History

The Office and the Former Sect Master

During the Late Qing and Early Republican Era, the White Lotus Sect dominated northern martial society, exercising influence over lawful factions, criminal factions, and Greenwood. Other forces addressed its leader as Chief Steward 242.

Gu Xuantong disappeared while investigating a secret treasure linked to a map held by the sect. He was believed to have died beneath the Mountain Guardian’s fists. After his disappearance, the sect split: the White Lotus Saintess controlled the mainland branch, while another branch fled overseas from Shanghai and became the faction associated with Gu Feiyan. The sect’s accumulated resources were also divided among the Three Teachings 537.

The One-Eyed Elder is eventually revealed to be Gu Xuantong himself. Despite his former office, he had become a Mountain Guardian. He still demands recognition as Sect Master and plans to kill his grandson, Chen Baihu, before the latter can recover his peak strength 537.

The Current Holder’s Dual Identity

The current Sect Master and White Lotus Saintess occupy the same body but exhibit distinct voices and behavior. After the battle with Gan Xuantong, the Vice Sect Leader greets the same woman first as “Sect Master” and then as “Holy Maiden”; she answers both greetings separately 124.

Later revelations identify the Sect Master as an existence born from spiritual fantasy rather than an ordinary martial artist who developed through physical training. Her overwhelming spirit is supported by a comparatively frail body, explaining why the Saintess had usually remained in control 505 506. Changes in control remain visible afterward: during the mountain escape, Lian Youming recognizes the Saintess through her ordinary human emotions, followed later by the Sect Master’s return to godlike composure 512 514.

Early Battles and Cooperation

The current holder introduces herself during a gathering involving Gan Xuantong and Hongmen’s Zhao Yunzhong. She subsequently fights Gan Xuantong with Five Thunder Palm, but his Toad-Fishing Skill and Five Phoenixes Cry in Unison overwhelm her. Lian Youming intervenes, and Gan eventually retreats wounded 120 123 124.

She later offers to help Boss Chen against a shared enemy. Yang Shuang accepts despite their blood feud. In the resulting battle, the Sect Master fights alongside Boss Chen, Xue Hen, and Lian Youming, demonstrating projected force and helping break the old monster’s leg before Lian kills him with gunfire 184 197 198.

The Unfeeling Way and the Chief Seat Contest

On a train journey, the Sect Master reveals the purpose behind her attachment to Lian Youming: she intends to kill him to perfect her Way. He proposes setting a battle date after his return from overseas 374.

Her influence persists while he is away. After forcibly using White Bone Contemplation against Gu Feiyan, Lian suffers visions of rotting skeletons. Xu Tian and Xuanling Perfected Person identify this as a Heart-Refining Tribulation caused by a seed the Sect Master planted in him 439.

She attends the gathering of the Three Teachings as a contender for the Chief Seat. Gu Feiyan challenges her for her token, and the two later agree to face Lian together in a single life-and-death contest rather than separate matches 473 474 495.

Westward Battle and Mountain Escape

The three contestants leave Hong Kong and travel through Guangzhou toward the west, maintaining a continuous battle of wills. Lian and Gu Feiyan temporarily coordinate against the Sect Master, sealing their Six Senses to resist her spiritual attacks. After more than half a month, the confrontation develops into elaborate reincarnation illusions and direct combat 503 505.

The Sect Master eventually breaks their bones and lifts both opponents by their throats, but her body begins showing strain. Gu Feiyan embeds a Pulse Gate Nail in her back, and outside experts intervene in pursuit of the Three Teachings’ tokens and resources 507 508 512.

Lian carries her during their escape. On a snowy summit, she stays behind to confront nine pursuers, uses pills to increase her strength, and kills two attackers before suffering further severe wounds. Lian returns to catch her and threatens to discard the tokens unless the attackers stop 512 515 516.

