Silence hung between them.
Gu Fengyao spoke again. "Do you love him?"
"Fu Hanchuan, do you love him?"
Fu Hanchuan said nothing.
Gu Fengyao sighed silently, then pressed on. "If you don't love him, if you don't want him to love you, why do you keep him by your side?"
"If you can't love him, you could easily have someone protect him around the clock. You could easily pick a few reliable people for him. Why do you have to take him everywhere with you every day? He says he likes you, and you call him disgusting. You tell him to stay away, yet you won't let him leave, keeping him by your side without any standing or title."
"Fu Hanchuan." Gu Fengyao took a deep breath. "If you're going to say you can't find anyone to look after him because he's your most important friend, you could easily leave him with us."
"Our families may not measure up to yours, but the medical resources I have access to are certainly no worse than yours. I can take good care of him."
"Do you not want to let go, or are you unable to?"
Fu Hanchuan hung his head. Only after a long while did he answer, "I can't love him."
I have no right to love him.
Gu Fengyao frowned and was about to speak.
Fu Hanchuan kept his head lowered, his eyes utterly empty, with nothing in them. "He should be with someone better. He shouldn't be tangled up with me. He deserves someone better to love him."
"You're right. I can't take good care of the people around me. I couldn't even keep a little rabbit alive. How could I take proper care of a living, breathing person? Maybe I shouldn't have been greedy from the start.
