Organization and Leadership
Ten Elders
- The Ten Elders are the Ink Pavilion’s ten strongest fighters. Nine remain hidden among the population, keeping the Demon Clan in check without public recognition 9.
- Only one elder’s identity is public. That elder reportedly began with a five-mark awakening egg, demonstrating that initial aptitude does not determine a cultivator’s eventual standing 8.
Branches and Personnel
| Person / Branch | Position or Function |
|---|---|
| Jiangbei Province branch | Located in Baichun City, the provincial capital. Its public lobby handles citizens’ business through staffed counters and a numbered queue system 16 31 33. |
| Lin Feng | Deputy pavilion master of the Jiangbei Province branch, commonly addressed as Pavilion Master Lin. Directs counter-cult operations, approves reward claims, and recruits for the Dark Pavilion 21 34 49. |
| Elder Sun | According to Zhao Zicheng’s inside information, proposed recruiting local talent to establish Ink Pavilion branches in underserved cities 10. |
| Clerical and support staff | Process applications, consult policy compendiums, monitor surveillance, and maintain operational records 19 31 50. |
Associated Departments
Lin Feng explicitly tells members of the following services that, strictly speaking, they all belong to the Ink Pavilion 48 49.
| Department | Documented Responsibilities |
|---|---|
| Demon-Slaughtering Pavilion | Hunts demon beasts around cities and conducts apprentice assessments. Its Third Squad also intercepts a human-trafficking shipment 8 27. |
| Dark Pavilion | Tracks hostile convoys and handles rescued trafficking victims with dedicated staff, clothing, and counseling support 21 30. |
| Guard Bureau | Participates in student assessments and supplies personnel for joint operations 8 48. |
| Reserve Corps | Trains prospective frontline personnel and participates in assessments and operational briefings 21 30 48. |
Resources vary sharply between departments. In Baichun City, the Dark Pavilion maintains an extensive, well-staffed facility, while the Demon-Slaughtering Pavilion operates from a shabby two-story building with one clerk and struggles to afford cultivation resources 30.
Principles
Protection of Humanity
- Its promoted civic values include prosperity, democracy, civility, harmony, justice, the rule of law, patriotism, dedication, integrity, and friendliness, as recited by Yu Sheng 1.
- Lin Feng states that the organization has never abandoned a human or sacrificed one for its own benefit during its 149-year history 49.
- Liu Qingfeng distinguishes institutional trust from individual virtue: not every member is good, but he assures Yu Sheng that the Ink Pavilion will uphold the truth rather than side with the larger faction 48.
“Teaching Without Discrimination”
Wang Wenxuan describes the Pavilion’s approach as guiding people toward useful action rather than demanding selflessness from everyone 21.
- Someone motivated by money can still serve humanity by accepting payment to rescue people or kill demons 21.
- In Wang’s explanation, selfishness does not disqualify a person from being a hero; turning against humanity is the decisive boundary 21.
- He argues that protected civilians have no right to demand that others risk their lives without compensation 21.
- He also claims that some competition for resources is tacitly tolerated when it produces stronger fighters. This explanation arises while he defends his own questionable reward-sharing arrangement with Yu Sheng 19.
Laws and Public Services
Legal Framework
The Ink Pavilion’s legal system includes criminal law, civil law, awakened-person regulations, and rights-protection provisions 4 18 33 40.
| Provision | Documented Effect |
|---|---|
| Unlawful detention | Carries three years’ imprisonment, or five to eight years in serious cases. Detaining a minor can incur harsher punishment 4. |
| Criminal Law, Article 75 | Cited by Yu Sheng for indirect killing or murder, with punishment of at least seven years’ imprisonment or potentially death 18. |
| Awakened-person section, Article 9 | Unjustified fighting within a city carries fifteen days’ detention and a 10,000-yuan fine. Serious public incidents can bring at least six months’ detention and a 100,000-yuan fine 33. |
| Rights Protection Law, Article 32 | Allows complaints against staff or the Pavilion itself when lawful service is refused or a review is deliberately delayed 33. |
| Civil law on public pornography sales | Cited by Yu Sheng as carrying fifteen days’ detention and a 2,000-yuan fine 40. |
Some regulations are disclosed only after a person becomes a true awakener. Liu Qingfeng explains that exposing ordinary people to certain incentives could encourage fatal acts of greed 24.