The pair subsequently fight in coordination and exchange spirit and qi to regulate their injuries. Gu Yutong arrives with eighteen other Foresight martial artists and retrieves the Sect Master. Her apparent unconsciousness proves feigned: she had also been trying to lure a hidden Mystic Connection expert into revealing himself 519 520 521. Gu Xuantong later explains that the reincarnation experiences changed Lian’s and the Sect Master’s states of mind, weakening their desire to kill one another 530.

Northern Crisis and Renewed Alliance

Following a devastating battle in the north, the wounded Sect Master disappears. Reports describe heavy losses on both sides, including the death of one of three Mystic Connection combatants. Gu Yutong later asks whether Lian can locate her through their previous mental connection 580 586.

She reappears beside Lian at Qixian Temple, treats his scar, and offers information about his master in exchange for assistance obtaining the Sword Immortal Inheritance. She also acknowledges having entrusted him with the sect’s token and Gu Yutong’s group 606.

During the ensuing battles, she and Lian isolate the already-wounded Wei Changhui. Her sound attacks and close-range support help create openings, and Lian ultimately pierces Wei’s palm and throat with his sword 611 612.

Appearance

  • Build and features: A slender young woman with a willow-like waist, delicate neck, pale skin, and strikingly refined facial structure 120.
  • Distinctive hands: Her bare hands appear almost translucent in the light, with blood vessels and tendons faintly visible beneath jade-like skin 123.
  • Hair: Long and black; it rises or streams behind her during displays of internal breath and spiritual power 446 507.
  • Early clothing: A mask with a plain coarse-cloth shirt and trousers 120.
  • Casual clothing: Denim overalls, a white short-sleeved shirt, and sunglasses; she arrives at the Three Teachings gathering carrying a drink 474.
  • Later clothing: Flowing white robes during the westward contest, subsequently bloodstained during the mountain battles 503 518.

Personality

The Sect Master’s dominant manner is serene, detached, and seemingly divine. Her gentleness can sharply contrast with her reputation: at the clinic, she speaks pleasantly without any obvious murderous menace 184. Sangji describes her as having lived apart from ordinary society since childhood, leaving her worldly understanding simple despite her sinister and unusual methods 522.

Her attachment to Lian Youming begins as a deliberate cultivation technique. She treats him well precisely because stronger emotion should make its eventual severance more powerful. By the Chief Seat contest, that attachment includes conspicuous closeness, possessiveness, and love, which Lian finds more frightening than open hostility 374 495.

Her pursuit of strength is uncompromising. She accepts fighting many opponents as readily as fighting one and identifies obsessive dedication as a trait shared by those who reach martial supremacy 516 607. Nevertheless, she remains capable of cooperation and concern for the wider situation, including arranging protection for her followers and covering Lian’s retreat 515 606.

Abilities & Skills

White Bone Contemplation

A Buddhist visualization method intended to extinguish attachment to the physical body, used by the Sect Master as a path toward spiritual advancement 125 374.

  • Strips or distorts an opponent’s sensory experience 374.
  • Makes victims perceive themselves and others as rotting bodies or blood-covered skeletons, disrupting attacks even when they recognize the illusion 516.
  • Can leave a lasting mental influence: the seed planted in Lian triggers a Heart-Refining Tribulation when he forcibly uses the method 439.
  • Is resisted by Lian’s Fists Suppress the Mountains and Rivers and Seven-Step Heaven and Earth 374.

Divine Knowledge and Reincarnation Illusions

Her developing Divine Knowledge accompanies shifting qi dynamics and an attempt to transcend ordinary emotional and mortal limitations 458 459.

  • Detects a disguise that escapes the other experts present, including Gu Feiyan 483.
  • Creates extended illusions encompassing many imagined lifetimes and emotional experiences 503 505.
  • Uses familiar faces to exploit hesitation, including an elderly maternal figure during combat 507.
  • Remains incomplete when Situ Wudi assesses it; her attachment to Lian is a flaw in the Unfeeling Way 459.

Spiritual Empowerment

Her spirit directly reinforces her body, producing strength described as sufficient to seize dragons and throw elephants 505 506 515.

