout reincarnation, usually appearing as a Meteorite Border Collie. Their bond includes anger, dependence, affection, and the system’s patient instruction. Wen Yanyu later struggles to understand his feelings when the system appears as Fu Zhiyan; he does not initially know that Fu Zhiyan is approaching disappearance 2 71 141 142 143 165.
- Jiang Wanrou — His mother, initially encountered as an affectionate senior cast member who does not remember their family connection. Her protective attachment precedes the return of her memories 8 115 128 136.
- Qin Chengzhi — His father. Shares an amusement-park outing with Wen Yanyu before their family connection is restored and later promises to help find Fu Hanchuan 79 128 158.
- Younger sister — Central to his memories of home. Her disappearance remains an unresolved source of grief while he learns the truth about his parents 35 84 150.
- Ji Shenhuai — His parents’ adopted son and a doctor who treats him. Although Wen Yanyu praises him, hearing his parents’ easy familiarity with Shenhuai intensifies his feeling of exclusion 147 150.
- Li Lan — His manager and trusted support figure. He calls her “Sister Lan,” promises to attend her wedding as family, and has agreed to become her future child’s godfather 3.
- Duan Mufeng — A fellow guest attracted to him. Flirts openly, helps care for his injuries, and offers physical comfort, often without Wen Yanyu understanding his intentions 8 10 21 32 43.
- Lu Mingxu and Jiang Keyan — Fellow guests who become protective friends, helping treat his hand and reacting strongly to his disregard for his health 24 35 43.
- Li Qianhua — A blind child whom he befriends through patient attention, a stuffed puppy, and shared sensory experiences 15 17 18.
- Siye — A familiar figure from beyond his home world whom he greets with immediate affection. Brings the medicine intended to heal his old injuries and later asks for seats at his wedding 92 160.
- Jun Changmo — A source of intense terror whose involvement disrupts Wen Yanyu’s later reincarnations and whose brand restrains him 55 99 141.
- Lin Yu — Fu Hanchuan’s childhood friend, who tries unsuccessfully to intimidate Wen Yanyu into leaving him 54 55.
Story Role / Major Arcs
Return and Public Backlash
- After returning from reincarnation, Wen Yanyu awakens in the aftermath of a hospitalization publicly framed as a suicide attempt over Fu Hanchuan. He denies that Fu Hanchuan caused it and asks reporters to stop linking them 1 2.
- The system announces that his reincarnation cycle has ended, but Wen Yanyu remains skeptical of freedom and expects the novel’s scheduled death to arrive within a little over three years 2 7.
- He plans to finish the remaining term of his agency contract, save money, and leave entertainment. Previously, he donated almost everything he earned beyond basic living expenses 3.
Mountain-Village Variety Show
- Cooking, childcare, and storytelling reveal a side of Wen Yanyu at odds with his scandal-driven reputation. His account of the experience of dying also alarms the cast and viewers 9 15 16 22.
- His intervention in the Lixin Mall knife attack earns an official police commendation and widespread public praise 24 25 26.
- Remembering that his family was erased causes a dissociative episode and a hand injury. Subsequent rescues and medical crises expose how poor his physical and emotional condition has become 35 41 43.
Fu Hanchuan and Disclosure of the Novel
- Surveillance footage reveals that Fu Hanchuan hurt Wen Yanyu at the hotel. Fu Hanchuan accepts responsibility, reassures him that it was not his fault, and promises to protect him 67.
- Chen Wanqiu’s memories of his mother and sister provide external confirmation that his family truly existed 84.
- After the medicine removes Jun Changmo’s restraint, Wen Yanyu tells Fu Hanchuan that their world is a novel and recounts his erased childhood and reincarnations 99 100.
- He affirms that his love is not merely a product of the plot. They later exchange declarations of love during Fu Hanchuan’s birthday celebration 101 105.
Survival Filming and Family Recognition
- During a later wilderness program, Wen Yanyu conceals lingering injuries and remains on location despite fever and persistent coughing 118 128.
- He rescues Sang Huairen from the river, then collapses while coughing blood. Fu Zhiyan recognizes that years of extreme suffering have left him dangerously dismissive of illness 135.
- Jiang Wanrou begins investigating memories and feelings she cannot explain. Learning who his parents are does not immediately restore Wen Yanyu’s sense of belonging: their life with Ji Shenhuai makes him feel that he no longer fits into the family 136 147 150.
Disappearance and Reunion
- When Fu Hanchuan disappears amid nationwide blizzards, Wen Yanyu receives documents prepared for that possibility and assumes responsibility for Fu Xin 158.
- Jiang Wanrou and Qin Chengzhi support his search, although he remains hurt that they once forgot him 158.
- He eventually returns home holding the hand of a confused but instinctively dependent Fu Hanchuan. His public post celebrates dinner with his parents, older brother, and loved ones as the prolonged snowfall ends 159.
- In the Qixi extra, Wen Yanyu says Fu Hanchuan remembered him after forgetting everything; the couple describe their desired future as the present they already share 164.