Rewards and Compensation
| Policy / Payment | Requirements and Benefits |
|---|---|
| Rescue rewards | Yu Sheng identifies overlapping rewards under Article 95 of the reward policy and Article 53 of the Awakened Regulations. With evidence, he calculates roughly 30,000 yuan per rescued person, claimable at any branch 18. |
| Injury relief | While planning his assessment claim, Yu Sheng calculates an additional 20,000 yuan if injured 19. |
| Apprentice death benefits | Article 162 of the latest Campus Policy provides 30,000–50,000 yuan for enrolled apprentices killed on missions away from campus. Witnesses who report the murderer and provide information also receive rewards 18. |
| Mobei operation compensation | An Xin announces 100,000 yuan per participant and a 500,000-yuan death benefit for the dangerous joint mission 46. |
| Reward processing | Yu Sheng’s approved application is promised within three business days; payment arrives in about two hours 34. |
Claims are reviewed rather than automatically paid. An Xin’s edited rescue footage prompts a clerk to seek supervisory guidance, while Yu Sheng secures approval after explaining why his intervention meets the rules 31 34.
Recruitment and Education
Local Recruitment
After the Xinhai City tragedy, the Pavilion increases attention to remote cities and arranges apprentice assessments with resources for outstanding candidates 8 10.
- Zhao Zicheng reports a plan to recruit talented locals, establish branches, and temporarily station experts to train the recruits 10.
- Once trained, those recruits would maintain local protection and cultivate the next generation of Guardians 10.
- Assessment discussions emphasize temperament, vigilance, resolve, and composure over aptitude alone 14.
- The Pavilion previously invested heavily in the only two documented multiple-awakening cases, but neither developed into an exceptional expert 4.
University Examinations
- The Pavilion sets a standardized examination used to select candidates for university assessments. High-scoring students submit preferences and then undergo their chosen schools’ actual assessments, limiting admission through personal connections 37.
- The Jiangbei Province branch publishes examination locations through its official account 50.
Ink Pavilion Academy
| Feature | Details |
|---|---|
| Admissions | Mysterious selection standards; admission letters are usually delivered directly to selected students 37. |
| Intake | Reportedly admitted only three students in its smallest intake 37. |
| Standing | Regarded as the top university because of its graduates’ battlefield achievements 37. |
| Completion and casualties | Low graduation rate, substantial withdrawals, and more deaths during study than graduations. Over 70% of graduates subsequently die in battle 37. |
Major Operations
Baichun Convoy Interception
A Myriad Gods Church caller demands safe passage through Baichun City in exchange for twelve students’ lives. Lin initially agrees and orders the northern gate opened, but the Dark Pavilion follows the convoy while he prepares an interception 16 21.
Zhao Qingyi kills the convoy guards, and concealed Ink Pavilion personnel recover the cargo and return it to Baichun City. When the caller protests, Lin rejects the premise that compliance would have secured the students’ release 22.
Trafficking Rescue
The Demon-Slaughtering Pavilion’s Third Squad intercepts a truck carrying bound and injured girls. An Xin reassures them that the Ink Pavilion has not forgotten them, and the squad takes them to Baichun City 27.
Dark Pavilion personnel then supply fresh clothing and counseling. A cult figure subsequently interprets the Pavilion’s decisive response as evidence that it is already targeting the Divine Cult 28 30.
Yu Sheng’s Reward Claim
Yu Sheng stages a conspicuously patriotic rescue performance during the apprentice assessment to support his bounty application. Wang Wenxuan cooperates and agrees to share the proceeds 19 20.
At the provincial branch, resistance to the claim escalates into a confrontation involving Chen Yimo. Yu Sheng stops the threatened fight by citing criminal penalties, then invokes his right to service. Lin approves the full bounty and offers him a place in the Dark Pavilion, which Yu Sheng declines for the time being 33 34.
Mobei City Joint Operation
- The Ink Pavilion leads an operation involving the Dark Pavilion, Demon-Slaughtering Pavilion, Guard Bureau, and Reserve Corps personnel 46 48.
- When An Xin asks whether they are expendable, Lin acknowledges additional arrangements but swears that those plans will not harm them 48 49.
- Participants surrender their phones and receive food and lodging for three days before deployment 49.
- Lin subsequently works from the surveillance room, investigating possible internal problems despite staff assurances that recruits have clean backgrounds. He cites past lessons paid for in blood as the reason for his caution 50.
