Background / History

Childhood and return to the Jiang family

Jiang Xun was abducted from the hospital as a newborn and grew up in an orphanage until seventeen. Scarce food and repeated bullying taught him to defend himself violently. At six, he bit an older child who stole his steamed bun and refused to release him until three teachers intervened. In another attack, five or six older children broke five of his ribs; after recovering, he confronted each attacker individually 1 4.

A DNA test eventually identified him as the Jiang family’s missing youngest son. His return did not bring the acceptance he had hoped for: servants disparaged his upbringing, his stepmother Liu Wanying treated him contemptuously, and his brother Jiang Yanchu favored Jiang Yu, Liu Wanying’s son from a previous marriage 1 2.

When Jiang Yu blocked his doorway and called him a bastard, Jiang Xun kicked out two of his front teeth. He later put laxatives into liquor consumed by Jiang Yu’s threatening friends. Rather than accept his father’s demands for obedience and apologies, he confronted Jiang Changping over his affair with Liu Wanying and his absence during Song Minzhi’s childbirth 1 3 4 5.

*Metamorphosis* and Shiban Village

Liu Wanying drugged Jiang Xun’s milk and had him sent to the countryside for Metamorphosis. There, he stayed with Shen Wangjing and Grandpa Shen while Shen Yuxing went to the Jiang household. Jiang Xun refused the production team’s scripted “rebellious wealthy young master” persona, pointing out that he needed food rather than a staged tantrum 6 7 8 50 56.

Learning that his arrival had reduced Shen Wangjing’s breakfast to a single bowl of watery porridge, Jiang Xun took boxed meals from the production crew for Shen and his grandfather. He also helped sell the family’s corn, using energetic sales pitches and flattery to nearly empty two sacks in less than an hour 8 9 26.

His confrontations with local troublemakers brought genuine danger. Six thugs ambushed and beat him, leaving extensive bruising on his back. Shen Wangjing subsequently treated his injuries and stayed close enough that Zhao Pengfei could not catch him alone for revenge 20 21 23.

Meanwhile, online accounts accused Jiang Xun of abusing servants and bullying other children. The production team traced the likely paid accounts to three PR firms, including one with a history of working with the Jiang Group 29.

Forced departure and estrangement

Jiang Xun rejected Jiang Yanchu’s attempt to bring him home and disclosed that Liu Wanying had drugged him. Jiang Huaixiao later arrived to retrieve him, promising to investigate what had happened 50 59.

Near the end of the village stay, Jiang Xun climbed to an unstable cliffside overlook despite injuring his knee. Shen Wangjing dragged him away from the edge and angrily challenged his disregard for his own survival 68 69.

Jiang Xun agreed to return to Capital City only if Shen Wangjing accompanied him. When Shen refused and told him not to seek him again, Jiang Xun turned toward the mountain instead. Jiang Huaixiao forcibly carried him into the car, and he remained curled up silently during their departure 70.

Back at the Jiang villa, he rejected the idea that renovated rooms, expensive food, or belated kindness could erase seventeen years of absence. He began attending school but remained disengaged from lessons, placing third from the bottom in his class on a monthly examination 71 72 78 82.

Reconnection and another separation

With help from Duan Qizhao, Jiang Xun resumed telephone contact with Shen Wangjing. Shen’s reminder to eat properly prompted him to come downstairs for dinner after his withdrawn behavior at home 82 83 84.

During Shen Wangjing’s hospitalization, Jiang Xun tended to him and decorated his cast with twelve cats. When asked to visit his own hospitalized father, however, he refused to perform filial devotion for someone who had been absent throughout his childhood 95 97.

Jiang Xun celebrated his eighteenth birthday with Shen Wangjing and Duan Qizhao beneath the stars. Later, he returned to the Shen home and discovered that Shen Wangjing had disappeared without saying goodbye. He nearly smashed Shen’s telescope gift but stopped after Duan reminded him that his name had been carved into it 105 108.

