Lu Shu, the Commandery Assistant of Kuaiji, only received the news after the commandery and county merit officers and Bandit-Catching Clerks had led the mounted troops and Foot Archers out through the West Gate. He was both shocked and furious. He had never expected Chen Caozhi to dare search the He Clan's manor, nor had he expected Dai Shu to lend such wholehearted support. The He Clan was the foremost clan in Shanyin. If Dai Shu offended them, he would not remain Kuaiji Neishi for long!
Lu Shu went to see Dai Shu in a domineering rage and demanded to know why he had acted unilaterally on so important a matter without consulting him. Dai Shu replied that Chen Caozhi had requested it; he was merely assisting with the Tuduan in accordance with the edict from the Chancellery of the Book of Documents.
Knowing there was no use arguing with Dai Shu about this now, Lu Shu said coldly, "If this provokes a popular uprising, Neishi Dai, do not try to shirk responsibility!" With that, he swept his sleeves and left, taking a carriage toward the He Clan's manor. Six or seven li outside the city, he encountered Chen Caozhi, Xie Daoyun, Ran Sheng, and the others returning in formation.
Lu Shu stopped his carriage to watch. Seeing the soldiers under Ran Sheng shoving several He Clan manor retainers along, he thought, Chen Caozhi went charging off to the He Clan's manor to search for hidden households. Why has he hurried back with only these few men under arrest? Is he trying to intimidate the He Clan? As if Chen Caozhi had the ability to search their entire manor!
Lu Shu lowered the carriage curtain and waited until Chen Caozhi's party had passed before continuing toward the He Clan's manor.
