Appearance
- Puppy: A chubby, fluffy golden retriever small enough to fit within two palms, with large, dark, innocent eyes 19.
- Adult: Grows into a heavy, bear-like dog weighing over thirty-five kilograms. His long golden coat remains outwardly normal after drinking Compound V 23 99.
- Eyes and voice: Has brown eyes and, after revealing his speech, speaks in a deep, world-weary, middle-aged-man voice 122 235.
- Clothing: Wears a red plaid sweater knitted by Annie using yarn bought with her allowance 130.
Personality
Before his mutation, Buddy is affectionate, trusting, and delighted by ordinary attention. His lack of fear toward John is especially important: he settles comfortably in the boy’s arms when most people around John are terrified of him. He is similarly devoted to Lynn, greeting his return with enthusiastic nuzzling and tail-wagging 19 91.
After gaining intelligence, Buddy becomes outspoken, sarcastic, and shamelessly food-driven. He mocks the children, flatters Lynn for better meals, and treats dry kibble as an affront to his dignity. Lynn’s authority nevertheless brings his behavior under control almost immediately, particularly when his place at the dinner table is at stake 121 122 129.
Buddy is also calculating. He hides his magical talent because he expects Lynn to turn it into household chores, then uses staged injuries and deliberate displays of innocence to manipulate the Old Minister. Beneath his laziness and insults, he values the estate as his home and tells John to cherish the family they have been given 122 226 239 241.
History
Adoption and life with John
Lynn brings Buddy home after becoming concerned by John’s emotionless obedience during combat testing. Rather than giving John another opponent or weapon, he assigns him responsibility for a vulnerable life: feeding, bathing, and cleaning up after the puppy. John initially mistakes Buddy for emergency rations, but becomes moved by the animal’s trust and handles him with extreme care 19.
Buddy grows up alongside John in Vought’s underground apartment before moving with him and Lynn to the Long Island Estate. By the time John is eight, Buddy has become a large adult dog whose belly John comfortably uses as a pillow while reading 23 32.
The estate attack and mutation
Buddy is the first household member to visibly react to the danger outside during Charlie’s attack on the estate. He growls and barks at the grove beyond the windows before a mutated Doberman strikes the bulletproof glass, sending him flying. Lynn later finds no broken bones, explaining that Buddy has been frightened and had the wind knocked out of him 97 99.
While the family cleans up, Buddy drinks from a puddle containing residual Compound V. He initially shows no outward change. His transformation becomes unmistakable when he begins speaking English in front of the children, immediately using his new voice to insult them and demand better food 99 121.
Lynn permits Buddy to join the family at the dining table, seated on two stacked wooden crates. Later that evening, Buddy explains to John that he respects Lynn for giving him a home, helping John recognize the estate as a refuge shared by its unusual residents 122.
Secret magic and the Old Minister
After Joseph begins teaching the household magic, Buddy secretly proves far more capable than he lets on. At night, he casts a proper shield and uses Expelliarmus to knock an inaccessible bag of beef jerky from a cabinet. He conceals the evidence because he wants to remain a pampered pet rather than become another source of household labor 224 226.
Lynn exposes the deception through his awareness of energy flows within the estate and sends Buddy to follow Joseph. Buddy tracks the wizard into the Minister’s Office, demonstrates his nonverbal spellcasting, and obtains instruction in several common Auror combat spells. Joseph still refuses to teach him Dark Magic 235 237 238.
Determined to learn Avada Kedavra, Buddy infiltrates the Old Minister’s circle by disguising himself as an injured, filthy stray. After narrowly escaping the minister’s Killing Curse, he stages an apparently accidental spell with the minister’s wand. The minister decides that a magically gifted dog could become an assassin who would escape ordinary suspicion, while Buddy conceals his own intentions 239 240 241.
During the aftermath of the battle against Vought, the Old Minister abandons his plan to use Buddy against John after recognizing that the dog may be impossible to control. He personally attacks John with Avada Kedavra, and Lynn takes the curse instead. Buddy retaliates by biting through the minister’s wand wrist, catching the dropped wand, and retreating 258 259.
Later family life and preparations
Buddy remains close to the household through the following years. He accompanies Annie during her art career and rests his head on her lap during her global broadcast defending Lynn and John 273 348.