Afterward, Jiang Xun went three days without food or water and required treatment for dehydration. Jiang Huaixiao admitted that he had mistaken his brother’s fierceness for an ability to manage without protection. He offered Jiang Xun a separate home, and Jiang Xun moved into East City Villa three days later 110 111 112.

Kidnappings and the criminal investigation

Kidnappers seized Jiang Xun to pressure Shen Wangjing into surrendering evidence. While captive, he learned that the mine collapse had been deliberate murder and understood that Shen’s disappearance had been intended to protect him. Despite being beaten, he fought back and escaped into the surrounding streets 120 121 122.

When Shen Wangjing later left to resolve the remaining danger and investigate his mother’s past, Jiang Xun gave him a handmade protective charm. He waited nightly for their promised calls, listening for reassurance that Shen was safe 130.

Unwilling to remain uninformed, Jiang Xun obtained Zhou Yanqing’s contact details from Jiang Huaixiao’s phone and visited the Municipal Bureau. He subsequently offered himself as bait in a police operation, carrying five trackers and scouting an escape route 135 141 149.

During that operation, he planted a tracker on a kidnapper, cut his restraints with broken glass, smashed a light, and escaped through a ventilation window. Shen Wangjing rescued him from a pursuing attacker and sheltered him in an alley until police arrived 138 139.

Family acceptance, studies, and career

Receiving a childhood lock bearing his name helped Jiang Xun confront his fear that he had been discarded. He later dreamed of Song Minzhi embracing him, affirming her love, and urging him to keep walking without looking back 157 158.

He also began taking his studies seriously. Shen Wangjing tutored him nightly, and the narration attributes his earlier poor grades to inattention rather than lack of intelligence. Their relationship became openly romantic, including Shen’s confession during riverside fireworks 160 161.

In London, Jiang Xun distinguished himself in debates and group case analyses. Jiang Huaixiao and Jiang Yanchu visited frequently and helped him build connections with leading law firms, while Shen Wangjing continued caring for him 171.

After returning to Capital City, Jiang Xun joined a firm specializing in criminal defense and public interest litigation. His choice reflected a conviction that the law could deliver justice where physical strength could not, particularly for trafficked children, domestic-violence survivors, and elderly victims of powerful people 172.

Appearance

  • Face: Exceptionally pretty from childhood, with two prominent dimples when he smiles 1 26.
  • Eyes: Slightly upturned at the outer corners; they curve into crescents when he smiles and closely resemble Song Minzhi’s 79 81.
  • Build and complexion: Slim, with thin forearms, pale skin, and long, slender fingers without farming calluses 10 21 70.
  • Periods of illness: Becomes noticeably thinner during emotional crises, with more pronounced cheekbones and a sharply defined chin 111 133.

Personality

Jiang Xun is confrontational, sharp-tongued, and unwilling to accept humiliation for the sake of family harmony. His aggression developed as a survival strategy in the orphanage: he believes that yielding to bullies only encourages further abuse. He answers insults directly and resists attempts to make him grateful for wealth or belated attention 1 2 18 71.

His apparent indifference conceals a strong desire for dependable affection. As a child, he envied marketgoers who had adults to buy them food or carry them when tired—not children with expensive possessions. Although he insists that he needs no one, separation from people he trusts can leave him profoundly withdrawn 26 108 109 111.

He reciprocates kindness readily. He brings food to Shen Wangjing and Grandpa Shen, protects Duan Qizhao on a dangerous climb, and includes Shen Yuxing in meals. Shen Yuxing eventually recognizes that Jiang Xun is softer-hearted than his abrasive manner suggests 9 68 144 152.

His greatest recurring weakness is treating his own safety as expendable. He fights while badly outnumbered and enters a dangerous police operation to help someone he loves. Learning to accept protection and ask for support becomes a central part of his relationships with Shen Wangjing and Jiang Huaixiao 21 139 140 141.
