Background / History
Medical upbringing and life in the Northeast
Yan Lingyun comes from a large family of traditional physicians in Wuzhou. Her father taught her medicine, while she independently studied acupuncture and medical classics, including the Spiritual Pivot, Classic of Difficulties, Pulse Classic, Binhu Pulse Studies, and Essential Prescriptions Worth a Thousand Gold 17 105.
As an educated youth in the Northeast, she earns a reputation for treating illnesses beyond the local folk doctor’s ability. Wu Kui calls her the village’s “precious treasure,” particularly praising her acupuncture. During her first named meeting with Lian Youming, she recognizes his internal injuries and the lingering scent of Old Medicine without examining him directly 17.
Their early partnership combines her medical knowledge with his gathering and hunting. She identifies the Twelve-Gate Golden Bell Shield as an internal martial art, helps interpret its requirements, and prepares the dietary decoctions supporting his entry into martial training 21 23. She also exchanges bear gall and tiger bone for a copy of his recipe and asks him to protect her while retrieving rare ginseng 22.
Their mountain expedition brings them into contact with dangerous martial artists, including Third Brother Xie. Lian eventually carries her out of the mountains on his back 25 26. Before returning south, she confesses her feelings and asks him to come find her. Her later letters continue both their courtship and her guidance on his training 36 50.
Apprenticeship under Junk King
Yan reunites with Lian in Xijing, accompanied by her protective brothers Yan Guangming and Yan Zhaomei. On learning that an extraordinary physician has recognized her talent, she agrees to study on Zhongnan Mountain for six months to a year, postponing her other studies 104 105.
Junk King questions her medical knowledge, assigns her prescriptions to analyze, and designates Lian as her acupuncture practice subject. She and Lian later help clean and restore the ruined Taoist temple used as the mountain retreat 105 109.
She prepares Earth Spirit Heaven-Mending Powder with her brothers and brings it to Junk King. He teaches her the role of Old Medicine in sustaining martial artists and gives her a booklet of medicine and elixir formulas as betrothal gifts 132.
Courtship, marriage, and motherhood
Yan accepts Lian’s marriage proposal at the Taoist temple 111. Their relationship also draws him into her family’s troubles: the Earth Spirit Heaven-Mending Powder attracts martial-world interest, and she fears it is behind her father’s disappearance. Lian rescues Yan Beitong and returns him safely 74 136 138.
After moving to Guangzhou with Lian, she becomes pregnant. Rather than asking him to abandon his responsibilities in Hong Kong, she encourages him to act decisively and returns to Wuzhou to prepare their wedding 143 144 171.
They marry at Yan Medical Hall. The family simplifies the celebrations to avoid exhausting her during pregnancy, while retaining the principal wedding ceremony. She asks Lian to continue calling her “Classmate Yan” after marriage 204.
After more than ten hours of labor, she safely gives birth to a boy weighing seven jin and four liang. She leaves the hospital three days later 268 269. She later proposes having another child, and her second pregnancy is confirmed while Lian is preparing for battle 445 500.
Later research and family danger
Yan continues developing medical techniques while raising her family. She devises Golden Needle Point Stimulation, resumes studying Western medicine, and explains that her goal is research rather than qualifications: she wants to help Lian explore the connection between medicine and martial arts 273 445.
When Lian reveals his belief that he came from the future, she suggests an alternative: his memories may be foreknowledge arising from the Martial Way. Her reasoning leads him to reconsider his identity, though it does not establish the true origin of those memories 331.
The family moves into Du Xinwu’s fortified former mansion in Guangzhou as Lian prepares for an unseen threat 445. Yan later helps treat his injuries and assists his breakthrough through the Jade Pillow Gate with a golden needle 532.
As the danger escalates, she works with deadly substances to protect him, despite her distress at using medicine to kill 566. On her birthday, Yan Beitong insists that she and the children return to Wuzhou so Lian can concentrate on the approaching battle. She supports the decision without blaming her husband for their separation 583.
Appearance
- Tall, long-legged build: Among the educated youths, only five or six people stand noticeably taller than her. She is later described as slender, with exceptionally long legs 22 133.
- Face: Fair skin, rosy cheeks, large almond-shaped eyes, curved lashes, and small pointed canine teeth 21 25 105 133.
- Hair: Long, glossy black hair, often worn in a single braid; on reuniting with Lian in Xijing, her braid extends below the small of her back 25 104 108.
