Background / History
Childhood and the Fu Family
Fu Hanchuan's father married his foreign-born mother while concealing his relationship with Fu Wenyuan, the Fu family's adopted son and Hanchuan's uncle. After discovering the deception, his mother was denied a divorce and prevented from returning home. Her parents died in a car crash after coming to retrieve her 47.
His mother eventually held down his younger brother as they burned to death in the family residence. Hanchuan escaped alone, leaving him with lasting guilt and recurring nightmares. Three families friendly with his parents helped send him abroad to escape Fu Wenyuan's attempts on his life 41 47 59.
Business Empire and Revenge
Taking ten million abroad, Hanchuan built an overseas business group in a little over ten years before returning to seize control of the Fu family. Those who had supported Fu Wenyuan went abroad or disappeared, while the families that had helped Hanchuan shared in his success 41.
Behind the family's public account of his revenge, Hanchuan manipulated Fu Wenyuan into killing his father. He later broke Fu Wenyuan's legs and confined him to a psychiatric hospital, where Fu Wenyuan died by suicide. After completing his revenge, Hanchuan knowingly accepted a car accident as his intended death; he had noticed that his vehicle had been tampered with and chose not to prevent it 47 48 59.
Wen Yanyu's Rescue and Their Friendship
Wen Yanyu pulled Hanchuan from the wreck and pleaded with him to stay alive. Hanchuan initially tested Yanyu's sincerity through money, career assistance, and affection, but gradually began wanting a permanent place in his life. Their companionship eased his nightmares, and the residence they furnished together became somewhere he could call home 4 48.
His support also became controlling. He bought Yanyu's agency, purchased apartments Yanyu considered renting, and directed him toward accommodation of his own choosing. His friends associated his expansion into entertainment with Yanyu as well 58.
Rejection and Continued Attachment
Hanchuan interpreted Yanyu's public declarations of love, followed by blocking him and avoiding him, as betrayal. Unaware that Yanyu's behavior was constrained by the plot, he threatened him and publicly denied any possibility of loving him. Even then, he prevented reporters from mobbing Yanyu outside the hospital 1 48 49.
His attempts to sever their relationship repeatedly failed. He mistook Yanyu's quiet visit to a riverbank for a suicide attempt, took him home, and later rushed him to the hospital when he collapsed while bleeding. Although he again declared that they should have nothing to do with each other, he continued contacting Yanyu about his medicine and treatment 4 6 21.
Recognition and Accountability
Hanchuan's fear of abandonment sometimes became violence. During one breakdown, he seized Yanyu by the throat. After another incident at a hotel, he initially had fragmented memories and did not realize that he had caused Yanyu's injuries 49 58.
Surveillance footage eventually showed him forcibly dragging Yanyu into the hotel room. He recognized himself as the person who had hurt him, ordered an investigation into the banquet, and promised to spend his life protecting Yanyu and making amends. His guilt also drove repeated self-injury 67.
He subsequently became more cautious in caring for Yanyu, accompanying him to medical examinations and bringing him to work. He publicly defended him against online harassment, released evidence of their closeness, and threatened legal action against those spreading abuse 69 73 78.
Accepting Their Relationship
Hanchuan's resistance to loving Yanyu was tied to his family history and his conviction that he would harm anyone close to him. Gu Fengyao challenged his insistence on keeping Yanyu nearby while denying him a relationship. Hanchuan eventually admitted that he had been too afraid to acknowledge his love and too selfish to let Yanyu go 93 94.
After Yanyu revealed the existence of the novel and his reincarnation experiences, Hanchuan offered to withdraw from his life if that was what he wanted. Yanyu instead affirmed that his affection had existed independently of the plot, and the two reconciled. On Hanchuan's birthday, Yanyu gave him a sapphire ring, and they openly exchanged declarations of love 99 100 101 102 105.
Fu Zhiyan and the Final Confrontation
Hanchuan initially regarded Fu Zhiyan as a romantic rival. Their confrontation changed when Zhiyan revealed that they were the same person and that Hanchuan had only three years left to live. Through their opened souls, Hanchuan received Zhiyan's memories and knowledge of the plans intended to protect Yanyu from Jun Changmo 138 139 142 143.
During the final confrontation, Hanchuan confirmed that the snake-shaped creature had been trapped, then carried the badly injured Yanyu through the snow as his fused body collapsed. He gave Yanyu a plush rabbit, placed a ring on his finger, and confessed his love as he faded. By their later wedding, Hanchuan had recovered all his memories; their vows, witnessed by the supreme law, bound their souls together permanently 157 160.
Appearance
- Build: Exceptionally tall, broad, and muscular, with a substantial size difference from Wen Yanyu 5 70 142.
- Hair: Black 58 105.
- Eyes: Usually gray-blue; his empowered soul-body's eyes lose much of their blue as it deteriorates 1 96.
- Voice: Naturally low and resonant 48.
- Scent: A distinctive bitter agarwood fragrance that Yanyu recognizes 4.
- Scars and injuries: Twenty-one scars on his arms from self-injury, along with old leg injuries that ache in damp weather 67 93 108.
- Soul-body deterioration: His separated soul's human body develops black cracks and has an uneven line of stitches securing its head to its body 96.
Personality
Hanchuan is cold, forceful, and deeply distrustful. His childhood taught him to associate safety with money and power, and he prefers to retain personal control over his business rather than rely on others' loyalty. He is exacting professionally and quickly dismisses an employee whose language exposes conflicting loyalties 48 70 80.
His attachment to Yanyu combines tenderness with possessiveness. He remembers casually mentioned preferences, responds quickly when Yanyu is ill, and takes pleasure in ordinary companionship. At his worst, however, he treats separation as betrayal, uses threats to prevent it, and allows jealousy to override Yanyu's comfort 48 49 101 142.
Guilt and fear underpin much of his behavior. He believes he should have died with his family and later fears that loving Yanyu will repeat the harm caused by his father and uncle. His development involves recognizing the injuries he has caused rather than merely presenting himself as Yanyu's protector 59 61 67 94.
After their reconciliation, he becomes more openly affectionate and willing to accommodate Yanyu. In the Qixi extra, Yanyu says that discussing a disagreement with him generally leads him to change his behavior promptly 164.

