Background / History

Tsunade grew up in Konoha and became a student of Hiruzen Sarutobi. As Hashirama Senju’s granddaughter and a princess of the Land of Fire, she held an unusually privileged position within the village. Her childhood memories of Hashirama included accompanying him to gambling establishments 11 15 44.

Despite her talent, medical training demanded sustained effort: she spent a year mastering foundational medical Yang Release transformations and mastered the Chakra Scalpel at twelve. She later became renowned as the Shinobi World’s foremost medical ninja 15 16 29.

Tsunade was a major battlefield figure during the Second Shinobi World War. Her medical reforms received Dan Katō’s support, and the medical corps she led proved essential to Konoha’s endurance in wartime 9 18 41.

The deaths of Dan and her younger brother Nawaki remained central to her disillusionment with Konoha. Before returning to the village, she wandered with Shizune, visiting gambling establishments while also hoping to find a disciple capable of inheriting all her knowledge 16 41.

Tsunade is blunt, proud, and impatient with attempts to control her. She knocks away an Anbu messenger sent to retrieve her and initially insists that Hiruzen’s recommendation cannot override her standards for accepting students. Nevertheless, his personal letter and visibly declining health reach her despite her resentment toward him 11 12 15.

Preserving her knowledge matters deeply to her. Finding a student who can inherit everything she knows restores her enthusiasm for teaching, and she repeatedly revises Yecheng’s training to accommodate his extraordinary progress. Her affection is demonstrative: she embraces him, tousles his hair, and celebrates his breakthroughs openly 16 29 30 32.

Her protectiveness extends beyond instruction. She brings Yecheng into her home after Root targets him and supports him publicly during sensitive negotiations. Gambling is her most persistent indulgence: she continues betting even when Shizune warns that their dinner money is at risk 12 18 19 36.

Tsunade returns with Shizune and tests Yecheng’s chakra control and shape transformation. His already-mastered Chakra Scalpel astonishes her, and she accepts him as her disciple. A shared lunch subsequently gives her and Hiruzen an opportunity to reconnect 15 16.

Protecting and Training Her Disciple

After a Root operative threatens Yecheng, Tsunade arranges for him to live with her. She also plans a response to the attack; later, his medicine includes costly ingredients attributed to a “kindhearted, one-eyed old man,” strongly implying that she obtained them from Danzo 18 19 21.

Her curriculum combines Academy theory, medical textbooks, medicinal treatment, physical conditioning, and practical ninjutsu. Yecheng’s rapid mastery repeatedly forces her to accelerate or rewrite that curriculum 19 21 29 30 32.

Kumogakure’s Explosive Insect Crisis

Tsunade supports Yecheng when he negotiates compensation for treating the Raikage’s party. She emphasizes the danger posed by Explosive Insects and publicly guarantees her students’ competence 35 36.

Because her hemophobia prevents her from operating, Shizune treats Karai while Yecheng assists. Yecheng then removes the Raikage’s larval insect himself, once again exceeding Tsunade’s expectations 36 37.

Disillusionment and the Hokage Question

Shisui Uchiha’s open battle with Root renews Tsunade’s disgust with Konoha’s leadership. Finding Hiruzen apparently informed about the conflict, she interprets his behavior as evidence of approval rather than ignorance. The confrontation revives her doubts about whether the village has fulfilled Hashirama’s promise to protect children and end internecine warfare 41.

Yecheng encourages her to follow Hashirama’s example by correcting injustice herself and becoming Hokage. His argument lifts her spirits, but she identifies her hemophobia as an obstacle 44.

Milk Tea Promotion and the Konoha Casino

Shikaku Nara interprets Yecheng’s milk tea recipe as a political overture from Tsunade to the Ino-Shika-Cho alliance. Tsunade’s uncertainty when approached shows that this interpretation does not reflect a clearly established plan of her own 46 48.