- Medicinal fragrance: Frequently carries a faint herbal scent, including in her freshly washed hair 108 139.
- Sensitivity to cold: Bundles herself in padded clothing, thick mittens, hats, and scarves during the northeastern winter 17 21.
Personality
Yan is initially quiet, timid, and easily embarrassed, particularly when Lian teases her. Her shyness does not prevent her from pursuing what she wants: she confesses first, chooses her own partner, and accepts his proposal directly 17 36 105 111 134.
Her fondness for food is a recurring part of their relationship. She especially values Lian’s cooking and remembers the rice mixed with lard he shared during her difficult days in the Northeast as better than any later delicacy 105 147. With him, she is affectionate and playful, answering his teasing with mock threats, pinches, or attempts to cover his mouth 105 111 445.
As a physician, she is meticulous and willing to question inherited explanations. She checks herb quality, studies the interaction of prescriptions, and uses Western methods to address the toxicity of traditional Old Medicines 17 23. Her interest in martial arts centers more on physiology, medicine, and health than on combat itself 310 445 467.
She supports Lian’s dangerous commitments while insisting that survival matters more than material gains. That loyalty does not erase her medical conscience: preparing lethal substances leaves her frightened and conflicted because she has studied medicine to heal and save lives 467 566.
Abilities & Skills
Diagnosis and Acupuncture
Yan is an accomplished acupuncturist whose diagnostic skill is established before she studies under Junk King 17 105.
- Identifies Lian’s heart and lung injuries from his breathing, complexion, and gait 17.
- Recognizes the scent of Old Medicine on his body 17.
- Treats patients at Yan Medical Hall 202.
- Notices Xie Ruomei’s damaged voice and offers to attempt treatment; the outcome is not documented in the supplied account 347.
- Treats Lian’s injuries with acupuncture and medicine, then uses a golden needle at the Jade Pillow Gate to assist his breakthrough 532.
Pharmacology and Old Medicine
Her pharmaceutical work combines family teachings, independent experimentation, and Junk King’s instruction 17 105 132.
- Toxicity reduction: Uses Western medical methods to remove the initial toxicity of certain Old Medicines, sacrificing a small amount of potency to avoid years of storage 17.
- Prescription preparation: Identifies improperly stored herbs, replaces weakened ingredients, and arranges five medicinal decoctions in the five elements’ generating order to prevent conflicting effects 23.
- Earth Spirit Heaven-Mending Powder: Prepares the Yan family’s coveted Old Medicine with her brothers 74 132.
- Modified supplementation: Reduces the potency of Golden Bell Cover’s dietary method to aid digestion and absorption without its original bodily burden; Junk King checks the modification 444.
- Travel medicines: Supplies Lian with pills and a bamboo canister of small celadon medicine bottles for his journeys 115 214.
Martial Theory
Yan understands martial physiology well enough to guide Lian despite not being a dedicated combat practitioner 21 24 467.
- Recognizes the Twelve-Gate Golden Bell Shield as an internal art involving the Twelve Principal Meridians 21.
- Warns that practicing its diagrams without the complementary breathing method could catastrophically drain essence and qi 21.
- Explains the relationship between intent, breath, muscles, and sinews 24.
- Distinguishes fixed training methods from adaptable fighting methods 28.
- Practices health-preserving exercises and knows a few fighting movements, but cannot touch Lian during their playful sparring 444 467.
Golden Needle Point Stimulation
Yan develops this technique from the martial method Lian showed her in the Northeast 273.
- Stimulates the body’s potential and its own blood and qi to increase strength temporarily 273.
- Requires a prior reserve of vital essence; otherwise, it damages the user’s foundation 273.
- Is explicitly not the lifespan-extending method she originally hoped to investigate 273.
Shared Perception
Through Lian’s visualization and the Dzi Bead, Yan briefly experiences his heightened senses and perceives the depth of his affection 467.
- Senses minute details in the surroundings and the presence of their son behind a closed door 467.
- The experience lasts only a dozen or so breaths and depends on Lian and the bead; it is not established as her independent ability 467.
Equipment / Items
- Medicine case: Holds preserved herbs and rare ingredients used in her pharmaceutical work 22 23.
- Hand-drawn map: Guides the expedition into the Greater Khingan Mountains 25.
- Medical and elixir formula booklet: Given by Junk King as betrothal gifts 132.
- Golden acupuncture needle: Used to assist Lian’s Jade Pillow Gate breakthrough 532.
