Background / History

Childhood and Family Abuse

Shen Wangjing grew up in Shiban Village. His mother had been trafficked and sold to Shen Dayong, an abusive drunkard and gambler. Her throat had been poisoned, leaving her unable to speak; she communicated through gestures and writing. At four or five years old, Wangjing repeatedly stood between his parents with a broom, returning to protect his mother even after his father struck him aside 100 114.

At five, he went alone to the town police station to report the abuse. Villagers denied his account and described Shen Dayong as an honest man, preventing his mother from receiving help. She later died from postpartum hemorrhage shortly after giving birth to Shen Yuxing, reaching the County Hospital too late for treatment 100 114.

Shen Dayong’s Death

While Wangjing was supporting the household, Shen Dayong discovered his savings. Shen Yuxing tried to stop their father from taking the money and was beaten nearly to death. Returning from the fields, Wangjing encountered his father near the village entrance and noticed a banknote protruding from his pocket 147.

Their confrontation became a struggle beside the river. Shen Dayong attacked Wangjing with an axe, cutting him from shoulder to chest, then slipped on moss and fell into the water. Severely wounded and losing consciousness, Wangjing could not move to help. Before drowning, Shen Dayong seized his hand and tore a deep wound between his thumb and forefinger while attempting to drag him into the river 147.

Wangjing returned home to find Yuxing critically injured and arranged transport to the hospital that night. His brother survived, but misunderstood the stolen savings as proof that Wangjing had intended to abandon the family. Neither brother discussed the incident afterward. Wangjing endured the resulting murder rumors rather than force Yuxing to revisit the trauma 147 148.

Supporting the Household

Wangjing left school at fifteen and assumed responsibility for his paralyzed grandfather, his younger brother’s education, and the family’s impoverished household. He farmed, chopped firewood, carried water, repaired the house, cooked, and managed debts 11 18 46 145.

When armed men came demanding repayment of alleged debts without documentation, the fifteen-year-old Wangjing drove them away with a chipped woodcutting blade. His intimidating reputation discouraged those men from returning, although Li Guizhi continued harassing the family 21.

Meeting Jiang Xun on *Metamorphosis*

Jiang Xun came to Wangjing’s home through the life-swap program Metamorphosis. Their first meals exposed the household’s scarcity: after Jiang Xun ate, Wangjing was left with one bowl of thin porridge instead of his usual three. Wangjing initially regarded him as an inexperienced city boy unsuited to farmwork 7 8 10.

Despite his distant manner, Wangjing shielded Jiang Xun from hostile visitors and intervened when Li Guizhi’s associates attacked him. His attempt to discourage further confrontations led to an argument, but he subsequently brought Jiang Xun food, treated his bruises, escorted him to school, and stayed close enough to frustrate Zhao Pengfei’s attempts at revenge 14 15 21 22 23.

During severe weather, Wangjing crossed dangerous mountain terrain to obtain medicine for Jiang Xun. Footage of the journey softened public opinion and increased discussion of the pair. He also led a mountain search for Jiang Xun, following tracks and other small traces along hazardous paths 51 67 69.

When filming ended, Jiang Xun refused to leave unless Wangjing accompanied him. Wangjing declined, said Capital City was not his home, and told Jiang Xun not to seek him again. They nevertheless resumed contact by telephone 70 84.

Mine Injury and Hospital Reunion

After the show aired, the family’s debts were paid off, Grandpa Shen received a medication subsidy, and the Jiang family covered Yuxing’s education and living expenses. Wangjing nonetheless took dangerous mine work, accepting deep-tunnel assignments and additional shifts 93.

He was buried underground for six hours and survived with significant injuries. Jiang Xun reunited with him in hospital, where his left leg was in plaster and his forehead was bandaged. Doctors warned that prolonged oxygen deprivation could cause lasting or delayed brain damage, prompting Jiang Huaixiao to arrange a transfer to a better-equipped Capital City hospital 91 98 115.

Jiang Xun moved into his hospital room and handled his daily care. For Wangjing, who had spent years caring for others, being washed and fed so attentively was unfamiliar 92 98.