  • Hardens her neck until Lian cannot break the skin with his grip 505.
  • Enhances speed, reactions, grappling strength, and ordinary strikes without visible preparation 506 612.
  • Allows her to catch and crush Lian’s Geng Metal Sword Qi 506.
  • Enables her to catch a hurled boulder, swing it as a weapon, and shatter captured swords 516.
  • Does not eliminate bodily limits: inadequate essence and vitality leave her vulnerable during prolonged combat 506 507.

Martial Arts

Technique Demonstrated use
Five Thunder Palm Thunderous palm force that fragments a falling leaf and cuts Gan Xuantong’s clothing 123.
Chen-Style Taiji Cannon Punch Fierce hammering blows accompanied by internal thunder that resonates with thunder overhead 195 196.
Xinyi Fist Dragon, Eagle, and Snake methods, including a clawing attack against an opponent’s spine 196 197.
Force projected through the air Disrupts wind and rain before physical contact; identified by her opponent as Yang Luchan’s technique 197.
Sword Finger and swordsmanship Uses finger strikes against vital points; Lian recognizes “Bring in the Wine” in her movements 506 611.
One-Finger Zen Projects force from a finger during the three-way battle 508.
Heavenly Dipper Strength Releases force throughout her body to shed much of the pressure from multiple attackers and counterattack 516.
Monkey-Form Crouching Method Uses Lian’s method to disappear from the immediate perception of five attackers 519.

Six-Syllable Mantra

A sound-based attack that interferes with an opponent’s movement and breathing 507 612.

  • Briefly freezes Lian, allowing a Sword Finger strike to pierce his chest 507.
  • Disrupts Wei Changhui’s breathing and offensive rhythm through successive syllables 612.
  • Affects Gu Feiyan less severely than Lian, apparently because her cultivation differs from Neijiaquan 507.

Cooperative Spirit and Qi Regulation

  • Links palms with Lian to connect spirit and qi, regulate internal circulation, and preserve their remaining strength 520.
  • Functions reciprocally rather than as a one-sided transfer: their forces complement one another while sharing the burden of injuries 520.
  • Supports coordinated combat in which she moves around Lian’s body to strike exposed throats, wrists, and eyes 519.

Equipment & Items

  • Chief Seat ring/token — Carries a ring connected to the authority contested by the Three Teachings; Gu Feiyan demands that she surrender it 474.
  • Potential-stimulating pills — Carries two pills in a pouch behind her waist. They temporarily increase her fighting power at enormous personal risk 515 516.
  • Medicinal ointment — Applies ointment to Lian’s facial scar while negotiating cooperation at Qixian Temple 606.

Relationships

  • Lian Youming — Ally, cultivation attachment, intended victim, and eventual rescue partner. Their reincarnation experiences and exchange of spirit and qi soften their mutual killing intent 374 495 520 530.
  • White Lotus Saintess / Holy Maiden — The other identity sharing the current holder’s body; the two receive separate greetings and alternate control 124 512 514.
  • Gu Yutong — Vice Sect Leader and loyal subordinate. Leads nineteen Foresight martial artists to retrieve her and later seeks Lian’s help locating her 521 586.
  • Gu Xuantong — Former holder of the title and a dangerous independent actor. Chen Baihu suspects that he seeks the current Sect Master at Changbai Mountain 537 561.
  • Gu Feiyan — Rival from the overseas White Lotus branch. Contests her token, temporarily allies with Lian against her, and wounds her with a Pulse Gate Nail 474 495 508.
  • Situ Wudi — Fellow Chief Seat contender. Recognizes both her emerging Divine Knowledge and the flaw represented by her attachment to Lian 459.
  • Yang Shuang — Blood enemy who nevertheless accepts her help when Boss Chen’s survival is at stake 184.
  • Gan Xuantong — Opponent whose Toad-Fishing Skill and Five Phoenixes Cry in Unison overwhelm her during their early confrontation 123.