Soul Separation and Reunification
Fu Zhiyan is the soul entity that separated from Hanchuan after Yanyu's first death. The author explicitly distinguishes this from two separate people: both halves belong to Fu Hanchuan 165.
| State / Development | Chapter | Details |
|---|---|---|
| Soul separation | 165 | Following Yanyu's first death, part of Hanchuan's soul becomes Fu Zhiyan and accompanies Yanyu through reincarnation. |

| Shared consciousness | 143 165 | Zhiyan's disclosure connects their memories, experiences, consciousnesses, and perceptions. The author calls this combined identity “Complete Fu Hanchuan.” |
| Fused body | 157 | Their fused body is present during the final confrontation but deteriorates and collapses. |
| Recovered memories | 160 | Hanchuan has recovered all his memories by the wedding ceremony. |
“Favored One” Power
Hanchuan's separated soul gains the ability to turn his essence into a weapon capable of annihilating an existence. This makes him uniquely capable of inflicting real, indelible harm on Jun Changmo 97.
- Cost: Uses his life as fuel and his soul as the price, with the stated consequence of becoming nothingness after death rather than reincarnating 97.
- Combat application: Wields a longsword against Jun Changmo while the latter's shadows are prevented from escaping the world 96.
- Visible limit: Black cracks spread across his body after the power concealing him dissipates 96.
- Final application: Confirms that light has trapped the snake-shaped creature while his fused body breaks down 157.

- Uses this ability while dealing with what Jun Changmo has left behind 97.
Caregiving

- Remembers specific foods and small wishes mentioned in conversation 101.
- Helps with medication, washing, dressing, and physical comfort 78 137 144.
- Limits potential trauma triggers while Yanyu is beside him; this suppresses symptoms but does not mean Yanyu's psychological injuries are healed 120.
Equipment / Weapons / Items

- Longsword: Used by his separated soul in the confrontation with Jun Changmo 96.