When Lynn warns of a possible invasion by alternate-universe Homelanders, Buddy is assigned to teach the family Avada Kedavra as a surprise attack. He enjoys making the others address him as their teacher before accepting the task 374.
During the later confrontation with Deadpool, Buddy produces his wand after being mocked. Once John exposes Deadpool’s attempt to cut off a finger for regeneration, Lynn orders Buddy to act, and Buddy casts Avada Kedavra 378 379.
Abilities & Skills
Magical Aptitude
Buddy is identified as the most magically talented member of Lynn’s household 368.
- Reproduces spells after observing Joseph’s demonstrations 226.
- Has a photographic memory and quickly retains new incantations and magical pathways 238.
- Casts with a wand held in his mouth, directing it through small movements of his head and muzzle 226 237.
- Initially conceals his ability so successfully that Benjamin mistakes his wand practice for chewing a stick; Lynn nevertheless detects it 225 235.
Protego and Expelliarmus
Buddy’s earliest demonstrated magic combines a full-sized shield with unusually fine control over directed force 226.
- Protego: Creates a translucent blue shield roughly the size of his body 226.
- Expelliarmus: Knocks a bag of jerky from a high cabinet without excessive force 226.
- Nonverbal casting: Demonstrates a shield and Expelliarmus to Joseph without spoken incantations, precisely targeting the wizard’s teacup 237.
Combat Spells and Dark Magic
Buddy pursues offensive magic even when Joseph refuses to teach spells intended for torture or killing 224 238.
- Learns Petrificus Totalus, Stupefy, Reducto, and Impedimenta from Joseph; immediate and nonverbal use of these newly learned spells is not yet within his demonstrated ability at that point 238.
- Gains proficiency with Avada Kedavra and is entrusted with teaching it to the household 374.
- Explicitly casts the Killing Curse at Deadpool; the supplied account does not establish a permanent kill 379.
Tracking and Danger Detection
- Warns the household of approaching threats through hostile growls and barking 97 110.
- Tracks Benjamin from the ruins of a previous encounter to a Queens sewer hideout using his enhanced sense of smell 193.
- Follows Joseph’s scent through the North American Ministry of Magic to the Minister’s Office 237.
Deception and Physical Defense
- Fabricates a convincing injured-stray disguise using mud, rubbish, and a deliberately scraped paw 239.
- Pretends his successful spellcasting is accidental to attract the Old Minister’s instruction 241.
- Bites through the Old Minister’s wrist during his retaliation for the attack on Lynn 259.
- Cannot injure John with an angry bite; his teeth leave no visible mark on John’s wrist 192.
Equipment / Items
- Wands — Uses a vine-wood wand during his secret practice and later carries a tooth-marked wand concealed in his fur 226 378.
- Red leather collar with a gold bell — Put on him by Black Noir despite his protests that it insults his dignity and ruins his image 123.
- Red plaid sweater — Knitted for him by Annie 130.
- Stacked wooden crates — Serve as his dining seat after Lynn allows him to eat at the family table 122.
Relationships
- Lynn — Adopts Buddy and remains the household authority he respects. Buddy credits him with providing a home, although he also fears being assigned magical chores 19 122 226.
- John — His original caretaker and longtime companion. Their affection coexists with teasing, stolen toys, and arguments; John is visibly worried when Buddy is injured 19 23 99 192.
- Annie — Draws him repeatedly, knits his sweater, and treats him affectionately. Buddy accompanies her during her later art career and televised testimony 46 130 195 348.
- Reggie — A frequent target of Buddy’s insults. Buddy mocks his training and reveals responsibility for the dog droppings Reggie stepped in, but later attempts to reassure him about his strength 121 124 374.
- Black Noir — Gives Buddy affectionate attention but also imposes the bell collar over his objections. Buddy’s admission that he leaves droppings outside Noir’s bedroom earns a dangerous look 106 122 123.
- Benjamin / Soldier Boy — A combative housemate and recurring rival. They exchange insults, threaten retaliation, and quarrel over Buddy’s place in the family 173 175 177 224.
- Joseph — His instructor in practical combat magic. Buddy impresses him with nonverbal casting but cannot persuade him to teach Dark Magic 237 238.
- Old Minister — A would-be mentor who intends to exploit Buddy as an assassin. Buddy seeks his Dark Magic knowledge, then attacks him after he fatally curses Lynn 241 258 259.