His Mother’s Case and the Trafficking Ring

The publicity surrounding Metamorphosis exposed Wangjing’s identity, address, and family history. Criminals connected to his mother’s trafficking learned that he possessed crucial evidence supplied by the director. Wangjing left without explaining the danger to Jiang Xun, believing that remaining nearby would put others at risk 114 125.

During a later attack, he defended Jiang Xun against several armed men, refusing to abandon the doorway of the phone booth sheltering him. He caught a knife barehanded and carried Jiang Xun to an ambulance despite his own wounds. His treatment included eleven stitches in his chest, eight in his left palm, and care for shoulder and knee injuries 122 123.

Captain Zhou Yanqing asked Wangjing to cooperate with the task force by exposing enough evidence to draw a key suspect back from overseas. Wangjing agreed because hiding would leave Jiang Xun, Grandpa Shen, and Yuxing vulnerable. Before leaving, he promised to return safely and accepted a handmade protective charm from Jiang Xun 129 130.

He later sheltered Jiang Xun from armed pursuers until Zhou Yanqing arrived with police. Officers then tracked the kidnappers toward the docks 139.

The Li Family and Return to Education

The investigation revealed Wangjing’s maternal connection to Li Zhaoheng. Li invited him to Hong Kong City and offered to bury his mother in the Li family cemetery. Wangjing repeatedly refused a formal return, declaring that he would earn the life Jiang Xun wanted with his own hands 142 145.

When asked about his future, Wangjing said he wanted to return to school. Li arranged his enrollment at Jinghua Middle School in Jiang Xun and Yuxing’s class, along with intensive tutoring. After hearing the full account of Shen Dayong’s death, Li also promised to prevent the incident from being used against him again 145 148.

Business and Shared Home

Under Wangjing’s leadership, a company that began with roughly a dozen employees moved into its own campus within three years. Its work expanded from enterprise data security to an artificial-intelligence algorithm platform, while investment grew from a few million to hundreds of millions. Li Zhaoheng openly praised his ability, and his standing within the Li Group came to exceed that of a maternal grandson alone 172.

Wangjing later purchased an estate halfway up a mountain in the northern suburbs. It included a rose-filled front garden and a glass greenhouse behind the house, becoming a home for him and Jiang Xun 173.

Appearance

  • Face: Deep-set eyes and brows, a straight nose, and thin lips; his sharply defined features are compared to careful blade-work 7.
  • Build: Broad shoulders, a wide back, long legs, and firm arm muscles developed through years of heavy labor 8 118.
  • Hands: Large knuckles, rough palms, and thick calluses. The old scar between his thumb and forefinger comes from Shen Dayong’s final attempt to drag him into the river 15 147.
  • Other scars: A long scar is visible on the back of his neck after he cuts his hair shorter 118.
  • Early clothing: Wears practical, heavily used clothing, including a black T-shirt washed almost white and an army coat 18 21.
  • Voice: Low and deep, often delivered in a flat, controlled tone 7 8.

Personality

Wangjing is taciturn, restrained, and accustomed to bearing responsibility without complaint. Years of poverty leave him with little energy for matters outside his household; he largely ignores the villagers’ avoidance and gossip. His apparent indifference conceals constant attention to his grandfather’s comfort, his brother’s future, and eventually Jiang Xun’s safety 15 44 46.

His protectiveness can become secrecy and self-neglect. He hides injuries, leaves without explaining himself, and accepts dangerous work or assignments rather than share the burden. Jiang Xun repeatedly challenges his willingness to treat his own survival as expendable 92 124 129.

He is also proud and independent. Neither the Li family’s wealth nor its succession prospects persuades him to surrender his plans; he chooses education and earning a future with Jiang Xun instead 142 145.

Around Jiang Xun, his reserve gives way to teasing, affection, and jealousy. He smiles privately after Jiang Xun tries to amuse him, deliberately provokes him with kisses, and objects when Li Zhaoheng promotes another grandson as a potential match. Duan Qizhao eventually recognizes that Wangjing’s attachment is far more intense than his calm manner suggests 58 149 159 171.
