"What's wrong, Hughie? What's all that noise out front?"
Solomon immediately put on a look of bewilderment and confusion, pretending he was about to rush into the front of the store.
"Don't go! Shen, get out! Get out of here, now!"
Hughie hurriedly grabbed him and held him fast, then turned and yanked open the storeroom's back door, his eyes filled with lingering panic.
He pushed open the back door, stopped, and glanced back at Solomon before shoving him outside:
"You go first!"
With that, Hughie hesitated no longer. He turned and resolutely charged back into the front of the store, where the fight was raging.
Solomon stood in the shadows by the back door, watching Hughie's retreating figure disappear. Instead of fleeing immediately, he paused briefly, then silently followed.
Hughie crept up behind Translucent, gripping a length of exposed wire, and gritted his teeth as he viciously thrust it toward him.
Butcher lay in a miserable heap on the floor nearby, a confident sneer on his lips, clearly having already anticipated Translucent's fate.
But in the next instant, something unexpected happened.
The wire was far too short. Most of the cable was buried deep inside the wall, and no matter how hard Hughie pulled, it refused to budge. He could not reach Translucent at all.
The oppressive tension in the air suddenly surged!
Translucent had already sensed something and was about to turn his head.
Now!
A sharp gleam flashed in Solomon's eyes. He stopped lying low.
He swiftly drew the high-voltage stun baton from his waist, rushed forward in two strides, positioned himself precisely behind Translucent, and slammed the electrified baton against him without hesitation.
His fingertip pressed the switch to its highest setting, and blue-violet arcs instantly crackled to life.
Bzzzz-!
Violent electric currents instantly swept through Translucent's entire body. Piercing, agonized screams suddenly filled the store, making their eardrums tremble.
Hughie cried out in fright at the sudden sight, instinctively retreating half a step, his face filled with horror.
Solomon's expression was cold and hard. His fingertip held the switch down without releasing it until Translucent's struggles grew weaker and weaker, his body lost all strength, and he collapsed heavily to the floor, unconscious.
Solomon still held down the stun baton's switch, electricity continually snapping through the air, as though he had yet to recover.
After a long while, Butcher slowly rose to his feet and glanced at Solomon, his earlier mockery gone from his voice:
"I take back what I said earlier. You're not a pussy!"
Hughie stood frozen, staring at Translucent's motionless outline on the floor, his face as white as paper and his voice trembling:
"Is... is he dead?"
Butcher stepped forward and kicked him twice. There was no response. He had stopped moving entirely.
"Not moving at all."
Then he turned toward Solomon, who appeared to still be shaken, his gaze sharp and intensely probing. "How did you know electricity could counter him?"
Solomon did not answer immediately. He lowered his eyes, looking as though the sudden turn of events had stunned him.
Only he knew that the moment Translucent fell, a notification from his cheat had popped up before him, along with a panel.
"Ding! Successfully defeated the superhuman, Translucent. Acquired the superpower Carbon-Fiber Super Skin. Superpower panel activated." Name: Solomon Strength: Level 1 Defense: Level 2 Hearing: Level 1 Vision: Level 0 Speed: Level 0 Ability: Carbon-Fiber Super Skin Carbon-Fiber Super Skin: The skin's exterior will turn into a carbon metamaterial, providing defense comparable to diamond. It can bend light to achieve optical invisibility and possesses extremely high electrical conductivity.
Looking at the panel, Solomon roughly understood how its various stats were categorized. Zero meant attributes equivalent to an ordinary person's. One marked the baseline attributes of a superhuman, while two and above represented a relatively formidable level even among superhumans. The higher the number, the more powerful the ability.
He had acquired Translucent's ability. Apart from his defense exceeding that of an average superhuman, only his strength and hearing had reached the basic superhuman level. His other attributes remained at an ordinary person's level.
Thinking it over carefully, aside from invisibility and defense, Translucent had never had any other tricks. He really could not be considered a powerful superhuman.
"Shen! Are you okay?"
Hughie reached out and gently shook his shoulder, pulling Solomon's thoughts back to reality.
Solomon looked up and shook his head slightly, his voice a little hoarse with lingering fear:
"I'm fine."
Butcher refused to let it go and pressed him again, his gaze locked firmly on him:
"Answer my question. How did you know electricity would work on him?"
Solomon put away the stun baton and looked up at Butcher as though he were looking at an idiot, his tone natural and flat:
"How would I know anything about the principles behind it? I saw Hughie trying to electrocute him with a wire, so I just used my stun baton to help."
Hughie hurried forward to smooth things over, explaining rapidly:
"I saw him explain it on Jimmy Kimmel Live before. His carbon skin is extremely conductive!"
Butcher raised an eyebrow and studied Translucent on the floor, his tone complicated:
"A lucky shot, but a good idea. I might never have thought of that in my whole life."
Then he changed tack, going straight to the point:
"But you carry a stun baton around?"
"For self-defense. I'm used to carrying one when I go out."
Solomon nodded calmly, his expression betraying nothing.
Butcher asked no further questions. He bent down toward Translucent's corpse and instructed in a low voice:
"Good work. Carry him to the trunk."
Hughie instantly lost it, grabbing at his hair in agitation, his face crumpling:
"What?! What are we going to do with him?"
Butcher easily lifted Translucent's upper body onto his shoulder, his tone casual.
"Hughie, you just killed one of The Seven. Along with your reliable little friend here, of course."
Hughie immediately grew anxious and hurried to deny it.
"Me? No! You fucking hit him with your car!"
Butcher dropped Translucent's body and straightened, his eyes fierce as he snapped:
"Listen, you fucking brain-dead moron, all three of us are in trouble!"
Hughie's mind was a mess, but he still argued, clinging to one last shred of hope.
"No! We aren't! He broke in here on his own and attacked us, okay? You're a federal agent. You should be calling the fucking Federal Bureau of Investigation!"
Butcher paused, the ferocity on his face abruptly fading, and said evenly:
"All right! All right! Technically, I'm not with the Federal Bureau of Investigation."
"What?!"
Hughie looked as though he had been struck by lightning. He froze completely, his pupils contracting sharply as he roared in disbelief:
"Then who the fuck are you?!"
Butcher looked utterly innocent, as though he had had no choice but to lie.
Hughie's mind went blank. What did that make everything he had done today? He had actually put his life in the hands of a liar.
"So you're not a federal agent?"
Just then, hurried police sirens sounded faintly in the distance, drawing closer and growing clearer.
Butcher pointed outside and spoke rapidly:
"Hear that? Police! So unless you want to explain why America's favorite invisible pervert is dead in your place, lying on the floor, give me a fucking hand, will you?"
